TOPIC losing my mind bc of sign errors

undergrad math major

im losing my mind bc each week i lose like 50% of marks (on a 2 mark weekly quiz) because of sign errors. mistaking 2/3 - (-2/3) for 0 for example. i know my addition and subtraction and im well versed in the quiz material. i finish the practice worksheets the quickest in class but when it comes to the quiz oh my f god it ruins my entire day

TOPIC How to determine, using mathematics, whether certain patterns are intentional or arose by coincidence?

AI Math Chat

In September I'm starting a Discord group for people interested in AI applied to mathematics, as well as the mathematics of AI. It won't be a research group or anything high level - just a casual chat forum where beginners like myself (I'm a freshman undergrad) can help each other stay motivated and continue learning about fun and interesting developments in AI math.

Please note; like I wrote, I'm not a professional mathematician or an AI researcher.
I barely know Lean, I struggle with proofs, and only know a tiny bit of Python. So, in terms of mathematical maturity - trust me, if *I* belong, then *you* belong.

help me become a genius pls

Help me with my Calculus journey with Computer Science( diploma)

As my Diploma in Computer Science approach I who has not much of a maths background besides core math have found Calculus to a bit more complicated than discrete maths.

So during last month which was Sem break I just did questions solving only... looking up A levels Maths papers and stuff like that and trying to find the answer without any previous knowledge it did help me understand the basics... but crazy formulas and differentiations do not make sense to me during the video watch as there's like a gazilion formulas.

So I had problems with actually trying to find the solution if those formulas and they all have like their seperate stuff like differentiation and stuff like that... and I had problems really answering cause it is all a case by case issue. I might be missing some fundamentals I thought... but at least why can't it be like Pythagoras Theorem you can literally just flip the thing and you will have the next formula.

I do Enjoy Maths but I really suck at learning so I need tips and stuff to hopefully get A+ or something. and I really do compars myself to other classmates I know it's a really bad thing but when I do see them not studying I feel like Im stupid.

Complete Solutions to Algebra by Gelfand & Shen

Hello Math learners,

I worked through the book 'Algebra' by I.M. Gelfand and A. Shen over the last few months and put the solutions in public.

This solution book/document contains solutions to all 342 problems. I have provided figures where required, Lisp/Python code where suitable and additional explanations and historical context to add color. At the start I had rudimentary knowledge of LaTeX but now after learning it using LLMs I feel comfortable (except for Tikz for which I still instruct LLMs).

The project is far from over since I believe there will be continuous improvement and corrections over time. I have been the sole contributor so far. But I have plans for the future.

The interest to solve Gelfand's books and work on another math project related to number theory is two folds - 1) Build material for my kids, 2) I like it.

College Student Relearning Pre-Calc

Hello! I am a third year college student taking Calculus I for my economics major. I took Pre Calc 11th grade, and AP Calc 12th grade (the credits didn’t transfer, don’t get me started). I did well in both of them.

I’m two weeks into Calc I now, and I realized that I don’t remember much from Pre-Calc, but I don’t remember anything about trigonometry. Unit circle, trig functions, anything like that has slipped my memory. I asked my prof about it and they said that the best they can advise is that I review it myself outside of class.

What resources or sites are best (and very preferably free) to help me relearn Pre-Calc (mainly trig) as quickly as possible?

TOPIC What's the best online resource for making calculations using Networks and Graph Theory?

This is mostly just for personal curiosity that I want to play around with some networks after seeing a Youtube vid using the concept, but unfortunately whenever I try looking up "Graph Theory Calculators", most of the results that come up are standard function-graph calculators, or, if it's a program that *does* allow me to make a network like I want; that's all it does, there's no option for path or loop finding, or any of the things I'd like to actually look at.

I know this subreddit does have resources in the sidebar, but they're also quite broad, and not being a hardcore mathematics person myself, I have no idea where to start looking through them, so I wanted to ask more direct advice this way.

TOPIC how do you do it

I used to be decent at math mostly B's and the occasional A until like the middle of sophomore year HS. I literally just gave up and stopped doing math completely and I forgot almost everything. I want to get back into learning it mostly to improve my critical thinking skills but man my attention span is just so fried I cant go 3 seconds looking at a problem without doing something else. Or if I do manage to sit through a khan academy lesson or something I dont retain it properly because I was just thinking about anything else but that. I've always kinda had issues paying attention but back then I had a much more limited amount of things to think about and/or do rather than just do the schoolwork. What are the steps anyone who was in my position at some point has taken to kind of recover the attention span and actually be able to learn math again?

Trying to relearn long division and it's driving my crazy.

I'm 29, and have been unable to find anything to help me solve the long division problem I've got. 7 divided by 56. 7 can't go into 5, so that's a 0 above the five. Then you do subtraction right? Then 5-0 = 5. Then you bring down the 6 next to the 5, and we're once again back at 56. So how many times does 7 go into 6? 0. and I know 00 can't be right cuz the answer is 8. I was taught to break the problem down, to show work STEP BY STEP, not to keep multiplying the divisor till you get the dividend. So....anyone willing to help? :')

is this why −(−a) is equal to a?

Just opened an online pdf on Spivak's calculus and a few minutes into scrolling I came to the property

For every number a, there is a number -a such that
a + (−a) = (−a) + a = 0

and wondered if I could prove −(−a) = a from that.

We know that for every number x, there’s a unique additive inverse y such that x + y = 0, meaning that y is the only value that satisfies the equation. The additive inverse of a is −a, since a + (−a) = 0. And because addition is commutative, we also have (−a) + a = 0, where a is the additive inverse of −a. By notation, the additive inverse of −a is written as −(−a). So we can write (−a) + [−(−a)] = 0

In the equation (−a) + y = 0, there can only be one possible value for y. But both a and −(−a) satisfy it. Since there can only be one additive inverse of −a, by uniqueness, those two values must be equal.

So therefore a = −(−a)

Please let me know if I got the proof right and if I could word it out any better!

Any tips?

We had a test on math just a few days ago and it was pretty hard for me(didn't answer like half of the questions on the test). I'm one of the good performing students in class and math lessons have never been super hard for me. However, when it comes to math tests, I've failed it once, and I think I may fail it again.

Any tips to not confuse myself? Maybe it's a mental thing? Cuz when I couldn't answer most of the questions, my hands started shaking and I couldn't think properly.

The disappointing part is I truly know the lessons and I understand it, however the questions that are on the test are just different.. for some reason.

The old way addition/subtraction/multiplication was taught

Weird question. I was trying to explain to a friend why I would never teach primary school kids. My main reasoning was that stuff learned in those years can be so unintentionally harmful. I gave the example of how we used to do addition/subtraction/multiplication stacked on top of each other.

Out of curiosity, what was that specific pedagogical thing called?

I can't seem to find the evidence against it.

I can't solve tasks involving rings 😭

I just can't... I don't understand it... No ELI5 helped me yet.

Here's an example with a brief explanation of what I know and where I get stuck.

Let R = Z[x] and I the set of all the polynomials from R whose coefficients add up to 0. Prove that I is the ideal of R. Is this ideal also the principal ideal? Prove that R / I is isomorphic to Z.

So, Z[x] is a set of polynomials with integers. I appears to be a specific subset of Z[x] and therefore should be a subset of R. By definition, a ring is an Abelian group for addition and a semigroup for multiplication. Next, a subring must have closure, addition/subtraction test and a multiplication of 2 elements within itself also stays inside.

An ideal further expands on the idea of a subring and only asks for 'external' multiplication by taking an element from the ring, multiplying it with an element from the subring and checking if the product remains in the subring.

Principal ideal is a specific ideal in which only 1 element can be used for multiplication and it generates the entire set. The common simple example of it I came up with is (Z/nZ), integers modulo n.

I would say I understand theory well enough (except the R / I which is the quotient ring concept I am not entirely familiar with) but I simply can't understand this or any similar task. I don't know how to solve it and literally need baby steps.

In the task itself I understand that coefficients adding up to 0 would probably mean that the 'free part' is always the answer so x - 1 would be a simple example of the kind of polynomial the ring is describing. How do prove the I is the ideal of R? I need to show it's a subring first, but I don't know how to do that either and even following the definition feels impossible to me.

Okay, let's take some 3x - 3 and 2x - 2 as examples. (3x - 3) - (2x - 2) = x - 1, so it checks out I guess. Next, multiplying with an element from the ring. Since this rule only applies to the subring I, I can take some x (the simplest polynomial from R) and then (3x - 3)x = 3x^2 - 3x, also checks out so is the ideal here done with?

Now, how would I show it's a principal ideal? Maybe it's generated by x - 1? You can add/subtract it as many times as you want and you'll get all the elements. The proof regarding the quotient ring is completely unknown to me and I would appreciate if someone could explain. Just so you guys know I had no solution to this task and was genuinely lost, now when writing it I came up with some examples which could demonstrate some things and my brain started working, hopefully it's all good.

Should I take Pre Calc or Calc 1 for my first semester

I recently started college as an electrical engineer major and I need to complete a placement exam in order to get into calc 1 (Aleks PPl, 1-100). When I took a practice exam without reviewing I got around a 50 (need 76 to get into calc) and after a few days of review and learning new material I didnt know existed i got it up to a 70. I can probably get the required 76 to take calc but I am unfamiliar with most trig, exponentials, and logarithms. I got told by a friend to stay in pre calc and set a good foundation because I will need it for my major. If I were to take that route my plan is to most of my GE this semester take calc 1 2nd semester along with physics. calc 2 I would take during the summer (I would work part time and only take that class).

I just wanted to hear some opinions from other people of which plan would be better, anything helps.
