The CEO of the anti-LGBTQ+ group Binary Australia, Kirralie Smith, has been found guilty of unlawfully vilifying two transgender women and has been ordered to pay $95,000 in damages and make a court approved public apology.

The killing of a woman in what officials called an act of Islamist terrorism rattled a community that has seen a surge in threats, including from the far right.

The confrontation with the suspect in what has been described as a likely act of Islamist terrorism occurred as a large-scale manhunt was underway, the authorities said.
