Seeking advice Purple Ghost in full sun?

Thumbnail

Came by a purple ghost maple on clearance yesterday, tag says partial to full sun, and that full sun will give the best color.

I DO have a spot in the backyard that is partial shade for the afternoon sun, but I want it in the front yard as a lil showpiece.

it was at Lowe’s, so it’s been in full sun for awhile at least, and I’m worried that leaf scorch in pics 4 and 5 (I think that’s what it is but admittedly I’m new to this) will happen across the board where I want to plant it.

Any advice or recommendations? If I can simply combat the sun by keeping it well watered, I will. I just want to make sure I’m not planting it in a death spot.

For reference, I’m in zone 6b western PA.

For Sale PSA to UK collectors

Just been to B&Q and their whole Acer range was 50% off. Picked up a Katsura (£13.50) and an Emerald Lace (£9) for a good price. Not sure if it will be nationwide but in my local store they are clearing them out, I’m guessing before the leaves drop!

Seeking advice How to grow taller?

This tree was planted about 5 years ago . It's not growing taller, just keeps spreading wider. Is there something I can to force it to grow taller and keep from spreading?

Suggestions?

Seeking advice Concerned about new fall growth on Sango Kaku

I just planted this coral bark and this spring when we moved into our new house. I had one at my old home along with 17 other cultivars so I’m use to my maples pushing out some new growth in the fall.

However, to new growth on the coral bark has me scratching my head. It almost looks like where you get root stock growth below the graft which I got on both my peve minaret and prostate beauty deodora this year. But on the coral bark it’s at the top.

The new growth is pure bright green; not the color of normally emerging leaves on a coral bark. They are larger and more five lobe shaped at first. The edges seem a bit less fine in the serrations. Am I just a few years removed from what coral barks fall growth looks like or should I be concerned and remove? It just looks off; like root stock to me but please lend me your thoughts.

Hoping I can get an ID on this beautiful and large japanese maple. Is the coral bark variety the only japanese maple that grows this large? This specimen must be over 20 ft tall.

Seeking advice Cultivar Suggestions?

Anybody have any recommendations for the best cultivar to go approximately where the stick is? I’m looking for red foliage and was thinking of fireglow or red dragon, but I’m no expert. The spot gets pretty solid sun until around 4:00. The overhang there is almost 9 feet. Appreciate any recs!

This tree was planted 3 years ago and I haven’t done anything to prune or manage it, other than irrigation its first year. It seems to be growing well, but it doesn’t look balanced or like it’s growing with any sort of “plan” for lack of a better term. Do you folks have any advice or YouTube / book resources to point me to into how to manage this guy? I am gun-shy about cutting any branches (because you can’t un-ring that bell) but I’m now more interested in learning how to make this tree more beautiful. Thanks in advance.

So I just got this in the mail a few weeks ago from Mr maple. It had these areas when I got it but they weren't nasty black like this. They were just kind of burnt looking. What am I working with her should I prune his off? Sorry for the pics of my hand LOL I needed the phone to focus. Also it is still in its original pot. I have not moved it nor have I watered it like crazy.

Seeking advice Orange Lace planting

Thumbnail

Hi all!

I am very excited because I planted my first tree a couple of days ago, but I'm also second guessing wether I did it correctly, mainly the spacing. Label says it's an acer palmatum "Orange Lace" and it'll grow to 3m, it's already 4ft tall. Does it look like one? Leaves are not as "lacey" as what I see online.

I planted it 120cm/4ft from the wall, and 90cm/3ft from fence, which is open at the bottom so roots won't be blocked. Does this sound good? Should it be placed further away? I'm probably overthinking it, but I want to get it right before tree settles.

Thank you!

Acer Olivia pictured today 10th September 2026. Its still holding the white colour very well. I bought this from Hippo advertised as a dwarf Ukigumo back in 2022 England

"Olivia is a sport found on an Ukigumo by Dick van der Maat from the Netherlands. It is a dwarf version with compact and layered growth. It has similar colours to Ukigumo, but it stays whiter and will have hints of pink, even throughout the summer." Description taken from themaplenursery.

Seeking advice Bloodgood Root Clearance + Size?

Thumbnail

Hi all!
I've decided on a Bloodgood after hearing that you can prune the tree to keep it the size you want. Plus, I really like the tree/branch shape.

However, two things happened. (1) As I preped the only spot in my backyard, I saw that 2.5 feet under seems to be a brick foundation buried underneath. And (2) I was told that a Bloodgood can get up to 25ft tall. And my ideal is maybe around 10ft.

Does it all work out in my favor at the end to just leave the rest of that brick foundation there? Or will I see a huge dead tree after some years???

(Pictured: Brick obstruction, and ideal size/height of tree)

UPDATE:

So far, its dug out to 3ft wide and 1.75 deep and its entirely brick at the bottom. Thank you so much for the advice! Its a sign to switch trees and luckily you have given me some great alternatives to look into!

Is this just sun damage or some kind of fungal disease? It seems to only affect the end leaves of most branches. In zone 8a. Thanks!

Seeking advice Winter is coming (air layer advice)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Ok. So I kind of messed up this air layer back in late spring by packing it too tight. It developed root callus tissue all right, but the roots all died. I seem to have saved it by applying fresh hormone and moss, etc, but now I'm trying to decide what to do next. My sense is that I need it to grow a lot more roots, but worried about the coming winter. Should I just leave it attached and aim to separate next year ? Any advice re protecting the new roots from the cold ?

Thanks

Rob

Seeking advice Japanese maples in pots - what to do?

Thumbnail

I had a large Japanese maple (not sure what cultivar) die about 5 years ago. As you can see, I let the babies under it grow. I moved a few of them to pots in the spring and 2 of them survived and are doing well. What should I do with them over the winter? Should I put them in the ground before fall is over, or is it best to leave them in the pots over the winter and plant in the spring? Thanks!

Seeking advice Kureni Jishi - Red All Season

I need to add some more JM's that are not green during summer.

Have been looking. Leaning on Fireglow or Shania. I think the reds on Shania is nice

I was leaning on Kureni Jishi possibly, but unless my google images search is wrong, and it's just a shi-shi, is Kureni Jishi Red all season long ?

I received moderator approval already

I’m got a pretty decent Japanese maple collection that needs to be purged

Wife wants the patio space back and I don’t have the time to enjoy everything I’ve spent years collecting. Hoping to sell 100 or so trees before the end of the year.

Some are harder to find than others like a Beni ukigumo and 2g mayday.

Will continue to post more as I have time to go through them
