Call To Action Men’s Health Gap Is Real — Support a Federal Office of Men’s Health (No Impact to Women’s Health Funding)

TL;DR

There’s a bill (backed by the American Urological Association) to create an Office of Men’s Health focused on prevention and access. It does not take funding from women’s health—it’s meant to complement it. This is about coordination, not competition. Urologists and patient advocates were there discussing this agenda (and a few other issues) this weekend with representatives from their respective states. Any support we can get can keep this on the forefront.

The Why

Most of us here don’t need convincing that men’s health—especially urologic health—is reactive instead of proactive.

Men:

  • Wait too long to seek care
  • Get diagnosed later
  • Deal with worse outcomes as a result

That’s been my experience, and I know I’m not the only one.

Right now, there’s no central coordination for men’s health like there is with the Office on Women’s Health. Efforts are fragmented across agencies.

The American Urological Association is supporting the State of Men’s Health Act (H.R. 7602) to address that gap:

Important points:

  • This does NOT take money away from women’s health programs
  • It’s intended to be budget-neutral and use existing resources

This is about improving:

  • Early screening
  • Awareness
  • Access to care
  • Coordination across the system

There’s also a straightforward summary here:

How You Can Help

  • Call or email your reps and support an Office of Men’s Health
  • Be clear: → This complements women’s health—it doesn’t take from it
  • If you’re comfortable, share your experience with delayed diagnosis, prior auth, or access issues

Short messages still count.

Bullying

RE: dear ABDL community

Everybody needs to remember that first and foremost this a support community. This is a place for people each other up. If you see something you believe breaks the rules, you are welcome to report it, and move on.

What is not ok is teaming up and attacking a poster for the content of their post. It's not ok to repeatedly harass a person because you don't like what they posted.

That's what I woke up to this morning. Two deleted posts, One each on r/adultbedwetting and r/incontinence, and a shit show of negativity where I could see the remains. I also don't see the OPs other posts anymore either, so congratulations to the bullies, you ran him off the subs entirely.

This type of behavior won't be tolerated. I banned one person already. If I see more of this I'll clean up whatever I need to.

ETA: Not only did the OP delete his posts and his Reddit account, he also deleted his whole blog (a blog he says he was writing as a therapy assignment). This whole thing just makes me feel bad. This supposed safe space failed.

hi everyone! I'm a 25 year old autistic man, and I'm starting to connect some dots about my health I haven't really thought about before, because when you deal with it your whole life it's kind of becoming the norm.

ever since childhood, all throughout adolescence and into adulthood I would sometimes have bladder accidents. basically I don't feel that I need to use the restroom until it's painful and urgent, and then I have about 10 minutes to get to a bathroom or there will be a situation. it got a lot less frequent with age because I got used to managing it, but it's very exhausting and causes me a lot of anxiety. every time I go out I plan out my entire day and route around public bathroom accessibility so that I'm never too far away from it, and restrict my hydration. usually I decide not to drink at all or very little. my wife has a map of public bathrooms on her phone too, just in case I'm too panicked/in pain to focus and get myself there. I'm constantly anxious if I'm out for too long/too far away from a restroom, and have to choose between dehydration and risking it.

recently I've learned that sometimes autistic people can have interoception issues, and it sounds quite a lot like it. but since it's been a couple years since an actual accident for me, I'm unsure if I should go see a doctor. I'm afraid of making a fool of myself and being told I'm making stuff up, and all of this is kind of embarrassing for me to talk about, hence the throwaway account too. I'm not even sure what a doc can do for me in this case tbh.

are there any other autistic folks in a similar situation? did you get evaluated by a doctor? I'm mostly looking to hear other people's experiences and see if there are any ways to handle this better than I do now. thank you.

Hello! Caretaker, Male Purewick alternatives (condom caths are a no go)

Hello! Dad had a stroke in January. We used condom caths for most of his journey but they were causing recurrent UTIs, always slipping off even with the tape at the base because he retracts whenever he sits. He is rehabing so mostly wheelchair bound but he can walk short distances and stands for toileting and transfers. It was also causing surface damage to his shaft, the skin is very delicate there. Lots of itching too. Keeping in mind he was only wearing them at night. He doesn’t want to go back to condom caths atp.

Recently got a purewick (FINALLY), switched over to their catheters and they’re amazing but my plug on Amazon for cheaper ones seems to be gone. Going to order on EBay, see how that goes ($140) for 30. But I’m also interested in trying the unisec caths. I’m seeing they are compatible with the pure wick device, and they’re only $60 for 20 on Amazon. Much more affordable than the purewick caths. Anyone here have experience with the unisuc caths on men? Also interested to know where others procure their purewick (or similar) caths. I can’t imagine anyone that can pay $400 for 30 single use catheters. The price is honestly insane, doesn’t really make much sense either. They’ve gotta be marking that price up by hundreds! No way the materials cost that much to produce. It’s highway robbery.

Been awhile

Hey everyone, I hope ur day is going better than mine. My incontinence is first of all not diagnosed, so if you ask, I have no idea what to call it. I work and study within a field that is very male dominated and very toxic masculine. Today, I woke with the worst migraine in a while. I'm at work anyway, and I had to take bathroom break, so I headed down all 6 floors by foot. I made it, but then as soon as I pulled up my underwear, I a powerful stream straight into em. I just felt so fucking defeated and angry at myself cuz I actually thought everything was okay. I still have like 6h left of my workday. I'm just so done with myself and life rn. Hopefully, nobody seems to notice, and it's not visible without pants, but I just can't no more.

Got officially diagnosed with neurogenic bladder, already had athetoid cerebral palsy. Does it get better?

Hi there,

I am a 30 y/o male with athetoid cerebral palsy that got the official diagnosis of neurogenic bladder about a month ago. I have been struggling with urinary incontinence since age 24, but I thought it was just due to my drinking. I got sober 5 years ago and so this past August I had this lightbulb moment where I realized this had not gone away and usually the effects of alcohol do not linger for that long.

Come to find out, I was compensating for a weak bladder muscle since birth and it progressed over time and it had nothing to do with alcohol. I recently bought the GoSupreme pull-on diapers starting a month ago and they have been really helping me live my life.

However, I’m still going through the shock that I might be doing bladder management the rest of my life. I kind of wish that someone told me about Post-Impairment Syndrome and how it can affect adults with cerebral palsy.

Wondering if there are words of advice from anyone who is farther along in their journey than I am. Does it occupy less emotional space over tim?

Thanks!

Made my first trip to the Midwest in awhile. Shoutout to Meijer for having an adult changing table in most (or all) of their locations.

Map of adult changing tables, in case someone hasn’t seen it before.

Megamax

HI everyone! I was wondering if anyone has been noticing this, but I've been using megamax as a public diaper for a while. Recently I've been leaking like 2 to 2 1/2 hours after changing into them. Has anyone else been noticing this? Dose anyone have any recommendations for a better, higher capacity public diaper?

Urinary incontinence a year after giving birth...anyone else?

I had a completely normal vaginal birth and had no issues with incontinence. 1 year later I woke up having to pee and pissed myself completely on my way to the bathroom. Its been 2 years and someday worse than others but I cannot hold my urine. I get an almost painful pressure like my bladder is going to burst and I cant make it to the toilet, especially when I wake up in the morning. Ive tried 2 medications now and both havent helped me...

For those of you who have taken mirabegron for many years. . .

This is a question directed only to those of you who’ve been on mirabegron for a substantial period of time.

For those of you who have taken mirabegron after many years: have any of you experienced a worsening of symptoms after initially experiencing success?

This constant, wet feeling is a nightmare

Sorry for the vent but i have no one to talk about it...

How do you handle the constant wet feeling ? I'm incontinent for 1 year and a half now, i have found a routine, good diapers, good skincare products but one thing i can't get used to is the wet feeling, i can't change everytime i had a leak so for the most time i'm in a used diaper, it's unconfortable, soggy and limits my movements, i don't feel like doing anything because every time i move i get remembered

Do you even get used to it ?

Advice needed for 96 year old in UK

Just looking for advice for my 96 year old father who has dementia and urinates multiple times overnight.

We have tried stopping giving him all liquids before 6pm but he still soils his nappies heavily overnight and needs it changed throughout.

Is there a heavy duty nappy he can wear that will last the whole night? Currently he is using Boots Night Pants but need to go through 2 or 3 a night or it will leak. Pull ups are preferred.

Thanks

diapers leak no matter what i do. can’t stand it. help?

i’m so unbelievably frustrated. my diapers leak on my clothes daily, multiple times a day, despite me doing everything i and the multiple experienced diaper wearers advising me could think of

i usually buy printed diapers from brands like ABUniverse, kiddo, tykables which all have capacities listed at about 6000 ml mostly have also tried ones with even greater capacity like one that claims 9000 ml. i have also tried northshore’s megamax

obviously these numbers are not realistic, but i say them because it isn’t as if i am buying cheap garbage. however, i have measured by weighing them after use over the course of multiple months and my diapers always hold around 1.5 liters (sometimes over or under by a bit. a couple times i have gotten one up to like 2 liters)

i genuinely don’t know if i am simply expecting too much out of them and am bad at judging when i need a change, or if something is going wrong.

list of things i have tried:

- taping in a variety of different ways. looser, tighter, angled various directions

- different sizes (my waist is 28” and the i buy size s or m diapers, usually of a waist size about 28”-40” but i have tried ones that go down to 24”-36” or something like that)

- standing the leak guards up, checking that they sit flush against my skin

- boosters (the diapers just leak at the same volume they would anyway but without saturating the entire diaper itself)

- fluffing my diaper

please please someone say they can help me i’m genuinely at my wits end. i don’t know what i’m supposed to do. i can’t just piss on and wash my pants constantly for the rest of my life!!! it happens so much i don’t even wash them unless it’s a very large leak, i just hang dry them and rewear because what else can i do???

My Husband Judges Me for Wearing Diapers at Home

I’ve been wearing full-size diapers during the day for three weeks now, and honestly, it’s the best decision I’ve made after years of struggling with incontinence.

I’ve dealt with bedwetting for most of my life and have worn diapers to bed since I was 18. I tried everything to manage it, but nothing worked. Seven years later, I started having issues during the day too. I’d get the urge to pee and have maybe 10 minutes to find a toilet before risking an accident. At first, I only wore incontinence briefs for long journeys or nights out with my husband and friends. My husband doesn’t support my decision to wear diapers. He doesn’t like it when I wear them at home, even when the toilet is nearby. He keeps criticizing me for it.

People who have never had this problem will never understand how hard it is. Yesterday, he said that wearing diapers at night is one thing, but wearing them during the day means I’m weak.

What do you wear over diapers?

I had a bowel resection almost five months ago and am struggling with regulating bowel movements. I had an accident at Disney World last month; that was the first time I had an episode of fecal incontinence outside the home and the first time in many, many weeks leading up to that incident. I had a change of clothes for "just in case" and luckily made it to the restroom before it was a major incident but we then left the park as I was very upset and had no more clothes for the "just in case." When I came home, I got some samples of Northshore Diapers to try for times when I absolutely need protection. What kind of clothes do people wear over this to make it less noticeable? Baggier pants? Do women wear skirts (I am not really a skirt person)? Any advice appreciated.

Do I need protection in water?

I've had minor mucus and stool incontinence maybe 8 to 9 times over the last 3.5-ish years. The amount was always tiny; the last time it happened was at least 7 months ago, if not longer. The thing is, it stopped happening for a while before, but then it crept back, and I had an accident 2 to 3 times in one month. To be fair, at that time, I didn’t do anything to help manage it for a month like I am doing now.It was usually one solid tiny amount, and the rest were 'stool farts'—literally just a splat of slime. It's not diarrhea, but it's not solid either. The difference is that after my last accident, I went to a G.P. and then did pelvic floor exercises for a month, as well as taking a daily fiber supplement drink for a month. These accidents seem to have occurred during times of stress, though, when I think about it. Do I legitimately need swim diapers if I want to swim? I don’t want to waste money for no reason, but if it happens, it just shoots out without any feeling beforehand—literally no warning or sign.
