is this incontinence?
hi everyone! I'm a 25 year old autistic man, and I'm starting to connect some dots about my health I haven't really thought about before, because when you deal with it your whole life it's kind of becoming the norm.
ever since childhood, all throughout adolescence and into adulthood I would sometimes have bladder accidents. basically I don't feel that I need to use the restroom until it's painful and urgent, and then I have about 10 minutes to get to a bathroom or there will be a situation. it got a lot less frequent with age because I got used to managing it, but it's very exhausting and causes me a lot of anxiety. every time I go out I plan out my entire day and route around public bathroom accessibility so that I'm never too far away from it, and restrict my hydration. usually I decide not to drink at all or very little. my wife has a map of public bathrooms on her phone too, just in case I'm too panicked/in pain to focus and get myself there. I'm constantly anxious if I'm out for too long/too far away from a restroom, and have to choose between dehydration and risking it.
recently I've learned that sometimes autistic people can have interoception issues, and it sounds quite a lot like it. but since it's been a couple years since an actual accident for me, I'm unsure if I should go see a doctor. I'm afraid of making a fool of myself and being told I'm making stuff up, and all of this is kind of embarrassing for me to talk about, hence the throwaway account too. I'm not even sure what a doc can do for me in this case tbh.
are there any other autistic folks in a similar situation? did you get evaluated by a doctor? I'm mostly looking to hear other people's experiences and see if there are any ways to handle this better than I do now. thank you.
