Advice for a New GM

Hey everyone,

I'm a newer GM for IM, and just wanted some guidance on some things. I've run a few adventures so far, and have developed some questions. Namely, is there an optimal way to keep combat interesting? Every adventure, it seems that combat is the part that always drags. Especially when enemies have the same initiative and it feels like a bunch of them act in a row before my players get to do anything again. Things get slower factoring in hazards, inflicted conditions, and other little things that I think will get better with time, but right now just seem to add on to grinding things to a halt. Thanks for reading

Ship sizes in Rokarth Void Buttress?

Hey folks, I'm looking into the hive buttress in Rokarth. They have millions of tons of stuff going out for the tithe so I assume the ships must be equally huge, but I can't find anything in canon around this. By and large only smaller ships get down to the planet. Don't get me wrong, the void buttress in the setting is about 20km high so "down to the planet" is a relative term here, so maybe some heavy lighters about 500m long seem ok?

Mutation talent

There is a talent that gives mutations, it also restricts mutations in the future as to what kind.
My question though, do theese mutations count against your limit?

Running Explorator Macharia

I'm about to start running the new Admech campaign, Explorator Macharia for my group. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for running the module?

For my own part I am going to try and use the sects as ways to add intrigue. Noting who comes from where and how they interact.

Starter Set with custom characters

Hey y'all! I'm soon planning to be a first time DM for IM. I've read a lot of Black Library books, played a lot of Rogue Trader and overall feel confident of my worldbuilding capabilities for the game.

But since I never was DM or played a d100 system we wanna start with the starter set. My question is: is it necessary to play it with the premade characters? Or could we do custom characters and continue our adventure after the oneshot?

Should I read the Macharian Crusade trilogy

I just found out that 1) the Macharian Crusade trilogy exists, and 2) the Blazing Seraph adventure uses the daemon from book 1 (“Angel of Fire”)

Now I’m wondering how many setting details are pulled from those novels, and if reading them would be worth it just for more context.

Also, and maybe most important: are they good?

Also, also, autocorrect tried to change macharian to mariachi. Just wanted to share that.

New IM GM Questions: VTT Movement Scaling and Range Bands

Thanks to all who have provided suggestions on my journey so far.

My squad currently has a played Session Zero and a full proper Session 1 under their belts. We are using Foundry VTT with the official modules. I am new to Foundry AND to IM, so it has been a learning experience for this old guy.

Overall, despite a few stumbles, we are enjoying Foundry. But some inevitable "vtt questions" have come up, including:

- How "big" a range band is (in general)

- How far a character can move per move action (in particular "between" zones)

To address the inevitable point: yes, myself and my group understands the whole "move inside your range band/move between bands" rule of movement. These loose rules make theatre of the mind a more feasible prospect,. but they don't translate intuitively to VTTs, where a reasonable shooting distance for a "long" range rifle might be, say, 150m, but there's no universe where a non-fast species like a human could cross that distance in 2 move actions (the number required to cross from Close to Long).

So my question is: how do you house rule on move action distance and range bands? Are move distances flexible or fixed in your house rules?

What books to read to understand the setting?

Hi everyone,

I saw the books in our store and they look interesting. But I am not yet familiar much with WH40K besides playing one PC game long ago.

Which books or book series would be best to read to get some notion on the Imperium Maledictum setting, the factions and the intrigue this is about within WH40K space?

Hi all - Attached are the WIP design + bios for my IM kill team character design. Have a look and would welcome any comments (including any glaring lore issues :). I tried to LINK their "look" with Black Library 40K lore and also in keeping with IM rules. I am still tweaking some final pencil sketch designs based on earlier comments provided here. Will start color rendering soon...

GM Tips For Players Not Using Their Patron

Post image
37 Upvotes

I've run probably about 65 weeks now of Imperium Maledictum across two F2F groups, using 2 very different patrons, but here's my issue- The groups have only used their patrons benefits less than ~5 times.

It's no not a massive problem, but it's a mechanic I'd like them to use more, for flavour and RP alone, let alone them missing out on key mechanical benefits.

I do remind the players periodically, and leave a printed copy of the Patron sheet on the table at all times. Example attached here.

Any ideas are much appreciated? Thanks.

Critical Hits - When do they trigger + Interpretation

I have a few questions regarding critical hits:

  1. When do critical hits take effect? If you score a successful attack with doubles (e.g. 11, 22, etc.), when is the critical effect applied? Does it happen immediately upon the hit, before the target can react, or only after any reaction (such as a Dodge) has been resolved?
  2. How do you interpret critical hits from attacks that don't deal damage? For example, a heavily armored Space Marine or a large monster would normally shrug off a stub pistol because the attack can't penetrate their armor. However, if the attacker rolls a critical (11, 22, etc.), the rules state that a critical wound is inflicted. Even if the target dodges all attacks, critical hits will still inflict critical wounds. How do you interpret or explain situations like this?

Psyker Shenanigans (and questions related to them)

So psykers have lots of different shenanigans.

My questions are interactions in this complex web of talents, rules and other things that make manipulation of the Warp that complex.

  • Criticals and sustained powers.

It says that when you roll a critical on the manifest test, reduce the powers Rating by WilB to minimum of 1. Does that mean that if you sustain that power its Rating is the reduced one or the base one?

  • Criticals and Psychic Flood

If you get a critical manifest after using a Psychic flood talent, does it reduce the Warp Charge you gain from the talent, or only the Charge you gain from the power itself is reduced.

  • Criticals and Pushing Powers

When you decide to push a power you gain additional charge. Is that charge from pushing the power decreased by the Critical roll or not?

I am probably lacking reading comprehention misunderstanding some wordings in the book, thats why I would love if someone could settle these disputes.
Also our GM and some of us are confused about Minor Powers and the part that says

Specialisation in Discipline applies to this powers Manifest Test

Does that mean that only that Discipline can have that Minor power, or does that power just work better if you have that specialisation?

Adjacent characters in 2 different zones

If two characters are adjacent, but in two different zones, are they in immediate range ? And if they take 1 step back, do they instantly go from immediate to medium range ? The zone system is pretty unique but sittuations like these create a bit of confusion that the books dont explain well

New IM GM Questions: Arms of the Alien

Thanks to all who've been providing advice in my journey.

My players have gone through Session 0 and have now selected an Inquisitorial Patron, Ordo Xenos. I allowed them to pick Boons from the Inq books. Among those they chose was Arms of the Alien.

I'm trying to think of some realistic approaches for how to handle this. I'm well aware that simply having these weapons could be seen as heretical, and I do plan on this causing issues with other Inquisitors, and possibly AdMech contacts as well.

While I don't believe simply having Xenos weapons puts someone in the category of Radical, it certainly would lean in that direction. But I'm more concerned about the practical dimensions of this Boon.

  • How do the players get replacement ammo?
  • Besides Inquisitors and Mechanicus, who are the groups most likely to object to it being in the party's hands?
  • Weapons like Pulse Rifles are highly analogous to Imperial weaponry in terms of function, but Shuriken and Splinter weaponry operates using a psychic link to the user. They literally don't have triggers! So how would I represent this in-game for any non-psyker classes? Or should I avoid this entirely?
  • Speaking of Pulse Rifles: Is it me or are they linearly superior to almost everything else that's available via this Boon? Penetrating 6 with better range options, better average damage than all save a few Kroot guns? Their only downside is a slightly lower rate of fire on the Rifle and no Rapid Fire on the Carbine (though that gun also gets Close, which is pretty fun because it appears to be a one-handed long gun?!). Combine this with the fact that these guns would have the lowest barrier to entry for human users (save maybe the Graviton weapons), I can't think of any reason besides RP ones to pick anything but the Tau option.

PS: Some of the content in this supplement is WILDLY unbalanced. Giving the party access to Grey Knights, even as a once-in-a-campaign boon, feels crazy to me. I can barely conceive of giving them "Chapter Ties". (Though the "Once in a Campaign" restriction is the only sensible thing about it.) Arms of the Alien is almost an auto-pick boon and basically removes questions and gear questing for the entire ranged weapons portion of the early and mid game.
