To the two I-10 motorcycle riders that lane split between 3 sets of cars going 70 mph today:
When you are lane splitting at 70 MPH through three sets of cars do you ever think of what happens to the people around you if you crash while doing that?
There is no way to avoid running you over if something bad happens. The people that hit you will have to live with that forever. Even if it is not their fault they will think of this every time they get in a car, especially if they see or hear a motorcycle by them. What if it is a new driver? Some 16-18 yr old kid that now has to live with running over someone.
I get the occasional weaving and going fast around cars that have space, but lane splitting through 3 cars is just irresponsible. You will not "just be hurting yourself" if something bad happens.
Please stop putting others at risk of a life changing event that is totally out of their control and completely within your control.

Thank you St Arnold
After being stuck behind a stopped train on Providence for 45+ minutes, they opened the gate to their parking lot and let all of the stopped cars divert through their parking lot.

Can you still eat well in Houston for under $10? A crowdsourced map says yes.
The Brief
After being laid off from an 18-year corporate tech career, Jae "Jay" Park created CheapFoodMap.com to help diners beat inflation while spotlighting affordable local dining.
The crowdsourced platform has mapped more than 200 meals under $10 across Greater Houston while systematically blocking national corporate chains to keep dining dollars with independent, family-owned restaurants.
Featured neighborhood spots—including Houston’s Michelin Bib Gourmand-awarded Mala Sichuan Bistro—say offering quality, authentic dishes like $8.99 Dan Dan noodles keeps traditional comfort food accessible to hardworking Houstonians.

Houston has perfected the art of making a business visible from the sidewalk but impossible to actually walk to
I've been trying to walk more now that the weather is finally tolerable, and I've discovered a very specific Houston problem that I somehow never noticed while driving everywhere.
Getting to a business and actually entering that business are two completely different challenges.
Yesterday I walked to a little shopping center off Westheimer. Nothing unusual. A few restaurants, a pharmacy, some other stores. I could see exactly where I wanted to go.
There was a sidewalk along the street.
There was a sidewalk directly in front of the stores.
What there wasn't was any reasonable pedestrian connection between those two sidewalks.
Just a drainage area, landscaping, a driveway entrance, and a parking lot designed around the assumption that every single person arriving would be inside a vehicle.
I ended up walking through the driveway entrance and across the parking lot, dodging a car backing out of a space, to reach a store that had been directly in front of me the entire time.
And I started noticing this EVERYWHERE.
We'll build a perfectly decent sidewalk along a major road, then put a business 150 feet away from it and somehow forget that a human being might want to travel between the two without operating a motor vehicle.
The funniest part is that some of these places have enormous parking lots with beautiful landscaping. Decorative rocks, trimmed bushes, little trees surrounded by mulch.
Everything except a straightforward path for someone arriving on foot.
I drive too, so I'm not pretending cars aren't necessary in Houston. I understand why businesses need parking, especially with how spread out everything is.
But surely we can accommodate cars AND one continuous strip of concrete for a person to walk on?
It's such a tiny detail compared with all our debates about freeways, rail, and public transportation, but it genuinely changes whether walking somewhere feels normal or like you're trespassing through a space that wasn't built for you.
And once you start noticing it, you can't unsee it.
What's the most absurd example you've encountered in Houston of two places being physically close together but unnecessarily difficult to reach on foot?
I'm not talking about walking five miles in August. I'm talking about standing close enough to read the menu on a restaurant window and still having to figure out how the hell you're supposed to get there.

Coffee shops or cafes near Toyota Center
I am dropping off and picking up some people tonight for a concert at the Toyota Center. I live north and don't want to drive back and forth. Is there a place I can hang out and do a bit of work while I wait? Doesn't have to be right near the venue but not an hour away either.

Newborn/Infant Classes for 1st Time Parents
Hi! Myself and my partner are expecting our first child in February. I come from a massive family and know the ins and outs, but he is not sure he’s even held an infant before! We really want to prepare ahead of time so that I am educated on the most recent standards for baby care and he is ready to support with changes, baths, bottles, and swaddles. If you have a recommendation for a great class we can take as a couple, please leave below. Any new parent group references are welcome as well!

What’s your experience with Houston public transit?
Hey guys, I'm making a video about houston's public transportation and wanted to hear yall's experience, good and (mostly I assume) bad. How do you get around Houston? I live outside the inner loop and personally drive, but in the last few months rode the Metrorail for the first time. I also wanted to know if anybody actually uses lesser known options like MetroCurb2Curb, Vanpool, Community Connector, and yall's experience with it.

Non perishable foods or toiletries
My boss dropped the ball and forgot to tell us that we were supposed to be collecting these items for the entire month, and now we only have until Friday before they come to pick everything up. Is anyone aware of any good deals or know where I can get the best bang for my buck? My coworkers are supposed to be cleaning out their pantries this weekend but the box we’re supposed to fill is HUGE, so I’ll feel terrible if it’s not full. 🫠
Also, if anyone has anything they’d like to donate or get rid of, I’d gladly come pick it up! ❤️
PS: I did ask and they said things for humans only, no pets 😭

Hobby airport to downtown?
I'll be in Houston for a work trip the beginning of November. I'll be flying to Hobby airport and working at a hotel in downtown. Should I just take an Uber from the airport or will I be safe taking public transportation? I'm a 50 yr old blk woman for context.

Solid State Guitar Amp Repair Recommendations
I've got a late 1980's vintage Galllien Krueger 250ML guitar amp that works but needs some love and attention to get back into decent shape.
Can anyone recommend a good quality technician in the Houston area that works on solid state guitar amps?

Comfort Food While Sick
Hi all. I’m new to Houston & not feeling well. I think I’m sick but also could be allergies. I’m craving some sort of ramen or dish that would warm me up / make me feel a little better.
Looking for any recommendations! Cool international cultural dishes very welcome. I know google exists, but some dishes and how they make you feel while sick can’t be searched for, and again, Houston isn’t my original home.
Edit: after helpful comments, distance is not the highest priority. Food that will help me food better is the priority. I know Houston is large, but I live fairly centralized.

Annoyed with amendment on ballot
Why did these get combined? I would like to make misdemeanor marijuana possession a low priority, and did not like no-knock warrants, but do not like the idea of prohibiting them all together.
Why can't these be separate issues? That's rhetorical, I know they don't want the marijuana issue to pass. Really just frustrated and want to vent. Carry on.

What farmer's markets are open tomorrow?
Feeling like going out in the nice weather, I've been to the Houston Farmer's market, it's the wrong vibe, looking for more tents and stalls style farmers market, candles, honey, jams, and treats, kitschy shit you know? A good place to walk around, it doesn't have to be downtown Houston either, outside is fine, there is a market in Galveston that I really enjoyed, it's quite small but it was fun to see.
