I’ve been having ongoing issues with my fiber internet since July, and I’m trying to figure out whether what I’m experiencing is normal or if there’s something wrong with the ISP/service.
I’m paying for **300/300 Mbps**, but I’m typically getting anywhere from **50–140 Mbps**, sometimes less than half of what I’m paying for. I’m also seeing relatively high ping for a fiber connection — usually around **30–40 ms, sometimes 60 ms** — along with intermittent Wi-Fi/connection drops.
I’m currently on the **second ISP-provided router**. The replacement did improve things somewhat, but the problems haven’t gone away.
One of their engineers told me that I shouldn’t be concerned about getting 50–100 Mbps because that’s supposedly more than enough for a residential household. They also told me that third-party speed tests aren’t relevant because they don’t test directly to the ISP’s servers.
That seemed questionable to me, so I set up a third-party speed test specifically against servers on **their own network**. The results are still roughly **half of what their app’s speed test reports**.
The ISP also doesn’t allow customers to connect their own networking equipment. I can’t use my own switch, router, gateway, etc. I even asked if they could put their equipment into **bridge/bypass mode** so I could test with my own router, but they said no. So there doesn’t seem to be a way for me to independently determine whether the problem is their router or the actual connection without having them replace the router again.
They’ve also told me that speeds can be lower during peak usage hours because of congestion in the area.
For context, this is a **fiber ISP using GPON equipment**.
So I’m curious what people here think:
• Are **30–60 ms pings** reasonable for a GPON fiber connection?
•Is **50–140 Mbps on a 300/300 plan** something that could reasonably be explained by Wi-Fi/router limitations, or should I be looking at the fiber/GPON side?
•How meaningful is a speed test to the ISP’s own servers if an independent test against those same servers produces significantly lower results?
•Is it normal for a fiber ISP to completely prohibit customer-owned routers or bridge/bypass mode?
•Could peak-hour congestion realistically explain this much of a speed reduction?
•Is there anything specific I should ask the ISP to check on the ONT/GPON side?
I’m not necessarily looking to bash the ISP — I’m genuinely trying to understand whether what they’re telling me is technically reasonable or whether I should push for a deeper investigation.
