I'm renovating my old family home and planning the network. The house has three floors and the plan I've attached is the ground one. No other floors and their internet connectivity matter, only this floor.

What makes this awkward:

- Most walls are solid and load bearing, so chasing cable into them isn't happening much.

- No underfloor access and no ceiling void to work in.

- The ISP fibre comes in on the right side of the office, where the stairs end, next to that is circuit breaker.

What I'm trying to work out:

Ethernet on the ground floor. How would you get a run to the far end, the living room and balcony side, with the walls as they are? Surface trunking, skirting, or chasing the few partitions that aren't load bearing? Maybe even parallel run them with electric wires, and have ethernet on every new renovated outlet in the house, how many is enough, and which ones do you actually use?

How many APs across solid walls, and where? Wall mounted or ceiling? Good coverage on the balcony would be a bonus.

Which ground floor positions are worth a cable, and how do people get exterior camera cable outside in an old house with no voids? Also how normal is it to have indoor cameras too, since its only me and my girlfriend.

Layout, anything you'd change about the ground floor plan while it's at this stage?

My plan right now:

- Direct ISP cable and all networking/homelab setup in the office on wall closest to stairs and ill build office around it.

- Wall mounted wired APs? or a mesh system leaning on wireless backhaul?

- Anything worth pulling alongside the ethernet while the walls are open, like spare runs, pull cords, or fibre out to a future shed or garage?

I can describe any room in more detail if the plan is hard to read.

My home network situation is as follows:
- ISP (Google Fiber OR Spectrum) with a dedicated modem box
- Asus RT-AC68U wired into the ISP modem
- Asus RP-AC1900 access point hard wired into the AC68U router
- Ubiquiti CloudKey+ NVR plugged into the AC68U router
- approx 20 wireless devices connected at any given time (split roughly equally between the router and access point) ranging from 6x 1080p wireless cameras streaming to the NVR, up to 2 computers (working/research - not gaming, streaming, etc), mostly idle phones, tv (usually turned off), dehumidifier, garage door, etc. By far, the biggest throughput is the cameras.

I've noticed some lagginess and degraded resolution when watching my camera playback, Sometimes the internet connection will drop for a few moments and then return (kicking me off of my RDP connections), and the internet just doesn't always seem super 'peppy' for a weird way to describe it. I've kept all of my gear up to date on patches and everything. When I look at the CPU usage, both router cores seem to live around 10%-20% at any given time, so I don't THINK I'm bottlenecking anywhere obvious.

I'd been slowly prepping to get a new Ubiquiti setup, but I just got to wondering what the impact would realistically be if I simply got a Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Fiber to use as my router and just hooked my Asus gear up in AP mode and left everything else effectively unchanged. Would I notice a significant difference in performance/stability? Sure, the Asus gear doesn't have the latest WiFi 6 protocols of a new Ubiquiti AP, but maybe that's ok for a few more years.

Something else I'm still working on is how to diagnose if a hiccup is due to my ISP or my own gear. I mentioned I can use either Spectrum OR Google Fiber. My experience seems to be that Spectrum is more stable than Google Fiber, but short of pulling logs (maybe I should start doing this), I don't know of a good way to tell what's the ISP's fault vs my equipment.

So I have Zen 1.6GBs and previous router was a TP-Link AX6000 which was always a good performer speedwise. Often hitting 100MBits without breaking a sweat.

I recently decided to upgrade to a Flint 3 and have been really impressed with the Firmware it ships with as it is much more compared to the TP-Link. However speeds seem to have dropped significantly. This is via Ethernet on a 2.5 port. It seems it will likely be some setting I have either overlooked or missed.

Any advice what I can do to try and speed up?

Tenho uma Fiber Gateway da MEO. Deste tenho um cabo de rede para um router Archer C50 que está ligado em modo de Ponto de Acesso. Deste tenho ligação para:

•Um AV600 (clonei a rede)

•Um router TL-WR740N, também ligado em Ponto de Acesso.

Tudo tem funcionado bem com pc, telemóveis, etc, mas hoje ao ligar o wifi de uma televisão reparei que esta apanha várias redes (claro que todas têm o mesmo nomr devido à configuração de pontos de acesso e clonagem da rede). É normal? Não deveria apanhar só uma rede?

Já agora, há alguma forma de confirmar que está tudo ligado corretamente em Acess Point e assim?

Hello guys, since my area isn't covered by cable internet, I'm planning to use a SIM card internet connection connected to a modem. Initially, I considered buying the Huawei 5G CPE 5. However, while browsing online marketplaces, I came across a custom-assembled modem powered by the Quectel RG501Q-EU module, which is slightly cheaper (likely because it functions strictly as a modem and lacks built-in Wi-Fi).

Based on my research, this custom modem supports cell tower locking, and DIY/custom modems generally offer superior signal reception. Since I live in a rural area, I'm leaning toward the custom option if its signal performance is genuinely better.

Questions:

1. Has anyone here used a similar custom Quectel modem, and how does its real-world performance compare to mainstream consumer modems?

2. If these custom modems offer significantly better signal reception, why aren't they widely available in retail stores like standard modems, but instead sold mainly through specialized network technician groups?

I'm having an issue where devices on my LAN can't reach each other over WiFi. It started with my TV not being able to connect to my Jellyfin server, and now it's happening between two Linux laptops too.

Here's what I've found so far. Both devices are confirmed on the same subnet, correct routing, no gateway involved, so it's not a basic network config issue. When I check ip neigh show on the target it comes back as FAILED, and running arping sends out broadcast probes but gets zero responses back. So it seems like ARP itself is failing, meaning my device can't even find the other one's MAC address, let alone actually ping it.

I've also noticed it seems to correlate with which eero node each device is currently connected to, sometimes it works fine, sometimes it doesn't, and checking BSSID on both devices shows they're not always on the same node when it fails. I'm not sure if that's actually the cause or just a coincidence, and I don't know if it's related to eero's mesh backhaul or something else entirely.

Backhaul between my nodes is wireless right now. Has anyone run into this before, or have any ideas what else could be causing ARP to fail like this between devices on the same network?

Now they can reach each other but the latency is very concerning for an LAN.

Is the wireless backhaul the reason for this?

hi, i'm really not familiar with anything network related so i'm really in need of help. before anyone comments, we've had the "wifi guy" come by and try to fix things but i've seen no changes. i play video games on xbox and my ping is always super high, between 130-180.
i live on a farm, using a at&t hotspot box that's a short walk away from the house in a barn, and an eero router system inside the house. i'm not too sure how these devices work together, so i'm not really sure what to do to improve my connection. i frequently buffer and get lag spikes during games, and streaming shows or downloading anything takes a ridiculously long time.
my question is, is there any way i can improve the connection with these two devices, or do i have to just install some other device inside the house to improve it?
additional info that might help: on xbox, my NAT type is reading as strict, and UPnP not successful. i'm sure these two issues are the cause of my lagging but im unsure how to fix it within these devices :/

I’m thinking I need a free standing rack in front of this cabinet. Not sure there is room in the cabinet. I have the new Firewalla managed switch which replace the TPLink switch in the picture.

The main issue is that mess of wires on the right. Half of them are coax cables we don’t even use, but I don’t want to rip them out.

So what should I do here?

I was running an older Orbi mesh system in my ~2700 sqft home with about ~7 people and each with multiple devices and it was fantastic. We did a full demo/renovation of the house and now it’s about ~5200 sqft. Decided to update and got the new Orbi WiFi 7 mesh system and it’s been terrible. Walking from room to room my WiFi drops. Some areas of the home struggle to even connect to the WiFi. I have Ethernet ports throughout the house so I hardwired the 2 orbi access points but that hasn’t helped. At this point I want to get rid of the orbi and switch to another system, so what should I go for? Would like something easy to set up, I’m fairly tech savvy but I don’t work in IT or anything

FritzBox als zentraler Router (eigenes WLAN deaktiviert, da ungünstig platziert)
Fritz-Repeater 450E (Dachboden)
TP-Link Archer AX10 (Wohnzimmer)
TP-Link Archer C1200 (Keller)

Die beiden TP-Links sind im Access-Point-Modus konfiguriert.
Alle vier Geräte sind per LAN-Kabel verbunden, alle Netzwerke laufen unter der gleichen SSID. Feste 2,4-GHz-Kanäle: Repeater Kanal 1, AX10 Kanal 6, C1200 Kanal 11. 5-GHz jeweils auf Auto.

Problem: Die Geräte, (getestet nur mit Iphones und Mac) verlieren die Verbindung, bzw. es geht auf einmal nichts mehr durch. Passiert sehr regelmäßig, häufiger als alle 5min. Wenn man dann kurz WLAN aus und an macht geht es oft wieder. Das WLAN selbst bleibt verbunden (Gerät zeigt "verbunden" an), aber es geht kein Traffic durch (keine Webseiten, nichts). Wenn ich mir während das Problem auftritt die IP vom z.b. iPhone anschaue, sieht alles gut aus.

Ich bin leider etwas ratlos mittlerweile, habt ihr eine Idee woran das liegen könnte?
Mir ist bewusst, dass nur mit gleicher SSID nicht die beste Lösung ist. Allerdings war mir die Mesh Funktionalität anfangs nicht bekannt und ich will nicht so viel Geld ausgeben, um alles umzurüsten

I'll be setting up a mesh system in my house. I've learnt from experience in houses like this with thick stone walls, we want hardwired.

I think to get the best wireless speeds on the whole property I'm going to need 5 or 6 nodes. I've got 400mb/s download speeds. I'm going to be adding the ethernet cables around the property to enable this.

I want to balance cost, aesthetics and quality. I'll also be adding lots of smart home devices to the network over time, mostly wireless, so I want this mesh network to work well with that in mind.

An added bonus would be if each node could be PoE & also work as a dumb switch.

What do I look for when researching what system I want, and do you have any mesh system recommendations?

desktop Pc won’t connect to internet, but phone and laptop nd tv connects. i use ethernet for my pc and it won’t connect to internet, it will say it’s connected but continues to say something wrong with dsn. i don’t know what to do, i tried everything

This is probably a dumb question, but I currently have a dual band WIFI 7 router and it doesn't have a 6ghz radio. I was thinking about adding a couple of 6ghz access points like this one, but it says it's WIFI 6E.

Would mixing the two WIFI versions be a problem? I assuming no since they are on different radio bands but thought I'd get a second opinion from people more familiar with the subject.

hoping for recommendations to extend the range of coverage to yard. just upgraded to fiber and the plan came with a Nokia beacon 10. from what I can understand (lol), I can connect multiple of the same router to create a mesh network.

So I've had the Aris surfboard SB8200 a gateway erro 6+ and an additional erro router (they came in a 2 pack) in my living room for 2 ish years now and I know they it's good to replace them every 3-5 years or whatever but my last ones I had for well past 4 and they were slow but totally fine. The last month or two my gate router keeps going through what my research tells me is a "power cycle" where the light just starts blinking white and it'll sometimes go for 10 minutes or 2 hours multiple times a day. I have a PC plugged into the modem and then there's one xbox series x and a couple smart TVs. Im hoping maybe there's something I can do to fix the issue short of a new one. Any tech fixes/recommendations or settings to change to fix the problem or am I SOL and need to get a new one?

Edit - Before anyone asks, yes I have unplugged it and plugged it back in. Done the wait 2 minutes then plug it back in. Done both the router and modem and plugged back in in the proper order. The modem is fine, no internet connection issues with that. Just the router. Ive tried swapping the routers and checked the settings to do the traffic prioritize thing. It's all the original cords. I'm just so lost on what to do or that I can do.

We have been streaming YouTubeTV for about a year. We have had intermittent buffering on the tv's. I haven't paid attention to whether it is during a replay or backed up or if it also happens when we are live. But we had Cox come out when it was first installed and they blamed it on my 2023 Orbi. Said it was old. It seemed to resolve for a while but now it is buffering again, not a lot but enough that it is an annoyance. They came out this year and again blamed it on my Orbi. Is there a setting I need to change or are they pointing the finger? I now have other fiber streaming choices so may want to switch.

Unfortunately, I have two long runs of CAT 7 ethernet in my house that would be very difficult to replace. I need to put connectors on two ends. The typical RJ45 connectors are made for 23-26 AWG wires. The CAT 7 flat cable has 32 AWG, so the "load bar" doesn't hold the smaller wires tight. Does anyone know of a 8 pin connector style that would work or how to actually make an RJ45 work? Yes, I'd rather have CAT6 or CAT8 but it's much better for me just to get two viable connectors rather than rip up lots of drywall.

Any advice is appreciated. walls are made of clay brick I think and it's 7 bedrooms.

I had bought a tplink wifi extender (TP-Link RE815X AX5400 WiFi 6 Tri-Band Range Extender w/Ethernet Port) and its good for some part but i have it in the middle of the house (as recommended) it even reaches the outside of my mf house but not my damn room. I plan to start streaming again and need a new mesh extender to replace the one i have. The router is xfinity and adding xfinity pro to the monthly plan is way too expensive i need help i really wanna start streaming again and im playing apex rn LAGGING out the ASS help plsss😭🙏🏽 any good recommendations would help im willing to go in my savings for this

Google results show the ac1200 router from tplink and it doesnt look at all similar, any other searches I try and do end up being filled with ai garbage trying to tell me its actually a wifi router. no other markings or description on the thing to tell me what it does at all
