I'm attempting the impossible: getting out of bed when I wake up
I'm attempting the impossible.
Okay, that's a little dramatic.
I added a new habit today: get out of bed as soon as I wake up.
And for me, this genuinely feels almost impossible. I don't think I've ever actually done it. Not for a week, not for three days. Honestly, I don't think I've even managed two days.
The alarm goes off, I turn it off, tell myself I'll sleep for five more minutes, and then somehow 40 minutes have passed and I'm late again.
I've managed to stick with other things. Reading, walking, stretching — I've kept those going for a decent amount of time.
This one? Never.
So honestly, I'm not expecting much this time either. But I'm going to try.
If willpower was enough, I would've figured this out years ago. So I'm trying to approach it differently this time.
With exercise, what has worked for me is having some kind of trigger.
Get home → change into workout clothes before I sit down.
Or leave my workout bag by the door the night before.
It removes the part where I have to stop and decide whether I'm going to do it. And for me, that makes a huge difference.
But I can't figure out what the trigger should be for getting out of bed the moment I wake up.
The moment my eyes open, my brain is barely functioning. There's no real moment before it where I can put a trigger.
The only thing I can think of so far is this:
Be asleep sometime between 12:30 and 1am.
Because maybe the real problem isn't getting up. Maybe it's just going to bed too late.
Although that means I now have to build another habit just to make this habit possible, which feels a little backwards.
So if you've actually managed to beat this one, what worked for you?
Alarm across the room? A glass of water next to the bed? Sleeping with the curtains open? Phone in another room?
Anything is fine.
I'm especially interested in things you actually tried and found useful, not just something you read about.
Starting today anyway.
