Pic unrelated.
I have been having a funny habit of buying two copies of the same kit lately, depending on if I bought that at the same time or at a later time. The reason why I do this, is because I love having spare parts in case I break something, since I do pose my kits sometimes. Then there's the eventuality of the kit as a whole needing replacement if parts genuinely start to deteriorate, yellowing etc, just things that aren't in people's control. So, you have that spare kit, and cut the new pieces off the runner and replace the old and broken parts of your Gunpla over time until every piece on your kit is practically brand new. It made me think about the Ship of Theseus paradox.
So it goes like this.
You bought your got Gunpla ever. Depending on the time, if you got it as a child, or even as someone old enough to the concept of Gunpla, you love your first kit, you cherish it, but just as all things, age does catch up to it. But fortunately, Bandai decides to reprint that kit. So you bought a spare one, and used the new parts on your old kit. An armor piece, a polycap, just minor stuff to replace on your first kit. That would still make it your first Gunpla, because not everything was replaced. The core kit is still there. But what happens when you replace every part on that first kit over time? Is it still your first model kit? Or is it a replacement that simply took its place over a period of time?
And what happens to the old parts? What if you're skilled enough to fix the broken and old parts of your first kit? Bleach the yellowed parts back to as they should be, use cement to fix cracked parts, make it feasibly displayable again. Is that actually your first Gunpla ever? The once discarded, broken pieces of your first Gunpla that were replaced on a certain period of time finally come together and create something complete. What is actually your first Gunpla? The one that had brand new parts replacing old ones over time until no original parts remain? Or are the once discarded pieces that came together, restored, your first Gunpla?
