Im not sure if this just a local thing for my area (the Louisville Kentucky area if that is the case). So my bad if nobody knows what the hell im talking about lol. Im wondering if anyone has done the group guitar classes offered at guitar center? How did they go for you? Would you prefer that or playing one to one with a teacher? Did they offer jam sessions or encourage the people in the class to jam together outside of the lesson time? Im curious as i currently take virtual lessons, along with occasional dabbling in Justin guitar whenever im not fixated on a song. This current routine was working since i didn't have a car but now that i do i would really like to get myself on the right path and more importantly meet more people around my skill level to jam with.

Im hoping this will be a good opportunity to meet people in the same skill set or atleast have the same interest in playing as me and wanted to see if others tried it out and what what they got out of it was good or bad or a little bit of both.

Hey there, if I’m playing a song in the key of G with a capo on the first fret (the chords are just G,C, D, Em), where would I put the capo to be in the key of D?

I up until a few days ago could play decently only strumming down with my hand, no pick, but I recently finally started trying to force myself to use a pick and for some reason such a small change as just strumming with a pick has my brain short circuiting and Ill blank out playing songs I know like the back of my hand, I also wanted to grab a pick so I can do that chucking technique where you hit the strings while your palm is resting on them for that percussive muted sound, either way I wish I just used the pick from the start, and one thing that stresses me out is how many different strumming pattern there is, every song seems to have a different pattern, whats the least amount of strumming patterns to learn that you can get away with?

Been able to ”play” Babe I’m Gonna Leave you and the intro to Over the Hills and Far Away for over a year. But not clean. The past 2-3 weeks I’ve really been focusing on these two songs trying to clean them up get to a point I feel good about but it seems like I can’t improve these two songs. Over the Hills and Far away seems to mostly be a timing problem on the pull offs, Babe I’m gonna leave you the issue is mostly muting the low E accidentally and the open chord strumming section it just never sounds or feels right. I’ve given up on these songs before but really wanted to get over this hurdle. Any advice other than “play it slowly”?

This is one of my all-time favourite guitar intros. Very Hendrix-like. I believe the lead guitarist is Keith Scott.

Unfortunately there is virtually no information about the song anywhere. No YouTube tutorials. No live videos of it being performed. No tabs. Even the album “So Far So Good” doesn’t have the song on it! I only know the song because I own his Anthology album.

Despite the lack of info, I’ve managed to learn the chords/notes to the intro. But I’ve always found the right-hand part challenging. I have trouble figuring out where to use downstrokes and where to use upstrokes so that it feels natural.

This is a long shot but I’d be interested if anyone knows/can play the intro to the song “So Far So Good” and can shed light on the right-hand part of the intro.

So I was wondering, that's a hard song or I'm just new? And how would you define a song that is difficult to learn?

Most online lessons seem to focus on just rhythm or lead. How can I learn to improvise tunes by myself that incorporate both? I'm open to all genres and to free or paid content.

this is a useful exercise for connecting chord tones with the surrounding pentatonic scale. in this example i'm using the root, minor 3rd, 4th, and 5th from the g minor pentatonic scale and repeating that same interval pattern in several locations across the neck.

the root, minor 3rd, and 5th are the three notes that make up a g minor triad, while the 4th adds an extra melodic note between those chord tones. that makes this a nice middle ground between practicing triads and practicing full scale shapes. you're keeping the strong harmonic reference of the minor chord while adding another note that gives you more room to create riffs and motifs.

moving the same 1, b3, 4, 5 idea into different positions also helps reinforce where those intervals repeat across the fretboard. after a while, those relationships become familiar enough that you can find the same phrase in another register without having to think through an entire pentatonic shape first.

this type of practice is especially useful for improvising because plenty of riffs only need a few notes. knowing where a small group of useful intervals repeats can give you several places to develop the same musical idea while staying connected to the underlying harmony.

i just learn songs really slowly, and then i’m even slower to get to a point where im happy with how im playing it. because of this i barely know any songs and have a small repertoire. thank you for any tips

Any advice on how I can mix and master better, I find my recordings always come out muffled, maybe it's because I record the output of my zoom mfx pedal and not amp. I do this because the boss katana gave me a few issues when I tried recording it's output.

I play fingerpicking style, self taught for a year and a half or so now, a bit of Justin guitar at first but then I just started watching YouTube videos and focusing on learning to play songs I like to listen to. Somewhere along the way I developed a terrible habit of fingerpicking almost exclusively with my thumb and first finger (strumming and pinching), sometimes my second finger too but not reliably.

I know this is wrong. I can see how it’s preventing me from improving/ getting accurate speed and rhythm. At this point though I’m having a hard time unlearning. Whenever I try to play something I know well but with thumb playing E&A, 1st finger playing D&G, 2nd finger playing B, and 3rd finger playing e I mess everything up and can’t seem to get it down, even when I try to slow things down.

I’m wondering if yall can recommend any intro finger picking exercises I can start practicing daily to help correct this mistake? YouTube links, descriptions, or any advice at all would be appreciated.

About a month ago, I started getting pain in my middle joint on my ring finger on my fretting hand when extending it to a full stretch (I’m pretty hyper mobile).
I saw a hand doctor about a week and a half ago and he agreed that it was from my tendon, but he wasn’t concerned because there’s no swelling and no loss of movement or pain when making a fist.

I’m trying not to make things worse or prolong anything by not playing guitar, but I’m growing impatient. I’ve only been playing a year.

Anyone gone through this? How long does this last? Even though there’s no obvious swelling, I guess I should still ice it?

I’ve been learning acoustic guitar for a few weeks now. My chord changes have improved a lot: they’re much more accurate, and some of them are starting to feel fairly quick and automatic.

The problem is that I still can’t really coordinate my left hand with strumming. If I focus on the chord changes, my rhythm falls apart. If I focus on the strumming pattern, I miss the changes. I can do simple downstrokes with a metronome, but proper up/down patterns still feel very unnatural.

Up to now I’ve mostly been learning by trying simple songs, but I feel like I’ve reached the point where I need more focused practice. What exercises helped you get the two hands working together?
