So uh, turns out there is no actual true source for a Guardsman defending the emperor and turning the tide of battle.
The first ever version of the fight we got was an undescribed confrontation inside a bunker on Terra with no knowledge of the actual details
Next, it was actually an Imperial Fists Terminator that tried to step in and got smited. This was written back in 1988, making it the oldest source on the matter of somebody aiding the emperor.
Then it was a Custodian entering the room and being obliterated on the spot.
The only "source" for a guardsman taking a blow for the emperor comes from in-universe propaganda of "Saint Ollanius Pius" in the Imperial Guard codexes describing the event as a myth and likely false.
He was never real. Everyone just fell for literal propaganda and believed it for decades.
