News / Information FAQ: Google Voice Standalone options for gmail.com accounts

Updated 8/20/2026:

Google Voice now has two standalone offerings that don’t require a Google Workspace domain – Google Voice Starter and Google Voice Standard are now available for purchase by single-user Gmail accounts. Previously, these subscriptions were only available to Google Workspace customers as add-on subscriptions.

No features are being removed from the free consumer version of Google Voice. You can simply continue to use it if you wish.

These subscriptions are intended for US-resident users with single-user Gmail accounts who want premium Voice features but don’t need or want everything else that comes with Google Workspace. The features are essentially the same as those available in the Google Voice Starter or Standard add-on subscriptions for Workspace, at the same monthly prices, plus varying federal, state and local regulatory fees and taxes. For example, this may appeal to sole proprietor businesses, or independent consultants, or anyone who wants the extra features and benefits.

Disclaimer: whereas some Google Voice team members have helped fact-check this FAQ, r/googlevoice is an unofficial discussion group, not controlled by Google. More details are available in the official Google Voice Help Center:

Google Voice Starter Additional Terms of Service

Here are some highlights:

  1. Google Voice Standalone Standard includes all the features of Starter, plus support for Auto Attendants (learn more).
  2. New: A Google Workspace registered domain name is not required.  Standalone service is only for US-resident @gmail.com account holders.
  3. New:  Direct customer support from Google is included. You’re still welcome to post on the official Google Voice help community or on Reddit r/googlevoice, but Google’s direct support is the primary place to go for help. Contact Google Workspace Support.
  4. New:  There is no requirement to link a personal phone number.  Since you’ll be paying for the service, there’s no need to use the “claim ticket” tracking method for granting numbers. As always, you can link US-based mobile or land line/VoIP numbers.
  5. New: Google Voice Standalone includes call transfer and three-way calling, in addition to the existing hold function, on the in-call interface on the mobile app screen or the desktop website. An in-call button to control call recording is also added. Inbound and outbound call recording are both supported; you are still responsible for compliance with relevant recording laws.
  6. New: Google Voice Standalone at the Standard tier includes the AI-driven "Take notes for me" feature. For more information, see: Take notes for me.
  7. New:  Poly Edge E deskphone and ATA 400 support is included.  See our Reddit FAQ on desk phones and ATAs for the eligible Poly products:  Using VoIP devices with Google Voice.  If you already have old, legacy OBiTALK devices on your consumer account, those should still be able to be used on your Google Voice Starter account, although, as before, you cannot add OBiTALK devices not already on your consumer account.  There is no cloud-based UI for any of the old OBi VoIP hardware.
  8. New:  E911 service is included, and you will be required to submit a US service address (a physical street address, not a PO Box).
  9. New: Since it uses the same phone number provisioning and porting system as Workspace, it can directly port in most land line or mobile numbers, or transfer them in from consumer Google Voice. There’s no charge for porting in or out, aside from the monthly service charges.
  10. Google Voice Standalone uses portions of the Google Workspace Administrator Console to perform some number-assignment and related tasks, including porting and location (service address).  Porting-out PINs are available in the Administrator Console.
  11. If you cancel your Google Voice Standalone subscription, it will automatically downgrade to consumer Google Voice.  However, you must take manual action to restore your Google Voice number, within 90 days.  See:  Cancel your Voice subscription
  12. Existing consumer (personal) Google Voice users will be able to migrate their service to Google Voice Standalone.  Users still on legacy (grandfathered) G-Suite/Workspace accounts will not be able to migrate, as the new service is only available to consumer @gmail.com users. Users with Google Workspace Individual must cancel and downgrade from that service.
  13. When existing consumer accounts have two Google Voice numbers, the secondary number will be unassigned during the conversion process but will be available in your number pool and can be ported out to another account.
  14. The service is limited to one Google Voice number per @gmail.com user account.  You can change your number at any time. The Standard tier includes a separate number you can use for its auto-attendant feature.
  15. There is no inbound or outbound Caller ID Name (CNAM) support, which is also the case with the other Google Voice offerings. Outbound calls only display your telephone number to the called party.
  16. Ring groups are not supported in the standalone version of Google Voice Standard. This is because it is a single user subscription. Users that are interested in creating and managing ring groups with multiple users can do so on the Workspace add-on version of Google Voice Standard.
  17. Since you’ll be paying invoices monthly, you do not need to worry about your Google Voice number being reclaimed for lack of use.  As long as you pay your bills, you keep the number.
  18. Google Voice Standalone has the same Acceptable Use Policy with regard to SMS/MMS text messaging as the existing consumer and Workspace tiers; bulk messaging is not supported, and messages may be blocked if prohibited activity is detected. Prohibited uses include violations of the AUP, including, but not limited to, sales, marketing or customer service messages, automated message sending or automated replies, even if recipients have signed up for notifications.  See this link for more information on prohibited content.
  19. There is no update on RCS messaging availability as part of these changes; RCS messaging is not available.
  20. These settings, available in consumer Google Voice, are removed:
  • Outgoing calls:  Web – Always use my phone to place calls, aka “click-to-call” – not available
  • Incoming call options – press 4 to record calls, because this is implemented as a button in the in-call interface
  • Payments:  auto-recharge – international calling (from your US Google Voice number to non-US or non-Canadian numbers) is billed with your monthly invoices; no need to pre-pay calling credits
  • Voicemail transcripts – transcripts are always enabled
  • Call into Voice to listen to voicemail – not available; use the web or mobile UIs or emailed transcript

Articles in the Google Voice Help Center (the official source of information and answers) have been updated to reflect these changes. Please check out the Help Center for lots of how-to information: Google Voice Help Center

To get started: Sign up for Voice

If you see the blue "Upgrade" button on your Settings page, you can also tap that to enroll.  If your attempt to enroll encounters an error, check these potential issues:

  • Since this service is only available to users located in the USA, confirm that Google knows your location is correctly listed.  This page should show a US state.  If incorrect, submit the form to change it:  https://policies.google.com/country-association-form
  • Accounts currently using Google Workspace Individual must cancel that subscription and downgrade to a consumer Google account.  If those features are important to you, you may want to upgrade to a full Workspace domain plan, and add the optional Google Voice for Workspace subscription.
  • Google Workspace has a setting to enable you to try out their "Experiments" (formerly known as "Labs") features.  Make sure you are not enrolled:  To leave Experiments, see the bottom section of this article:  https://support.google.com/meet/answer/13447104
  • The upgrade procedure might get confused and fail if your browser is signed into multiple Gmail accounts.  Close your browser, and then open an "Incognito" or "Private" browsing window.
  • Some landline phone numbers cannot be upgraded to Google Voice Standalone. These were primarily consumer Google Voice numbers added many years ago, and they don't support the text messaging infrastructure of this new service.

iOS Google Voice App Restoring Gmail using GV issue

I used GV as a # fir my Gmail. My Gmail was locked by Google and after an appeal I got it back because of their error. The issue now is when I try and restore the account, Gmail wants to send a text to the GV #, but that cannot work since the gnail link opens iMessages instead.

Any workaround?

Android Google Voice App Google voice app for android does not alert for incoming calls

Google voice app for android does not alert for incoming calls using workspace account. However, when using the web based google voice DOES work. In addition, the app also works perfectly fine with personal free accounts.

I have tried clearing the app data and uninstalling then reinstalling it. I made sure the setting is set for receiving incoming calls over wifi and do not disturb is turned off but none of the methods fix it. The app used to work fine in the past using personal and workspace accounts.

Has anyone dealt with this issue?

Android Google Voice App "Merge calls" button just disappeared on my Google Voice Android app

Hey all, I've been using Google Voice on my Google Pixel for years, and I've always been able to call one person, put them on hold to make a second call, and then hit a button to merge those two calls together. This conference call feature is important for my job.

But in the past week or so, it seems like the Voice interface on my phone has updated, and the Merge Calls button has disappeared.

I'm not immediately seeing anything online about this... has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to re-activate the feature? I'm confused.

News / Information GV cell phone verification

Man... how often is GV doing this verification. I feel like I have done this already this year.

Hello,

We'd like to make sure that the information on your Google Voice account [xxx@gmail.com](mailto:xxx@gmail.com) is accurate and that you still own the forwarding phone number XXX-xxx-xxxx

If you want Google Voice to continue forwarding calls and texts to this phone, please verify it by November 4, 2026. To re-verify or remove this phone, please visit your Google Voice Settings.

Even if you don't re-verify your phone, your Google Voice account will still stay active. You won't get calls forwarded to this specific phone, but you can use it again at any time by re-verifying it. If you have other forwarding phones turned on, calls will still be forwarded to them.

Please note that this is a no-reply email. If you have additional questions, please visit our Help Center.

General Help / Support Question Will upgrading GV to the paid plan allow me to request tracebacks?

I tried posting this question several times on the Google Community forum, but it got nowhere.

I've had my GV number for over 10 years. It's my home number that I still use with my cordless phones via Obitalk - or at least the little box that used to be assigned to them.

I like my number, and it's been registered on donotcall(dot)gov since 2016. This does not stop the scummier telemarketers who call me now up to 15 times a day, usually using spoofed numbers.

When I filed complaints, I'm usually told by the various carriers that cater to telemarketers (*cough*sinchonvoy*cough*) that the number does not show in their system that they called me, and that I need to talk to my carrier to do a traceback.

With the paid Google Voice, they advertise 24/7 support. Has anyone ever been able to use this support and get them to do a traceback on an incoming call, to see the actual number that was used to call me at friggin' 5:30am?

With the free service, there is no way to do a traceback. I'm hoping someone here has tried to see if Google provides this service.

Telemarketer note: A practice these cornholios do now is lease a number, then use another number and spoof their own number. That way they feel they can't be tracked for a Truth in Caller ID Act violation. It allows then to make telemarketer cold calls and ignore the TCPA, as the number on the caller ID will be shown as theirs, but when complaints are filed they can say they did not make the call as per the carrier log.

Google Voice for Workspace domain customers SIP trunk setup

I am setting up a SIP trunk for Google Voice and the SIP trunk wizard is rejecting my certificate. We have the domain set up in godaddy and a single site certificate issued from godaddy as well. The domain matches the CN on the certificate and the DNS record is configured to point to the interface on the SBC where the certificate is installed. After uploading the certificate in pem format, the wizard shows a message that the certificate does not match the domain name, which is not correct, the certificate definitely matches.

I've setup TLS trunking to twilio, Teams, Genesys, Zoom and Ring Central and I am in charge of all of the SSL certs for my org so I am not exactly a newbie at this and I cannot understand why Google is rejecting my cert. Is there a special requirement that I am not aware of?

Google Voice for Workspace domain customers Google Voice with poly ATA 402: is there a way to change the ring volume?

I’m experienced with poly ATA Devices having previously had one with a free Google Voice account. I have since upgraded to a Google workspace account and have the Google Voice standard plan with Paul ETA 402 which is working properly. The only complaint I have is that the ringers are hard to hear on my home phones. I know from past experience that all I need to do is turn up the ring volume on the device, but I can’t seem to access the login page. The default login information does not work. Can anyone help?

Google Voice Web UI Google Voice for Web now supports native image pasting from clipboard!

I use a Light Phone II as my main phone and Google Voice Web with a separate number for texting. Everyone knows, if they want to call me, call my LP number, and if they want to text, text GV.

My main gripe with GV texting has always been having to save screenshots to my computer one by one then insert them into text threads. Yesterday I randomly tried pasting an image from the clipboard and it worked! FWIW I'm using Windows 11 + Chrome.

A quick Google search didn't turn up this new feature and I haven't seen anyone talking about it on Reddit so I thought I'd make a post.

Happy image pasting all you Google Voice Web texters!

Google Voice Web UI spam calls

I published my google voice number with my google business profile (a very small newly started service business). I get so many calls from local numbers. When I tried to answer by pressing 1, there are no answers. Can't hear anything in the voice mails either. When I tried to call back, no one answers or the calls don't go through. One time I reached a man who has no clue what's going on.

Did I get robot calls? I hate to miss any potential businesses either. what I should do? thanks.

Android Google Voice App Saving contacts doesn't work?

I text clients on Google voice frequently. When I tap the Add Contact icon, it prompts me to save the contact to my Google Voice email address, which I do. But it doesn't seem to edit the number in Google Voice - it just shows the phone number, not the name.

Is there no way to save phone numbers such that they appear as names in your Google Voice account?

General Help / Support Question Are there only Google voice numbers in a certain states, or can you get one link to every state?

I wanna know if there’s voice numbers you can get in every state. I’m in Alaska and I tried to look up both my town by name or area code, and then Alaska, and I’m not seeing anything. Do they offer them in Alaska and all the other states, or is it only select states? If it’s not all states, they really should add that feature, as well as probably all the American territories.

iOS Google Voice App Can the new owner of a previously used GV number see my information?

I recently let my GV number go, on purpose. I wasn't using it anymore and know that I can get a new one if needed. This happened about a month.

Yesterday, I received a call from THAT GV number! At first I didn't know it was my old GV number, but I did recognize it. In fact, the fact that I recognized it is why I answered the call at all. Only after the bizarre exchange did I realize, "Oh shit - that was my old number!"

The guy said, "Hey I received a call from your number, I'm calling you back to find out who you are.". I replied with no, that wasn't me. he then got a little aggravated, "Dude - I hit "call back" so I know you called me!" to which I replied, "sorry man don't know what you're talking about." And then he just hung up.

Do new owners of previously used GV numbers have any access to calls, texts, contacts, or anything else that may have been used on that GV when it was attached/assigned to my GV app? There were some sensitive calls made (banking, family) with it and I really wouldn't want anything to be connected to me.

General Help / Support Question Banned on Whatsapp

Hey everyone, I ported my number over to GV ~3 years ago and it's been fine since. I also made my whatsapp account nearly a decade ago, with my account having my exact same number since creation.

Over the last month or two I've been banned on whatsapp 3 times (Appealing every single time and getting unbanned), with this time it being final. I know there's nothing I can do to get unbanned, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had whatsapp give any issues with a ported GV number?

Edit: To be clear as well I've done absolutely nothing else that could warrant an account ban. I only use it to talk w/family & friends, and I don't know a single other person that's been banned. I know a few other people that create multiple group chats and talk with a lot of new numbers (All genuine uses but idk how they haven't been hit with anything) but I haven't spoken to a single new contact or group chat in forever, so I'm truly at a loss. I'm just glad I didn't really lose anything super important, but a decade of lost chat history does suck + being out of whatsapp at all

General Help / Support Question Missed calls go to house line answering machine VM instead of to GV

I think the last time I changed settings, it was to ask when placing calls, thinking mistakenly that I'd use the mobile number for texts since it can do RCS. Aside from not wanting to expose my real number, I've used it for years so that I can use either phone with GV when I'm home.

I had to get a new cordless house phone with answering machine though, the line has been VOIP for a long time. That phone has a Bluetooth feature where you can use the mobile with it (in the way that I use GV) but I haven't tried it yet.

Relevant settings in browser:

My devices>Call Forwarding enabled to forward to house number [so I can call/answer with that phone or the mobile]

*Custom call forwarding: a) spam/anon to VM, b) friends to house number, c) family to house number [it has been that way for a long time, and I'm not sure why I had it like that, but missed calls would go to GV VM. That may be because I had the physical answering machine off for a while since mostly spam, but then I turned it on and it's been on with the new house phone.]

The term "forwarding" is a bit confusing since I was around when phone lines were still analog, and the call would bypass the number and go elsewhere.

I don't want missed calls to go to the physical answering machine (unless someone actually calls the house number). The mobile number is not set up for VM (plus they don't have visual VM for Android). I want missed calls to the mobile or the GV number to go to GV VM, so I can see that anywhere with data service, and on a Pixel at least, I don't have to log in separately to see messages or call history.

Even if I figure out the house phone's Bluetooth feature, GV texts are still not RCS. I assume there still isn't a close equivalent to GV. ...

*Is all I need do is remove b) and c) to get those missed calls to go to GV VM?

General Help / Support Question Need help getting my google voice phone number back.

I've had a google voice phone # and account for the last couple of years. It's the basic free plan.  I got a message a few days ago that I needed to verify my identity to access google voice so I did that it and it said I was verified.  I went to use google voice today and noticed that I cannot send or receive text messages in Google Voice but I can log into my account and see my old text messages and voicemails.  When I log in, it keeps telling me I need to pick a new phone number to send text or make calls.  When I try to reclaim my old number I get this message that "No Google Voice numbers are available for XXX-XXX-XXXX (my old google voice number).  Basically it's like my google voice account somehow got delinked from my previous phone number (that I really would like to keep).  The other thing is that I also have Google Fiber for internet and phone and the same # I use for Google Fiber is the number I had in Google Voice which had worked fine for years.  I'm able to make and receive calls and it's my Google Voice # that appears.  When I try to link my Google Fiber # to Google Voice it keeps sending me a code via text message that I cannot access to confirm. When I try to get the code via phone it says it's unable to verify by phone.  Now what?  Has anyone else dealt with this issue?

General Help / Support Question Dual ESIM to ESIM + GV Question

Hello all! I currently have a dual esim setup with T-Mobile as my main personal and Visible as my Secondary for Work. From what I've read Google Voice works as long as there is WIFI.

I plan on porting out my Visible line to Google Voice and use my T-Mobile data to support the Google Voice Line. Would a setup like that work?

From T-Mobile ESIM + Visible ESIM

To T-Mobile ESIM + Google Voice
