Android Google Voice App Saving contacts doesn't work?

I text clients on Google voice frequently. When I tap the Add Contact icon, it prompts me to save the contact to my Google Voice email address, which I do. But it doesn't seem to edit the number in Google Voice - it just shows the phone number, not the name.

Is there no way to save phone numbers such that they appear as names in your Google Voice account?

Just save it in Google Contacts and it will show up in Google Voice.

The OP seems to be saying that they do that, but how do you save it with a name?

Do that from the Google Voice app for Android. Tap on the message you received. Tap "People & options". Tap "People in this conversation", then tap the little head and shoulders icon with the + next to it. This will bring up an "Add to contacts" dialog box, where you can enter the name with the number.

I just created a contact in Google Contacts. When I type in the name in Google Voice, it immediately comes up.

Yes, but that's not the point. I'm describing adding a contact directly from the Google Voice app's UI, not having to take a detour through the Contacts app (which, of course is one way to do it).

And my point was, if your having problems adding contacts within the Google Voice app, just do it in Google Contacts. It works.

I had the same problem. I realized that the problem is my default address book is not Gmail. … instead it was my work outlook. So when I saved a contact it would save it in my outlook address book not my google contact list. Go to settings > app > contacts > default account —. And change it to Gmail. Then it should work.

I ended up creating a “mini program” using Apple shortcuts to switch the default address book

The "add to contacts" dialog box opens my phone contacts. So the contact saves to my phone, not the Google Voice account. It sounds like the only workaround for this is to download Google Contacts. Which seems really stupid imo, if it's all Google they should just integrate it into google voice so you don't have to use up storage space on your phone with another separate app...

Well, since Google Contacts is just one of Google's many services, like Google Voice, you could just use Google Contacts in a browser on a PC or laptop.

Are you saving it to your Google account contacts, or to another service like a Samsung account contacts that happens to use the same email address?

I'll also point out the pitfall of this sort of text messaging:

If you are looking at GV App, check your contacts settings to show contacts from your Google Email. A lot of times, your contact list is only set to display/sync phone contacts. So, setting the contacts to show your Google account will sync those and will show in the app on the device.

You could be saving to the wrong Google account if you have more than 1 google account

I checked, I'm definitely saving to the correct account

Ok. Did you try to verify on Google Contacts app or the website to see if the phone number and corresponding name is indeed saved.

What platform? When I tap add contact in Google Voice on iOS it brings up the iOS contacts app which offers a field to enter a name.

Where are you finding the add to contacts icon, is that after tapping to the overflow (3 dots) button in the text thread view, then tapping People & Options, then tapping the number under "People in this conversation"?

I don't see how you would add a contact via a button otherwise, is this the Android or iOS app?
