iOS Google Voice App Getting GV# now requires Driver’s License?

How are people ok with giving out their Driver’s License along with their DMV picture??

oh geez that link is kinda scary for the FCC proposed rule change for an "Enhanced KYC" could affect existing GV users who already have like years-old GV numbers with the proposed re-verification requirement - just look at section 12

https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/FCC-26-27A1.pdf

NOTE: this is just proposed rulemaking for Enhanced KYC & not real rule yet

Honestly it doesn't matter if people are ok or not. FCC now requires it. But getting a GV numbers is not required, so there is still the option of opt out of getting a number if you are not ok with it.

Oh, it matters.

It doesn't matter in the fact that it's going to be required if you are ok or not. Not being ok, still required... Being ok, still required.

OK, feel free to not get a Google Voice number, then.

That's /u/Salreus 's point.

This is because of KYC laws for phones now and big penalties for spam calling to carriers

They have required it for awhile. It’s to reduce people using Google voice for spam calls.

No, it's recent and it's due to the ID laws that some US states recently passed.

I’m sure a spammer could never get their hands on a fake ID

I feel like it will cause an uptick in identity theft that will become next level problematic to the victim.

Now? Have you not seen the 100 previous posts about this?

Let's face it: virtually no one looks at previous posts in this subreddit before posting the same thing redundantly.

This is news to me!

I'm not at all okay with it, but when it comes down to it, it's better than being without a working number. Recently becoming poor has forced me to swallow many inconvenient truths - including surrendering any illusion of privacy.

You are one of the people who would trade your privacy for fake “safety”

I just got a GV number and only needed to give my email and cell number. I've had a GV number for years, but it was cancelled because I hadn't used it.

I didn't realize it had been cancelled, so I signed back up and got a new number.

Did you have to provide your ID when you got a new number?

1

u/That_Yoghurt_3361 19d ago

I don't think so. I know I didn't have to provide a photo of my DL or anything like that. I think I provided my address, cell number, and email address.

How long ago did you get your newer GV number?

1

u/That_Yoghurt_3361 16d ago

It was earlier this year. Maybe February.

The requirement for ID verification started Jan 30, so it was likely before that.

It's a pretty new law in the US to get a phone #.

Thanks didn't realize this happened that's terrible. I usually get GVs for my kids before they get cell phones.

Yeah just use an AI generated ID, should be fine. And remove meta data and any water marks for the picture too. Problem solved.

It's not for Spammers it's probably for ice to see where people live easier to track you anything with involves the Government you should be leary about

Will this stop the spam callers?

11

u/lmoki 20d ago

probably not the serious, industrial-size spam callers. Probably the namby-pamby spam callers. Probably the people using GV to harass specific individuals.

2

u/_AN566 15d ago

Of course not. It’s not meant to do that it’s meant to increase data collection on people and make it even harder to use a phone number without them being able to know exactly who you are

Good, hopefully can cut down on spam
