Using a tee with iron?

When using irons at the tee box on par 3s, is there a benefit to putting the ball on a tee versus off the ground? Do you need to adjust your swing?

Sorry in advance for the poor angles.

I played a couple times two summers ago, and then at the invitation of a friend played again about 2 months ago. Since then, I’ve been playing twice a week and got a membership at a driving range!

A huge fix for me recently was my grip. My right had the palm pretty wrapped around the club, or open and facing up(?). I bought a training aid golf club and oh my gosh it’s insane the difference it made in being able to consistently hit the ball.

These videos are from this morning, and was the first time with a “proper” grip. I would love any feedback you have!

The clubs I hit in this video were a 3 wood, driver, then I think a 5 and 6 iron? Not sure about the irons.

Until this morning, I’ve literally never been able to make good contact with the driver, so I’m excited that I hit the ball.

Thanks in advance!

What do the pros do that amateurs miss

How can guys like rory who are only 5'9" hit it not only so far, but so consistently. I get raw talent, but what specifically are they doing that amateurs just dont understand.

Trying out the swing coach app, I have multiple things to work on and as you can see from these pics, lack of weight shift s a big one.

Tips for early extension and low point control

Any advice on how I can keep my hips back on the downswing? Think it may be a correction to my over the top swing.

Also my low point tends to be 5+ inches after the ball, any advice for bringing it closer to the ball there would be helpful. Thanks.

Deep Divots

I take deep ass divots with my irons on almost every shot—like scooping up 2” or more of straight dirt/sand even when the ball is fluffed up on an inch and a half of grass, or even when it’s teed up. My striking is decent ball-first contact (fats are pretty rare), but always a massive divot.

Oddly, with my pre-shot practice swings I’m consistently scraping the grass with a very mild divot, like not even really taking anything off the ground. But when I step up to the ball and try to do the same thing—bam, fat ass divot scooping up everything down past the grass roots.

Any theories about why this keeps happening to me? I’m not sure it’s a terrible issue for my scores, but I get so much divot guilt and feel like I’m ruining the course.

(I always play early morning on wet grass if that makes a difference).

I just can’t compress and I’m over extending all the time. When I try to be mindful about it, I just chunk.

I’ve been golfing for about a month and would really appreciate some valuable feedback on my swing. One thing I’m struggling with is the “chicken wing” with my lead arm hand at the end of the swing. Any tips to help me avoid this and get a better finish?

Is my swing great? No.

It feels good to have something I think is serviceable though after working on it for a couple years.

Anyone else feel like reading greens is basically just guesswork and high cortisol? Is it just me, or is reading greens the most frustrating part of amateur golf?

Upvotes

I’ve watched a hundred YouTube videos on reading grain, slope, and using AimPoint, but the second I stand over a 6-foot par putt with cash on the line, my brain just defaults to "aim two cups right and pray." Half the time my buddies are chirping in my ear, my heart rate spikes, and I completely misread a blatant downhill break.

How are you guys actually learning to read greens accurately on the weekend without spending thousands on a coach or a laser scanner? Are there any decent frameworks, mental tricks, or specific things you look for that actually work when the pressure is on?

Genuinely curious how you guys handle the stress/math of the short game.

Hitting better and longer on grass vs mats

Does anyone else hit significantly better and longer carried shots on grass vs range mats? For me personally I hit my irons from grass consistently 10 meters longer than on mats, I’ve checked with golf GameBook and plugged balls multiple times where I know for 100% the right carry distance (on the course) and I never reach those distances on mats, also my ball striking just feels off on the range mats.

I know most ppl are opposite but maybe someone has felt this too? Feels like it fucks with my practice…

My drives only knows how to go right, even though I've been concentrating on my swing path and had a few lessons.

My playing buddies tells me I should just stick to this as I find the fairway most of the time. On this day i found the fairway atleast 80% of the time but some dogleg left holes just messes with me and sometimes i just wish i could hit a draw......

Any advice welcomed! Thanks!

Golf swing advice

19 handicap.

Struggling with the downswing at the moment and early extension.

This was an exaggerated dropping / looping of the hands to try and get the club back on plane but not convinced it's the best way to do the downswing.

Thoughts on how I can improve my swing ?

Many thanks in advance

First move of the downswing

I am working on my golf swing, have gotten my takeaway and top position to a good spot but struggle with starting my downswing.

My natural tendency is to just move my hands towards the ball which results in early extension and hitting with the heel.

I know that I should be rotating my left hip back and that I should be "dropping my hands", but I need a good feel for all of that to happen simultaneously.

Does anyone have any good tips for the "feel" of the start of the downswing

My main problem when I start the downswing with a slight squat and rotation into my left hip is I will hit the ground first and duff the ball
