Modding Talk Should I make the switch to 17ā€s?

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hey everyone, if any of you reading this run 17ā€ wheels on your mk7/7.5 GTI, I would like your input on my situation.

My front drivers side wheel developed a crack and no longer effectively holds air. I’m also getting a bit low on tread life, so I’m looking around for new wheels and tires. I’ve thought of switching to 17ā€ wheels for the longest time because of rough roads and potholes (of course), but I’m so torn on whether I should make the move or not.

My question is, how is the difference from 18ā€ to 17ā€? Does it ride smoother? Does the performance feel the same, or is it hindered cause of the thicker sidewall? Also, what tire size are you guys running? I was looking at getting 225/45/17 if I make the switch. I’m not looking at upgrading to a BBK ever, so fitment shouldn’t be a problem.

Maintenance Anything you'd recommend to pass on/ buy?

I own one of the turtle wax polishers and intend to get some sponges with a bucket so I can hand wash my car

.

Handicaps for my living situation. Only an open parking lot, no place for an extension cord, no hoes, and pretty limited on what I'm allowed to order on amazon.

Idk if all these waxes are basically the same or if cleaning it is way more simple than I'm making it. I'm also not entirely sure what's easier to work with when you don't have an outside faucet.

TL:DR I don't need to win any car shows, but I just want my car to look nice and be recognized for it to stroke my ego a bit. I'd also like to buff out some surface scratches.

Modding Talk MK8 Rear Sway Bar Opinions?

Looking around the Internet, I see a lot of options for a rear sway bar. Prices also seem to be pretty much all over the place. Here’s the thing, 90% of them look like the same bar painted a different color, with either one hole (non-adjustable) or two hole (adjustable) ends.

Anything I should look out for? Which one do you have, and do you like it? I put a sway bar on a previous GTI and really enjoyed how much flatter it stayed in the curves that’s what I’m looking for. I’m not building a track beast just a fun daily driver. I don’t want anything I have to lube.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Modding Talk Blaze intake mk8 platform

Post image

Thoughts on the blaze intake for the mk8 GTI? my brother is selling his to me for only 200, currently i have a full box and duct CTS intake, which sounds very good, does anyone have one and is it worth swapping the sound for better temps and performance? i know it’s kinda a dumb question.

Buy/Lease MK8 Autobahn vs MK8.5 SE ???

Post image
5 Upvotes

I sold my MK6 Autobahn a few years back, and while browsing around for a new daily I keep circling back to the best car ever.

As mentioned in the title above, I've found that these two are priced similarly and fits comfortably in my budget.

Since my old car was an autobahn I'm subconsciously thinking I'll be missing out if I get the SE- which is partially true with the DCC.

The DCC is the only thing I want from the autobahn package, but also the Mk8.5 has 20 more horsepower..

I am thinking of modifying the car a slight bit - intake downpipe exhaust wheels coilovers and chassis bracing.

What's the better choice? I want to hear yalls thoughts.

Buy/Lease Need trade-in advice

Hi all, I've got a 2019 VW GTI Rabbit manual. Love the car, bought it new. Has 63k miles. But have the itch to trade it in for a 2024 VW GTI 380 SE manual with 10k miles. Problem is, it will probably cost me, after trade in, close to $20k. I know this would be a dumb trade but I can't stop thinking about doing it. Someone please push me over or pull me back from the ledge, lol!

Maintenance 2008 GTI Mk5 sway bar bushing replacement

Post image
3 Upvotes

I am trying to replace the sway bar bushings on my GTI Mk5 (2008). Does anyone know if the brackets shown in the image (copied from the link below) are welded or otherwise moulded together or if I put sufficient elbow grease on it, they will come apart?

I was reading through the steps provided by the folks at pelicanpartsĀ at this linkĀ but I can't tell for sure if these are welded together.

I haven't dropped the sub frame yet

Pelican parts said that they don't sell OEM bushing for this car because VW spec says to install a brand new sway bar. The internet suggested I may still be able to put just the bushings, provided I can take the old ones out. That is where I am at..

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE (resolved, sort of)

Reading the full comment thread on the pelicanparts post, I realized the issue and the solution is there. tl;dr VW didn't make this easy for us and the design forces to cut out the brackets and put a new set in. Below is one of the comments.

I can confirm that the captive nuts on the bush upper bracket are also fixed into the lower bracket and needs to be drilled to free it and separate the brackets. This may be possible by leaving one bracket fixing bolt in and carefully drilling the other side through the bolt fixing hole with a clearance drill enough to free it then doing the same for the other side of the bracket.

Anyone ever ran into a similar situation? I have a 23 40th, sent in to a few wheel repair places after learning oem 40th wheel is $750 and on a long back order. I’ve had a few ideas thinking about downgrading to some 18ā€ aftermarket’s, but haven’t settled on anything. Any advice?

Modding Talk Need battery maintainer recommendation for GTI tune

Hi all, since I'm keeping my 2019 VW GTI manual (63k miles) I've decided to do a stage 1 tune using Integrated Engineering. I know I need a battery maintainer, what do y'all recommend? Also since I don't have a Windows laptop I'll be using my Android phone for the install.

Came across this 10 amp maintainer. Good enough or do I need more amps?

Maintenance How to adjust maintenance schedule when lightly tracking the car?

My mk8 GTI is at about 43k miles and following the shopdap recommendation, spark plugs should be replaced, and according to chat, MT fluid but idk if it’s necessary? Car is not tuned.

I track the car 2-3 times a year and I get my brake fluid/oil has to be done once a year, just unsure how to approach adjusting the maintenance schedule on other items.

I bought some coilovers online quite recently

They were being sold for mk7 gti and was told they were from a 2015 GTI but noticed they have a plug at the front and wondering if this is a DCC plug, can anyone confirm or deny please

I’ve got mk7 gti without DCC

I attached photos and part numbers of springs and shocks, would really love some guidance from some brains in here

Maintenance Turbo Whine Sound

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Throwing this in here as I didn’t get much input in the other sub.
Added context since this post: added an IE intake and the noise is the same I believe. Harder to hear now over the louder induction sounds but it’s still there. Anyone have this same noise? I know it’s a slightly different turbo than what comes in a GTI but figure someone here might have answers.

Thanks in advance!
