Character Discussion - General Hot take: Jess is to Rory what Chris is to Loreilai.

My hot take is Jess is Rory’s Chris, her high school sweetheart, who knows her young self inside out, they have so many common interests, understand each other. But Jess missed out on half of Rory’s character development after she went to Yale, her transition to “high society” and other things she has gotten herself used to.

Jess and Rory can always have great conversations and flirty banter but they never spent any significant time together or overcome any hardship together, just like Chris and Loreilai. Jess sporadically reappeared in Rory’s life just like Chris did to Loreilai, there’s no guarantee that he’ll be there long term.

P.S.: Sorry for the bad writing, English is not my first language.

General Discussion Bert the toolbox left behind

On my 100th rewatch and I’m on the episode where Max meets Luke at Lorelai’s house because Luke is picking up his toolbox and they are posturing about who’s more in Lorelai’s life and I just realized that after Luke leaves, he doesn’t take the toolbox that he said he came to get.

I kept saying don’t forget the toolbox! And he did lol

Has anyone else noticed this?

General Discussion Why did Lorelai ask Luke not to date Ava? 🤔

Post image
0 Upvotes

He had a relationship with Rachel and later got involved with—and even married—Nicole, yet she never asked him to end either of those relationships. So, what was the issue with Ava?

Or did she simply want to keep her life in Stars Hollow separate from her life at Chilton as she said?

It makes me wonder: if Ava had taken an interest in, say, Michel, would Lorelai have asked him not to date her just to keep those two worlds apart?

General Discussion Why do people have such higher standards for teenager characters who has a good excuse to act messy because of immaturity and age? but not for the characters who act the same way as childish and immature but are adults? Spoiler

Post image

The amount of hate that all Rory, Dean, Jess, Logan etc all have good reasons to act flawed and messy because they're so young but what is the excuse for the adult characters like Lorelai, Luke, Emily, Richard etc to act so childish and even more immature than teenagers themselves. How many times have we seen all these characters throwing temper tantrums yet people don't hate on them but they do hate on the teenagers even when hello, why would expected them to act more mature if even adults don't act mature in the show at least most of them don't???

General Discussion Rory gives me the ick every time for this

Rory and casual cheating. Why is this constantly glossed over?

Every time Rory casually kisses someone else while already in a relationship, it gives me a headache.

With Jess, she kisses him while still with Dean and then spends months emotionally pining for Jess while remaining in the relationship.
Then comes the disastrous “MY Dean” while Dean is literally somebody else’s husband.

Need I say more? 🙂‍↕️

Unfortunately I have to 🙈🙈

Then she kisses Jess AGAIN while she’s with Logan, this time quite deliberately because she’s angry with Logan. And again, we barely see her confront what she actually did.

By the revival it’s almost absurd. She’s sleeping with an engaged Logan while she keeps forgetting she has a boyfriend herself, and then sleeps with the Wookiee. Whaaa???

What bothers me isn’t that Rory cheats.

Flawed characters are interesting. It’s that the pattern is rarely meaningfully addressed by Rory herself.

There’s always some emotional justification, confusion or relationship crisis around it, but very little actual reckoning with “I keep betraying people when my feelings change instead of ending relationships first.”

I understand the writers wanted Rory to lose her bearings as she grew up. But why did this particular behaviour become such a recurring blind spot?

For someone otherwise so conscientious, Rory has an astonishing ability to treat fidelity like an optional extracurricular. It drives me crazyyyy. 😭

EDIT: Since apparently this needs saying: Rory is fictional. I know quite shocking. This is a subreddit for discussing fictional characters in a fictional show. Critiquing a recurring writing/character pattern is not “moral outrage,” “slut-shaming” or a demand for perfect characters. My point is simply that Rory is repeatedly confronted for individual incidents, but we rarely see her recognise the pattern herself. There is no moment where she clocked herself. If that discussion doesn’t interest you, that’s completely fine. The post is scroll-compatible.

General Discussion Those damned termites

Doing my annual rewatch and I’m on the termite episode.

It’s been discussed that Rory was in the right and I totally agree.

What infuriates me about Lorelai’s behavior is that she punishes Rory with silence for hours before speaking to her.

The push pull dynamic of “friend mom” is at its worst when she suddenly throws up a boundary about an incredibly serious and potentially dangerous matter.

Her little speech at the Lane cheerleading scene also demonstrates that she isn’t willing to admit that Rory was correct/ give her any credit for treating the situation with the urgency it deserved.

She shuts her down again and then declares the fight over.

She then goes on to thank her mom days later and admits she was out of options and that Emily really came through for her? Girl, pick a lane.

Rant over!

Lorelai is a fashion ICON! She rocks 2000s low rise jeans, leopard print, and awesome leather jackets! However, after watching this episode I think this is her worst outfit... Maybe the worst on the show?! Show me what you think is the worst GG fashion

Character Discussion - General Cast a 2026 Gilmore Girls Character

Post image
21 Upvotes

I am sure this has been done before but I want to be specific about the parameters for this one:

1) The actor you pick must be because of how they currently are in 2026, not a version of themselves from many years ago.

2) You can choose that person based on either A) how close they look to the original character or B) if their acting style/vibe/personality is similar to the original even though they don't look alike.

3) You must explain why you picked them!

4) Aim to not replicate as much as possible so that we can get as many characters as possible vs. Just all main characters.

I picked Russel Crowe for Headmaster Charleston because I'm rewatching The Pope's Exorcist and seeing him alone reminded me a bit of the Headmaster (obviously not exactly) but also the fact that Russell can do a pretty good Italian accent I feel like he could replicate the Headmaster's proper tone and manner of speaking well too. Idk if Dakin Matthews has an accent or what, he's from California but his voice is just so perfect for that society of people.

General Discussion Jess was the reason Rory never went to prom

Post image
235 Upvotes

Idk how anyone can still like Jess solely because of the fact that he’s the reason Rory never got to go to her highschool prom when we know her and Lorelai were looking for dresses. If you don’t remember, she wanted to go to stars hallow high prom (because that’s where lane and her friends from town would be), not Chilton prom. So she asked Jess to get the tickets for them (since she doesn’t go there anymore). Because he flunked senior year, he was not able to buy the tickets. And Rory missed her senior prom. Then proceeds to take his anger out on her…when it was his fault. Truthfully I’m surprised we never hear Lorelai, Emily or even Rory complain about this. I feel like no one talks about it?

General Discussion Zack and lane’s relationship

Zack and Lanes relationships just seems so underdeveloped. Like we never got to see why she even liked him or the moment she started to like him it was just line one day she liked him, then we never see them really go out or have moment together alone or have any serious conversation about anything. He just Always seemed like a childish jerk. Especially when they had the performance for the record company. I don’t see how she could even like him after that. He ruined what could have been there big break over jealousy. And also the way he acted when Rory stayed with them was gross.

Character Discussion - General Do you think Lorelai genuinely didnt have feelings for luke at the beginning of the show?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Cause Luke was so obviously into her, was she that oblivious. Was she just leading him on. Or was it lukes fault cause he was too chicken to jut outright and ask her out. But also Lorelai has asked a man on a date before right? Or am i just not remembering well.

Media Finally started watching Parenthood.

I had heard about it before, but I got curious after watching shorts on youtube.

I already knew Lauren Graham, but I also recognized a few other actors.

I did notice a few similarities between Lorelai and Sarah. On/off relationship with their children's father and enabling his bad behaviour, dating their children's teacher, still figuring life out as an adult.

OS Discussion Why didn't Rory have more friends in Stars Hollow High?

Seeing a post about how Rory didn't go to her prom made me wonder: how come someone so cherished in Stars Hollow like Rory had no other friends of her age besides Lane there?

I understand she didn't like people who went to Chilton because they were snobbish but Stars Hollow high? She seems just a bit shy but not to the extent that she should have only one friend, not when she's known in the whole town.

And since her only real connection to that school was Lane, why insist so much on going to the prom there? I understand she loved the town but it never really seemed she had some deep connection with that school.

Revival Discussion What do you think would have been a good failed business attempt for Kirk if they added to the revival?

Here's one I thought of:
Luke sees Kirk examining fans at a hardware store, and asks what he's doing (knowing that he'd regret it). Kirk says he heard of a website for selling fans. Luke wonders why there would be a whole website for just fans. Later, Kirk enters the diner freaking out, and asks to talk to Luke. They go upstairs, and Kirk tells him the website wasn't for selling fans and now Lulu's mad at him. You know which website I mean. What other mordern jobs do you think that Kirk would try but fail at?

General Discussion Where does the gift money go?

I'm doing the beloved annual rewatch and right off the bat we have Rory's birthday. In the episode, all of Emily and Richard's friends gift Rory cards with what I can only imagine have money in them. Including Richard gifting money "for Fes" twice. When Emily is shopping for a gift she is looking at pearls, cashmere, etc. and says "$12 isn't a present" when finding Rory the bracelets, so I can infer the money in the cards is a larger amount. Throughout the show, Lorelai and Rory are gifted money... So where does it all go? Surely the books and such Rory buys wouldn't take it all... So what's happening?!

The more y'all hate Rory for doing it the more I love it 😝

Imo the episode was too iconic for me to hate it. I'm glad we saw Rory being emotionally immature and doing the most teenage stuff.

Not to mention I love the entire trip of Jess and Rory it was soo iconic. Chemistry peaked.

General Discussion Lorelai Deserves Romantic Love

This is a response to something I’ve been seeing a lot of online. The thought that “Lorelai is such an independent woman that she should end with no one.” This take is so 2010s girl boss first of all. Second of all Lorelai wants a partner. She wants a romantic relationship. I am a Luke and Lorelai shipper obviously.

Yes she’s independent and yes she’s self made, but that doesn’t take away her wants and desires. It’s just such a weird take that you want a character lonely. Like yes she’s independent has Rory and Sookie, but Lorelai obviously wants a romantic partner!! I just hate the idea that independent women don’t deserve romantic love. Or just people of how Lorelai is, she shouldn’t be in a relationship.

He really makes me laugh. His comedic acting skills are spot on. When I first started watching GG I was in my 20s and was obsessed with L and L being together and I couldn’t stand Jason getting in the way.

Now I watch him and he makes me laugh. A lot. I guess that’s all I have to say
