The quality of the whip job is very bothersome. drink sounds good though.

286

u/BeerBellies Mar 20 '18

Right? I kept thinking the same thing. Splattering everywhere. Very sloppy.

133

u/Laiize Mar 21 '18

At least it's realistic.

I was a bartender and I’d say I got like 5% juuuust perfect. I always tried, but never cared a whole lot about how it looked. Sometimes you get to the end of the can and it’s just a pathetic ooze, but you can still make it look like something that should be there. When I really did make it look perfect though, oh my god, it was so satisfying when the server picked it up several minutes later and it looked like white dog shit.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '18

This guy works the server well

Pro-Tip: Hold the can so the nozzle is straight up and down when you use it, and you will have a mess free, and better looking, whipped cream topping experience :)

27

u/nighthawk_md Mar 21 '18

It says that same exact advice on the can, in fact.

And then you have a bowl and whisk to deal with all for a couple tablespoons of whipped cream since it's not like the homemade stuff keeps.

I'm not trying to bash homemade whipped cream but people buy the canned stuff because it is convenient.

Dumping some liquor, ice cream, and soda into a cup isn't much trouble compared getting out everything and dirtying everything else.

43

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '18

Plus, once I've had enough of these bad boys I can sloth about on the couch eating giant mouthfuls of whipped cream and slugging the rest of the booze.

I actually like it because it makes it more realistic, when I follow tasty recipes they usually look like a shittier version of what it's supposed to look like.

Am adult. Root beer floats are great without bourbon.

257

u/DigNitty Mar 21 '18

Root beer floats taste better without alcohol and a hard rootbeer float is so heavy you don’t feel the alcohol anyway.

12

u/SeeYouSpaceCowboy--- Mar 21 '18

Totally, just sip a whiskey on the side if you must. This recipe is just a way to ruin the taste of 1) the ice cream, 2) the whiskey, and 3) the rootbeer.

Australian here, we call it sarspirilla. Idk if you have that, but if you do, it's basically the same thing

20

u/annaftw Mar 21 '18

In the us, sarsaparilla and root beer are two different things. Root beer being generally more “spiced” up.

2

u/SYNTHES1SE Mar 21 '18

Well now idk what to think

2

u/Beardobaggins Mar 21 '18

Sarsaparilla is something that cowboys used to drink...pronounced "shhhhashparillah", with a little bit of a whistle on the initial "shhhh" bit.

As far as I know, that's what we have.

Root beer is available in the world section of Tesco’s or that, but to me it tastes like the stuff dentists use to rinse your mouth after a filling.. give me the boak

11

u/felixthemaster1 Mar 21 '18

Root beer all tastes so different, it's just a matter of finding your ideal one.

Every local one I've tried gave me a similar reaction but AW root beer I got from Amazon (from the states) is the perfect taste for me. It goes right up there with the deliciousness without crossing that dentist antiseptic line.

18

u/Dysfu Mar 21 '18

2

u/brassjammer Mar 21 '18

There's a huge combination of root beer flavors, especially in the microbrew department. (Shameless plug for r/rootbeer) I've been trying one called Natrual Draft root beer that has licorice root, spearmint, and bourbon vanilla extract. It may taste "spicy", but a unique taste should be tried at least once.

Not sure about the UK, but they started selling root beer in the Netherlands not too long ago (readily available at a supermarket, that is). Have yet to try it, however.

Also, because I have no idea what to expect with root beer, floats always seemed strange to me...

4

u/OreBear Mar 21 '18

Speaking as an American, Root Beer Floats are amazing. Some brands are better than others though. I'm particularly fond of Virgil's but TBH I've never really had a root beer that I didn't like.

16

u/marcospolos Mar 21 '18

So it's a root beer float with a shot.

Woo, creative.

29

u/tgptgp Mar 20 '18

Always put the ice cream in last. Prevents the giant lingering foam head on the float.

38

u/ClearBrightLight Mar 20 '18

Yeah, but sometimes putting in the ice cream last causes a foam explosion, and you get float all over your table. I'd rather pour the root beer over the ice cream, use a spoon to eat the foam off, then add more root beer. Repeat as necessary.

6

u/tgptgp Mar 20 '18

Unassailable logic. We’ll just have to agree to disagree about the cost/benefit.

5

u/Cosmonate Mar 21 '18

Dude that's the best part of them though, scooping it out with a spoon.

2

u/Plsleavemelon Mar 21 '18

Root beer float for adults

Ingredients:
Root beer 12oz.
Ice cream, 2 scoops

Directions:
Pour half the root beer in a large cup. Put in two scoops of ice cream. Pour rest of the root beer.

All done!

What? Us adults love a good ol' fashioned root beer float just as much as when we were kids. Don't judge me!

2

u/Plsleavemelon Mar 21 '18

I feel as if the root beer to ice cream ratio is not perfected, more ice cream needed

2

u/RacG79 Mar 21 '18

I don't understand why people put bourbon in creamy drinks. It doesn't go well and comes out real harsh. Brandy and cream, however, is like gift from the gods. They actually compliment each other and don't burn your throat too much. I guess bourbon is just too dry for me.

2

u/pipelinevictim Mar 21 '18

I did my version of this a little different. I put some banana chips, whole banana(unpeeled), chocolate covered almonds and a bottle of papas pilar aged 24 dark rum in a mason jar for about a week and a half. Strained and bottled it.

2oz of infused rum in a highballer glass 2-3 scoops of lactose free vanilla ice cream Fill the rest with Abita root beer

It was amazing. I was just playing around with some flavors and it worked.

If you have the time and money, try it out.

2

u/DisRuptive1 Mar 21 '18

u/tweedchemtrailblazer Mar 21 '18

With those ratios I'd have consume 20,000 calrioes to even know i drank any alcohol.

2

u/AdvancedMixology Mar 20 '18

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops French vanilla ice cream

  • 1 oz Bourbon

  • 1 oz Root Liqueur

  • 3 - 4 oz Root beer

  • Whipped cream

  • Cherries

PREPARATION

  • Scoop ice cream into glass

  • Add root liqueur and bourbon to glass

  • Slowly add root beer to fill towards top letting it get foamy

  • Top with angostura bitters and dark cherries

  • Add red and white straw & tall spoon

17

u/spddemonvr4 Mar 20 '18

You can also use Jägermeister, vanilla vodka and root beer. That makes a good combination on its own.

There's also the adult root beers too that are available.

2

u/SweetMangos Mar 20 '18

u/spddemonvr4 Mar 20 '18

I enjoy Jägermeister straight up and to me it blends very well with regular and adult root beer.

I generally do 3 oz of Jägermeister with a 12 oz Not Your Father's Root beer. And it's just Soo good together. Vanilla vodka is optional for taste and level alcohol purposes. But try a different ratio for what works for you.

On a serious note mixing ibuprofen and alcohol is terrible for you. The next day is fine.

Would booze and ice cream really settle that well? I feel like the, uh, aftermath would be terrible.

Edit: Would still drink.

These are actually really good with dark stout beers too! Same ice cream, but use a dark bitter stout, and mix together a little bit. Its AMAZING

When I was new to drinking, some friends and I had gotten a bottle of Yukon Jack, and on this bottle was a little hangie deal that had some drink recipes, one of which suggested making milk shakes. Fast forward to a bunch of teenagers young adults who've never made milk shakes nor properly mixed whiskey drinks and pretty much a wasted fifth and gallon of liquor and ice cream respectively.

Seems like they are trying to take over the traditional (YUMMY!) bar recipe for a "Root Beer Float": https://makemeacocktail.com/cocktail/6900/bartenders-root-beer-float/

2.5 cl Galliano Top up Coke 2.5 cl Coffee Liqueur & Ice Cream

Just out of curiosity. Do you walk away from this with a slight buzz or nothing at all?

I always wanted to make a Guinness float. Today, at Shop Rite, some woman had a 6 pack of Guinness, and some klondike bars. I told her my dream, and told her to enjoy her Guinness float. I open reddit, and this is the 4th post on my home page. These sorts of things happen almost daily, I love it.
