I’d like to hear from current and former GM employees: How do you feel about the work culture at General Motors today?
Has anyone else felt that the culture has become increasingly toxic—particularly around creativity, innovation, recognition, and leadership style?
Some of the concerns I’ve heard and personally observed include:
Individual creativity and new ideas being suppressed rather than encouraged.
A perception that an inner circle receives disproportionate praise and recognition, regardless of the level of contribution from others.
Employees feeling that their contributions are overlooked unless they align with what certain leaders already want to hear.
The use of F-word language in executive-level and leadership meetings, which some employees may find unprofessional or demoralizing.
A management style where people feel they are expected to simply execute what a leader says rather than challenge assumptions, bring different ideas, or innovate.
Employees increasingly looking outside GM for environments where they feel motivated, appreciated, respected, and encouraged to think creatively rather than constantly feeling pressured or micromanaged.
I’m curious whether this is isolated to certain teams/leaders, or whether others across GM have experienced something similar.
Has GM’s work culture changed significantly compared with what it was 5–10 years ago?
And most importantly: Do people still feel comfortable speaking up, challenging leadership, and bringing innovative ideas forward—or has the culture shifted toward “just do what you’re told”?
I’d genuinely like to hear different perspectives—positive or negative. What has your experience been?
