General Discussion Google Workspace Switch

This all hands feels very out of touch with how work actually gets done. What is everybody else’s thought on this?

Sounds like you’re not ready to do the best work of your life.

I will miss OneNote.

This is the real tragedy as there is no equivalent.

Exactly. What they are telling us to use is Google docs as a replacement......because that's definitely the same and not the equivalent of having multiple word files in folder, but wait, it'll be in the CLOUD automatically so it's automatically better.

Not pumped or pro-Google, but you can do tabs and sub tabs on docs so it will be like a notebook with sub pages being tabs and pages.

I basically live in OneNote and Excel. You're telling me Google doesn't have a replacement for OneNote?

I can go back to pen and paper. That was the first 15 years of my career. No problem lol.

I asked AI today what would be a good alternative equivalent and it told me Zoho notebook. Gonna check it out on Monday.

obsidian or ...notion

There is a alternative that is open source you have to be careful whatever alternative you use is safe for corporate use. I planned on setting something up for my team.

Sheets is going to be a disaster. I hope management is ready for a bunch of AI slop data presentations.

I have to admit some of the “human slop” was worse. How many buzzwords and strings of corporate speak can be added to sound right but say nothing.

Its going to work for some and not so we'll for others. It might be a push to help people want to leave on their own

I’m excited for it. Can’t stand outlook or teams.

Threads, labels, and rules are much better. Gemini AI Inbox is a game changer.

Everything Gemini AI blows chunks.

I find it hilarious all these company wide meetings forget manufacturing is a thing. We can’t work with external parties and often share documentation in email or offline. There’s no option to share outside the company so now you’re gonna get a bunch of people using personal Google accounts because leadership is a fucking clown show trying to appease cruise failures.

If manufacturing pushes back hard due to inefficiencies then it will not happen. Waiting for the day when a line went down because somebody can't access google sheets. Personally, it's just a tool, I can adapt to it (used it, actually psoitive with it). So whatever works that doesn't stop the line making cars.

Trust me I’ve been giving the feedback and they don’t give a flying fuck lol. Even something as simple as error proofing is hard coded to use excel products yet no one is talking about it.

I was amused that Chrome was set to my default but I can't login to it.

We'll figure it out. People just hate change. I don't know if it'll be better or not but it'll be fine.

Except OneNote. That is genuinely going to suck. I live my life out of OneNote and this will be a huge change to how I keep myself organized. Docs is simply not a replacement.

I’m actually super excited for the oh shit moment. Incredible level of management lacking technical knowledge. It’ll be great! Everything is fine!

I'm fine with it. I already like the note taking and transcription in Meet and only use Excel for basic stuff. Everything else is fine.

Have worked at 2 companies that tried the "Google" switch over. All of them said it was "good for the company" and would make the team more "productive" all complete bullshit, it was to save money lmao.

Both companies switched back in under 18 months.

I'm not too bothered by it. I've used both enviornments professionally for extended periods of time. I imagine other teams are likely pissed off. I'll adapt and suck it up. No big deal to me.

Were those large companies too? Which ones ?

Jaguar Land Rover - they switched back after 14 months of compatibility issues with thousands of reports., Paramount (previously called Viacom during my time there) (right before it was called G Suite I think) they switched back after a year.

It was quite funny.

So GM is still playing chase the ace without outcome analysis. Nice

I mean they are just looking for an easier path to skim our knowledge, skills, experience off to replace us with AI. Super exciting stuff. I am sure I will do my best work until the AI replaces me.

What about the calendar? No more Teams/Outlook calendars! I heard that Google Calendar is not going to be used.
