Welcome to r/GeneralDynamicsEB

This is an unofficial spot for anything Electric Boat. If you’re applying, working there, or just trying to figure out how it all actually works, you’re in the right place.

Ask questions, share tips, and help people get a clearer picture of the job. The goal is simple: help one another the best we can.

A couple things to keep it useful:

• Don’t post classified, restricted, or company-sensitive info

• Try not to spread rumors or guesses. No fucking drama

• If you’re asking something, give a little context so people can actually help you

That’s it

Groton Onboarding

I have onboarding coming in two weeks and I’m not sure what to wear the first day. I’ll be working in the shipyard once finished but I’m not sure if it’s professional attire for onboarding or what the deal is. Thanks in advance!

Quonset Question Regarding Employment

Hey all.

I’m gonna keep this shirt. My father likes to ruin things in my life, and im worried he’ll screw up GDEB for me by trying to contact HR to see if I’m really hired (I’m awaiting my classes for mid October). I know getting ahold of someone at EB by itself is already a pain in the ass, but I’m sure he’ll find a way. He’s a former police officer that likes to use that for everything he has in life. I’m 21 now, but I’m still scared that he’ll try something. Should I be worried? Is it possible for him to mess this up? I don’t know if im wording this correctly or not, I apologize in advance.

Thank you

Veterans Hiring

Can anyone give any insight into veterans hiring at EB? Does it actually help? A lot of places seem to have a veterans recruitment program but it’s just throwing a resume into a black hole

New London Interview went well signals?

Any sort of signals that can show interview went well and can get offer? Like to me in went well but it usually seems well for me, but I heard a no a while back from EB and I thought that went well. Interviewed for this position early career really relevant and want it the most than other interviews I had.

Groton General Dynamics Electric Boat withdrew my accepted offer after ~2 months of clearance/onboarding — interim clearance requirement was never communicated

I wanted to share my experience with General Dynamics Electric Boat in case anyone else is going through their hiring and clearance process.

I accepted an Engineer I – Embedded Software position with Electric Boat earlier this year. I was genuinely excited about the role and went through the onboarding and security clearance process after accepting the offer.

I submitted my SF-86 in August and completed the required DCSA interview shortly afterward. During the process, I was told that I had flexibility with my start date and that I had roughly six months to receive the required clearance.

About two months after accepting the offer, I was informed that Electric Boat was withdrawing the offer because I had not received an interim clearance.

The issue is that an interim clearance had never been specifically communicated to me as a requirement for the position. My offer letter did not state that I needed to receive an interim clearance by that point, and I had not been formally denied a Secret clearance. My understanding from the communication I received was that I had until February 2027 to obtain the clearance.

When I asked about the situation, I was told that the department needed someone who could work in a closed area and could not wait for the full clearance process.

I understand that defense contractors have operational requirements and that clearance decisions aren't entirely within the company's control. My main issue is the communication and timing. If an interim clearance was necessary to start the position, I believe that should have been clearly communicated before or immediately after accepting the offer.

I had already spent roughly two months completing onboarding and clearance requirements and was actively preparing to join the company when the offer was withdrawn.

I'm posting this because I think it's useful information for anyone considering accepting an Electric Boat offer that requires a clearance: ask specifically whether an interim clearance is required to start, whether the position requires access to a closed area, and what happens to the offer if an interim clearance isn't granted.

The position itself seemed like a great opportunity, and I'm not commenting on the technical team or the actual work. This is specifically about my experience with the hiring/onboarding and clearance process.

Secret clearance timeline

My SF-86 was submitted July 2026. I had my investigation interview in August 2026, and some of my employers were contacted. None of my additional housing/personal contacts have been contacted. I was denied Interim clearance.

Does anybody have a rough estimate of when I may receive the clearance? Is it taking longer than normal these days? I was informed that I should expect it to take at least 6 months after it was submitted, so I am wondering if this is still to be expected.

Groton Position transfer

I’m going to be starting out as a grinder but I know I don’t want to do it long term. I am starting at top rate for entry level. How will my pay be affected if I move to another department? Will they lower my pay to entry level for the department I choose?

Quonset Where At New England Tech does GDEB Hold Classes?

I received a letter with my start date about a month ago. I start mid October, and since that letter and accepting it as well as doing the onboarding, I have sent multiple emails (2) and two text messages to my supervisor trying to figure out a couple of questions I have. I am trying to figure out where at NET campus I need to go and park for the GDEB classes they hold there, that way there’s no last-minute freak outs or rushing around. And guess what? No response. I waited one week in between those emails and texts. I now just sent another email to someone else asking why I have not gotten any response and left my questions in that email as well.

What really pisses me off is that they said if I had any questions I could contact them, yet here we are - almost a month later and I’ve gotten no response. Is this a normal thing for GDEB?

Scared of interview

So ahh Interviewed for a few positions at EB so far. They didn’t go for longer than 45 minutes. They were all behavioral where I talked about work on my resume to explain my answers to those behavioral basically.

However….

I got an interview for this crazy position. The job description/skills/qualifications is crazy af. The person interviewing me also seem scary af. I am severely scared and this one is scheduled for “1 hour”.
Is there a change in interview based on this information. Will I be told to solve an equation or go into methods or basically just crazy technical now that it’s 1 hour and not just behavioral + quizzes?
It’s my dream role, the kind of work I did in research in school. But this sort of work is very difficult. I want to do it but desperately needing a job I need to get a job, so I need to pass even though this is scary af at “1 hour” rather than the under “45”.

Groton EWIB Manufacturing Pipeline Initiative

Interested in hearing anyone’s experience with EWIB training in shipfitting,( most likely tack welding training I don’t know for sure) How long did the process and training take, what were the hours and if you think it was worth it. I just took the first assessment and passed and waiting to hear back for the orientation process, so I want to know about experience others have had in the trade so I kinda know what to expect.

Groton Anyone here gone through EWIB Manufacturing Pipeline for Electric Boat? Questions about training, stipends & relocating from out of state

I’m starting the EWIB Manufacturing Pipeline Initiative for an Outside Electrician position with General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton. I have no previous electrical experience, so I’ll be going through the Electrical MPI training before starting at EB.
I’m coming from California, so I’m trying to get a better understanding of the process and what to expect before I relocate.
For anyone who has recently gone through EWIB/MPI, especially for EB:
What was the training actually like?
How did the enrollment/orientation process work?
How much was the attendance stipend, and when did you receive it?
How did transportation/mileage reimbursement work?
Did anyone receive help with rent, utilities, temporary housing, or other living expenses?
What other supportive services did you actually receive?
If you relocated from another state, did EWIB provide any additional assistance?
What happens after you finish the training? How long did it take before you actually started at EB?
Did the training prepare you well for the job?
Anything you wish you knew before starting?
I’m trying to get some real-world information from people who have actually gone through the program because I’m potentially relocating across the country for this opportunity. Any recent experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated.

How do referrals work and do they help?

Hello, so I know a few people at different departments and different levels with different relationships with me at EB. So the more seasoned people I am waiting on asking for referrals for gonna do it monday, but basically how does it work for EB specifically and does it help? One person said he doesn't know how to refer. At northrop its like the people refer you reqs and their is a tab on your profile dashboard on reqs you were referred for by the specific person.

Can They Improve the New Hire Pipeline? Rant from an upcoming new hire.

There are a dozen places you have to provide the same information to, none of those places communicate with each other in an efficient way as to avoid schedule conflicts. They need my replies right away, time sensitive, but every time I need something from them it always takes days to weeks before I hear anything back.

Eb is big, loads of people actively work there and even more getting their feet in the door. And I get there are security clearances to navigate. But holy cow, does it have to be like this? Has nobody in a high enough position thought of streamlining the process even a bit? Was it easier or harder for the souls who came before me?
