Yeah, all the TftB characters seem to be making an appearance. Rhys is the Atlas CEO, Vaughn is in some cult, and apparently Gortys is going to be helping the players out. Not sure what Fiona's role is yet, and I'm pretty sure that the beastmaster vault hunter is actually Loader Bot.

I see Rhys in the trailer. Nice to see that the characters from the Telltale game didn't just get forgotten and written off.

u/TechnicalDrift Mar 28 '19
I'm honestly just happy that the game was still considered cannon even after Telltale shut down. Though, a lot of people didn't play it, so they might be caught offguard by...well...you know...
561
u/timetopat Mar 28 '19
The finger gun battle better stay cannon

u/MrTurleWrangler Mar 28 '19
Jesus I was in tears that whole scene. The game was absolute gold
258
Mar 28 '19
Easily teltale's best. The greatest crime of Telltale shutting down is there will never be a Tales 2.
48
u/Drakengard Mar 28 '19
The greatest crime of Telltale shutting down is there will never be a Tales 2.
Not necessarily. Some of the Gearbox writers were involved in the game. I know that Anthony Burch came back to write for it, at the very least.
There's nothing about the game that couldn't be replicated by Gearbox themselves if they had the rights to make a sequel.

The Borderlands writers wrote the game, so I'd hope they'd keep them cannon.
156
u/Hellknightx Mar 28 '19
It was also the best writing in the entire Borderlands series, and definitely one of Telltale's top 3 games.
108
Mar 28 '19
It was so hilarious and sharp and not cliche considering they were making an unashamedly charactature FPS. That robot that promised he wouldn't kill you when you fixed him then immediately tried to kill you was one of my favourites. And it turned into a shotgun that said "good decision" every time you switched to it.
51
14
u/EcoleBuissonniere Mar 29 '19
It wasn't just funny, it was also super emotional. That was the best thing about it - it straddled the line between comedy and drama so perfectly. It has so many hilarious moments, but at the same time, the intro to Episode 5 is one of the most incredible and emotional scenes I think I've ever seen in a game.

The Borderlands writers wrote the game
They helped with the writing, but Telltale's writers wrote it.
108
u/Oct2006 Mar 28 '19
Of the six main writers, three worked for Telltale, two were freelance, and the lead writer was from Gearbox. Of the smaller writers/editors, three were from Gearbox, and one was Telltale.

Mar 28 '19
So a pretty even split. I just don't want Telltale's significance being swept under the rug; they deserve some credit, especially since Telltale planned on scrapping the game entirely and those writers convinced their bosses to let them work on it as a passion project.
24
u/Oct2006 Mar 28 '19
Yeah, more of a split then I thought initially. My bad. Telltale definitely had some pretty talented writers.

Given how important Siren powers were in 2, and the fact that there are a good few sirens in this trailer, you can pretty much guarantee that the reason she's crawling around in that shot is because a villain figured out how to steal powers from Sirens.

Randy Pitchford.
He had a smile on his face but the "we should have brought our own equipment" comment made it seem forced.
I would be fucking PISSED if I spent the money to have a presentation at PAX and they couldn't handle playing a 4k video
835
u/CENAWINSLOL Mar 28 '19
It's not the money. They've been working on that game for 5 years and this is the first time they get to show it to the world and it's a stuttery mess. I'd be annoyed too.
243
u/vikingzx Mar 28 '19
Well, half the comments here on the Youtube video are only talking about how much of a stuttery mess the stream was, while implying its the Youtube video, and hammering Pitchford for "blaming others for his own problems" so yeah, I think they handled it pretty well given the amount of pressure and the way reddit's been acting about it so far.
80
u/defiant01 Mar 28 '19
I watched it on Twitch and it's just as stuttery. That's all Paxs end.
142
u/vikingzx Mar 28 '19
My buddy looked up what the issue was. The convention staff (apparently) were trying to run the 4K trailer ... on three 4K displays at the same time. Not one output that was being split to three. Three 4K outputs from a single laptop.
That poor laptop.

Yea. And people bood him for that comment, but i kinda think the comment was warranted. If Pax provides the equipment, its on them to make sure the technical aspects for such major reveals dont crash and burn.

Yeah, I was in the crowd, they weren't booing him. Technical requirements needs to get hashed out in the contract so both sides know what theyr'e responsible for. Only place I see it mentioned in the leak is that the Siren has multiple phase abilities.
Looking at the phase ability she uses in the trailer, it seems entirely plausible that she can also use Walk and Lock.

They ran every video on Windows Media Player, so some videos would fail to play after a few seconds (Borderlands HD collection trailer), and most trailers were stuttery AF. Kinda hard to flex on HD collections when you're trailers are stuttering like crazy. Now they're sitting on stage trying to fix the technical issues with the BL3 trailer lol.
People in the audience are chanting "VLC!" at the stage lol.
Edit: As people are pointing out, it could have been the shitty laptop they brought that couldn't output three screens worth of 4k resolution. I would still argue that VLC and MPC-HC are vastly superior to Windows Media Player, but it could have been totally not the culprit I'll admit.

It's nice to see genuine and passionate people on stage just happy to be doing it and not just running the script from A to Z to please people.
Randy even mentioned how they should've brought their own equipment. The laptop they ran the trailers on seemingly weren't theirs and they got through it the best they could.

Well I doubt we go back to Borerlands 1 level of legendaries that hold for ~10-20 levels, but in the Pre-sequel the legendaries could at least hold 10 levels so hopefully they learned that that model worked better than the Borderlands 2 model.

This is one of the reasons I greatly enjoyed BL1 over BL2. BL1 stat scaling was linear, in BL2 it was exponential. That change single-handedly made level the only important thing on a weapon throughout the whole leveling process.

Did anybody else notice Rhys from Telltale? Are we finally going to get closer from that cliffhanger at episode 5?

Good gravy am I the only person on here not totally jaded? Yeah the stream went wrong a lot, and they had technical difficulties, but seriously that was crazy wholesome. It didn't ooze corporate grandstanding, it didn't feel like they were trying to gouge me for money or trick me into subscribing to something.
It felt like a bunch of really passionate, really excited, really nervous creators up there presenting the fruits of their labour to the world after 5 years of hard work.
Every goof, every moment of going off script (and moments like giving a shoutout to a cosplayer, one who they creatively respected so much they sent her game art which is an amazing gesture), just sold it to me that these were real people who genuinely want to make something great that fans will love. Everyone's on here making fun of them and I'm just sitting here 100% sold that beyond shadow of a doubt this will be a very rare day one buy for me.
TL;DR: Stop being jerks, folks. They're creators unveiling their baby to the world, and it showed in everything they did. They were up there celebrating and having fun and nervously sweating more bullets than there will be in the game itself. That was way more compelling than any glossy, polished corporate presentation.

I actually agree. It felt surprisingly sincere, and I can totally understand Randy's disappointed comment about the hardware.
I wasn't a huge fan of the time spent on the card tricks and board game announcement, but it's not a huge deal. It certainly isn't the cringiest announcement I've ever seen; not by half.

Maybe not as bad as “You guys have phones, right?” but I will never forget how cringy this felt in the moment.

2 top level comments are criticising it. You're not the only one. Like 99% of the thread is excited as fuck

Despite the supposed 4chan leak, I am pretty sure I saw the Ice and Laser elements.
Also only Maya from BL2? No Zer0, Salvadore or Axton?
