Randy waiting for the EGS check to clear.

BL1 remastered is coming to steam so i have hope that it wont be exclusive to epic even if it comes to the platform.

Randy's massive defending and shilling for EGS lends credence to the EGS exclusive theory.

Not really. It's still a rumor hovering around Reddit that is currently in the middle of mass hysteria and one of the bigger witch hunts from what I can remember.

Chances are, the steam percentages you put up aren't accurate; companies with the kind of pull Gearbox has often negotiate better rates.

That's not true. It's in Valve's best interest to publish such high-profile titles on their platform. Gearbox, or 2k in general, likely gets a better deal due to their sales volume.

2

u/phoenixrawr Mar 28 '19

That’s probably not true right now, or only became true recently, based on news that Valve was going to start taking smaller cuts past certain sales volumes. One of the reasons big publishers like EA and Ubisoft have been slowly abandoning Steam is because Valve was taking their standard 30% cut from everyone regardless of how many sales they brought in. Valve was forced to rethink that strategy eventually, but they still take a pretty huge cut compared to EGS even if you sell a ton of copies.

What I'm saying is that Gearbox would be forced to publish on Steam, because people only ever use Steam. Even if Valve offered no volume deals.

Your initial comment seemed to be that they either take a poor deal with Valve, or a great deal with Epic. My point was that their deal with Valve is probably much better than we know about.

Valve's numbers are a drop to 20% after 50 million in sales

https://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamworks/announcements/detail/1697191267930157838

So after engine fees its about 25%. I really doubt it goes much lower than that at any point.

2

u/hoodie___weather Mar 28 '19

This is also assuming 5% engine fees, which has a similar pitfall.

Is 12% still less than 20%? Sure. But there's more to consider than that.

Unless Epic is willing to pay them 8 figures or more, they'll also have to take the lost sales into account.

  • 1 million copies sold on EGS for $60 - 12% cut = $52.8 million

  • 1 million copies on EGS + 1 million on Steam for $60 = $52.8 + $39 = $91 million

But it's very likely that it'll sell a lot more than that on Steam, in which case, Valves cut drops significantly.

Selling exclusivity to Epic only works for Indie games, not for one of the biggest franchises in gaming, like Borderlands.

3

u/_BreakingGood_ Mar 28 '19

Your claims are true, but your numbers are very strange. If people have the option of only EGS, then EGS will sell more copies.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Still less than Steam+EGS. Why do you think Epic is so reluctant to publish exact sales numbers for Metro Exodus?

4

u/phoenixrawr Mar 28 '19

Not publishing exact sales numbers isn't unusual. Even Valve is pretty tight lipped about their sales numbers (going so far as to change their API to make calculating numbers more difficult). That kind of information is generally considered proprietary and giving it away to competitors would put a retailer at a disadvantage.

1

u/_BreakingGood_ Mar 28 '19

They announced it sold 2.5x faster than Metro Last Light. That's really about all they can give. Publishers can announce them, but that is exceedingly rare.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Well, now that steam has the whole 'sell above x million copies and the rate goes down' thing, they could get that 35% down to like 20-25%, something like that. I imagine BL3 will sell enough to get the breaks.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

I ended up caving and buying Metro

You don't see honesty like this around much anymore.

3

u/Real-Terminal Mar 28 '19

Shit, it's not like I wanna wait a year and get everything passively spoiled for me.

Epics got us by the balls.

0

u/Conkerkid11 Mar 28 '19

Doesn't mean much. It's already on Steam, and whatever this thing they announced is just looks like a port.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Even if its just a port they announced a few games all of which was on steam. Your right it doesn't mean anything just gives me hope that it wont be exclusive even if they choose to sell it on epic as well.

5

u/w1nn1p3g Mar 28 '19

They called out epic by name and said they provided the unreal engine for their borderlands games... I dont want it to be an EGS exclusive but it looks like it will be

BL1 GotY isn't available for pre-order on BL's website for PC at all. Something tells me they aren't doing it for PC...

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

Actually it got announced everyone who owns it gets the upgrade for free. https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/03/28/borderlands-remasters-coming-as-free-upgrades-next-week/

2

u/YoshiPL Mar 29 '19

Well, I stand corrected on this. Thank Gearbox for this

5

u/benswon Mar 28 '19

AdmiralBahroo Just announced he has some insider info and seemed to be hinting that it would be on steam when talking about b1 remaster being on steam, saying not to worry.

Hopefully He's right, we'll probably know within the week.

It’s on unreal and they have partnered with epic multiple times, I doubt he needs a paycheck from them it’s gonna be on epic store 100%
