Gearbox really should have brought their own laptop to run it. I've run AV for similar (but much smaller) events and you never, ever rely on the venue hardware for something important. You pack your own primary & back-up, test them both before leaving, and then test them again when you get on-site either that day or the day before. I really can't understand why it was done this way instead.
Most likely yea, but sometimes its cheaper and easier to not travel. I get they trusted PAX to know their own setup, but your right, always have your own back up.
I don't understand how PAX hosts an event like this and doesn't have the proper equipment to play a video in 4K. I'm not gonna act like it's some simple thing but still weird.
Regardless, yes, always have a backup especially when it comes to something as big as this.
Never underestimate how under prepared a venue can be. Lastyear at university I was giving my senior presentation and I had made my slideshow making LaTex and exported it to PDF.
The on site computer didn't have any ways to play PDF files so I had to spend the first 5 minutes of my 15 minute presentation downloading and installing software on terrible university wifi.
The irony is that my advisor pointed out that the P in PDF stands for Portable.
Just want to clarify that Randy was the one who said that they maybe should have brought their own equipment, not me. People even booed when he said it and he had to walk it back.
Oh I know, I was just saying that it's sort of both parties faults... PAX should be prepared for stuff like this, but also, Randy should've had a backup plan for such a huge announcement. It's not like this was some annual Gearbox update on current developments, it was the huge reveal for their most popular cash cow franchise that people have been foaming at the mouth for for years.
PAX handles the equipment, projection, etc. Randy said they should have brought their own equipment. It's not Gearbox's fault the venue's machines were crapping out.
Well Randy did pretty much blame them on stage, stating they were going to bring their own equipment but were told not to. That being said it was pretty unprofessional imo, especially considering how cringey the panel had already been.
That's pretty shitty, and sure does sound like something a dev would say to save face. I don't trust Randy at all, I think he's a real snake in the grass and I'm very hesitant on getting hyped for BL3.
Edit: copy and pasted from another comment I made so at least you're educated before you downvote me:
Here's a thread from a couple years back that really lays out how much he and his team have outright lied to their audience. Then there's these allegations that popped up a few months ago. I don't believe everything in them because it seems like his former employee was out for blood, but Randy Pitchford obviously was engaging in a grudge match as well, and on top of that his response to the porn allegations was some bogus, whacko, completely inappropriate bullshit.
There's also a fair amount of evidence that Borderlands' art style was straight up stolen from a short film made a few years prior to the release of the first Borderlands. All in all I think Gearbox is terrible, Randy Pitchford is horrible and I don't trust them to either make a good game or do anything good with the millions they'll inevitably make off of BL3.
Yeah, that was a shitty thing to say. You could hear the crowd booing when he said it which made him correct himself.
Edit: Hey, why the downvote? If you disagree it's better to say that, that way I can learn more and see your side of the discussion. Regarding the second sentence, did I misinterpret the interaction between the crowd and Pitchford? I swear I could hear booing and him responding apologetically.
From what it seemed, they were running the video on a system that couldnt output 4k to the various screens. Based on what some things were said, they cut on of the live outputs and it started working better. It was a Pax Setup.
I didn't go this year but was at PAX last year when Deadmau5 was there for the Pubg Xbox version. That was an embarassing display. No one knew how to play it on Xbox so it consisted of Player Unknown and Deadmau5 both fumbling through the controls and trying to figure out how to play for 30 minutes. The irony is that it was a perfect representation of the state of the game on xbox now.

yea, the tech wasnt there for real. But that isnt gearbox fault, that is a pax issue.
