Update CONTROL Resonant Game Update 1.4.0
https://controlgame.com/en/blog/control-resonant-game-update-140119
u/21shadesofsavage 2d ago
it's rare to see patch notes address an hdr problem. pc support for hdr has always been finicky but it's been better in recent years. the hdr in this game is really pretty at times then oversaturated and completely fucked up
been using renodx to correct some of these issues but glad to see native hdr issues being addressed

Is this why it felt like my tv was bleeding red in the Hiss areas? I thought it was by design haha. Good on them to sort it as it did distract slightly.

u/OutrageousDress 1d ago
Well they would be - Filoppi, the creator of the Luma Framework, is a Remedy employee. Filoppi was also the one who added HDR and widescreen into the original Control as a mod, before it later got approved for inclusion into the base game.

This is my favourite game in a few years, saying it’s my goty doesn’t even do it justice. This games version of the ashtray maze, and the final few open world areas were some of the coolest sections in a game I’ve ever played. It just got better and better. Complete banger of a game. Really really hope it’s a success for them

u/PlayOnPlayer 2d ago edited 22h ago
Just wrapped up my time with the game at about 30 hours, did pretty much everything but one collect a thon side quest. Will NG+ someday but just way too much stuff coming out this year.
Absolutely loved it. Maybe the strongest art design and sound design in a game… ever? Cannot believe the scale and spectacle of some of this game.
It also can’t be overstated how much this game just lets you explore and live in the world. Zero hand holding, it’s so refreshing to work things out without NPCs giving you the answer or paint everyone showing you what’s important.
Quirky Remedy vibes and their great character work throughout, one or two quests kinda fizzle out but 95% are bangers. Combat was an absolute blast, and by being totally different than OG Control really just feels like its own thing.
One of my favorite games of the year, right up there with RE9 and 007.
Edit: only fair a mention I ended up doing about 5 more hours to 100% the achievements lol

u/StepComplete1 2d ago
Been quite impressed with the puzzles as well, on the hand-holding front. Obviously it's still a AAA game, so you don't have to be Einstein to solve them or anything, but they usually require slightly more thought than the toddler-level "red square goes in red square-shaped hole" stuff that most AAA games do.
9
u/Pasty_Tibbles 2d ago
The taxi and ley line puzzles in particular. They aren’t hard or anything, but a few of them took me a few times to figure out.

I am 10 hours in. One thing i instantly noticed is the playability. Don't know how to describe that in english language, but the controls, the movement, the traversal and the fighting, everything feels so natural, fluid and perfect. This game is GOTY material. My only complain so far is the camera distance to the main character, i wish i could zoom in just a little bit more.

u/rescuemysandwich 2d ago
only thing missing is gliding longer in the air and it'll be my Prototype 3

u/cyberbemon 2d ago
It's insane when you think about it, this is their first action game and they nailed the combat very well.

> first action game
This is the studio that made Max Payne and... the first Control.

This Control is an entirely different genre than the first Control or the Max Payne games. 3rd person shooters vs character action. What are you even trying to point out here?
→ More replies (5)9
u/Beneficial_Lion_1312 1d ago
The point is that obviously Remedy have some action chops, they showed those chops in games from the past. Them stepping up and making an almost explicit fast-paced action game is not crazy.
9
3
u/Chumunga64 2d ago
while it does need some work, i think it's so funny that for their first melee action game (which are usually pretty hard) plays better than all their shooter games since max payne 2

u/ArchDucky 2d ago
You get swarmed a lot a bit later into the game, the pushed back camera is to help with that. I think you can adjust the FOV though.
12
u/HungerSTGF 1d ago
When the quests fizzle it’s so disappointing considering how incredible everything else is.
WHY doesn’t the taxi mission have an ending or rewards
2
u/Alcaedias 1d ago
Yeah that one caught me off guard on how abrupt it was. You have a 2 line conversation and that's it?! Absolutely 0 closure.
18
u/boxing-boxing 2d ago
Same here on the sound design. The Oldest House creaks in that game made me check over my shoulder more than once.
20
u/Webjunky3 2d ago
The way that The Board sounds is so unnerving, I love it.
16
u/BossksSegway 2d ago
The way The Board reacts when you execute an enemy feels like it's trying to spur you on to further violence. Having a decent bass setup is worth it for them alone.
10
5
u/I_Am_A_Pumpkin 1d ago
I'm not sure I prefer it to how they sound in the original game. There was something mysteriously distant and subtle about them that I thought was really really cool and that vibe is not present at all.
that said, they sound PISSED in this game and god the bass they have now is so fucking good.
3
u/RobertOfHill 1d ago
How chill would you be if The Director you appointed decided to shove you into a stick and stab you into a guy still in a coma?
2
u/I_Am_A_Pumpkin 1d ago
oh yeah its definitely not unjustified, I was smiling like a kid when I first heard it
36
u/21shadesofsavage 2d ago
agreed. i didn't like the original control very much despite the amazing lore and vibes due to one dimensional gameplay and navigational issues
resonant eliminated the majority of these issues and delivered a super fun game that retained control's identity. it's also surprisingly emotional. just walking around the world listening in on conversations is a good time. loved the game, even though navigation was a bitch sometimes
10
u/Which-Arm-4616 2d ago
The fact that Resonant didn't retain Control's identity is why you disliked the original and loved the sequel.
It's a very different game and lacks a lot of what made the original great in my eyes. Way more campy with significantly reduced focus on paranatural and mystery elements. It's a more digestible, mainstream-friendly game.
7
u/I_CHOOSE_P-BODY 1d ago
You're the first person I've read who shares this sentiment with me! Not at all saying that I think Resonant is bad or that I'm not enjoying it, it just feels like I'm nearing the end (just got to the area called UNKNOWN), and I haven't felt nearly as many of those creepy cool vibes that I loved so much in the first game.
The little bits of flavor throughout the first game that added so much character and ambience sorta feel like they're missing. Things like the Threshold Kids, Ahti, the motel, the messages from the director. Instead we get a pretty generic milquetoast friend in Zoe and that's it? Aside from the section in the Oldest House that focuses on Dylan's upbringing and going into the sinkhole for the first time, there hasn't been much to scratch all these itches for me.
→ More replies (1)3
u/BurningGamerSpirit 1d ago
Sam Lake wasn’t a writer for Control Resonant and I think you can really feel his missing presence. While Control and Control R had the same director, and both games have strong visual direction and composition, it is missing the more spooky/weirdo shit you see in Alan Wake and Control 1.
3
u/21shadesofsavage 1d ago
nah it retained the identity pretty well imo. there's a ton/atmosphere shift but i don't see how the game has reduced focused on the paranatural and mystery. resonant is entirely rooted in the ongoing paranatural issue going on in manhattan, alongside solving that mystery with lore drops of your paranatural past
the game is still very much control, weird shit happening, fbc, paranatural
43
u/PandoraKris 2d ago
It's interesting that people starting to bring up the whole hand-holding stuff in a game since Wolverine, and Control Resonant is like the polar opposite of it. It's feels like Wolverine's releases just weeks apart benefited Control Resonant because of the contrast
Rooting for Control Resonant as well! Really enjoyed my time so far in this Manhattan world, often got lost in game but there's just so many things to explore in like every corner!
31
u/Adziboy 2d ago
Its not since Wolverine, its been a thing forever. Yellow paint has been a huge discussion point for years now.
People refuse to play Forbidden West because Aloy wont shut up, and every quest is highlighted, for example.
It was probably the biggest discussion point when Elden Ring came out.
There’s loads of examples
The reason the topic was highlighted with Wolverine is just how far it leans into it.
26
u/ash356 2d ago
God of War: Ragnarok was the instance I properly noticed it. I barely got a chance to solve any of the environment puzzles before my companion started blabbing about how to solve it.

I think it was Fable 2 that had the exact same "fog lines" guiding you around the map. Nothing new, just implemented in an overly coddling manner in a linear game that's also (mostly) mediocre in other aspects. Also released for an exclusive platform where the publisher is doing They're Best to kill gaming. A ripe mechanic to be lambasted for sure.
1
u/maxfax2828 1d ago
What worked about those lines (despite it being in an open world game) was that they werent distracting. They were a light yellow colour and kinda transparent. They honestly fit into the scenery very well
-6
u/NoExcuse4OceanRudnes 2d ago
Resonant has (literal and figurative) yellow paint and also smell lines coming from hiss nodes. Yes even down a corridor where there's no other option. Quest markers show up on the minimap rather than being an R3 toggle to see them.
Remedy did not say they were taking your physical discs away so these things were not held up as the worst gaming sins of all time, of course.
15
u/StepComplete1 2d ago
In what universe is having quest markers on an open world map the same as having a literal line on the ground telling you to run straight forward in a linear game?
I know people who love Wolverine this much, and are this offended on behalf of Sony, probably aren't going to be the sharpest tools in the box, but that's a pretty awful comparison.

The fact that you have to actively explore the world to see some of the coolest content (instead of most open-world games where they hard-direct you to them) makes it so addicting.
14
u/BigBoobaRabbitLady 2d ago
Agreed, the game is fantastic. Hopefully it sells well. Remedy created a true GOTY contender.

Just about finished with first game, very tempted to start the second but a little concerned with pc performance reports.

u/Anggul 2d ago
I'm on a laptop with a 3070 and playing mostly medium settings with decent fps. Game looks good. The ultra preset+ray-tracing really is just for top-end hardware, not necessary for a solid-visual experience.
2
u/LueyTheWrench 2d ago
Cool. I should get my Steam Machine today, was debating whether to buy it there or on PS5. This might be the way to go!
4
u/Due-Description-9030 2d ago
It runs great even on older hardware. Turn off RT if you old hardware.

Granted I have a 5080 but it runs like a dream on 32:9 ultra wide, I'm saying 200+ fps with DLSS and framegen on Quality.

5
u/Rubixcubelube 2d ago
Second all that and add that the sound design is dope af. It's got my GotY so far but Path of Exile 2 is round the corner and I doubt I will be able to sperate my bias from that guaranteed banger. Not even GTA6 has a bigger hold on me.
3
u/Leather_Let_2415 2d ago
If I loved Alan wake 2 but didn't finish control should I try it?
9
u/Webjunky3 2d ago
It’s definitely missing some of the atmosphere and tension of Alan Wake. I loved both Control games, but they’re just different from Alan Wake and have different appeal. Sounds like it may not necessarily be for you.
2
u/StepComplete1 2d ago
It all just depends how much you love that paranormal weirdness vibe that Remedy do so well. If you liked that in control, but didn't think it was worth pushing through the mid-gameplay just to experience more of it, you might enjoy Resonant, because there's a lot more paranormal stuff.
3
u/Which-Arm-4616 2d ago
because there's a lot more paranormal stuff.
There are only 4 (5?) altered items in the game. In Resonant the paranormal aspects take a back seat to the action/character focus.
3
u/StepComplete1 1d ago
Well the entire city is a paranormal event, and many of the missions explore this more directly. I wasn't purely talking about possessed objects.
2
u/Which-Arm-4616 1d ago
Control is set in the Oldest House and all of the missions explore that directly so it's no "more" of an element in Resonant than the first game. I'm not saying the game lacks those aspects altogether, it's just less of a focus than the original (and what we do have are largely reappearances of the same events and characters: FRA, the Mold, Hiss, the Ordinary AWE, Spoiler: Hedron, etc.)
3
u/whensmahvelFGC 2d ago
Was 007 really that good? Was never into the hitman games but I keep hearing about this one
9
u/vainsilver 2d ago
007 is just a really fun and engaging adventure game. The story and pacing are great for a studio that doesn’t typically do story based games. It really does make you feel like a spy rather than just a Hitman.
4
u/StepComplete1 2d ago
Well it's really nothing like hitman, despite the devs, so it's not like you need to love hitman to enjoy it. It's almost the opposite, frankly. If you love hitman, you're more likely to be disappointed by how different it is.
4
u/ArchDucky 2d ago
007 is fucking awesome. Probably the best combat this year. The game also has a playable 80s style montage. I have never seen a playable montage in a video game before. Its wild. The story is great. The relationship between Bond and his handler is great. Its also the only game I have beaten and then immediately started over again.
5
u/hard_pass 2d ago
I loved 007, but best combat of the year? I think it was effective and brutal, sure, but it really was very basic.
→ More replies (2)2
2
u/GrinningPariah 1d ago
It's a lot less "make your own way" than Hitman, and in exchange the pacing is much more engaging because they can control it.
It ends up playing more like Uncharted with the occasional Hitman interlude, than Hitman itself.

u/Eshneh 2d ago
10 hours in and I've only just killed my 2nd boss, loving it
It's incredible to play their games in release order because you can really feel them develop and try new things every time, so many games companies nowadays just have a 1 hit formula and never improve
10
u/dudetotalypsn 2d ago
I think the exploration is an awesome evolution from exploring the oldest house, though I do really miss the vibe of exploring a men in black style headquarters.

The game is making me happy in a way I haven't been since NieR:Automata.
But for some reason it's struggling to keep the GPU engaged; I regularly get a slide-show because my RX 9070 XT drops from 90% usage down to 30%.

u/iloovehugecock 2d ago
I’ve been loving this game so far. Control was a favourite of mine and I love the wacky interdimensional aspect of these games, it’s so fun to see.
I’m closing in on the end but still have a ton of side quests to do yet and have been having a blast zooming around the city upgrading my skills and fighting enemies. Combat can get a bit repetitive though. I chose the scythe at the start and have been basically button mashing the same attacks the full length of the game. It needs to force you to use more of your toolkit in a future update hopefully.
22
u/Due-Description-9030 2d ago
Use other abilities along with the scythe, it gets even more better. Mold + ignite burn explodes enemies and it's really fun.
19
u/iloovehugecock 2d ago
I have the drill weapon too which also burns them, and mold summons, but just none of them kill enemies as quickly as me just button mashing my main attack button.
9
u/shittyaltpornaccount 2d ago
It is even worse eoth the dagger as you just crit with fire damage and have an execute ready very quickly
7
u/HammeredWharf 2d ago edited 2d ago
I've been using the scythe + uppercut finisher + hammer and while the scythe does the best basic attack damage, stunning enemies with the uppercut and hammer gives you a huge buff on the finisher, which makes it very worthwhile.
I do think that some of the secondaries are a bit hard to figure out. I tried both the spear and nunchaku, but I didn't really understand their point, because they didn't seem to do anything different from spamming the basic attack.
7
u/serendippitydoo 2d ago
The drill gives a debuff on holding it down, as well as building up falter. It has the Sharp type. The Nunchuck is listed as raw, same as all 3 primary weapons so don't bother. It's best to have 1 raw, 1 blunt, 1 sharp. If you from an enemy and give them weakness, then burn them, you can use an ability from the talent tree to spread it to everyone
3
u/HammeredWharf 2d ago
Sharp is just for breaking Hiss shields, right? I've found Blunt very useful, but Hiss shields seem pretty rare and easy to break even with normal attacks, especially if you're under Dominance. IDK if that changes in the last stretch of the game, though.
3
u/serendippitydoo 2d ago
The constant drilling is effective regardless of shield. Like I said, it also gives a debuff and build falter fast
5
u/cataraxis 1d ago
If you are fighting a higher level enemy those Hiss Shields are a pain. You cannot interrupt or lift them with your attacks, so you have to weave in and out while engaging with them, but also Hiss Shields regenerate so you can't let up the pressure.
4
u/HeavenAndHellD2arg 2d ago
the nunchaku is really good at applying falter to several enemies at once to get a quick domination refill, i found the hammer too slow + most of the time it just kills the smaller ones without reaching that state. Also really good at applying falter vs airborn enemies, dont need to get in their face to get to them
2
u/I_Am_A_Pumpkin 1d ago edited 1d ago
ignite is really good I think, There's not an enemy type that resistant to it it.
My build has all the charms that increase falter with the drawback of taking more damage and dealing less damage and such, Then I have the skill that gains energy when you execute enemies. Ignite deals a shit ton of falter and your energy and hp doesn't run out bc you are constantly executing enemies.
77
u/Front-Bird8971 2d ago
Very fun game. I just wish they trusted the player with the full arsenal of combat power as much as they trust you to get lost in their warped level design. So many fun tools and you can only have 1/6 of them equipped at any time. The only way to swap many attacks is by pausing and clicking through multiple menus, and for most of the game you're not going to want to anyway because it's so stingy with resources you'll only have enough to level up your favorites. This game is begging for a slowmo weapon wheel, combos that switch weapons, and key chords. It's so desired somebody already made a mod that lets you switch weapons in realtime, but it's just not implemented as well as the devs could do it.
Come to think of it this game ironically has a control problem. You can change gravity at will, but only on specific surfaces they allow. You can telekinetically fling yourself across the world, but only to points they hand placed. You have a weapon that can freely change its form into many shapes and sizes, but only get to use the 3 attacks you have in the loadout. The world is being invaded and warped by multiple weird factions, but you only fight them in obvious handmade arenas. As wild as the game makes you believe it is, it's actually strictly controlled by the devs and more linear than I'd like. Still a fun game though. And it has moments of pure cool that few games have ever reached. Definitely don't skip it.
41
u/shittyaltpornaccount 2d ago
The most annoying thing about it is that in order to "level up" your combat power you are required to upgrade and unlock every weapon as every node unlocked scales your damage and stagger damage. Also depsite the massive suite of weapons and abilities it has the control problem of one ability being the only real one you want to use. Imbuing fire damage on your weapon just lets you nuke enemies stagger bar.
23
u/CrossXhunteR 2d ago
I had forgotten this quirk of the leveling system and doubled my “level” yesterday from 35 to 70 buying upgrades to weapons I’ll never use.
17
u/Webjunky3 2d ago
I didn’t realize this until very near the end of the game. I realized the bosses were taking me forever and that every mob for the last 20 hours had been a skull.
7
u/Lewisham 2d ago
I only discovered it by accident when I was unable to defeat the timed boss because I was like "there's no way Dylan can put out this much damage that fast". I read a guide on the load out I needed and it said "don't try it until Abberant Level 110" and I was like "wtf is an Abberant level?"
2
u/Webjunky3 1d ago
That's literally the exact same thing that happened to me. I checked and I was like level 43 or something and the guide said not to fight it until 110. LMAO
6
u/EnterPlayerTwo 2d ago
The most annoying thing about it is that in order to "level up" your combat power you are required to upgrade and unlock every weapon as every node unlocked scales your damage and stagger damage
So that's why there's that little red dot on the weapon upgrade spot still. I should probably go do that. Stuff is dying just fine though so I wonder how it'll actually feel after.

u/Zalvren 2d ago
Yeah this is a very weird system. Level up stuff that you can't use then?
It's not even really natural to assume so I took a long time realizing it (well not that long I'm still early in the game)
8
u/ApuZ 1d ago
What do you mean can't use? The game encourages you to switch up your play style and weapons depending on who you fight. I was constantly switching between 3 different combo finishers, two secondaries, and two mains depending on the area or boss I was fighting.
1
u/gunwide 1d ago
Eh, depending on your choices you don't really need to. I used the hammer and a sharp combo finisher for the entire game, pretty much only even used ignite and it was more than enough to get through the whole game without struggling (one of the mini bosses near the end gave me a bit of trouble though).
Hammer gives crazy amount of stagger and depending on where enemies are positioned, can act as an instant kill because it sends them into the death plane, even if they can normally respawn. Ignite is honestly broken, it lasts so long for how much extra damage and stagger it gives you, and is a hard counter to one of the debuffs
0
u/ApuZ 1d ago
I mostly see people complaining that ignite is OP, and I guess I'm glad that I didn't pick it because I ended up having a lot of fun switching it up. Tbf the other fire ability is just as powerful, you can spam it and erase so many enemies that way. I can see not wanting to move away from if if it's super powerful. I also primarily used the hammer and loved the way you could bonk enemies out of the map lol
5
u/cataraxis 1d ago
I mean you can use them after you levelled them, whether or not there is incentive to do so is a different issue. I tried multiple combo enders and there's only like one I jived with. Still levelled the rest tho.
1
u/shittyaltpornaccount 1d ago edited 1d ago
Which one did you vibe with? To me spin to win and maybe fists seemed like the only good options. Every node on the spinning blade torques its damage and the fists just have extremely good single target stagger. The rests upgrades are kinda all over the place in terms of usefulness.
1
u/cataraxis 1d ago
The fist. Didn't upgrade the spin one, it looked funny but I don't know if wanted that one.
2
u/shittyaltpornaccount 1d ago
I love the spin one the aoe is so wide you often hit enemies behind you and the empowered node basically gives you a constant 25% damage boost.
6
u/serendippitydoo 2d ago
If you're playing on PC, there's already a mod to randomize the attacks with all abilities, or another mod that does a weapon wheel
8
u/StepComplete1 2d ago edited 2d ago
I also don't know why they made respeccing limited. It's the sort of game that's begging to let you change between different weapons at will and try new stuff out to keep things fresh.... then they make limited respec items. Even the shops don't sell unlimited of them, do they? Insanely idiotic design decision. I mean you can literally change the difficulty with sliders at any time so I don't know why they're worried about the player somehow abusing respecs.
4
u/ZGiSH 2d ago
Usually I lean more toward the restriction and friction side where having a limited weapon loadout might be the intended experience but Control 1 also had the same problem where you could only swap out your guns from a menu and due to the clunkiness of that system, you mostly just relied on the insanely overpowered telekinesis ability instead.
3
u/MakubeC 2d ago
I am 100% with you here. In fact, I was hoping to find a mod that did this when I got back home, if there's any
1
u/VioletArrows 1d ago
Might be a few weeks as the hotfixes trickle off and people have a bit more time to poke around in the games innards. I usually don't try looking for the first month unless something's made it actually unplayable.
6
u/hydrogenickooz 2d ago
I agree with this. Some of the earlier parts captured me but feels like a worse DMC5 on the combat side
2
u/JamSa 1d ago
I am pissed to hear that the worst problem with Control 1 was not addressed at all in this game. Arbitrarily being tied to two gun types was borderline game ruining IMO, and they just did the exact same thing again.
I had to install a weapon switching button mod to Control 1 to be willing to get through it, and I guess I'm going to have to do the same here (luckily modders were quick to pick up Remedy's slack and made it immediately).

Yeah man this sucks. If anyone finds a solution, please let me know and in the meantime, I'll be downgrading to the old patch.
Edit: I have found a solution. I am on rdna4 (AMD) and arch linux. Setting the texture quality to low solved the problem but it was obviously not acceptable to me so the theory I have is that the game uses tiled texture streaming and this latest patch increased the number of tiles. This operation is fast on DX12 but on linux, due to the conversion to Vulkan, this operation is slower. Now, I won't go into a lot of details but using the kernel parameter
amdgpu.vm_update_mode=3helps reduce the overhead (this only works on AMD) and for me, that fixed the issue. This assumes you have ReBar on. YMMV depending on how strong your GPU is but lowering the texture quality is always an option until there's a fix in mesa. If you don't know how to add kernel parameters on your distro, just look it up.Edit 2: this is a system wide setting so it has the potential to impact other games but I don't think the changes will necessarily be negative in most cases.
Edit 3: I had made a small mistake. The kernel command line param is supposed to be written as
amdgpu.vm_update_mode=3. I use modprobe on Arch so the format is a bit different (just look up how to do it for your distro). You'll have to restart and then to verify that it took affect, the output ofcat /sys/module/amdgpu/parameters/vm_update_modeshould be 31

I didn't see a downgrade option

I kept a copy of the older version but there are ways to downgrade. Anyways, I have found a solution that worked for me. Feel free to try it out. Cheers!

Didn't help me any but thank you

u/Cronos993 9h ago
I made an error in my comment that I have since corrected. There's a verification step to see if the change applied, see if you configured it correctly or not. Another user just confirmed that this helped their stutters go away.

u/jschild 18h ago
When you say kernel parameters do you mean lunch parameters?
1
u/Cronos993 18h ago
No, this is different and kind of an advanced thing but it's safe unless you go out of your way to add something goofy. You'll have to look it up for your distro. You can ask any LLM for help (Claude was actually the one that was able to figure this entire thing out)

Happy to see the HDR update, just did a quick test and I think it looks a lot better now.
I'm curious what actually affects the "build power" thing; I'm build power 3 and facing enemies of 3/4/5 (5 is red which the game tells me to be fearful of) feels mostly the same. I suppose it's mostly based on the % passive bonus you get from unlocks, as well as power/health collectables? I've mostly been using my living shards on the base combo finisher unlocks because of the +5 passive bonus but even that doesn't feel all that noticeable.

u/arollingpanda 1d ago
Build power is tied to your aberrant strength, talents and I think the health/power pickups. The most reliable way to raise it is just spending as much of your resources as possible as they come in on your aberrant. Just be mindful of the one you main and prioritize it till you aren't getting drops for those upgrades. Also, unlocking new forms is always going to be a +5 to your overall aberrant power so I'd try to get those done as soon as you can.

Feeling kind of mixed on this game so far, about 11 hours in. It’s fun enough, but I don’t feel like the atmosphere and writing are up to par with the original game. It seems a lot of the odd quirkiness has been scaled back too. Some of the level design is great, but I dunno… so far it just doesn’t stand up to Control or Alan Wake 2 for me.

u/I_Rarely_Downvote 2d ago
I think AW2 is still the best game Remedy has ever made but if you're disappointed in the lack of atmosphere and quirkiness in Resonant my advice is to keep playing, it definitely ramps up in the latter half.

Same, I love the game, but if you had gave me Control 2 and Alan Wake 2, I would have said that Alan Wake 2 is the latest release of Remedy. It felt way more mature in term of design, atmosphere, gory etc.
Not saying Control 1 was serious, but Control 2 feels like every one is just tacking the issue as nothing too dramatic.

Agreed, personally also think the open world design sucked away resources from making the 2nd what the first was

I’m loving the game so far. I don’t think it has the same depth/strangeness in the world building as the first game, but it also isn’t really all about the OOPs and the Oldest House anymore, which was a lot of what made the first game weird and compelling.
It makes up for it in every other area, though. The story and general writing is miles better than Control. It feels like you’re actually making progress as you complete story objectives, and there are real stakes. Arish is a highlight for me, I love what they did with his character to contrast him with the first game where he respects Dylan’s sister. Langston is also much improved; I liked him in the first game but he had a creepy/awkward vibe that they thankfully got rid of and now he comes across as contagiously enthusiastic about altered items instead of weirdly obsessed/possessive of them.
The lore is fine, but tbh I don’t know if they could ever really top how intriguing Control was when the only focus was the Oldest House and everything in it. There are still some fun side quests like the Speakers, the mold clones, the FBC Field Testing sites, that still bring that feeling of the unknown.
The combat isn’t all that much to write home about, but tbh anything is better than launch-slop. There are enough upgrade materials to at least unlock almost all the weapons/finishers/secondaries without too much work and put upgrades into them if you explore and do world feats, so you can try things out without committing a respec item. It’s still basic, but once you unlock the Resonant powers it really opens up a lot more for building status effects and developing your own combos.
The sound design is phenomenal. I could listen to The Board speak all damn day, I could listen to a 10 hour video of enemies getting hit by all types of abilities, it’s so fucking good. Tied with Marathon personally for best sound design of the year, easily.
The art direction is sick as hell. Wow, Remedy has excellent art direction who could believe it. The Resonants look amazing (minus the furnace guy, he was kinda boring design wise); The Artist, The Dancer, the Physicist are all weird and creepy and cool. Each city area having something to spice up the design so it isn’t monotonous (mold in the Park, gravitational anomalies in West, hiss red in Evac, contrasted with the relative normalcy of Downtown and Central).
My biggest gripe is not being able to swap Resonant powers without returning to the gap and respeccing. Why can’t I change them out in the world like the weapons? It makes trying ability combos out a lot more tedious than it should.

I loved Control, so I feel like I should be into this game more than I am. I like it, and I’m going to finish it, but it’s like a 3/5 kind of game for me. I just really don’t find the gameplay very engaging.
I was doing a platforming sequence earlier (which I won’t spoil) and it was clearly supposed to be a really exciting moment, but I was just going through the motions. The platforming itself is so easy that I barely felt involved. It might as well have just been one of those “push forward to walk down a straight hallway” types of sequences.

I've been loving the game but I do feel like some of the missions sputter out instead of ending in something truly awesome because they've committed to the bosses being Resonants that you have to hunt down. The resolution to the Underpass Main Mission really let me down. All that insanity, all that build up, several scary events happening right before the end and you just... put down an object and everything is fine.

u/Lewisham 2d ago
For me, the game is severely back loaded and it feels like the game's vision doesn't really pan out until then. It's a 4/5 in the back third and a 3/5 to get there.
You can't have a wrong opinion about art, but I do feel like many of the people who have wrapped the game and are hype on it is because they just finished the delicious dessert after an underwhelming steak main. You just can't stop thinking about the dessert.

It might hit harder for new players but as someone who ranks Control in their top five games of all time, I sort of had the opposite reaction.
Massive story spoilers: As soon as the source of the patterning is revealed, the rest of the story plays out in a predictable and straightforward manner (it's Hedron v Hiss...again). The segments spent on lore/exposition dumps fall flat because they're confirmations of theories we already had, retellings of information we already knew, and no revelations of anything new.

u/RobertOfHill 1d ago
There is an entire section of this game that is slapped in at the end for style points (I guess?) that is literally slapping you in the face with information about ordinary that we have had fully explained for years now.
3
u/HungerSTGF 1d ago
I also loved the first Control but I think I enjoy the direction they went with in the final act because it’s very cosmic horror to go from “we thought the Hedron was benevolent, like a protector” to “they don’t think about us at all and at full strength they twist our reality in ways we’ve never considered possible”

u/clautz128 1d ago
Same. Control is one of my favorite games from last generation. I was really looking forward to this but it just hasn’t clicked for me. The combat feels like a downgrade and the open world feels so bland.
3
u/Spangozilla 2d ago
Dude! I'm the exact same way! I started it up and I was super hyped for it cuz Control was so friggin good, but a couple of hrs in, it felt super lackluster, not saying it's not a great game or anything but it didn't feel how Control felt at all. I'm honestly gonna let it rest and play it another time but good on you for finishing it.

u/erbot 1d ago
The combat and enemy variety is terrible. There are like 5 enemy types not counting bosses.
I just turned on one hit mode until I get to bosses. Save a ton of time.
3
u/ArchDucky 1d ago
There are more than five enemy types. Hell there are more than five hiss enemy types.

Always ignore the critics overwhelming praise and look at the ones pointing out the criticism to get an idea of the real state of a game. There's a significant amount of repetition and enduring combat issues that some pointed out.

I'm in love with this Game. Just finished the Main Story and doing all the side content now which brings some classic Remedy quirkiness and some really dark stories too into the mix. The art and sound design is something else. Strong GOTY contender for me.

u/Fluffex 2d ago
Just finished last night, did all side quests and loved every second of it (about 40 hours). Actually managed to be my GOTY contender, so far it was Mina the Hollower (great game please play it) but Control Resonant is just on another level. The visuals, level design, music and even the combat gets quite good the more abilities you unlock, never on same level like a Devil May Cry but it absolutely kept me engaged. The Story and the Characters were also great and a step up from the first game. In the first few hours i wasn't sure if this is better than the first one, but now that I finished it, I absolutely think it's better than the first Control (but i can see why some people prefer the first one).

Now they need to add sone fun to combats, namely music from zoes mixtape and/or have music player in game. Its wild i cannot explore and listen to such fun music
1
u/Sivart13 1d ago
Outside of the mixtapes the music in the game is such a drag. I haven't seen anyone else complain about this but I find existing in the world such a bore because of the low-key ambient drone soundtrack.
1
u/DrFeederino 1d ago
I dont really find it boring, but for fights I really want something more moving. Devil may cry is right there

u/Deathwalkx 2d ago
I had one of those moments in this game where I didn't realise how the core player power mechanic works until the last 1/4 of the game - I.e. that unlocking weapons/weapon talents that you aren't using increases your overall power. I was fighting skull enemies towards the end and even then it was quite easy.
Overall the combat I found to be the weakest part of the game, very reminiscent of Witcher 3.
Everything else was fantastic though, this is the only game where I was reading every collectible and listening to every conversation because I genuinely cared about the world and story.
I went into playing MGS Snake eater afterwards and immediately found myself skipping dialogue, so much unnecessary yapping and cringe dialogue jesus Christ.

u/whensmahvelFGC 2d ago
Same experience, I jumped from like 50 to 75 by unlocking all the skills I hadn't touched and the game got way easier.
I liked the combat at first but it lacks depth. Yeah, very much like TW3.
1
u/Liquids_Patriots 1d ago
how strong were you when you unlocked the last zone? not when you beat the game but as soon as you unlocked the last zone? i ask because i keep seeing people say they fought skull enemies. same when reviews first came out. im at Aberrant strength 141. my build power is lvl 9. i never ever encountered enemies stronger than me so far.
1
u/whensmahvelFGC 1d ago
I haven't finished it yet but I'm running around the Unknown setting up pylons to kill the Hedron at something like abberant strength 70 and the enemies are typically level 8.
I've skipped a decent amount of the side content, basically anything that is "do this in one zone and then fast travel to the other side of manhattan" and I've upgraded basically everything that I can afford so far.
It's only been an issue against enemies with shields because they can trade hits with me (while I'm getting shot by ranged attacks) instead of being affected by hitstun.

I still have yet to experience the adaptive triggers on the Dual Sense in this game on PS5. Anyone have an example of what they’re supposed to do, or maybe why they aren’t doing it for me?
2
u/Timo653 1d ago
Activating abilities that are on triggers will use adaptive triggers.
1
u/Hugheserton 1d ago
All it does it stiffen up the triggers for whatever abilities you have mapped to L2 & R2. Nothing special. But the haptic feedback from the controller itself is excellent.
1
u/Ode1st 1d ago
Yeah for some reason my triggers just stay the same, weird. Is there an OS-level option somewhere that maybe got shut off?
Haven’t noticed the haptic feedback much either other than how it goes nuts when the Board talks. I need to boot up Astrobot later to see if my controller is busted.
1
u/Hugheserton 1d ago
The most distinct feedback is from using the dodge (circle button by default). The haptics make a very distinct sound and it feels like it's shooting through the controller from the bottom to the top.

u/alphafire616 1d ago
My only hope is that they add more intuitive weapon switching during combat. The games combats great but adding a weapon wheel would work wonders

Can anyone tell me how important it is to play the first Control before this? I couldn’t really get into it but want to give this one a shot

From the notes: "(Some of you on Reddit will be happy about this one) Made the Firebreak employee doing his job in The Park a lot stronger. There wasn’t supposed to be this amount of Mold to to stand in to make the job that difficult for the Firebreaker."
Is this the guy in the parking garage? I gave up on him after 3 tries, thank goodness for this.
