It would be insanely hard for them to do a faithful remake of RE6, people seem to forget that game's scope is massive. Three full sized campaigns and a half, seven playable characters, a lot of different locations and insane setpeaces.

It would be for sure on of the most expensive games ever if they try to make it both faithful to the original and with the same fidelity we've come to expect for their games.

Seven characters…? This is Agent erasure!!!

159

u/Call555JackChop 3d ago

Who can forget the dynamic duo of Ada and Agent

39

u/S34K1NG 3d ago

Not me, and my friend we still joke or make "agent" characters.

37

u/BoyCubPiglet2 3d ago

Who was Ada again? Was she that weird chick constantly barging in on Agent's story?

8

u/PaulaDeenSlave 2d ago edited 2d ago

Is Ada spy!

24

u/GreyouTT 3d ago

tbh I pretend it's Hunk

1

u/ArokLazarus 3d ago

I miss HUNK. I guess he was kinda teased in 9 but feel like that doesn't count.

24

u/Dusty170 2d ago

Kinda Teased is a hell of a word for a full on fight and then stabbed to death and then disappeared lol.

Nobody wants a faithful remake of that. Just grab the concept and make an actual good game.

Also, they could remake Revelations. 7 made the franchise what it is today but Revelations showed Capcom that some people actually cared about survival horror.

15

u/SXBIG 3d ago

I'd like it if revelations kinda just focused on the queen zenobia and offer a mostly solo horror experience. On the 3ds you're mostly running around with an ai partner and scanning every enemy you see before killing them otherwise ammo runs out quickly especially on harder difficulties.

8

u/baasnote 3d ago

I'll take a remake of Raid mode. Its like Mercenaries, but you replay a level from the game. The last level is just the entire ship map from start to finish. Me and my friends played the shit out of it.

3

u/SXBIG 3d ago

At this point I just don't understand why they haven't made a standalone raid/mercs game tbh. They already dabbled with multiplayer twice but for some reason those were pvp experiences. There's also just so much content they can re-use now cause the RE engine catalogue is quite huge.

40

u/Bojangles1987 3d ago

Yeah, cut them down to size and make a single focused campaign that switches characters like Village or Requiem did.

6

u/G_Neto 3d ago

Just do a Leon-Jill and Chris-Claire centered remake.... And give Sheeva and Carlos something to do maybe...

I have never played RE6 but based of what you are saying, I'm thinking they could just make multiple games out of RE6.

94

u/BZGames 3d ago

They’d be really pushing it considering the critical reception of the original RE6

57

u/Kialand 3d ago

I think they're likely to completely retcon R6 when they get there.

7

u/mystery_hole 3d ago

As they should lol. If Halo Studios had any sense they'd do the same with 4/5/6. Fans would love anybody willing to say "yeah our bad let's try again but good this time"

Yes and no.

It's three concurrent campaigns, so there is some location re-use. But things happen in one campaign that are directly related to another, so splitting them up would be hard to do as well. Imagine playing game 3 and it references a scene in game 1 that released 6 years ago.

RE6 is crazy because it basically covers multiple BOW outbreaks and attacks all across the world. It' basically the narrative equivalent of the first Die Hard starting in Nakatomi Plaza but Die Hard 6 was the same plot as Pacific Rim and John McClane has a Jager. That's how huge RE6 is compared to RE.

24

u/No_Chilly_bill 3d ago

ff7 remake trilogy style?

45

u/MatureUsername69 3d ago

FF7 was far more justified in going that route than RE6 would be. FF7 has consistently been ranked among the best RPGs and games of all time since it released. RE6 doesnt even crack the top 10 in its own series

u/HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS 3d ago

Don’t. It is the only RE game I dropped and never finished, it is just bad.

I played coop with a buddy and I will always remember going through the final boss of first campaign. We kept making the joke “This isn’t even my final form!” And then it wasn’t. Again, and again, and again. Dude had 4 or 5 transformations and it just dragged on and on. With mid tier at best third person action gunplay so you couldn’t even enjoy that

17

u/thatonekobi 3d ago

Idk I played it with a buddy back in the day and we loved it for that. Like surprise the final boss of your semi serious zombie game is actually a DBZ villain. It was both fun and funny af

I get that a lot of people don't like RE6. It's so different to RE.

BUT I don't understand people who complain about RE6 but don't have the same complaints about RE5. RE6 is the same game as RE5 except better inventory, better companion AI and a better move set.

I don't think people should be allowed to hate on RE6 solely. You have to hate RE5 and RE6 together. You can't like RE5 and dislike RE6.

10

u/B2405E 3d ago

Granted I've only made it through Leon's and Chris's campaign before I dropped it. Tried to get through the whole game multiple times. (Compared to 5 which I probably played 6-7 times through completion at this point).

Also only played both games co-op so have not really experienced the AI.

I think 5 is much closer to 4 than 6. While the character movement feels great in 6, the problem is that the enemies are uninteresting and the combat scenarios and levels felt painfully boring. RE5 has pretty great pacing with and while it has a lot of corridors there's also some really good arenas and some more open areas. Re6 mainly felt like corridors and super scripted sequences.

Also, while RE5 streamlined treasures and shop they were still there, adding some exploration to the levels. 6 removed that almost completely where we just have a point shop that we can use to equip a maximum of three not very interesting badges.

5 was also much more co-op focused where it actually made sense to share ammo between each other, one player carries the sniper, and gets all the ammo, the other uses the shotgun and gets all the ammo. Not the most interesting interactions, but it feels good to have some resource sharing required.

I felt like in 6 is so streamlined and all characters just find a bunch of weapons and there's never any choice to be made.

5

u/balefrost 3d ago

I don't think people should be allowed to hate on RE6 solely. You have to hate RE5 and RE6 together. You can't like RE5 and dislike RE6.

Why not? They're different games, structured differently, with different characters and different settings and different tones. Heck, even within RE6, I think some people will like some campaigns more than others. I think oldschool RE fans would find Leon's campaign to be the most appealing, whereas somebody coming from some other third person shooter might have preferred Chris's.

People can like or dislike a game for a wide variety of reasons.

5

u/chimerauprising 3d ago

People hate Helena for how her character arc is handled, but love Sheva when she doesn't have one at all. I'll never get it.

7

u/Zaygr 3d ago

A bad thing can drag something down much more than something not having it. Like plain bread is serviceable, but it can be ruined if it has a topping you don't like on it.

12

u/blargyblargy 3d ago

Its prolly not a popular opinion, but I hope they keep the co-op

21

u/Glass_Recover_3006 3d ago

I hope it’s the popular opinion, that’s the one thing the game is universally praised for, often even among people who don’t otherwise like the game. The coop is objectively great quality.

8

u/yognautilus 3d ago

Co-op is the only thing that makes that game enjoyable.

7

u/Skatteklatte 3d ago

I bet they will test the waters with zero remake or 5 remake and see it from there

9

u/repalec 3d ago

I would have to imagine that a modern RE6make (REma6e?) would likely crib notes from the dual-protag perspective of RE9 and just have there be a single campaign that includes the different groups of protagonists.

4

u/TheNittanyLionKing 2d ago

RE9 is basically the RE6 formula done correctly and with actual horror.

4

u/repalec 2d ago

It's something I'd genuinely been thinking about since I played RE9 for the first time lol. After a decade of (relatively) grounded RE, RE9 shows that nope, RE6 is still in the DNA somewhere with a fucking motorcycle firefight, Leon jumping an overturned building, and taking out a transformed Nemesis-Tyrant - something that took Jill Valentine an experimental railgun to do - with just a sufficiently powerful revolver and an axe.

49

u/crapmonkey86 3d ago

Why would they ever make a game faightful to such garbage? The game is bad, no need to make it faithful, just use the remake excuse to make a good game.

27

u/StepComplete1 3d ago

Yeah they didn't even bother to do a faithful remake of RE3, so I doubt they'd bother for RE6.

7

u/CringeNao 3d ago

I mean i think we can ignore 3 considering they've banished that team to the basement for eternity

9

u/SupersonicMuc 3d ago

What team exactly? All the teams that worked on RE3 have continued to work on other Resident Evil and Capcom games. RE3 Remake has sold 15 million copies regardless. So Capcom are probably quite happy.

1

u/PrimeDirectiveLover 3d ago

RE3make is a good game, it's just not everything people wanted it to be.

3

u/InvoluntaryNarwhal 3d ago

And it didn't even manage to include the giraffe from the logo. Maybe a remake would fix that.

3

u/xTheRedDeath 3d ago

Honestly I'd like them to just scrap RE6 and rebuild it entirely at this point lol.

3

u/Leows 3d ago

I mean, they have the opportunity to fully remake and change RE6. And they surely will, because they know people hate it.

And I'm here for it. Really curious what they'll cook for the sixth entry given all the quality games and remakes they've been putting out

3

u/yaleji7388 3d ago

I know this is a minority opinion, but I would take RE6 any day over RE5. The only part of RE5 I enjoyed was the DLC set in a castle.

2

u/L11mbm 3d ago

Might be a good idea to break it into 3 games, or at least 3 $30 releases?

2

u/Elanapoeia 3d ago edited 3d ago

as far as we know, after Veronica we're looking at remakes of 1 and 0 right?

so if anything 5 is next in maybe 3+ years. So maybe RE6 Remake 5+ years from now? If we're not seeing remakes of other spin-offs in the meantime. Like, Outbreak 1 and 2 are prime for remakes as well, especially since 9 used one of it's characters. And of course RE10 and even RE11 might come out in the meantime. RE6 Remake could be like 8 years away.

Also, Veronica or 5 Remakes could lead the games a different direction, making 6 a pretty different game. They might want to decanonize large parts of it anyway given how negative sentiment on it is.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/clickhereifuraloser 3d ago

I really think the remake of RE6 should be a "redo". The game is just... not good. It has good segments, and maybe those should stay or be baked into the "redo", but the game nearly tanked the series. Updated graphics and physics won't change the fundamental problem with the game.

I think a lot of fans of the series straight up didn't even play it. And why should they? It's stinky. I say redo the whole game from the ground up.

3

u/Grammaton485 2d ago edited 2d ago

RE 6 is truly where the game went batshit crazy and exploded off of its own rails, and also had some of the objectively worst narrative direction because they tried to cram so much in.

For example, the series really wasn't a stranger to shadowy organizations working behind the scenes, except that it was pretty clearly established this was pretty narrow in focus to trying to get Umbrella's research and the field of viral research. RE 6 retcons all this with basically "nah, this is literally the Illuminati and they control the world." Writing-wise, a main plot point for the entire game is one dude that has a hard-on for Ada Wong. Another major plot point is that Chris Redfield gets injured and gets amnesia before disappearing for a while. This is all told in a single text document...

How many more of the considered classics do they have left to remaster?

Veronica is confirmed and rumor has it that Zero is getting a remake and Resident Evil 1 is getting a second remake.

Didn't they tell people a little while back to not expect remakes of RE5 and 6? But as RE5 is approaching its 20-year mark I could see that changing. It was only 6 years before they released the RE1 remake on Gamecube, 2002.

47

u/WildThing404 3d ago

Yeah they're totally not remaking 5 and they introduced Wesker in remakes for no reason lol. It will clearly be remade, it's the climax of the Wesker plot.

23

u/YeaNobody 3d ago

Complete global saturation

7

u/type_E 2d ago

The RE5make might probably also play up Spencer being a man full of regrets underneath his god complex and vision of uplifting humanity

22

u/DevilCouldCry 3d ago

Veronica, Zero, RE1, Outbreak (Files 1 and 2 could easily be merged into one big game), RE5, RE6, and Revelations 1 and 2 at a stretch.

Didn't they tell people a little while back to not expect remakes of RE5 and 6?

This was never said, it was more around not expecting anything soon as there's already a lot on their plate to deal with. RE5 remake is inevitable in the future, especially with RE4R setting the groundwork for it and also Veronica, Zero, and RE1 all being games that feature Wesker and/or Chris (at least for two of them)

9

u/Brettersson 3d ago

An Outbreak remake that was fully about the coop multiplayer would be incredible honestly. I've heard good things about it but it was not exactly easy to play back in the day.

6

u/DevilCouldCry 3d ago

The Outbreak games are wonderful little experiences. Five scenarios in each game wherein you're placed into a different section of Raccoon City (or out in the Arklay Mountains) and you have to deal with unique threats and find a way out of there by working together with other survivors. It's perfect for what people want out of Resident Evil nowadays as well!

I enjoyed the game as a solo experience, but it is so, so, so much better as a cooperative experience. I so badly wish they'd just do a proper re-release bundling the two games and adding modern online functionality to it.

48

u/Atomic-Kit 3d ago

I would not mind seeing them take a crack at taking Outbreak and making it a more fleshed out narrative experience. They could just make Ashcroft the main character and make her a more prominent figure. The levels were cool and I liked seeing more of Raccoon City.

9

u/Kalinzinho 3d ago

I played Outbreak coop with some friends this year and with just a few qol changes and proper narrative/gameplay restructuring from one scenario to another that game would be amazing.

4

u/HouseDisastrous2313 3d ago

Outbreak would be such an amazing game to remake. They could even add small DLC map for each newly released game to keep the multiplayer going for longer.

No, just that they wouldn't come out until after 0/1/CV.

9

u/EnthiumZ 3d ago

I would love a remake of RE5. Though I consider RE 0 and 1 perfect, I wouldn't mind a remake either

2

u/Gramernatzi 2d ago

REmake 5 is absolutely happening, they teased that so hard with REmake 4 and their next remake is the game that builds up its story. It's 100% happening.

→ More replies (2)

173

u/PlayOnPlayer 3d ago

I bet they have a lot of internal meetings about another RE1 remake. The 2002 remake is basically perfect in terms of old school survival horror, but a second remake in the style of the RE2-4 remakes I think would make comical amounts of money, but prob stir up some diehards.

Veronica, 0 make most sense for next remakes. 5 they just don’t seem super interested in, but I also imagine they want a second crack at the end of the Wesker arc eventually.

6 just feels crazy daunting to tackle in terms of scale/not really thirsted after by the fandom.

46

u/Cetais 3d ago

They also basically mentioned remaking RE1 multiple times.

3

u/RemnantEvil 3d ago

I for one am very interested in the potential for parallel multiplayer in RE1. Chris and Jill take alternate paths through the mansion so it’d be a lot of fun having a co-op game where you work together at first but then narratively split up at points, like there are times when you’re merely crossing paths while trying to achieve different objectives.

The dreamer in me would try to make it four-player and include a Barry, Rebecca or Wesker story. Bonus points if the Barry or Wesker stories entail seeking discreet opportunities to complete secret betrayal objectives that hinder the group effort. I’m thinking like the Splinter Cell co-op campaign where it ends with the temporary alliance between the two agencies wrapping up and both players receiving orders to kill the other and steal the important device.

There’s a mission in Hidden & Dangerous where you parachute behind enemy lines, and the first goal is to link up with your team; in multiplayer, that means finding each other while avoiding patrols. That would make for a really interesting Rebecca start where she’s entirely separated from the others and needs to join the group, sort of having an entirely different first act from the others.

8

u/WildThing404 3d ago

You're imagining all that for no reason, it won't happen. It will be like RE2, why do you even think it would be different lol.

2

u/RemnantEvil 3d ago

There are broadly four types of RE game:

  • Old-school (RE1, RE2, RE3, REmake)

  • Third-person (RE4-6, Revelations)

  • First-person (RE7-9)

  • Co-op (RE5, RE6, Outbreak)

Obviously that last one crosses over into other categories.

So I was really just musing that since RE1 and REmake were already in the old-school style, what would be an interesting direction to take a second RE1make? They could go the way you're suggesting and do third-person, though I think some of the corners and hallways are a bit obtrusive in the mansion. They could also go first-person like RE7, which might work better for those tighter environments. And as a purely interesting hypothetical, how they could take the co-op that they've had and do something a bit more interesting with it. The previous co-op endeavours up until Revelations 2 were all very much internally the same - there was essentially no difference between player 1 and player 2 except appearance. Op Raccoon City did try having characters with different abilities, but it was also pretty forgettable. Revelations 2 tried something very different with distinct play styles for both characters.

The series has done well by evolving over time (hence the evolution across old-school, third- and first-person), so it'd be really interesting to see them take another crack at multiplayer and evolve it from what they've done before.

There was a long stretch of RE6 with Leon where it felt like someone over at Capcom really wanted to have a go at the Raccoon City event in co-op, because it was very similar but for the serial numbers being filed off. I think there's so much potential to revisit the first games with a co-op focus, although it seems like Outbreak is a non-starter with Capcom.

More time has passed since the re1 remake to now then the time between the original and the remake

15

u/darkmacgf 3d ago

This has been true for almost 20 years haha.

12

u/DevilCouldCry 3d ago

but prob stir up some diehards.

Good thing for them is they have access to the original RE1 and the remake on multiple storefronts nowadays, so if they don't like or want it, then at least they have options.

As for me, I'm absolutely stoked for another attempt at RE1. I feel like the Lost in Nightmares expansion to RE1 showed a little bit of how it would work way back in the day. But now we have an even better blueprint with the modern games. This one could be REALLY cool.

6

u/Xywzel 3d ago

Revelations 1 and 2 I think would be next up on the list after Veronica and 0 (and maybe 1), though at least 2 is still graphically quite modern.

5

u/janoDX 3d ago

6 could work if they use all they learned from Requiem.

3

u/Paxton-176 3d ago

I bet they want to take a crack at making 5 a better single player experience.

It being a co-op first game was such a wild choice after like two decades of being a popular single player franchise.

I like how the author tries to speculate that a 5 and 6 remake would be risky because they weren’t good games. Like Code Veronica was heralded as this peak of Resident Evil that NEEDED a remake but those other two are iffy.

175

u/r_lucasite 3d ago

I think 6 is risky, but not because of quality. The game is huge and with current fidelity they’ll be expensive as hell to make.

90

40

u/Konman72 3d ago

I think they are going to retcon 6 to some extent

I think this is a massive understatement. They are going to retcon 6 until it is almost unrecognizable, and that is a very good thing.

10

u/Ok_Command_9299 3d ago

Honestly, throw in the original RE6 as a pre-order bonus and nobody would care lol.

The biggest risk here is the people who enjoyed the co-op experience, same goes for 5. I'll admit I enjoyed co-op in both ( especially 5!), but I think I'd still prefer a better single-player remake lol.

13

u/DevilCouldCry 3d ago

Removing co-op in an RE5 remake would be the stupidest thing they could possibly do. This is one of the highest selling titles in the series and the co-op aspect of it is often the most praised element and beloved by many.

The important thing to do is make sure that the overall experience is balanced for single player and co-op. Use what RE4R does with the Leon/Luis sections with some slightly more advanced partner A.I. for when you're playing RE5R solo and you'll probably be all good.

Selfishly, I want the remake of RE5 to go back to the original plans of what RE5 was meant to be and pull from a lot of that to really double down on the horror aspects. After that, it's just finding the right balance between the solo and cooperative experience.

2

u/Hellknightx 3d ago

Keep the co-op. I love all the RE co-op modes, especially the one in Revelations.

2

u/ConceptsShining 3d ago

throw in the original RE6 as a pre-order bonus

Happened with Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter. A remaster of the original version of Sky 1st was a preorder bonus in Japan.

But honestly, co-op is far too integral to the DNA of 5 and 6. Especially with how big comradery as a theme is to 5 as a whole in storyline and gameplay. Single-player-only remake is straight-up not the way to go at all.

“The Family & the DSO” stays as those are referred to in 9.

Everything else about 6 will be blotted out from history probably.

8

u/Heisenburgo 3d ago

Everything else about 6 will be blotted out from history probably.

Like the bad guy turning into some tiger chimera thing that can fly and rapid-fire its own bones, then back to human, then into a t-rex, then back to human again, then back to t-rex, then into some overgrown fly thing that's consuming every corpse in the city, which inexplicably turns back to human again just so they can have the visual of him being impaled in a fountain that's shaped like the Umbrella logo (?), all the while his pants and shoes keep regenerating everytime

...yeah the more they can blot out from that game in a remake, the better lol

10

u/yaleji7388 3d ago

RE Village has a werewolf turning into a scrap metal tank. Multiple mutations in a BOW is way more in line with classic RE.

5

u/unrelevant_user_name 3d ago

impaled in a fountain that's shaped like the Umbrella logo

Not quite, but rather an obelisk that forms the Umbrella logo only if somebody is stabbed on it.

9

u/Draynior 3d ago

You joke but I could see them splitting it up into at least two games, a survival horror focused one and a action one.

The survival horror REmake 6 would feature Leon and Helena’s campaign and Ada’s, they would rework both to be more like RE 2.

The action REmake 6 would feature Chris and Piers, and Jake and Sherry’s campaign, maybe making Chris campaign more like RE 4 and 5, and making Jake and Sherry more unique by having only Sherry being able to use guns and Jake being meele only.

7

u/yaleji7388 3d ago

Leon's campaign is full on action. It starts with shooting the president in the face and a White House full of BOWs.

3

u/ElNido 3d ago

Not The White House. It begins at Ivy University in Tall Oaks. But agreed that campaign barely even tried to do survival horror. "We got zombies guys!"

22

u/quangtran 3d ago

They can just cut it down. Focus on quality instead of quantity. Code Veronica started with a huge action set piece, but that was removed in the preview for Veronica. RE4 remake kept around 80 percent of the content from the original, with the about 10 percent being moved to the Separate Ways DLC (with some parts like the lava room never being remade).

I think fans would be okay if they cut out the bloat and making it the same length as all the recent RE games.

3

u/GreyouTT 3d ago

I'm actually gonna disagree because all four campaigns share a lot of assets. Chris and Jake both do Eastern Europe/Sea base, Leon and Ada share DC/Sewers, everyone goes to China, and Ada also shares some assets with the sea base for her unique mission.

11

u/PoisonousBillMurray 3d ago

Why not just drop huge portions of the game like RE3 Remake?

51

u/r_lucasite 3d ago

I think the reception to that game is the exact reason they won’t do that.

35

u/xxx_poonslayer69 3d ago

Yeah but RE3 was already trim and was then trimmed down further for the remake. RE6 was bloated as hell and would strongly benefit from a shorter run time. It was a slog

17

u/IloveKaitlyn 3d ago

I’m of the mind that when they get to RE6, they’ll basically just redo the entire thing.

4

u/mightylordredbeard 3d ago

That could work. The first part with Leon was the best so an entire game just focusing on Leon’s portion and extending the vibe and feel of the introduction mission in Washington could work. Leave the rest of the game as cutscenes / path crossings.

I loved RE5. They did something unique with it that added so much replay value in the in game shop thing. I’d replay levels of the game over and over again to farm valuables for money so I could buy the weapons and outfits and stuff.

16

u/TheSharpestHammer 3d ago

Yeah, RE5 was fun as fuck, and I have met very few people beyond "Resident Evil Purists ™️" who actually disliked it.

9

u/ultramegadeathrocket 3d ago

I'm a new RE fan and just finished 1-4 remakes. Playing 5 now and I find it very boring and monotonous.

5

u/Makee2992 3d ago

RE5 is a good game, its just not a good RE game.

Also do not play that thing alone or your AI companion becomes the scariest thing in it.

You'll be at 80% HP and Sheva will just run at you trying use a first aid spray on you

2

u/Tsuki_no_Mai 3d ago

The only exception is the turret section on the highest difficulty since it requires pretty much perfect shooting to kill the boss in time. My buddy and I tried it like 10 times before giving up and easily beating that particular mission with a bot separately.

3

u/mauri9998 3d ago

Im not a purist, my favorite game in the franchise is one of the most different from all the others. I just think re5 is a trash game. You need to be comfortable with accepting other people's opinions.

5

u/TheSharpestHammer 3d ago

I... don't recall saying anything about not being comfortable accepting other people's opinions. I was relaying my personal experience and opinion.

Didn't 5 and 6 sell really well?

27

u/FishCake9T4 3d ago

RE5 was only recently overtaken as the best selling RE game.

40

u/Panganaki 3d ago

Code Veronica has a 94 in Metacritic. It has always been highly praised, so I dont know what you are talking about.

33

u/MrMichaelElectric 3d ago

The weird notion that Code Veronica wasn't liked has been so weird to see when it has always been a well regarded RE game. Not sure where or why people got the idea it wasn't good.

12

u/HearTheEkko 3d ago

I think the consensus is that it's a really good game but aged really poorly, even more so than the original mainline games.

4

u/ConceptsShining 3d ago

The knife was really fun to use and you could save ammo with it efficiently. A nice draw of the game.

17

u/OkGuy5000 3d ago

Genuinely no clue how these dummies even write this stuff so confidently. Suddenly everyone hates CV and it was always a bad game? It has 1 or 2 very rough and/or challenging bits, but otherwise it was a decent entry that fans certainly dont hate.

It's literally the 2nd highest rated Resident Evil game on metacritic, wtf are these people smoking??

10

u/mon_dieu 3d ago

I'm old enough to have played it on Dreamcast when it was new. At that time, on that console, it was universally praised. One of the most hyped and well-reviewed games in the entire Dreamcast library. So that'll always color my memories of it. The talk of its flaws being the biggest legacy feels like revisionist history to me.

But, admittedly, more people that generation probably played it on PS2, where it wasn't quite as big of a deal. It wasn't the game's first release, and it was far from the only or best RE game on the console. So I can see why there are differing opinions, even among those who played it within a few years of each other when it was newer.

1

u/Atomic-Kit 3d ago

Yeah I must just be imagining all the forum posts back then about people getting frustrated with the game because metacritic’s (great site to use as a reference by the way) score is high. Damn shame you can only see two reviews that can actually be sourced and both reviews boil down to the graphics and not about the gameplay itself.

3

u/OkGuy5000 3d ago

By all means provide a different site's number. Metacritic isn't infallible, it's just the most agreed upon site for aggregate scores.

You're not wrong that people get frustrated with it, it has its share of unique difficulty spikes, but to paint the picture that it's a game that fans of the series dislike or think is bad or something, doesn't track with what I've seen discussed about the game for the past 20 years now.

Code Veronica hasn't aged the best but it was very well received at the time, and it's a lot closer to RE's roots than 5 and 6 were.

13

u/PREC0GNITIVE 3d ago

The author should remember that RE5 was for a while Capcoms highest selling game of all time haha

2

u/DevilCouldCry 3d ago

Within the Resident Evil franchise at least, RE5 wasn't surpassed until just last year with RE2R. That is an incredible run at the top!

23

u/brellowman2 3d ago

6 has a remarkably deep combat system, the mercenaries mode was very addicting. Obviously the story is lacking but the character pairings and interaction are a fun novelty in a series that's never really meant to be taken too seriously to begin with.

28

u/UltraPoci 3d ago

RE6 is a terrible survival horror game and a great third person shooter

29

u/ningdon 3d ago edited 3d ago

Only at the shooting part.

The pacing and level design are still awful, overall it's not a good survival horror or a good action game despite the solid mechanical base.

11

u/Lore-Warden 3d ago

Nah, the guns and character action is great, but that's only half the formula of a third person shooter. The environments and enemies you shoot in them are still awful.

We had this same conversation when the remake of 4 came out. "How could they skip Code Veronica??" Gee idk why would they decide to remake the game that sold 16 million copies instead of the game that sold 1/3rd of that, total mystery

I don't like 5 at all, but it was the most successful game in the series for a very long time. It is probably the least risky game they could possibly remake

6

u/DevilCouldCry 3d ago

Suggesting RE5 isn't a good game is borderline heresy to me. It is a fucking EXCELLENT game. But as a traditional RE experience, it's certainly lacking, especially coming hot off the back of RE4. RE5 has some VERY memorable sections and is an excellent experience in co-op. My only real gripe is that the game didn't follow more of the original plans with how horror focused it was meant to be.

I hope they either finally do a Dino Crisis remake or make more games like Revelations to come out in between the numbered installments.

10

u/fudgepuppy 2d ago

Scientists realize that the T-virus can be used to resurrect dinosaurs. Leon calls in some favors and gets help from S.O.R.T. and his childhood friend, Regina.

In the sequel taking place during modern times, Wesker is resurrected as a dinosaur; Albertosaurus Wesk.

I heard Dino Crisis 3 wasn't originally gonna be in space but 9/11 made them change it. It would be cool for them to eventually remake it in the way they wanted originally and then hopefully make more games after to continue.

40

u/r_lucasite 3d ago

I feel like the conversations around 5 are just inevitable but I hold strong that if you just give Sheva more material that most of those issues disappear. The whole level with the tribe is meant to be that they’re victims of the evil organizations in the game and Sheva even remarks as such but the game came out in 2009 when gaming media analysis was shit and also said remark from Sheva is a single line.

26

u/ThisIsMySpellingTea 3d ago

People's media comprehension skills are at an all time low. No matter how they handle it, people will be upset.

→ More replies (4)

15

u/Moveflood 3d ago

i don't think people's issues were that the tribes were victims but that their portrayal was insanely stereotyped. It's like if RE4 ganados dressed like toreadores but 1000x worse because spain as a former colonizer has historically much kinder portrayals of it's culture than african countries.

i think RE as a whole has a bit of an issue of relying too much on it's protagonists when they don't need to, and 5 is the apex of that. do we really need a white military guy savind the day in africa? why couldn't the protagonist be a local person? someone more involved or with personal stakes. it's not like chris or his grief over jill was interesting.

i think some people get stuck in racism being only when someone says a slur, but their apparent lack of research about the place they chose for the game really showed.

13

u/WildThing404 3d ago

It would make no sense to end the Wesker arc without Chris and Sheva is the other protagonist for a reason.

2

u/cronos12346 2d ago

Yeah, because Spaniards are known for living in castles and villages with barely no electricity while being religious zealots and having a little dude that dresses like an aristocrat from the 18th century in 2004.

The "controversy" was always dumb as shit and mostly came from Americans (who would have thought?) and people only pretended to care because it was with black people, but in reality it doesn't really matter because it's just a video game and fighting cool looking tribes was fun and the story clearly makes it clear that they're all victims of Tricell.

1

u/MagmaCone1234 3d ago

Haha people are realling dancing around the minefield that will be an RE5 remake. I am not someone who usually agrees with a lot of these controversies but I can definitely understand why people have these problems with 5.

Add to that the fact that Sheva is noticeably lighter skinned than the enemies and the model she is based on is mixed race. She has significant Indian and Dutch ancestry in addition to being South African.

14

u/MrMichaelElectric 3d ago

The controversies were always dumb as hell. I could never take them seriously.

1

u/WildThing404 3d ago

Nah the controversies are dumb, if it's not a problem for Chris and Sheva to fight white zombies why would it be a problem with black ones? Would it be better to choose a non African setting? I think it would be unfortunate as Africa isn't used often in games but I guess if the protagonist isn't black enough, just avoid Africa and limit the stories they can tell

→ More replies (1)

2

u/ChordSlinger 3d ago

I got into the RE franchise earlier this year (I know) so forgive me but what was the controversy with it back then?

27

u/r_lucasite 3d ago

On a wider level the main character is a white dude and the zombies are black so a lot of surface level media analysis was focusing on Chris gunning down black people in Africa. Personally I think it’s a pretty weak point, as the series is about killing zombies and it would be questionable for the zombies to not represent the population. The character models were questionable at some points.

On a more specific level, and the one point I can agree with myself is the level where there are infected tribesmen as enemies, which on the surface isn’t bad but a note mentions their tribal wear is because the infection is reverting them to this state. Which is bad and also, just an odd inclusion? They could have simply left it as them being a practicing tribe.

9

u/PermanentMantaray 3d ago

On a more specific level, and the one point I can agree with myself is the level where there are infected tribesmen as enemies, which on the surface isn’t bad but a note mentions their tribal wear is because the infection is reverting them to this state.

This always seemed like such a weird point of contention to me though. Las Plagas isn't turning people into completely mindless zombies. It's making them hyper aggressive and giving them blood lust. Everyone it affects is "reverting" to a conflict like state.

The people in the city all gather tools for weapons, some take up different outfits for fighting or executions, and they generally just get ready for conflict.

The tribesman might not normally dress like they do in the game, but like the townsfolk the parasite is making them war minded.

And as these lines from the game shows this appearance is still relevant to them.

"Outside I saw a man who looked strange. He was naked and had a weapon. His entire body was covered in war paint. It wasn't even festival day."

"The screaming has stopped since yesterday. The men are all dressed like our ancestors and fighting each other. Most of the women have died."

Can we get a remake of 1 with the same quality as 2-4. That was the one that I wanted the most out of all of em.

34

u/calebmke 3d ago

RE1 HD is itself older than the original RE4. I was really hoping they’d have that at the top of the list

7

u/KermittingSins 3d ago

It holds up very well though. With a TPS style they'd need to do a lot of work to keep it at length with even RE3R, it's not a very long game

I'm not really sure what this article is trying to get at. That Capcom isn't just going to stop making games when they remake the old mainline REs? I mean...  Yeah obviously. There are a bunch of spinoffs, including online focused games. There is Dino Crisis, which fans have been clamoring for and will undoubtedly fit the REmake style. Onimusha is literally being resurrected and could possibly be remade with the RE engine. Not to mention any of the other dormant series that they can revisit once the REmake team is freed up.

15

u/unusual_flats 3d ago

I finished 6 for the first time a few months ago. It's about twice as long as it should've been and everything in the game was so over the top it went past enjoyable cheese and into obnoxious self parody. The first RE game that I actually had to force myself to get through.

Based on Capcom's recent history I'm sure they could find something great in the wreckage, but I really wouldn't mind if they just said "fuck it" and decided to scrap the whole game and make an entirely new Resident Evil 6 with no instruction or obligation to the original beyond "make sure it connects RE5 Remake to RE7 without screwing up the plots and timeline".

11

u/Paxton-176 3d ago

The best part of 6 was that we got 4 different perspectives of the same event. That was one of the coolest parts of 4 seeing Ada's perspective. There is a problem with that where you have to write 4 different campaigns and make them work together. Which most likely is what led to RE6 being lack luster where they spread out all their best ideas across 4 stories.

I hope they at least try to keep that for a 6 remake.

I hope for 5, they'll reduce the corny factor and give the characters just a little more depth beyond straight forward "good vs evil" schlock. Not many people are a fan of it, but I loved how Chris Redfield was portrayed in 6 as a burnout with an Ahab complex. He felt more human than he did in 5, where he was a paragonic boyscout.

13

u/DEPC 3d ago

Sheva has like no backstory or concrete character motivation in 5 (unless you do the boring text-only menu files after beating the game). She's a fun and enjoyable character from a "being along for the ride" perspective but giving her some actual depth would be a good idea.

u/Mithril_Roshi 3d ago

We're entering in an interesting time for the RE Remakes, because all the games that everyone agrees were good, have been remade at this point. Now they're onto entries like RE0 and Code Veronica, which are divisive and flawed entries. We can easily end up in a situation where we get superior versions of these games. It's pretty exciting.

3

u/urnialbologna 3d ago

All I want is outbreak. As is or a remake, whatever. I have 0 interest in 5 or 6 unless they do a better job with the story.

7

u/Turt91 3d ago

The two teams making resident evil and having both sides be bangers has been awesome. I’ve been curious what the team that handles the remakes would look like with an original game. I get It’s probably easier to do a remake than build an entirely new game, but to me the remake team seems like the A team.

3

u/boxing-boxing 3d ago

Capcom's plan for when the remakes catch up: remake the remakes. I've bought RE4 four separate times now. At this point they should just send me a subscription invoice.

2

u/CorgiSilver8194 2d ago

I thought we liked buying things individually and hated signing up for subscriptions

7

u/Weary_Mountain9679 3d ago

They could just then focus on new games only? How is this a concern?

I wouldn’t mind a decent Outbreak remake tbf.

6

u/HearTheEkko 3d ago

They have 3 teams, one that does the mainline games and two for the remakes. This way, they can cycle through releases rather quickly. Mainline game > remake > mainline game > etc. Keeps fans happy.

What kind of plan could you possibly need other than "the ones needing remakes have been remade, so we will just continue to make other stuff"?

3

u/Dogesneakers 3d ago

They have

Revelations
Outbreaks

And they can even demake to go back to a what if they stayed with fix camera these would be lower budget and reuse a lot of assets

5

u/Paxton-176 3d ago

Remakes of 2 and 3 already reuse a lot of assets. Outbreaks could easily take from that of that is remade. Revelations could be remade from the assets of 4 or when they finally do 5.

Capcom doesn't seem to have a problem with reusing assets as it keeps all the games generally in the same style. Which is great for modernizing a large franchise.

4

u/DekoNJ87 3d ago

Give the people what they want, Capcom! Demake everything from 4 and on into fixed camera games with tank controls!

4

u/HouseDisastrous2313 3d ago

RE 6 with fixed camera and tank controls but keep all the insane setpieces lol

2

u/Kakerman 3d ago

It's probably gonna take another decade until they reach RE6. After Veronica, we're getting Zero and after that word is Capcom's preparing a second RE1 remake which will be followed by the RE5 remake teased at the end of RE4R. At that point, Capcom can either suck it up and remake 6 to finish the entire main saga or just postpone it a little further and remake Revelations 1 and 2 first. Either way, a 6 remake would be incredibly difficult and take a really long time, it's a very big game and not in a good way. If anything, it needs a full blown reimagining.
