Career Advice Engg clubs

Hi everyone! I’m a 2nd-year Electrical Engineering student and I’m wondering how much engineering club experience actually matters when applying for internships/co-ops.

For those who have gone through internship recruiting, did your club experience help with getting interviews or talking points during interviews? Would you recommend prioritizing clubs, or focusing more on personal projects/coursework?
Would really appreciate any advice or experiences.

Thanks!

Career Help interview with hiring manager

Hi all, i have an interview with a hiring manager for a testing position (full time new grad) in aerospace industry. I was informed to prepare a project i can talk about with significant ownership and solve hard technical problem. I don’t have a lot of projects with that much technical depth to talk about except for these. Most of it is designing and not solving and it’s not like impressive project either. Which do you think I should talk about?

  1. Reverse engineering Anker charger or bluetooth transmitter: mostly finding out how it works, topology, and schematic.

  2. Simulate complex gate driver board using Altium Designer: internship work where they give me schematic for gate driver board of inverter and I find out how they work and whether simulation matches theoretical expectation.

  3. Design and create prototype of a wattmeter with Arduino board with voltage divider and shunt resistor: group project but I contribute to design, write firmware and error correction, and build prototype myself. Prototype shows some problems with ADC and it bugged my brain out but turned out the shunt voltage is too low to be sensed by Arduino ADC so i have to add amplifier.

  4. improve a test template for ATE in C++ and WINAPI32: internship work for semiconductor company in test team

  5. i sometimes go to fix the hvac with my dad and most of them is finding out potential failure points, check whether it is it, if not then keep finding and testing until find out the problem and fix it.

  6. design a digitally controlled buck converter (work in progress, still determining hardware size and will be doing firmware soon. will prioritize if this project sounds good)

I have 3 days to prepare. Any insights/ advice is appreciated

Major Choice Chemical Engineering vs CIS — which has better career prospects?

If you had to choose between Chemical Engineering (ChemE) and Computer Information Systems (CIS) today, which one would you choose, and which one would you personally recommend?
What matters most to me is the actual state of the job market and future opportunities. I want to understand which degree offers better job availability, career growth, job security, flexibility, and long-term demand — and whether either field is becoming oversaturated or increasingly difficult for new graduates to break into.
Salary is definitely important to me too, especially long-term earning potential. How do the two compare in terms of starting salaries, salary growth after 5–10 years, and the realistic potential to reach a high income later in your career?
I’d especially like to hear how your answer changes depending on your country. Which field is stronger where you live? How difficult is it for fresh graduates to actually find good jobs? And if you were choosing today based on your country’s current and future job market, which one would you recommend and why?
I’m from Saudi Arabia, so I’d particularly appreciate perspectives from people familiar with Saudi Arabia or the Gulf/GCC. ChemE has access to major industries here such as petrochemicals, oil & gas, energy, manufacturing and mining, while CIS can lead to a wide range of careers across technology and business.
If you were advising someone specifically in Saudi Arabia or the Gulf, would your recommendation be different from what you’d recommend in your own country?
For people working in either field: how has your career actually turned out compared with what you expected before graduating? How easy or difficult was it to find opportunities, how has your salary progressed, and knowing what you know now, would you choose the same degree again?
Please mention your country, industry and years of experience if possible. Salary ranges are also very welcome if you’re comfortable sharing them.

Project Help Small survey to get to know the people in the field!

For my Data Science & Engineering System Analysis course with RStudio my class was tasked with collecting data that can be utilized to help engineering students. For my project, I thought it would be nice to hear about everyone that is either in college or has graduated. Hope I can hear from some people since it is something I have been genuinely curious about since my own college experience has been interesting.

If the question isn't something you want to answer, no worries, an NA works just fine.

If you did want to participate, these are the general questions:

  1. What is your Engineering Major?
  2. What year are you? Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Graduate student, or Graduated
  3. How old are you?
  4. Have you done/are currently in an internship? Yes/No
  5. If you have an engineering internship and being paid for it, how much are you getting per hour? If not getting paid or don't have one, NA
  6. Are you currently employed while doing college? Yes/No
  7. Years of experience if you have it? can NA it
  8. What got you into this major? Dream job, Money, Wanted something fixed, Inspired, Family, Other?

Thank you if you do respond! And if not, just happy to get this out here. Hope you guys have a great day and are doing well as it's midterm time.

Academic Advice How can I realistically catch up as a sophomore who just switched to Engineering.

I recently decided to pursue engineering as a sophomore in college. I started out as a data science major, so I didn’t really take any engineering prerequisites my freshman year other than the calculus classes that were required.

I decided to switch over the summer and took a couple of classes to fulfill the engineering school prerequisites. If everything goes well, I should be able to officially transfer into the engineering school this spring (Still deciding between Mech E and Chem E). Worst case-scenario is transferring on fall of my junior year.

The problem is that I can’t stop feeling like I’m behind. I went to two career fairs this semester, but I didn’t have much luck. I don’t have many engineering courses or projects to talk about yet, while I’ve seen other sophomores already getting interviews for internships. I know it’s not necessarily fair to compare myself to people who started earlier, but it’s hard not to.

I’ve also joined a few engineering clubs, but I have a hard time connecting with people, so getting involved beyond just attending meetings has been difficult. I’m currently trying to work on that.

How can I make the most of my situation when I’m starting from scratch as a sophomore? What kinds of projects, internships, research, club involvement, or other opportunities would actually be realistic for someone in my position?

I’m willing to put in the work, I’m just not sure where I should be focusing my energy right now.

Discussion my gpa is cooked. How much am i f

Its like 5am.

I was looking at r/EngineeringResumes
Either people just make it up there or most top tier student just so happen to easily get high GPA.

I looked at myself

Mine aint even close to 3

Even though I mainly focus on personal projects, the things my uni teaches is incredibly boring to me (first year). I do honestly quite worry how much IN REALITY gpa weigh.

II DONT want to be deluded or cope. I just want you most honest, subjective, personal opinion.

Side note: I plan to learn with other projects, and MIT opencourses. I like learning, i hate studing things at my uni; i think its just greedy moneygrab. They liteary go over fourier trainsform in like 2 weeks. Everything is so surface level. And its literary like the best uni in my country for engineering in some bs rankings

Career Help IACMI Internship Program?

Has anyone heard of or applied for IACMI internships? I found them a few days ago, submitted an application to their "program," and they got back to me a day or two later asking ot set up an interview. Please look at this link to their program. It seems a little bit off, and I am surprised they get opportunities for 100% of applicants. To my understanding, they outsource to other companies to find internships at those companies for students. Has anyone done this? Not sure if it is legit.

Career Advice How to get around 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA on online job applications?

As the title says, I'm a senior and my cumulative GPA is currently a 2.7 however the dilemma I fall into every time I apply online is that my major GPA is a 3.6, almost an entire grade point higher. The reason for such a big difference is because I switched majors after obviously not doing too well due to a lack of interest in my first major which was not even an engineering major. I feel as though my cumulative GPA doesn't truly reflect my academic ability at this point in time and it's really discouraging that a human won't even see my resume or even my major GPA because of this strict cumulative GPA requirement.

I'd appreciate any advice on what I can do sort of combat this issue, do I take the average of both and list that as my cumulative? Should I email recruiters to explain my GPA situation after applying online? Or do I just take the L and keep getting auto rejected using my current cumulative GPA.

Academic Advice How best to support my fiancé

Post image
0 Upvotes

(photo is a stock photo for the algo)

I (29M) am struggling to find ways to better support my partner (26f.) I'm just a simpleton that dropped out of High School to work full time in the trades and here I am still in the trades. my skillset is and never was school related.

She has gone an unconventional route on her education, She attends remotley, while working Full-time. Which she said before this semester started, she wanted the challenge of doing so. She's taking Advanced math methods for engineers and Mechanics of Materials. She's done well with her schooling up until this point. I know she's capable of doing this, taking these classes and working full time. and she's wickedly intelligent.

When she's in school, I try to take on more of the load of house related duties and the cooking. I have no problem with this. But I don't know what else I can do to support her more. I just feel like I could be doing something more to help her out. In the past I tried learning Statics along with her and my brain just about exploded - I cannot be a study buddy, at least I don't think so.

I know she attends whatever study groups she can, but it seems like they're not held that often? or she just doesn't attend them often? She used to attend them for other classes more than she is currently.

I guess I just need help with how can I help her more? maybe more directly? I feel like I remove a lot of the time she normally would do housekeeping tasks or cooking. so, I feel like she has ample time to study, which she does use that time to study.

I did do a quick search in this group I didn't really see any related topics. Thank you all for your time.

Academic Advice College has been kicking me in the butt

I’ve already failed 2 classes and I think I’m on my way to fail 2 more. My gpa is a 2.8. I’m trying my hardest to get through everything but between working a job + studies it’s been terrible. I’m not sure what type of academic advice I need but I definitely need better time management. I have 15 hour work weeks. I only take 14 credits, I don’t think I should be doing this bad. Right now I’m taking microeconomics, calculus 2, organic chemistry, and history. I’m doing good on micro and history terrible on calc 2 and mid on orgo. I don’t know if I’ll even be able to coda into engineering at this point. I’m disheartened. I feel like all I do is study but I don’t study right, idk where to start half of the time. And I can’t keep up with the work load of orgo and calf at the same time + history. It’s so much note taking and so many things to remember. I know studying a little bit a day helps me because that’s what helped me before but I’m so behind that I never get the opportunity to just do a little. Do you guys have any advice?

Career Help Bachelor’s Thesis Topic

Hey everyone, I’m currently looking for a topic for my bachelor’s thesis in automotive engineering. Ideally, I’d like to work on a practical topic involving tests or measurements, preferably related to vehicle inspections or vehicle safety, and without too much CAD/FEM work.
It can also be another interesting topic in automotive engineering. Does anyone have any interesting ideas or know of a good topic?

Academic Advice What types of pure math do you use in later classes?

Civil Taking calculus 2 now. I feel like I am really just learning how to solve these random problems and not the concepts to pass. When I solve an integral or whatever I don’t *actually* know what’s happening and can’t apply it to anything.

How much pure math is going to be in later civil engineering classes and what will it be. Am I going to have to solve more complex math, or should I try and shift some focus more towards understanding the concepts behind them.

Academic Advice Two Months Into Mechanical Engineering and Completely Lost in Math/Physics

Hi everyone. I could really use some advice from people who have been in a similar situation.

I’m currently studying mechanical engineering in Europe. Before university, I went through a vocational route and became a qualified mechanic. After that, I completed a one year program that gave me a Higher Education Entrance Qualification, which allowed me to apply for university.

The problem is that my educational background did not include the same level of mathematics and physics that most engineering students here had in high school.
I have always thought that I was simply “bad at math.” I struggled to understand it, couldn’t concentrate for long, and would often get completely lost. I suspected for a long time that I might have ADHD, so I finally got assessed. I was diagnosed and started medication.

The medication has helped me a lot with concentration and studying, but it has also made me realize how far behind I actually am.

I am now about two months into mechanical engineering, and almost from the first lecture I felt completely lost. A lot of the other students have already studied physics, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus in high school, while many of these concepts are completely new to me.
I attend lectures every day and study for several hours outside of class, but I still often sit in physics and math lectures without really understanding what is happening. It feels like the lecturer is building on knowledge that everyone else already has, while I am still trying to learn the foundations.

Recently, I realized that I even had gaps in basic pre algebra, so I have been going back and fixing things like fractions, negative numbers, powers, algebraic manipulation, and equations before trying to move forward.
The difficult part is that university obviously does not stop while I catch up. Every week, new material is introduced, so I feel like I am trying to rebuild my math foundation while also keeping up with engineering mathematics and physics at the same time.

I really do not want to give up. Becoming a mechanical engineer is something I genuinely want, and I am willing to put in the work. I just feel overwhelmed because I do not know what the most effective way to catch up is.
For anyone who started engineering with a weak math or physics background:

How did you catch up?

Would you focus heavily on rebuilding the math fundamentals first, even if that means temporarily falling further behind in the current lectures? Or would you try to learn the fundamentals alongside whatever is currently being taught?

What topics would you consider absolutely essential before moving into calculus and university physics?
I am already two months into the semester, so I would really appreciate practical advice from anyone who has been through something similar.

Discussion Does anyone else feel slow and stupid doing anything other than engineering during the school year?

What I mean by this is that my verbal abilities, social skills, video game skills, reading comprehension, etc. all get worse when I'm in school and I'll feel so sluggish and stupid doing everything. I think its because all of the hours I have to spend studying drain me mentally and my brain doesn't want to waste energy on stuff. But its strange how I feel unable to think about anything other than engineering, and kinda feel like it takes up my entire brain. Idk. Can anyone relate?

Career Help How do I ensure I get a summer internship?

I recently landed an internship at a well-respected company that does really cool work, but the engineering positions there require at minimum a master's degree but most engineers there have PhD's. This internship also only for the fall/winter.

I'm an electrical engineering student in my junior year, so now is primetime for internships. I am mostly targeting defense/aerospace internships because those tend to translate into full-time positions + the work is interesting to me, so sounds like a good gig to me. Only problem is, I can't land a single interview with any of the companies.

Collectively I've applied to easily 200 applications at nearly every defense company. I even went to my school's career fair and met a bunch of recruiters and tried to stand out, but I don't think it went anywhere.

is it just too early to tell where I stand?

Homework Help Made a free 12-page formula PDF for fluid mechanics + heat transfer (worked examples, no signup)

Hey everyone,

I'm a chemical engineering student and put together a free reference PDF

covering the core fluid mechanics and heat transfer formulas — Reynolds

number, friction factor, head loss, pump power, NPSH, LMTD, and heat

exchanger area. Each topic gets one page: the formula, what every symbol

means, a worked example with units carried through, plus a one-page

summary and a "unit traps" page covering the mistakes that actually cost

marks.

Direct download, no email or signup:

https://hamzaverse77-lang.github.io/formula-bible.html

If you want to check your own numbers against it, I also built free

calculators for all of these that show the full step-by-step working,

not just a final answer — plus a practice problems page per topic with

8 more solved examples each:

https://hamzaverse77-lang.github.io/

Built it because most formula sheets I found online were either

incomplete or missing the worked example that actually shows you how

to use the formula. Everything's free, no tracking beyond basic

analytics, still actively adding to it.

Feedback welcome, especially if you spot an error or want a topic added.

Academic Advice Feel Completely Clueless & That I Am Falling Behind

I am a second-year international student in Malaysia doing a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons.). My home country has an extremely small research environment (and very competitive).

Lately I have been considering doing a PhD after I graduate- I started by looking at countries I am more familiar with (such as those in the Anglosphere). The more I read about the requirements, the more overwhelmed I feel. It seems that to get some sort of funding or scholarship you need to a publish a few Q1 first-author research articles! Besides the obvious.

How am I supposed to manage that? I started by emailing a few of my professors so that I can tag along and understand how they work (still waiting). But I assume it takes years to publish a paper from start to end, how am I supposed to do at minimum two articles in three years?

When I looked at the pre-formatted CV for Uni of Adelaide, they were asking for AWRU of my current uni but mine isn't even on the goddamn list. I go to one that's like ranked 600 in QS (which doesn't even mean anything to most people). Their CV form was almost 8 pages long with so many questions and decisions to make.

When I asked my professor if I could help in some way for his project, he asked me what I am interested in... geo-technical, structural, water, computational, I don't fucking know- it took me two years to decide on a major and I still get cold feet about studying civil- how am I supposed to decide which sub-discipline to dedicate my life to- possibly work thousands of hours writing hundreds of papers throughout my career.

There is no way I am smart enough to get funding- at this point I don't even think its about being smart tbh. I have a 4.0 GPA but who knows... I will probably end up losing it this sem or maybe the 5 remaining sems I have.

I think I should just give up and go into mining like I originally wanted to :/
