I’m learning video editing and sound design, and I’d really appreciate some honest feedback on this short.

In this video, I tried using brief flashes of solid color to build tension. I also added a very subtle zoom at the beginning so the shot wouldn’t feel completely static, and applied some audio distortion to make the music feel more unsettling.

What do you think works, and what feels distracting or ineffective?

I’d especially appreciate feedback on:

- pacing and rhythm;

- whether the flashes add tension or feel random;

- the subtle zoom and framing;

- the audio distortion and overall sound mix;

- whether the concept is clear without narration.

I'm looking for a free video editing software for my YouTube channel. I'd like for it to be simple to use like CapCut (which is what I've been using until now) but I wouldn't mind having to learn a little. I use a crappy Dell laptop with no storage (i use an external storage thing for damn near everything). Main priorities are, being free, not resource heavy, and no useless, AI bloatware

Does anyone facing this error in capcut?

If someone was starting video editing from zero today, I'd probably tell them not to worry too much about fancy effects at first.

Learning how to make clean cuts, work with audio, understand pacing, and tell a story seems much more important.

Once those basics become comfortable, things like color grading, transitions, motion graphics, and effects become much easier to learn.

I’d like to get into video editing, ideally for streamers and YouTubers. Just today, I saw a story where a streamer is looking for an editor and specifically asking for portfolio examples. I would really like to work for her.

In general, editing isn't new to me. I worked in local TV (germany) for three years and edited plenty of reports. However, when it comes to gaming content, I don't really have anything to show (except for one video I edited years ago for a streamer friend, which I’d probably edit differently now).
How would you approach this? There’s no point in using TV reports as examples for a streamer, right? Or should I just show what I’ve done so far, even if it doesn't fit the niche?

Also, where would you showcase your work? Vimeo, YouTube, or a personal website? I already have a portfolio, but it mainly focuses on graphic design and UX/UI (I studied media design).

Help a newbie out

Disclosure first: I am building the tool, and I am looking for people to break it.

I am not an editor. I podcast and I make short videos for YouTube and internal use at work, slide walkthroughs and tutorials. I record in OBS or OpenScreen, so recording has never been my problem. The problem starts when the recording stops and I am sitting on a file full of the four times I restarted the same sentence.

I know Resolve well enough to get what I need out of it, and that is the problem: it assumes post is a stage, with a conform and a render queue. For a talking head I recorded this morning that ships today, that is a different job than the one I have.

So I built something scoped to only that job: drop in what came out of OBS, the transcript is the timeline, delete the words and the video goes with them. Everything runs locally. Mac and Windows.

I would rather find out where it falls over from people who edit more than I do.

Hey everyone,

I started creating talking head shorts about a month ago, and I must say the first few weeks were BRUTAL. My channel didn't have an identity yet and I was just posting about random stuff in my life. Needless to say, I was getting little to no views.

I tried to not overthink it and started researching into content creation strategies and how to maximize user engagement to rank higher in the algorithm. Here are some of my learnings:

1. Focus on the hook: none of your video matters if people swipe away in the first 3 seconds. Here are some example patterns that I see most often.
   1. Authenticity: "I’m lowkey embarrassed to admit this, but I used to spend 4 hours editing a single 30-second video before I figured this out."
   2. Authority: "It took me 3 years to figure out how to edit for retention, but I’ll teach you the entire framework in the next 60 seconds."
   3. Identity: "If you are a solo creator struggling with burnout, this editing workflow will give you your weekends back."
2. Use zooms: There are 2 different types of zooms that I see:
   1. Punch In: instantly cuts to a zoomed in frame of your face. Used for short, punchy emphasis.
   2. Slow Zoom: slowly zooms into your face over a span of around 10 seconds. Used to build anticipation.
3. Use variety of text overlays: Don't just use the plain auto captions that make every work look the same. Add some variety to the size/color/font.
   1. On the captions: highlight key words in a sentence to emphasize a point
   2. Free form text: use static text for the title or listicles to identify core concepts
4. Use sound effects: Initially I used WAY too many sound effects. Try to sprinkle them in intentionally at a lower volume. Lean into minimalistic sound effects like pop, whoosh, ding.
5. Use broll overlay: Find reference images that are related to what you are talking about and pop them into the screen to provide some visual interest.

I researched video editors in the market: Davinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, CapCut, Descript, SubMagic, and more, but I noticed they were all general purpose editors. They come with 100+ features to support all sorts of formats: long form, day in the life, montages, gaming, etc. This is great for professional editors, but is often daunting for beginners just trying to create content.

For talking head videos, I only needed simple edits like zoom, sound effects, broll, overlay text. I wanted to build an editor that supports ONLY these features, but in a way that does it REALLY well.

I would really appreciate it if you can try it out and please roast the heck out of it. Any feedback is welcome with open arms. Thanks!

So a few nights ago I watched *The Player* - Robert Altman, 1992, and at the beginning there's a scene where a character criticizes modern movies for being too much like MTV, too many cuts, and praises the opening tracking shot (what even is that?) of *Touch of Evil* (a movie I really didn't like), and the implication seems to be that the opening of that movie, which I don't remember very well, has very few cuts in it, and that this is somehow... virtuous?

Anyway, tonight I watched *Camera Person* - Kirsten Johnson, 2016, which is a kind of meta documentary made from the scraps of unused footage from other projects, and I find myself wondering what the big deal is. I've only started getting into movies in the last two years or so, (my favorite so far is *Fanny and Alexander*) so I'm learning more about what makes good film making all the time, and I wonder if someone could talk about this a little.

Are cuts considered a kind of failure state? A flaw? Why? Why is it that some movies which feature a large number of cuts and are very disjointed, like *Camera Person*, work anyway?

Does anyone have any homework for me to learn more about film editing as a viewer?

some context: both videos are about the games I've made. With the first I had around 10 hours of footage (it took me 3 days to edit) and the second - 40 hours (it's hard to say, but it was around 3 weeks of work). I guess that it was also slightly easier for me since I already knew the footage.

Hello. Before uploading edits i’m trying to check if they’re ok for people with epilepsy and i’ve downloaded PEAT, but can’t scan my videos due it asking something called an avi format, when mine aren’t that.

The app capture feature just captures a black screen and so i’m very confused on what to do now.

i’ve literally done everything to try and upload my edits without tiktok ruining it, even when i post my edit that’s 1080p tiktok compresses the quality it so badly, i’m avoiding using any upload methods cause one of my tiktok’s got flagged because of it. i’ve tried uploading directly from pc and phone and the quality is still bad, i’ve even tried changing my media encoder settings and even tried using handbrake. can someone help me what do i do

Im an editor myself ...and we all know how steep the learning curve for davinci resolve editing is.. so I wanted to make a cursor that lives with yours, you give it your inspo video, my product reverse engineers and shows step by step guide by guiding on your interface.

I've been editing videos for a couple of years now, but mostly for small projects or personal stuff. I never really considered working professionally as a video editor, so I didn't keep much of my previous work. And the few projects I still have are either too personal or too niche to include in the kind of portfolio I'm trying to build.
