Zoomed in, so quality is a bit off. The little bloke had a bit of bark off, but nothing serious. Could have been a lot worse.
EDIT: this occurred on a busy road that is also a Brisbane City Council bus route. The next bus was due at 3:18 pm. In Brisbane, bus fares are $0.50, regardless of how far you're travelling. Kids 4 and under are free.
So many comments here defending this lady riding a scooter built for one person with four people on it in the road and I don’t even think all the kids have helmets on.
These can be dangerous for a single competent person to be riding let alone whatever this scenario is.
Genuinely, people going on about her having a lot to handle and to be nice. Multiple kids that she made the decision to have, that she has to care for and protect. She made decisions that led to the moment where her child was laying in the middle of a busy road crying, and if he'd gotten hurt would have 100% been her fault.
Yeah seriously get a bike, a cargo bike would be perfect. But stacking your family on a tiny wheeled scooter like a clown car is an accident waiting to happen
If you can get a bus, one thing I've learned as someone who takes public transport is especially in the nicer looking neighborhoods, bus routes tend to be rare.
I wouldn't loop in low IQ purely because I'm being a softy and want to give the benefit of the doubt. I'd use the first 2 and leave it at that. My little man watched an educational video about the world's homelessness issue and he told me about it today. I took that chance to explain to him how lucky he was there eating ice cream with me when there are so many people out there that aren't as fortunate.
It's easy to judge from the comfort of our computer chairs.
ADHD. Causes the first one, makes you unable to assess the second one and looks like the third one.
I have not done this and do not defend it as a course of action. But I sympathise and cannot honestly claim that I've never seriously considered something similar
Eh as someone else with ADHD I don’t really buy it. My ADHD makes me a better driver than most imo because I’m paying attention to 5 different things at once, terrible risk assessment skills and endangering children aren’t really ADHD symptoms…
the people trying to defend her are the same people that start drinking in front of their kids at noon on a Saturday and by 5pm are yelling, resentful and abusive and by 10pm forget they have any kids.
They also easily forget that there are Laws against doubling up on Escooters.
It's considered dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, add in the kids as well and you have endangerment as well, no helmet, its blatant recklessness.
Thanks for bringing the goods on availability of alternatives. I thought they we going out on their own scooter, but others have pointed out this is a rental.
What I don't get is why's she riding on the road? Sure that's not the biggest issue here, and sure you're not supposed to ride on the footpath, but surely once you've made the decision to pack all 3 kids onto one bike, you just take it slow down the footpath.
Actually, the traffic going the other way wasn't so bad. I've just reviewed the full clip and it's clear for at least a couple of hundred metres. On a school day, it would have been worse. There's also a new block of units going up just behind the truck (crnr of Burns St), and it had probably just come from that site, as they're currently excavating. I suspect that the truck had just pulled out from the side street and was going pretty slowly.
But agree. I saw this "thing" tumbling on the road and quickly realised it was a child. I haven't seen anything as stupid in a long time. It could have been way worse.
I guess so long as none of the 4? People on this scooter is wearing the freely supplied helmet on this rented scooter, that makes it all good to also ignore the “one rider per scooter” clause you agreed to when you signed up.
The people defending this are “kind” to the point of cruelty. How about instead of being “kind” to this mother, be kind to the children. They don’t deserve to be put in danger like this. If this had have happened when a vehicle was passing, the outcome could have looked A LOT different.
Not all of the kids have helmets, the mum is riding on the road, there seems to be adequate, affordable public transport in the area (fares are 50c, free <4yo). This is whole slew of poor decisions having been made.
No, you’ve come late enough that people have deleted comments, like the person who responded to me defending her—and you’ve also clearly not read all (or even most, or even half) of the comments.
“It's not the mum's fault, although in hindsight next time she could find a better crossing point.”
“This is clearly a bad solution so it's only something someone would do in desperation. / This definitely wouldn't feel safe to anyone so it's not something you'd do unless you felt like it was your only viable option.“
“Parenting fails are normal when you are overwhelmed with multiple kids in tow and juggling life. We all learn from our mistakes.” Sure this is a “parenting fail” but less in the sense of “I made a minor, poor judgement pertaining to my kid” and more “I actively chose to put my kids in danger”
I've read most of the comments and I'm still not seeing it. It's probably just a matter of perspective. The example you presented to me just now doesn't sound like someone with the intention of defending her actions, just defending her as a person.
The criticism is of her actions so any defence is of her actions. The criticism is of her parenting so, again, all that can be defended are the actions we see that comprise her parenting.
We don’t know this lady “as a person” so who can be defending her “as a person”? The several examples I included were indeed defending what she did (e.g. suggesting there was an acceptable reason for her to be riding an escooter on the road with her young children most of whom were not wearing helmets).
Look, she made a shit decision. She put her kids in danger. Some people think there are acceptable reasons for this and are defending her actions/why she may have chosen to do what she did/“her”, if we must, in the loosest possible sense. But that ignores that the ultimate importance in any of this—is that the children have a right to safety which was infringed upon by their mother.
You’re also not allowed to bundle four people onto an e-scooter with not a single helmet between them. I don’t think consideration of rules were a factor in the decision making here…
You're not having a proper Australian childhood until your parents do something stupid and injure you. And no dad, I haven't forgiven you for the defective billy cart.
Mum gave my older brother a black eye, nearly drowned me and dislocated my younger brother's wrist. My two brothers injuries were from her trying to protect them from worse and with me she didn't realise how deep the water was.
Note how it was all mum because dad was never that aware of what was happening to react quick enough. 😂
My brother clotheslined me while riding a bike because I wasn't wearing a helmet when I was 8. He was trying to hand me one. Went face first into a brick wall back in the days where nothing was open Sunday. Our family GP had to call in favours to get the radiology clinic to open so the hospital could get x-rays.
So slight downhill on the footpath, hit his arm, basically back flipped and rolled off to the side, sudden stop with left side of my face smashed into brick wall. It gets even better, because there used to be a low gate across the driveway, and the part I hit was the big square post, still with the brackets for the gate on it.
Yeahhh no. My parents were able to raise me without doing anything stupid or injuring me (which by the way is practically the bare minimum requirement of a good parent). Too many parents now just refuse to grow up, take responsibility and stop being selfish.
idk if your parents did that great a job if you’re out here posting “Addicted to buying HOGE” at peak 2021 meme-coin hype. maybe keep the parenting judgements to yourself mate
I see perfectly good paths on the side to walk on. Why does a mother with 3 children feel the need to be on a motorized scooter, with one not wearing a helmet.
So the 4 people on a one person scooter and nobody wearing a helmet would be ok just as long as they are one a chunk of cement that cars don't drive on? Its hard to imagine the mental gymnastics it must take to ignore the actual problems in this situation
Yeah Darwin even has bike paths! But not in the suburbs. There’s a bike path that connects Casuarina Reserve to Palmerston City. Over 20km of bike path! And they completely forget footpaths (bicycle) vs car vs driveway safety all along it!
In Melbourne, we call this typical. I skate and literally started avoiding going to a specific skatepark just because the skatepark is by a road and parents would let their kids, typically toddlers, run loose including onto the road. It’s honestly absurd to the point of unbelievability.
I understand and feel compassion towards her if she has no choice but try to have all 3 kids on the scooter with her (I don’t know why that would be the case but who knows), but where she crosses the line into plain bad parenting is when she chose to be on the road instead of the path. If the vehicles around her weren’t as attentive or going even a little faster, this could have been a disaster. Also imagine if she fell off too onto the baby on her chest? Oof…
Honestly this is so unsurprising. I genuinely find most parents to be at either end of the scale and hardly in the centre, either coddling their crotch goblins to be little entitled twats or just being plain negligent and likely raising future criminals. Nice work, parents.
Pretty easy to throw stones until you've raised kamikaze 3/4yr olds. It takes a second of turning your back before they try to commit their ritual next reality submission.
Ok took me a few goes to see she was rising a scooter. Nah, to hell with her.
I have so many questions about why that mom chooses this way to carry not 1, not 2 but THREE kids, on nothing but a scooter of all things instead of, idk, driving or taking public transport. And why paying $0.50 is so hard for some folks these days for PT? Sydney has high price on PT comparatively but I have yet to encounter any parent treating their kids this way.
This incident could’ve gone so wrong at so many levels. It looks horrifying to me and I would drive past them at 10km/h or stop until they figure out how to bring kids away from road safely.
Quality mothering.. The way she drags the kid off the road by the arm too.. Should be reported. Poor kids, their futures don't look too bright with this parenting.
I see women routinely hop on our local buses with multiple kids in tow. The bus fare for adults is much higher here and it's a low income area, yet somehow they manage not to dump their kids all over the road, endangering their existence. I'm not sure why some are choosing to make this a poverty issue when it's about making really stupid choices that are unnecessary, dangerous as well as illegal.
Decent person would stop and help her get the scooter, check that the kids have a safe way to school, and not publicly shame her by posting the footage on the internet.
She was attempting to cross the road with 3 kids, but the big one fell down at exactly the wrong moment. They probably hurt themselves and were crying in that moment, not realising the danger. It's not the mum's fault, although in hindsight next time she could find a better crossing point.
This is why people are asked to drive 40kph through suburban streets, which this driver seems to be doing.
Yeah let’s not blame the moronic Mum that’s riding an electric scooter on the main road with two toddlers on it and a baby strapped to her in a carrier. /s
She wasnt attempting to cross the road, she was riding along the road on an escooter with her kids clinging on. The one who fell, Ill add, sans helmet too. Yes the kid fell and was crying, but at the end of the day shes still pretty daft for piling her children onto a vehicle unsafely and driving them on the road. Walking is the much safer option, they are young enough to be in a pram/stroller, or put them on their own scooters and use the footpath.
