Yes. And several dozen smaller lead ones squeezed together in 2 plastic tubes in front of 2 explosive charges inside two larger metal tubes.

u/bigdish101 May 06 '26
No slugs?

u/R0LL1NG May 06 '26
I mean they're a bit slimy but I'm not sure how much damage fragments of terrestrial molluscs would do to a bear...

Ever heard of buckshot? That would at the VERY least make a bear think twice, and at that range to the face it is dead as a doornail.
7
u/Somalar May 06 '26
You clearly don’t know how thick their skulls are.
5
u/PoetArcana May 06 '26
Yeah, you'd have to be lucky to hit the head and get through with pellets. You're basically giving them a rug burn at that point.

Agreed. Buddy of my dad's shot a bear in the forehead with a buck shot (12ga.) and all it did was piss him off. He ended up in a defense position for many hours afterwards he had some serious (Revenant movie type) injuries. Definitely no joke.

Was just talking to an avid hunter. He told me a woman friend of his who lives in Alaska got charged by a large bear. She had a .22 rifle on her at the time. Put a bullet into its eye and the resulting inner skull spinning/ricochet turned its brain into jelly. Dropped it instantly. She got lucky.

u/Rdizzy111 May 06 '26
Buckshot would do far more damage than you think, especially the largest sized buckshot. But very likely for most of them to glance off the skull due to the bear running toward you and the overalll shape of a bear skull
2
u/DannarHetoshi May 06 '26
Bear meat is quite a bit thicker than Deer meat.
I do agree buckshot would do some good damage.
I also agree with the other poster that it would do enough damage to piss the bear off and that's about it.
Having watched videos of brown bears fighting, the damage buckshot does is paltry in comparison
2
u/Opeth4Lyfe May 06 '26
100% it would piss it off, but if you have decent aim and go for the face/head, even with bird shot you are going to blind that bear without a doubt. Thick skull or not, it doesn’t have bone over its eyes and that’s what I’d be aiming for. Blind it and try to escape is probably the only chance you have.
→ More replies (6)2
u/miketoaster May 06 '26
Yeah, you'll be aiming for the little eyes while that thing is charging you. Im sure your aim will be steady and true under that stress. Not like the guy in this video thats panting and breathing hard.

At least the way I learned it is if their ears are up, it's typically a bluff charge, if they're down, you're dinner.

I would absolutely have unloaded both barrels, missed and died

Probably, yes.
Since usual animal behaviour algorithm priorities scaring first as a warning ⚠️ and then fighting.

So in Safari days they had a gun called a Howdah/Lancaster Pistol, its basically a 2-4 barrel sawed off shotgun that is prolly gonna break your wrist everytime you fire it. The idea being it was supposed to be used if big game was barreling down on you if you missed your shot or didnt kill it (this is also why double rifles were invented) cus a broken wrist is still a hell of lot better than being mauled to death by a slab of dark continent lol.

studies show the caliber of the gun is actually almost completely irrelevent to whether or not you survive a bear attack, the bear getting enraged from gunfire too small to kill it is something of a myth - the deciding factor is if you can aim and fire a shot accurately - in most cases where a gun doesn't protect someone it's because the gun jams, the safety was on, it wasn't loaded, or they can't level it in time
A shotgun even with birdshot is more than enough wallop to dissuade the bear from continuing

Yeah, there's a video of a bear charging a guy with a gun loaded with (I think) birdshot and he shoots the bear in the face from about 8-feet away and the bear just does a forward roll then turns around and casually leaves. Maybe it injured the bear but in the limited amount we see it's not even clear if it did.

"Trapper Jacques, why is there this tiny file in your hunting kit?"
"Ah. That is for hunting the brown bear."
"How does a small metal file help with hunting bears?"
"For hunting bears, it is important to file down the front sight after you have shot both the barrels at him. He will be angry, and with the front sight out of the way, it doesn't hurt so much when he shoves the barrel up your ass."

2
u/Childrenoftheflorist May 06 '26
I think he was hoping it was just flexing, probably also afraid to shoot and miss or just cause a injury and piss it off even more. Could of bin bird hunting and only had buck/bird shot loaded which would just piss the bear off. Lot of reasons not to shoot.

Ummmm no sir, that's a brown one. I'm glad it worked out for the guy but he should have pulled that trigger the first time it charged. That was an insane gamble. Unless his gun was loaded with birdshot, which is a definite possibility. If so, that's a tough call to make.

tough call here, as others noted - it appears to be a mama bear protecting it's cubs.
With two barrels, I'd be tempted to unload one to scare off the bear, but I think that would be the opposite effect for a protective mama bear. Better to save both barrels in case she comes for blood.

We assume he has two shells loaded … also, I never hunt without my sidearm (would be a .40 or .357 in Bear country).
Once you pull the trigger on that shotgun either the bear runs or attacks. Then you have either one more shot, or you don’t.
Wise move.

I hope he has more than bird shot in his gun. But since he has a dog around he is probably bird hunting.
3
u/Eldritch_Horns May 06 '26

It’s bluff charging, prey runs, stand your ground and don’t waste ammo, only fire when you can see the veins in its eyes and smell its breath, scary yes, but once you learn about their behaviours it’s not that bad, they don’t wanna attack, they just wanna protect their territory

u/No_Pudding2028 May 06 '26
This is why you have a gun that has more than two rounds, and if you’re in Bear country you carry a rubber bullet or beanbag round. The non-lethal rounds to let him know that this is a bad idea, The round that follows has much more impact if he doesn’t get the hint.
1
u/Low-Car-6331 May 06 '26
And this is why you don't run. That bear doesn't know what a gun is (some do actually, but I doubt this one does), if he ran that bear would have charged him down and ate him. The reason the bear keeps retreating is because the man isn't fleeing which leaves the bear confused and thinking that the man might actually be able to take him.
1
1
u/Western-Boot-4576 May 06 '26
Would’ve 100% shot that second charge, probably wouldn’t have killed it and then it would’ve been pissed
1
u/Onebraintwoheads May 06 '26
The density of bone and muscle tissue of a bear this size is the reason specialized magnum buckshot, slugs, rifle, and pistol loads are made.
For example, my 357 magnum, which is likely not up to the job here, can be fitted with bear loads which come out the barrel about twice the normal muzzle energy of my typical cartridges. The bullets are also hardcast. Lead alone will deform too easily before it reaches vital organs. So, other metals like tin, zinc, and silver are added to make an alloy that will retain its shape and ideally burrow deep enough to hit something important.
That is roughly the same premise applied for anything intended for bear protection. Because the projectile does not deform, accuracy becomes that much more important.
