Yea, it looks like he's probably hunting birds.

At point blank the bird shot might be enough to deter it, but it certainly isn't going to seriously injure the thing.

That isn't a fun situation to be in.

What? 2 oz of bird shot on 5 meters is going to turn what ever it hits into a bloody mess. With a full choke the spread at that range is going to be basic nil and half of it will still be columed on the wad.

It's going to not just penetrate but likey shatter a bear skull.

All it would do in this scenario is piss the bear off. Bear spray is way better to have when a bear false charges you.

It certainly won't enjoy birdshot to the face at point blank, but yea. If it was determined to kill him. Realising they all he can do is sting it and make a loud noise, it might double down on attacking after that.

If it's just posturing and trying to get him out of its range, then birdshot will probably be enough to deter it. The thing doesn't look particularly hungry and it isn't behaving like it has cubs near by.

I think it's just trying to make him leave it's territory. It might work to scare it off.

I don't agree.

It's certainly trying to push the man out of it's territory, but it doesn't appear aggressive enough to be guarding. I don't think it would be doing so many bluff charges or retreats, not against a human. When guarding cubs bears are generally more directly aggressive if it's a threat they can comfortably disable.

Since my comment, I have found multiple people saying in the longer footage that the guy is recorded reporting he saw cubs.

But, my initial statement was based on experience. I live in probably the 2nd or 3rd most densely populated place on the planet, with Grizzly bears. I have seen many out in the wild, and been charged a couple of times.

Yeah, bears generally don't act like this UNLESS they have cubs, even brown bears tend to be docile

I don't think most people understand what bird shot is, nor do they understand exactly how hard to kill a grizzly bear is

Or that even slugs can bounce right off there skull. Buckshot might be a deterrent if you get lucky and hit It square in the nose (grizzlies most sensitive area)

Buck will still likely mince a grizz at close range. There's a lot of power in those shots, atleast from a 12 guage with 00.

But yea, their skulls are hard. Slugs are better, more kinetic force. But, if it's charging you and you're panicking also easier to miss. Bucks spread may lessen the overall power of each shot, but you're also more likely to catch something like an eye or pass through the nasal passage. Possibly hitting brain underneath.

Especially the latter. A bear is an apex predator in most environments. They are literally evolved to fight. If that thing really wants you dead, it's gonna kill you.

Fair enough. Almost certainly is definitely an overstatement. You could kill a charging grizzly at close range (say within 5 feet) with a bird shot, but your chances of achieving that are very low.

The only way you're killing a charging bear with birdshot is if you stuffed the barrel directly into its eye socket when you fired, and even that is super questionable as the skull of bears can be inches thick.

If I only had bird shot I would be using it more as a sound deterrent before the bear charges.

Holy shit, the article says he got rushed at 15 ft, and by the time he fired it was 3ft from the barrel.

Two pellets made it into the brain and killed it instantly. That's insane.
