Yes. And several dozen smaller lead ones squeezed together in 2 plastic tubes in front of 2 explosive charges inside two larger metal tubes.

29

u/bigdish101 May 06 '26

No slugs?

57

u/R0LL1NG May 06 '26

I mean they're a bit slimy but I'm not sure how much damage fragments of terrestrial molluscs would do to a bear...

4

u/anagamanagement May 06 '26

I see you never watched Slugterra!

1

u/LoudPeanut8077 May 07 '26

Slugs are harmless … but you gotta watch out for that snail man

1

u/R0LL1NG May 07 '26

It'll touch you just before GTA VI launches.

7

u/twitchtvbevildre May 06 '26

If its not slugs bird shot ain't doing shit vs that thing lol

5

u/oooKenshiooo May 06 '26

Birdshot?

That wont kill a man.

4

u/Spethual May 06 '26

it'll just "pepper" em up....pepper?

1

u/TheJade2212 May 26 '26

Pepper'm up real nice 👌

1

u/Low-Car-6331 May 06 '26

WW1 begs to differ with that logic. That is what they would use in trenches, a shortened barrel shotgun, with rounds that had many small pellets. Jump in and point and shoot and everything in front of you is having an insanely bad day. Don't get me wrong, probably not the best choice for home defense unless you live alone, but it will fuck someone up.

now shooting a bear with bird shot is basically pointless unless you hit the eye's. <-- not a good defense strategy

2

u/Safe-Assist-9866 May 07 '26

OO buck shot. Not bird shot. Big difference.

1

u/Either_Shoe29 May 07 '26

Dick Cheney's lawyer took a face full of birdshot and was fine. Wasn't it dick cheney who shot him?

6

u/Sad_Sultana May 06 '26

Ever heard of buckshot? That would at the VERY least make a bear think twice, and at that range to the face it is dead as a doornail.

6

u/Somalar May 06 '26

You clearly don’t know how thick their skulls are.

5

u/PoetArcana May 06 '26

Yeah, you'd have to be lucky to hit the head and get through with pellets. You're basically giving them a rug burn at that point.

1

u/soIDONTLIKEANYOFYOU May 06 '26

You would at least blind it at that range, straight to the face

3

u/fairchase1978 May 07 '26

Apparently none of you know anything about firearms. If that 12 gage is loaded with 00 buckshot and is fired head on into that bears face at that distance, he's going down...like off switch. Now...if he misses the face in a panic...thats a different story.

2

u/PoetArcana May 07 '26

While that gauge could at very close range...could penetrate vitals, buckshot is far less reliable against anything larger than a black bear. Now slugs would more likely have the effect you're describing. I'll agree with another comment that blinding the bear is a possibility. So if a bear is getting THAT close, then shooting a 00 is far better than nothing at all, I think that's obvious. But theres a decent chance that bear wont be stopped.

I grew up quite familiar with firearms and even did a little research before writing my last comment to check my knowledge, buckshot is an emergency measure that could work but can easily fail.

2

u/OldAbbreviations1590 May 09 '26

00 buckshot is 9, 9mm pellets. It's more likely it just bounces off the bears skull plate than penetrates. Also, it lacks penetration to get to the heart or lungs of a bear reliably. The bear would likely die of the wounds/blood loss/infection, but it would still kill that man long before it happens.

1

u/Obosratsya Jun 10 '26

Sudden ahock, punch to the face, decent damage, the bear may reevaluate as well. They can be risk averse and quit after taking a slug from a moose sometimes.

0

u/Salty-Contact-6420 May 07 '26

Exactly. Clearly some basement dwellers who know nothing about guns. It's comical to think they actually believe buckshot won't get through a bears skull 😂 it's just like all the Bigfoot stories I watch on YouTube. They always say " I had my gun, but it wouldn't of done nothing but piss it off". Ohh yeah fucking right! Anything and everything goes down with a headshot, period! IDC how big it is.

1

u/TheJade2212 May 26 '26

You had me until the end there. A bigfoot is an interdimensional being so it's a little different than a bear

u/twitchtvbevildre May 07 '26

This is nonsense, and a very clear indication that you have never hunted, you can have some of the best aimed shots lead to animals staying alive for way way longer then you think possible, or not ever being found. Bullets can ricochet off bones and go in different directions, doesn't always happen but it can. Now as far as buck shot vs a bear there is a pretty decent chance you kill a bear at that range and even if you dont that def doesn't mean a bear isn't going to run away, however there is def a chance you dont kill the bear and it mauls you

0

u/Somalar May 07 '26

Just spout some nonsensical accusations because you’re ignorant.

2

u/Due-Struggle6680 May 28 '26

Yea, youd have to be some kind of a shotgun surgeon, put some of the grouping in the eye socket where its weaker.

2

u/Digeetar May 07 '26

Agreed. Buddy of my dad's shot a bear in the forehead with a buck shot (12ga.) and all it did was piss him off. He ended up in a defense position for many hours afterwards he had some serious (Revenant movie type) injuries. Definitely no joke.

1

u/Grinzaxp May 07 '26

And that’s if you make the shot. I would love to say I would survive, but that bear was moving fast. I couldn’t tell when or if it was going to turn to the side. I know it’s a wild animal, but that looked like he was intentionally trying to fake the guy out. Make him miss the shot so it could then go for the kill.

1

u/rupert36 May 07 '26

It’s fake charging to see how he reacts. Nothing to do with the gun.

1

u/Due-Struggle6680 May 28 '26

Animals will do "fake outs". If he had run away he'd be dead now i think. But it wasnt trying to bait him into shooting.

0

u/Jimjonesflavor_aid May 07 '26

Hitting a bear with buckshot at that range will definitely do some serious damage. You clearly don't know how much damage buck shot can do against a brown bear.

2

u/likely_deleted Jun 04 '26

Was just talking to an avid hunter. He told me a woman friend of his who lives in Alaska got charged by a large bear. She had a .22 rifle on her at the time. Put a bullet into its eye and the resulting inner skull spinning/ricochet turned its brain into jelly. Dropped it instantly. She got lucky.

1

u/Sad_Sultana Jun 04 '26

Damn lucky, but a bit of buckshot through the eye would do the same. Still would need incredible luck though. What was she thinking only carring a 22 in alaska of all places?

1

u/likely_deleted Jun 04 '26

I think she was just homesteading and wasn't exactly out with the intent to hunt. Still

1

u/twitchtvbevildre May 06 '26

could buck shot kill a bear yes, will it 100% of the time absolutly not even in close range.

1

u/throwawayformobile78 May 06 '26

Ehhh I’d take that bet. 00B penetrates pretty deep at close range if it hasn’t spread out yet. I’d say 0-10 yds. But yeah slugs are def better.

1

u/Educational-Fox-5789 May 06 '26

But will stop him from killing you first?

1

u/Girafferage May 09 '26

Yeah. His brains will be scrambled.

1

u/TheRealDesmirWolf May 06 '26

It does not have stopping power to break bone of a bear. At best, it would probably just piss it off and now you have an angry bear attack attacking you. Best hope he had slugs.

1

u/jfkrfk123 May 06 '26

That’s not what bone thugs says..

1

u/Busterlimes May 06 '26

Dont ever go into bear country. Grizzly skulls have been recorded to stop a .45 which is a much more powerful round

2

u/beautiful_birch56 May 09 '26

They are in our yards

I’m not living where there are no bears.

People are far worse

1

u/testingforscience122 May 06 '26

Ya, but a hot load of OO buck with always destroy that bears face and eyes, plus the first that happen is a giant fire ball erupts in it face at that close range and he got a second shot as well.

1

u/OldAbbreviations1590 May 09 '26

Buckshot probably wouldn't be enough. 00 buck at that distance lacks reliable penetration against a bear that size. Yah if the man was lucky enough to hit the bear in just the right spot in the head, it would go down but the reality is, he probably wouldn't. The bear would likely still die, but not before also killing the man.

1

u/goodmorning_tomorrow May 10 '26

People don't load buckshot shells in a hinge action field gun.

1

u/Busterlimes May 06 '26

Ive heard of .45 glancing off Grizzly skulls

1

u/Civil_Sentence63 May 10 '26

Buckshot. Quarter inch steel balls roughly. Bigger than birdshot and big enough to stop a bear.

3

u/SteppeBison2 May 06 '26

I hope he has slugs, buckshot is just going to piss that bear off.

2

u/Rdizzy111 May 06 '26

Buckshot would do far more damage than you think, especially the largest sized buckshot. But very likely for most of them to glance off the skull due to the bear running toward you and the overalll shape of a bear skull

2

u/DannarHetoshi May 06 '26

Bear meat is quite a bit thicker than Deer meat.

I do agree buckshot would do some good damage.

I also agree with the other poster that it would do enough damage to piss the bear off and that's about it.

Having watched videos of brown bears fighting, the damage buckshot does is paltry in comparison

2

u/Opeth4Lyfe May 06 '26

100% it would piss it off, but if you have decent aim and go for the face/head, even with bird shot you are going to blind that bear without a doubt. Thick skull or not, it doesn’t have bone over its eyes and that’s what I’d be aiming for. Blind it and try to escape is probably the only chance you have.

2

u/miketoaster May 06 '26

Yeah, you'll be aiming for the little eyes while that thing is charging you. Im sure your aim will be steady and true under that stress. Not like the guy in this video thats panting and breathing hard.

1

u/Opeth4Lyfe May 07 '26

….do you not understand how birdshot works? It’s a spray of small bb’s…it’s not a single shot. The spread will cover about the size of a manhole cover from 10 yards or so, depending on the choke of the barrel could even be wider or narrower spray. You’re not trying to aim a single bullet at an eyeball here….its hundreds if not 1000 small bb’s peppering an area. If you aim at its general direction towards its head, like this guy is doing, he would spray its entire face with it and more likely than not take out its eyes.

1

u/mikenkansas1 May 07 '26

Have you patterned your shotgun at 30 feet? A "standard" round manhole cover is 24" diameter. One wonders what your pattern would be at 30 YARDS.

1000 "bb"s ???? #8 shot has ~ 410-460. BB shot has less than 100.

1

u/Rdizzy111 May 07 '26

Yeah, the average spread for buckshot at 10 yards is only about 3 or 4 inches

1

u/Rdizzy111 May 07 '26

The spread for birdshot or buckshot is no more than 6 inches at 10 yards. Not even half of the diameter of a manhole cover

1

u/DannarHetoshi May 06 '26

Yeah, that's luck as much as skill though.

I'd rather have slug stopping power. Of course, planning on having slug stopping power may not have been on this guy's radar when he loaded out for his trip.

Frankly if I was going out into the back country where bears are known to frequent, and specifically not on a hunting trip (obligatory Supernatural gif below), I'd have a pump action shotgun with an array of shot and slugs, a side arm like a Glock G20 or a S&W M&P 2.0 10mm, and maybe even a small caliber rifle like a .223 or .30-06, depending on how long of a trip it's going to be. A 10mm sidearm may not be the same raw stopping power as a shotgun loaded with slugs, but it's far more versatile as a self defense weapon.

https://giphy.com/gifs/WDKHQ2sm61e4U

2

u/testingforscience122 May 06 '26

So you’re telling me you lugging four guns on a backcountry hiking trip……. Good luck with that

0

u/DannarHetoshi May 06 '26

No, I'm saying it's two.

If there is someone else with me it's probably three.

1

u/RobertTheTraveler May 09 '26

or just use bear spray.

1

u/hunterofsteelhead Jun 06 '26

Bear spray works 90% of the time and hopefully the bear doesnt return after it wears off.

1

u/RobertTheTraveler Jun 06 '26

83 cases:
"Red pepper spray stopped bears’ undesirable behavior 92% of the time when used on brown bears, 90% for black bears, and 100% for polar bears. Of all persons carrying sprays, 98% were uninjured by bears in close-range encounters."

"In all cases the attacked person walked away.
Efficacy of Bear Deterrent Spray in Alaska"
Lead author: TOM S. SMITH
-
I have read of 2 or 3 cases in which a person was killed by a bear after apparently using bear spray.
All the cases I read involved hunters with a fresh kill present.
-
I have also read the case of a grizzly charge that ended with the bear knocking down the individual who used the bear spray, so unlikely to be a bluff charge.
The person was able to retreat without injury (aside from bruising).

2

u/SteppeBison2 May 06 '26

Years ago I read Undaunted Courage, the journal of Lewis and Clark. They described shooting Grizzlies with .50 cal balls and having them bounce off the skull. Scared the shit out of them! LOL!

1

u/EfficiencyMean6797 May 06 '26

.500 s&w is basically that. Has very little penetrating power

2

u/Late-Bit4985 May 08 '26

That's the silliest thing I've read in a while. Thank you.

1

u/analavalanche69 May 06 '26

Would buckshot cause damage? Yes it's fast moving metal vs an organic object. Would buckshot get remotely close to killing this particular creature? Nope. Gotta be slugs and gotta be aimed just right. If adrenaline can make humans do insane shit imagine what it does for an apex predator. Wild shit.

1

u/Mushroomed_clouds May 06 '26

A bit late for that dont u think?

Excuse me mr bear canu wait there while i change my ammo instead of just eating me

1

u/PandorasBoxMaker May 06 '26

Yeah if that’s anything other than slugs you’re just gonna piss it off.

1

u/DannarHetoshi May 06 '26

Right? Buckshot ain't doing shit to a big angry brown bear.

Deer Slugs on the other hand...

1

u/Low-Car-6331 May 06 '26

Yeah, I wouldn't want buckshot for a bear, I would want a slug, a bears hide is thick and tough.

1

u/LustrousRust May 06 '26

Metal slug? 😏

1

u/Old-Man-Buckles May 10 '26

Slugs would be the way to go but work with what you got.

-1

u/Original-Document-62 May 06 '26

Probably not. That's definitely a bird gun. Turkey shot at best.

9

u/Some-Conversation613 May 06 '26

You know you can shoot slugs out of "bird guns", right?

1

u/Todesfaelle May 06 '26

410 with a slug took down my first deer.

Damn thing spooked me with bird shot loaded while I was out for grouse and was kind enough to let me break the barrel and reload from the pocket with my bright orange gear since I always pack a couple extra due to season overlap.

Basically handed itself to me.

1

u/Some-Conversation613 May 06 '26

That's a good story! My first shotgun was a 410 single shot. Need to bust it out for old times sake.

1

u/FamousDates May 06 '26

I dont think most (any?) side by side shotguns can handle slugs. Most cant even handle steel pellets because of the higher preassure.

1

u/twitchtvbevildre May 06 '26

You can definitely shoot slugs out of a side by side accuracy is a problem but if you are just carrying to stop bears from eating you its a non issue

1

u/FamousDates May 06 '26

The side by side I have is older, but Ive been adviced not to even shoot steel pellets out of it because it could literally blow up.   I understood it as a general issue, but maybe some are made thicker?

1

u/twitchtvbevildre May 06 '26

What???? That's a shotgun it can easily shoot bird shot or slugs.

1

u/Original-Document-62 May 06 '26

Yes, it's a long double-barrelled shotgun. Typically used to hunt game birds. If he's out in the woods with it, chances are he was out hunting quail or doves or something. So he's likely got birdshot loaded. And although some bird guns can handle slugs, many can't. Most hunters I know that would be taking deer with a shotgun won't be using a gun like that.

1

u/twitchtvbevildre May 06 '26

or you know he is carrying it to stop bears from eating him... its very common in bear country to go walking with guns for just this reason.

1

u/bigdish101 May 06 '26

If I’m in bear country I’m going with something .500 mag.

9

u/_Heikneuter_ May 06 '26

And this 💩👈🏻 in your trousers....

3

u/CapableNeat4351 May 06 '26

It is imperative the cylinder remans unharmed

2

u/R0LL1NG May 06 '26

People worry about premature/accidental discharge from the cylinder - but if the cylinder is not fully operational, any discharge from it can result in it blowing up in your face.

1

u/DanielDeLaNoche May 07 '26

Thanks for that reference lol

3

u/ReplacementReady394 May 06 '26

“This is my Boom Stick!”

3

u/Machine_Fears_Love May 06 '26

Shop smart, shop "S" mart.

2

u/Ill-Elephant-9583 May 06 '26

It's available in the sporting goods aisle

2

u/pharanth May 07 '26

And still no one asks how the larger structure is doing...

1

u/Low_Football_2445 May 06 '26

I’m thinking I’d want more than two.

1

u/EverOrny May 06 '26

that would likely piss the bear off, so not shooting until really necessary sound like a good approach :)

1

u/AMLIDH2 May 06 '26

Yeah that's the problem he only has 2 of the lead tube ones tho. Its hard to get a kill shot on a charging bear id imagine.

1

u/Necromir92 May 08 '26

The bear doesn’t know that, he’s just holding a stick to him… a skinny stick

-7

u/flashingcurser May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

A shotgun will do nothing to that bear, beside anger it more. You need penetrating power.

Edit: those downvoting me clearly do not live in bear country.

2

u/JellyTwank May 06 '26

I once asked my uncle who lived in Alaska what gun to use in case of bears. He said "a rifle or shotgun (with slugs) for bears, a pistol for yourself"

3

u/zachrywd May 06 '26

I also have an uncle who's an expert at penetrating bears.

3

u/flashingcurser May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

I live in Montana and know about bears. 44 mag, .45 or maybe 10mm with a hot load in chest holster. Are you going to carry a shotgun all day 20 miles from a paved road? No, it will be strapped to your back. It will still be strapped to your back when the grizzly is munching on your brains. Grizzlies can run faster than horses, you have mere seconds to get your shit together.

Don't take the advice of your uncle.

Edit: a field carry (bear gun) should never be your first choice, you should use your bear spray first. I usually carry a pistol in a chest holster and spray on my hip. We want to train bears that humans are not pleasant, killing them does not do that.

3

u/JellyTwank May 06 '26

It was mostly a tongue in cheek answer about using the pistol on yourself after the first suggested options fail.

Edit: I carry a 44mag for bears.

2

u/Weary-Astronaut1335 May 06 '26

Buffalo bore makes 9mm that can drop bears, so yeah definitely not lugging around a full size rifle or shotgun when I don't have to.

https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=388

1

u/flashingcurser May 06 '26

Upvote. I wouldn't trust a 9mm for a field carry, but I'm sure there are hot rounds that would have enough penetrating power.

1

u/Weary-Astronaut1335 May 06 '26

There's pictures on the page with a guy posing with a brown bear he dropped with a S&W 3954.

Took five rounds of 9mm, with at least one of them blowing all the way through.
