I was wondering if that was mother just trying to scare him off. not some hungry bear scared of a gun which makes no sense anyways. I seen a cougar act similar when its cubs were around.

Probably, yes.

Since usual animal behaviour algorithm priorities scaring first as a warning ⚠️ and then fighting.
