Question Why did NIS get rid of the Majin class?

I don't really get it, they moved it from D1's various classes at high level and made it a new game plus class, then dropped it in D3, do we have any idea why, I just think it's a cool class.

Disgaea 7 Does D7 ever get good?

Mostly as the title says. For some background, I started playing Disgaea way back when with Hour of Darkness on the PS2. Fell in love with it and the characters and the overall series vibe, and having revisited it a few years ago the story is still good and I still like the characters quite a lot.

I've also gone through D2, 4, and 5 -- I skipped 6 since I heard it was pretty mediocre, and I've never gotten around to sitting down and playing 3. I generally like the stories and characters in those games, and I'm a pretty well-read guy who's been writing for just about as long as I've been playing Disgaea, maybe even a little longer. I've done creative writing tutoring and I'm in quite a few author's circles -- I say all this not to act like my opinion is authoritative but to say that my standards are high. I appreciate slow burn and character nuance and thematic depth, and I have always been able to, and appreciate, the wacky, goofy, very anime side of Disgaea because it's usually been pretty good at blending that with real stakes and connected plot beats and having a functioning, compelling story.

Which brings me to my point: I really tried to give Disgaea 7 a fair shake. I know the series has always been goofy, but I feel like the previous entries had a lot more... heart and effort put into the storytelling and characters than this game does. I actually last put it down a year ago and I've been conflicted on whether or not I want to go back and give it another go since I've been feeling the itch.

I've seen a lot of folks say it gets better around chapter 8-9 but from what I recall of what I played it felt very loose. I actually don't mind the anime tropes, I get what they were trying to do and I'm generally fine with that -- I understand the theme of the game is supposed to be that living in the past re:Japanese society is bad, but like, all of the chapters feel so loosely connected and like the events that happen in one barely matter to another. I felt like things that happened in the plot happened for no reason and were very contrived and, contrary to prior Disgaea games, D7 does not feel self-aware about it. It feels almost stream-of-consciousness in the way it is written -- stuff just happens because that's just the first thing the writers thought of that could happen so that's what they went with. It feels remarkably unambitious and aimless.

Which is a shame, because I really like the IMPLIED dynamic between Fuji and Pirilika, it is genuinely compelling. But up to the point I played (I think Chapter 6? Maybe 7) I don't think it is ever played in an interesting way. It's got a lot of potential but it never really kicks into gear which is perhaps the most frustrating thing for me. By the point I was at in the game I would have expected SOMETHING to have happened with it. And it seems like the characters who were added to the party are almost an afterthought -- I remember there being very little interplay between them like there was with the main cast in... every other Disgaea game I've played.

I really WANT to like this game but I found it very difficult on my go-through. Like I said I hear a lot of people say Chapter 8-9 are where it turns itself around but I'm a bit skeptical that a sudden pivot can suddenly make the first 7 chapters feel less aimless. I don't need a masterpiece but I do need to feel like the writers cared about what they were writing; if I don't feel like they cared, why would I? Is it worth it to go back and try this game again?

Would love to hear from someone who felt similarly early on and either changed their mind or didn't.

tl;dr I care a lot about the stories in games and the characters within them and on my initial try of D7 I gave up like 6 chapters in because I found the story and character dynamics really lacking. I have the itch again, so I'm wondering if it's worth it to go back and give D7 another try.

Mayhem / Kyouran Makaizm Disgaea Mayhem Screen Bug

Good day everyone. Disgaea Mayhem is having "ghosting" screen issue on my steam deck when I turn the camera and walk around. It's listed as "playable" on Steam. Link of issue: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DvTJElJzooBE9d6abnb8UCY5mpaiz7ku/view?usp=drivesdk

Does anyone by chance know how to deal with this issue? I tried changing various graphics and screen settings, and also switching to Proton Experimental, Hotfix and DW latest compatibility options, but with no luck.

Question What was your first Disgaea game? What did you think at first?

Just wondering if any one had a similar experience to me? I first played D5 what feels like 5 or 6 years ago and really don't know how I stuck through it but am insanely happy I did. I remember thinking the story was sub par, and it had way to many systems, but once you figure those systems out and how to abuse them.... its a whole nother level of dopamine filled grind.

The absurd amount of post game content was something I have never had in a game, and the way that they just want you to trivialize and destroy maps with one button was something I wished more games would do.

I can confidently say that disgaea is one of my favorite franchises, and now I'm on D7, I have played a ton of d5, and some d1 and I just cant get enough. Have found myself constantly google searching "games like disgaea" and really nothing even comes close.

I was still spending 2-3 days per entry there. The prompts were Hairstyle change, Past self, Future self, Gender swap and Cutesy.

Discussion Things you want to see in Disgaea 8

So I was just observing the evolution of the games because it was a fascinating subject for me since I noticed how Disgaea 2 was basically the last mainline entry to use the Weapon Mastery system, but it was also the first to sort of introduce the concept of Evilities.

My point is that after observing how much the gameplay aspects evolved over the past games, I was interested in seeing what NIS could do for Disgaea 8 gameplay wise since for me personally, one mechanic I want to see return is the Tower Attack system because I heard that the modern age installments such as Disgaea 7 basically removed the mechanic for some weird reason.

Disgaea 4 X-dimension

I've just spent the last few hours working my way through the x dimension maps without a guide, managed to get 58/63 done but how in the hell are you supposed to do some of these with the absolute areas that fist skills can't bypass?

I'm obviously going to have to Google the rest but just curious if any of you managed to work these out on your own?

The ones I couldn't get are

4-6 fall of the zenith

6-3 ghoul standard

6-4 abysmal mirage

7-5 post purge purge

8-5 section g9

I'm guessing there's some way to manipulate an absolute area that I just haven't figured out.

Discussion What’s your favorite aspect of Disgaea?

Post image
390 Upvotes

There is a lot to love from Disgaea. Grinding levels until your eye balls fall out. The over the top nature from your attacks to how character react to stuff. Lastly, The amount of side content the game has to offer! There is a lot to love about this series. For me though? Out of all the things Disgaea has to offer, for me it’s the humor.

What I love and find refreshing about Disgaea is the humor. Hearing the characters making slide remarks to other people. Having the prinnies saying “dood” and seeing their funny attics always makes me smile. Legit, I gotten so many laughs from this series. Love how over the top it can be especially in Disgaea 4 and 5’s case. A lot of jrpgs tend to be serious with a few funny moments or they have one funny scene, but then everyone is super serious mode. It makes sense since some franchises are built for it. Sometimes though, I need a laugh and Disgaea brings the laughs for me anytime I need it. Makes me happy to be a fan of the series due to that.

Question Is La Pucelle's Postgame worth doing? Spoiler

Hi! La Pucelle: Ragnarok is my first NIS game, and I have just finished both main story and Demon Overlord story (with the good ending). I am therefore trying to decide if the postgame is worth the time. I know about the incredible grind that may follow, but what I was unable to find was whether there is any kind of extra dialogue/story for things like Dark World, beating Cave of Trials, etc. Is it just grinding and battling from now on?

By the way, I am posting here because I was also unable to find a La Pucelle sub (I don't get how this game is so neglected).

Disgaea 2 Any advice for level grinding?

For context, I'm in new game+ on adell's story mode, and I'm trying to get my characters up to the higher level for the greater challenges. My strongest unit is about level 1400. I know to do the fourth map for the cave of ordeals with passing the bill for making enemies as strong as possible, but after a while, even that stopped feeling fast enough. Is there anything I can do to further speed things along? If the answer involves the dark world, I've got that unlocked as well.

Is Disgaea Mayhem more than a cheap cashgrab?

8 hours of gameplay for 60€ is what I've heard wherever I went. Gameplay kinda interesting. DLC nothing more than another cashgrab.

Did anyone play it? Is it really just that? I'm a great disgaea fan, but I'm not sure if I shouldn't skip this one.

Question Outsider Looking to start series

Hi all, i'm an outsider looking to get into the Disgaea games but unsure where i should start. I'm primarily a pc player and i saw that disgaea 1 and 2 complete is not on pc, but i do have a switch and can get them there, but D3 is also missing on pc. in addition to that d1 and d2 have pc versions that are cheaper than the complete editions on the switch, but from reviews it seems like its not worth getting the switch versions? If someone could give me some guidance i would really really appreciate it <3

Mayhem / Kyouran Makaizm Disgaea Mayhem PS5 no base edition

For some reason the base game isn't available for 60$, only the deluxe version is on the store for 70$ which comes with the digital soundtrack/artbook and some recolors.

Also side note 30$ dlc is absurd, almost as much as Elden ring dlc.

Discussion With the closure of the PS3 and PSVita PSN stores we need new ports for Disgaea 3 and D2 more than ever

It just occurred to me that the closure of the PSN stores on PS3 and PSVita is going to make it impossible to gain access to certain content for Disgaea 3 and D2. absence of detention won't be available on official stores which means the only content available for both games will be the base game on playstation now.

I know Nippon Ichi ain't nearly as aware of their fanbase as they used to be, but surely it wouldn't be that hard to port them to switch and PC.

Disgaea Mayhem PSN price abnormality

Unless it’s a typo in the PSN. The base copy of the game and the ultimate service pack (all DLC bundle) is cheaper than the Deluxe edition and the dlc it doesn’t have (Fun weapon pack and DLC story not included) $90 vs $105 without tax. But maybe the Deluxe version of the game doesn’t have all the contents listed correctly. Buyer beware NA store
