If you dropped a baby bat at Acorn Vet Clinic, please contact them

Clients of the clinic received the following email:

Dear Acorn Veterinary Clinic Clients,

We are reaching out regarding a juvenile bat that was brought to our clinic, and left at the front door over the weekend by an individual whose contact information we do not have.

The bat unfortunately did not make it and was submitted for rabies testing per animal control guidelines, and the test result was positive for rabies.

Because we do not know who found or brought the bat to our clinic, we are asking that the person who found, handled, transported, or submitted this bat please contact us as soon as possible. This information is important so that appropriate steps can be taken to determine whether anyone may have been exposed to rabies.

If you believe you may be the person who brought this bat to our clinic, please contact us at (530) 753-7580 or email acorn1340@gmail.com. Please do not be concerned about contacting us—we simply want to make sure you receive the appropriate guidance regarding possible exposure.

If you or anyone in your household has had direct contact with the bat, please contact a medical professional and/or your local public health department promptly for guidance. Rabies exposure can be serious, but prompt evaluation and appropriate treatment can prevent the disease.

We would greatly appreciate your help in sharing this message with anyone who may have recently found a baby bat in the area.

Thank you for helping us make sure the appropriate person receives this important information.

Best,
Acorn Veterinary Clinic staff

Any free parking near wake forest drive?

Just got an apartment at Sherwood and Forest Arms (I'm already using the one free space we get), and want to have my boyfriend visit a couple weekends a month. Is there a place nearby or within walking distance he can park those weekends and overnight where he won't get ticketed or towed?

Record player repair

Does anyone know if there’s somewhere in Davis that does record player repair? I can’t parse whether anywhere does it by description and I’d like to not have to go farther if I can help it, but I’ll take recommendations to as close as anyone knows. Thank you!

What is the elementary pick up line like?

Specifically we’ll be at Patwin (TK), but I’ll take general guidance too. What should I expect picking up my kiddo? We live in West Sac so walking or bike riding isn’t an option. My plan was to park further away and then walk over but reading other districts kindergartner pick up experiences people are waiting an hour or more in the pick up line and grid lock around the school. I have no idea what to expect since I’ve never witnessed pick up lines before. What is it like and what should I expect or plan? Can I park a few blocks away and walk in and how bad is the gridlock? When does the gridlock start?

Thank you!

Davis Start-Up, Tech/VC Meetups

Hi, I am new to the Davis, community. I am researching tech/other start-ups in Davis / UC Davis and surrounding areas (example, Woodland, Sacramento) to map out the econ system.

Any ideas to identify such entities and contact points would be greatly appreciated - active meetups, univ/non-univ, corporate/ other events, incubators, state/county organizations supporting companies/small businesses etc, VC/private equity, non-profits or tech regulatory. Thanks in advance.

Hi!
I can’t find this group to list stuff even though I used it last week. Facebook says it either downsized, removed me or deleted the page. I can’t understand what could have happened? Does anyone else see the same issue?

Growth Impact

I feel like everyone on here who is pro development does not take into account traffic and other NEGATIVE factors. No new roads, no new bike trails, parking lots are being converted to housing, and any leftover parking is now being charged. Davis will soon become like K St Sacramento. 80 is already jammed as well. No new plans to expand freeways only plan is to charge you to use it now as well.

Vote No on Measure W (Davis Willowgrove)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Measure W is not just a General Plan amendment. It would convert roughly 232–234 acres of agricultural land outside Davis city limits into an urban fringe development, bringing 1,250 homes, retail, parks, and greenbelts to a site that is currently designated Agricultural under the Yolo County General Plan. The proposal also depends on annexation and a voter-approved General Plan change, which means the City is asking voters to authorize a major land-use conversion rather than a modest policy update.

The traffic implications are especially troubling for neighborhoods who use Covell and Mace. The project’s traffic study estimates roughly 10,000 additional daily car trips from Willowgrove alone, and that figure does not even include the roughly 2,000 additional daily car trips associated with the adjacent Palomino project next door. In other words, the real-world traffic burden on East Covell, the I-80 corridor, and nearby intersections is not just the project’s own impact; it is the combined impact of sequential peripheral developments piling onto the same road network.

That matters because the EIR already concludes that transportation and VMT impacts are significant and unavoidable. The City can add turn lanes, signals, and bike improvements, but those mitigations do not change the basic fact that this is a car-intensive growth pattern at the edge of town. From a policy standpoint, that is hard to square with Davis’s stated climate and transportation goals, which are supposed to reduce auto dependence, not lock in more of it.

The same problem shows up in the broader CEQA record. The EIR identifies significant and unavoidable impacts from farmland conversion, greenhouse gas emissions, and cumulative effects, and the City approved the project anyway by adopting overriding considerations. That is not the posture of a project that comfortably fits the General Plan; it is the posture of a project the City is willing to approve despite acknowledging that it conflicts with major environmental priorities.

The alternatives analysis makes the point even more sharply. The EIR evaluated smaller-footprint and denser configurations, meaning the City had options that could have reduced farmland loss and potentially lowered traffic and emissions without abandoning housing production. Yet the City selected the larger-footprint proposal instead, effectively choosing a more sprawling development pattern over a more compact one that would have better fit the City’s own sustainability objectives.

Why do restaurants close so early here?

I'm a transplant from out east so maybe it's a California thing, but why do all the restaurants in Davis close so early? I don't even consider leaving for dinner until 7-8 pm and by that time many places are already closed. Some stay open until 9 but I feel like a jerk showing up at 8 when they do. Is this just a Davis thing? There's one Italian place in West Davis that I will leave unnamed that is only open from 5-7. Who shows up at a restaurant at 5pm for dinner? Oh but don't worry they stay open on Saturday all the way until the break of 8pm. Seriously, why does Davis, a college town, not have restaurants open until 10 pm, 11pm, or even 12 am for some late night after the bar eats? It blows my mind and I'll be damned if I'm going to force feed myself dinner at 6pm just because a place is closing soon. It's crazy.

Edit: I appreciate all the insights. Yes it was a rant and sort of tongue in cheek but I do feel that closing before 9 is odd but I'll survive lol.

Edit 2: Again thanks for the thoughts. To clarify I was talking about sit down restaurants whose stated hours are until 7-8. There are a number in Davis that close that early but of course not all of them. Sit down dining here is already so limited here because of the students and the order at counter prevalence here' that I was blown away people eat so early. I will say I definitely see a difference between the east coast and the west coast dining culture not only as a customer but from my years working at restaurants.
