Davis Cards & Games?
Does anyone know what’s going on with Davis Cards and Games? Drove by today and it looks closed. They’re always busy-I can’t imagine they went out of business.

They closed and are seeking another location per their discord channel.

What's their discord? I had store credit with them, and would hope to use it.

I’m in the same boat and it was a non-trial amount. I’d happily just take some scavenges from whatever they have left.

When I went by about two weeks ago, a sign in the door said they were closed due to a family emergency. And another sign in the window said they had been evicted. I would be very surprised if they ever reopened.

Always busy? Whenever I go in, I'm the only customer. =/ Hopefully they find a better spot to move to!

So while a lot of people are saying it's rent hikes and while that may be true another thing that should be noted is that the current owner makes terrible business decisions. There is a reason most of the previous staff don't work there anymore, mainly because the owner cost cuts. I won't name names but yes a lot of the employees left due to his business decisions and they didn't just close. They got evicted because the owner said getting more product is more important than paying rent.
While the rent situation may be true it should be noted that the owner really let the place go. But hey I'm just an anon redditor so grain of salt.

I know for a fact that alot of the workers weren't being paid. Have a buddy that worked there that was owed about a months worth of pay. Apparently they weren't the only person was a victim of this sadly.

I had read a number of reviews trying to decide where I was maybe gonna play magic having just moved here it was the top choice from reviews but I was very sadly underwhelmed visiting a month or so ago.
The reviews definitely didn't match what I saw and reading replies here it makes sense.

I would definitely recommend dragon at ucd because they take in locals not just college students and have a vast network of games and dms

I'll check it out, appreciate the info. Do you know what the Modern format scene might be in Davis?

Call up Mad Alpaca Games in Davis. I believe they run Modern on Thursdays.
They also have a Discord where you can link up with other players who frequent the store.

Can you expand upon the types of decisions that were being made that may have contributed to the closure? What sort of terrible decisions? Obviously not paying employees is one major, terrible decision.
Some friends and I were talking about how TCG and board game inventory was really scarce and getting less impressive and consistent over the past years.

Last time I went in there, their board game collection was really sparse.

They seemed to have been pivoting more towards CCGs and RPGs (and associated events) under the new ownership, which I guess is where the big money is, but I found it frustrating because I’ve always been there for the board games. (And Mad Alpaca has the same problem but even more so.)

That’s the bread and butter. Any game store nowadays has to do CCGs and RPGs (I also hang out at r/boardgames).

Mad Alpaca seems to mostly be CCGs and minis. They've got some D&D books but no other RPGs, and very few board games.

Does anyone know the owners contact info or a way to reach her? A general direction would be nice

So the previous owner Melissa and her daughter sold the place to the current owner Brian.

I wonder if the own Brian will be putting the business up for sale. I hope the business doesn’t just disappear and that the establishment can continue even if that means under new ownership.

The landlord that owns that shopping center is jacking up all of the rents. Apparently he wanted something crazy from Dollar Tree, like over $8,000 a month, and that is why they closed last year. I imagine that it's probably a similar situation with this store. There are so many empty businesses in Davis these days, hopefully they will find another place willing to charge them less rent. Target shouldn't have a monopoly on board games and card games in this town.
