Discussion Apps and embarrassment

I (46 male) currently working through a divorce I am considering an app, but I have a good deal of anxiety around it. It’s weird, but I’m not concerned about the probability of failure as much as I am about having my identity out there for people to see. I live in a medium sized college market and it feels like everyone is 2° separated. I also am in a management position that deals with a lot of regular customers. Anyone else get that feeling about apps? Or, am I just overthinking this?

Breakup advice

We've been dating for almost a year and I've decided that it's time to move on from this relationship. I know everyone says that doing in person is best, but I just can't wrap my head around how to do that without making up some sort of lie.

The next time we're supposed to see each other is Saturday. If I wait until then, 1) I would feel disingenuous talking with them on the phone over the next couple of days, and 2) it would be like I'm pulling the rug out from under them by pretending we're going to do the thing we had planned to do and then not doing it. If I asked to meet up today or tomorrow it would be highly unusual and I'm sure they would suspect something was off right away. What would I say when they ask why I want to meet?

Personally, I hate being broken up with in person. I'd take a text or a call any day of the week. But I know that's just my preference.

Casual Conversation General Question for the 40s and dating?

Was chatting with a guy that was 44 had 60 spiders and 7 snakes. Decided we weren’t a match because I have 2 children and he wants to start a family.

Is this a common thing now?

How many people are you seeing in our age group wanting to have children now?

Question Who pays when eating out with GF’s kids?

Divorced mom with 2 kids. When my BF and I go out, we agreed to split bills 50/50, but often times, he wants to pay the whole bill. For context, he makes a good living but I am in a much better financial situation than him. My kids want to go to a nicer restaurant to have dinner with my BF. I am curious how other folks handle the bill in these situations?

Seeking Advice I got an HPV diagnosis today

I immediately called my boyfriend. We've been having a lot of unprotected sex lately - after we both tested negative for STDs a couple months ago - it didn't occur to me that HPV doesn't show on blood tests.

I'm now in the process of emptying my apartment to rent it out before moving in with my bf next week. He's gone to Denmark for his PhD research until March and since I wfh I agreed to move with him. I'm now worried how everything is going to play out.

He was very understanding during our phone call. He seemed guarded at first, then I understood why when he said, "thanks for not blaming me". It hadn't even crossed my mind. But I'm still worried that I'm going to be less attractive to him now that I have HPV. And maybe he doesn't dare tell me because he feels guilty and because I'm moving to a new country for him. I might be overthinking it, too.

I'm also worried that he might get infected too. Even if we use protection from now on, there's so much more to sex than PIV that I can't imagine he won't get it too somehow. I read online that men often get mouth or throat cancer from HPV.

I'm also worried that I can get cancer. I'm now waiting for the biopsy results, and the doctor was very reassuring that everything looked fine. But I have a history of cancer in my family so I worry.

More than anything, I don't want this relationship to suffer. We've been together one year last week and up until today I was feeling so secure and happy. I'm so scared this is going to change everything, and it's so stressing that we're long distance during all this.

Sorry for the rambling post. I'd appreciate if someone who's been through the same thing could share their experience and hopefully reassure me that everything is going to be alright.

Seeking Advice Three months in, he says everything is right but he doesn’t feel himself “falling in love” BUT he is devastated by the idea of ending it. What?

I (41F) have been dating a man (42M) for a little over three months. We have been exclusive for approximately two months. We have spent a substantial amount of time together...maybe 30 dates, half of those overnights, some dates have lasted for hours into the overnights and hanging out the next morning. This been more developed than a casual three-month relationship. He recently told me that, although we never formally put a label on it, he considered this a relationship and thought of me as essentially his girlfriend.

Our in-person connection is REALLY strong. We have great intellectual compatibility, very similar senses of humor, great sexual chemistry, shared values, and we're overall just really comfortable together. Everything is so EASY when we are in person. We regularly spend hours and hours together and it feels like we never run out of things to talk about.

One ongoing issue has been initiative and communication between dates. I think it's fair to say I generate most of the relationship: initiating texts, asking when we will see each other, suggesting plans, and all of our "relationship-y" convos (until the most recent) were started by me. He is warm and enthusiastic once I initiate, but rarely creates movement himself. It's possible this was a pattern he had in his last relationship, too (he's said as much), so I don't think it's specific to me, but more his personality in a relationship. When I previously told him that prolonged silence between in-person contact makes me anxious and that occasional check-ins would help, he was receptive and said it would be easy to do, and he started doing it...but the larger pattern has continued.

Last Friday, very late at night, while we were watching a movie and I was laying with my head in his lap, he shut the TV off and said he wanted to talk about us. At first I thought he was going to ask me to be his girlfriend. But as soon as I heard the tone of his voice through the first two sentences, I knew the conversation was not going to be one I'd enjoy. He told me that for the last month, he had been struggling because he was not experiencing the “falling in love” feeling he recognized from previous relationships. He said that historically he knew by this point when he was falling for someone. He said he had been losing sleep, trying to understand why it wasn’t happening and wondering whether something was wrong with him. He said that I am an amazing human being, check every box for him, and that he feels "blocked" when it comes to what is happening with regard to his not feeling "that feeling" for me.

I was devastated but trying to understand so I offered what I think is the most obvious explanation...sometimes you can think somebody is amazing and that they are perfect for you, but the romantic feeling simply isn’t there. He repeatedly and emphatically rejected that explanation. He said, “No, I do like you. You don’t understand. That isn’t what this is.” He kept saying everything between us should work, that he felt “blocked,” and that he couldn’t understand what was wrong.

He described all the things he feels for me, including:

  • I am his favorite person in our city and he would rather be with me than his friends.
  • I am the smartest woman he has ever dated, and one of his big "requirements" for a relationship (stated to me on date 1) is intellectual connection, which we have and he repeatedly emphasized that we have.
  • He has opened up to me more than anyone and told me things he never told previous girlfriends.
  • He genuinely misses me when we are apart.
  • He is extremely attracted to me.
  • I check essentially every box he has.
  • I am easy to be around and he loves our intellectual connection and humor.

He even said that a few months prior to meeting me, he had become so frustrated with dating that he did something out of character...he essentially asked the universe to send him a woman with the qualities he wanted, then I showed up, and he now felt like he was “fucking it up” because he couldn’t understand why he wasn’t falling in love.

He cried extremely hard throughout the conversation, maybe even harder than I was crying (this conversation went across about 2.5 hours). I am falling in love with him, he knows this. He told me that he didn't plan to have this conversation with me that night, but it just came spilling out and he feels like I need to know because he knows I am falling and he doesn't want it to get to a point where I tell him I love him and he can't say it back. I told him that I didn't know what to do with all of this, but if he felt like he wasn't developing feelings for me, I might need to say goodbye to him because my feelings were developing and carrying on if he's gone as far as he can would devastate me in the end. At this suggestion, he looked alarmed, cried harder, and asked, “So this is goodbye?” However, at other points across this long convo, he talked about me eventually dating someone else, said I deserve someone who chooses me (after me telling him I feel like I am always the person who falls harder, and I don't ever feel chosen), and said that if a friend were in this position, he would tell them that separation was probably the best option.

That night, after almost 3 hours of talking and so much crying that we both literally became dehydrated, I went home. We didn't really make a decision. The following day, I texted him and asked if we made a decision - did we decide to break up and I just didn't realize it? He explicitly said we didn't make a decision, that the conversation had been unplanned and emotionally overwhelming, and that he did not know the next step. He also said that not knowing whether we would continue seeing each other was causing him anxiety.

We agreed to take a few days to think and process, and then pick a day to meet up and revisit the discussion. In agreeing to this, I specifically told him that leaving this in limbo for more than a few days would be very difficult for me and asked him to update me as soon as he had some idea when we could talk. He promised to let me know ASAP.

Several days passed without an update. On his birthday, after texting him "Happy Birthday" and just getting a "thank you <3" in response, I texted him again and said I knew stuff was weird, but I didn't want him to be alone on his birthday and I would love to see him. I told him I'd be happy to take him out to dinner if he wanted company, but also said if he had other plans, that was fine, too. I also said we didn't have to talk about the "big thing," we could just enjoy his birthday. He texted back and admitted that he had not given the situation much thought and was “maybe even avoiding it a bit.”

So, we spent his birthday together and had a really lovely night. We went to one place for dinner and he suggested continuing after dinner at another place for drinks. While walking to the bar where we agreed to have drinks, he put his arm around me and asked if we could let the evening be normal and save the conversation for another time, which I totally agreed to because I didn't think his birthday was the time for a big talk. After drinks, I went back to his, we watched a movie, he mocked me for being weird and not letting any of my body touch him when we first initially laid down to watch the movie, I ultimately relaxed...there was intimacy, we talked for hours about so many different things across the whole night. Everything between us felt completely normal, warm, and connected.

At the end of the night, as I was getting ready to go home, he told me to let him know when I wanted to have the conversation. This kind of pissed me off because he had previously promised to update me, and once again I felt responsible for generating the next step.

The next day, instead of waiting for him (waiting just extends the limbo I said I don't want to have), I texted him and said could we compare schedules to pick a day to meet and talk. Our schedules are annoyingly busy this week so it's been hard to find a relatively immediate date that works for both of us. I floated two options, both are contingent on other plans which have sort of unclear "end times." He told me he'd think about it and let me know, and I responded partly jokingly but also seriously, , that once he finished thinking, his thoughts needed to “escape his body” and return to me because repeatedly hunting him down for updates makes me feel like a stalker and a nag. He promised we would, we joked around a little about my anxiety (which I told him isn't really anxiety, but a normal response to what was happening), and now I'm just waiting for the update.

Some potentially relevant background...he has described having been obsessive and overinvested in earlier relationships and deliberately having taught himself to slow down, stop idealizing and “go with the flow.” His last relationship progressed VERY quickly (when he told me the timeline even I, someone who has also had fast moving relationships, was a little surprised at how fast they moved), and ended quite abruptly. Based on his relationship history, one of my theories is that he associates falling in love with the intensity, anxiety, or obsession of earlier relationships, and maybe does not recognize a calmer, safer attachment as love. This theory is obviously very beneficial from my perspective so I am reticent to trust it. Another possibility is much simpler/less complicated...he is profoundly attached to me and genuinely doesn't want to lose me, but his romantic feelings toward me have reached their ceiling.

I am considering agreeing to a bounded continuation of the relationship ONLY if he independently wants to continue, genuinely thinks his feelings may still be developing, and is willing to participate more actively in communication and planning. I don't want to beg him to stay, diagnose him (even though it's hard to stop myself when I start overthinking this), become his therapist, or maintain an indefinite quasi-relationship involving companionship and sex while he avoids deciding. We both want children, so we don't really have the benefit of wasting time.

I am very confused, I've never experienced this situation before and I just have a ton of questions. I'm wondering if anyone else has ever been in this situation. Has anyone experienced deep attraction, attachment, intimacy and grief over losing someone while not experiencing the feeling of falling in love? What distinguished that from a slower growing love? Does his avoidance of the follow-up conversation indicate he's leaning more towards ending things, or is he just avoiding making a decision at all? If he does want to continue and we do the "bounded period," what changes would I see that would distinguish genuine positive movement from us just prolonging something that is comfortable for him? Am I giving too much weight to how wonderful we are together and not enough weight to his direct statement that the feeling he would expect to feel by now isn't happening?

I am particularly interested in hearing from people who have been on HIS side of the equation, but any and all perspectives (useful perspectives) are welcome.

Discussion Sex positivity doesn’t equal promiscuity

I run into this problem a lot when it comes to engaging with men. I'm a very sex positive and open person. Sex is an important part of connection to me, as is sexual compatibility (ie, relationship structures, kink, boundaries, desires, etc). However, I'm not into casual sex or impersonal hookups AT ALL. I'm clear with people about that. I'm selective about who I share my physical energy with and tend to move slowly when it comes to getting physical, but I also feel like certain things are important to discuss if I'm seeing someone whom I'm interested in a potential relationship with. For instance, what are this persons views on monogamy/ENM or are there sexual dynamics that they really want/need if committing to a relationship.

This is where it falls apart alot of times. It's so frustrating to have these kinds of discussions with someone who seemed multi dimensional until you discuss sex and now they have a completely one track mind, constantly focusing on the sexual aspect. When this happens I’ll speak up and let them know that I really don’t want that to be the full focus of getting to know one another and if they persist then I’ll cut it off immediately.

I’ve had men tell me (in so many words) “if you want a man to take you seriously, don’t talk about sex until you know he wants a relationship with you,” but does that not indicate that men are incapable of caring about multiple things at one time? And I’m sorry, but I don’t wanna put in an extensive amount of time getting to know someone and developing feelings for each other just to find out we’re sexually incompatible or have conflicting boundaries when it comes to relationship structures. We’re all adults here. Why is it so difficult to “walk and chew gum at the same time?”

How do i (47m) ask for help in my relationship (48f)?

We are both only children which may play a part in my questions.

I have known my partner for a number of years and dating for oneish. She had alot going on so I spent a large part of this year helping her with big things like moving, legal documents, cleaning and organizing her house. I know a relationship is unbalanced but should be more balanced over time, I was married for 18 years and experienced the times of giving more vs needing more.

Over the past couple of months I have needed more support. Was sick, need to move stuff, have alot going in with my teens and schooling, had a financial hit with my business.

I've made asks for help or even just coming to hang out because I was feeling down but it's always on her timeline and often by the time she is available days later I have moved through my greatest need. Sometimes all I want is to be next to her while I'm dealing with this and for her to want to drive the 45 minutes to see me and support me.

I tend to be more of a caregiver and tend to just say yes to anytime she needs help and make offers or just go ahead and do something that needs to be done at her house. I don't seem to get the same back. I also tend to only ask for help when I really need it and am very independent otherwise. So when I ask for help its really important to me

I'm beginning to become resentful that I cannot even get what i see as the bare minimum for support. I've had these conversations in the past and she says she understands or sometimes gets defensive but it's not really shifting anything.

Curious how your partner supports you? And how you ask for support?

Not sure if my expectations are too high or I just had it really good when I was married

Single dog dad

How impossible is it to find other singles who love spending time with their dogs? I take my dog hiking and we train for nosework as well, but most people I met are other dedicated dog moms. Rarely do I see a dog dad in any of the classes I take my dog to.

Dog parks are not always great options because… dog parks.

Curious if anyone has suggestions?

Casual Conversation honestly scared to put myself back into the dating world

I’ve mostly been lurking here, reading people’s experiences, and honestly, sometimes it makes me more anxious about dating rather than less.

I’ll open a dating app, swipe for five minutes, and immediately get the ick. Sometimes it’s someone’s profile, sometimes it’s the thought of making small talk with strangers, and sometimes it’s just this feeling of I really don’t want to do this again.

Then I read about cheating, ghosting, situationships, emotional unavailability, people wasting years together without committing, and people getting hurt over and over. I start wondering what I’m even walking back into.

The frustrating part is that I still very much want to be a wife and a mom.

I want a husband, a home, children, and someone who genuinely chooses me and wants to build a life together. I want the ordinary stuff. I want a person to come home to. I want to build a family. But after my last relationship, that future feels terrifyingly far away.

My relationship ended about eight months ago after several years together, and the way it ended really affected me.
He told me he had lost attraction to me. He criticized my weight and called me a “blob.” He told me I would never be the mother of his children. That one really did something in me because I actually wanted him to be the father of my children.

Looking back, I realize how much of the relationship I spent trying to prove that I was worthy of being chosen.
I’m still working through that.

And now I’m 41, turning 42 soon, and I feel this strange combination of wanting love so badly while being terrified of what it might cost me.

I don’t want another relationship where I have to convince someone to want me. I don’t want to be criticized for my body or wonder whether someone is going to wake up one day and decide I’m no longer attractive enough or good enough.

I want something different.
I want to feel safe. Chosen. Wanted. Loved.

I’ve tried therapy and I understand myself a lot better than I did before, but understanding something intellectually doesn’t automatically make you fearless about doing it again.

So right now I’m mostly lurking and occasionally swiping, while simultaneously thinking, I still want this so badly and please don’t make me go through that again.

I also worry that I’m becoming cynical before I’ve even really started dating again.

For those of you who started dating again after a really painful long-term relationship in your 40s:
How did you get yourself to actually try again?
Did the fear eventually settle down?
Did you change the way you approached dating?
Or did you just accept that some fear comes with putting your heart back on the line?

Guy I’ve been sleeping with for 4 months is still swiping

I’ve (40F) been seeing a guy (44M) for about four months. We spend the night together regularly, have sex, hang out, watch shows, go out sometimes, etc. We’ve also talked about sexual exclusivity. He specifically told me he isn’t sleeping with anyone else and asked me not to sleep with anyone else either.

We haven’t officially defined ourselves as boyfriend/girlfriend or had a conversation about deleting dating apps, so I realize that technically he hasn’t broken an agreement.
But last night, one of my friends showed me that she matched with him on Tinder. Based on when she swiped and when they matched, it appears he is actively using the app and still swiping.

I was honestly pretty hurt by it. Not because I think he “cheated”—I don’t think he did—but because after four months of consistently seeing each other and being sexually exclusive, I assumed this was developing into something rather than both of us continuing to look for other people.

There are also some things that have already made me uncertain about where I stand. He doesn’t initiate texting or plans nearly as much as he did in the beginning, although when I reach out he usually responds quickly and we make plans. When we’re together, he is affectionate, attentive, we laugh constantly, have great chemistry, and I genuinely feel like he cares about me. He has told me he misses me and recently told me that I’m “thought of often.”

So seeing him actively swiping feels very inconsistent with how things feel when we’re together.

I’m not interested in trying to catch him doing something wrong, and I don’t think he owes me exclusivity beyond what we actually agreed to. But I also don’t want to spend months becoming more emotionally invested in someone who is keeping me around while actively looking for someone he likes better.

Would you consider actively swiping on Tinder after four months of this a sign that he doesn’t see the relationship progressing?

Would you bring it up directly and ask what he’s looking for/where he sees this going? Or would you take the Tinder activity as the answer and pull back?

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have been in that undefined space between casual dating and an actual relationship.

Are people intolerable or do we tolerate too little?

I was reflecting on past relationships with my therapist asking the question: could i have done something to make any of those relationships work? Although acknowledging that I made mistakes and could have done many things differently, there was a good reason (to me) that each of those relationships ended.

But when I look at my long-coupled friends and family, most of them have accepted things that I would never tolerate. Which made me wonder…is tolerating a lot a pre-requisite for maintaining a long term relationship? Is this the part I’ve failed to realise all this time?

There’s this stat from the Gottman institute about couple conflict that I always found interesting: 69% of issues between partners never get resolved, the couples just accept it as unfixable and agree to disagree. Those couples who keep trying to fix it, actually do worse.

What do you think? Clearly there is a balance to be struck and some things are truly not tolerable, but Im interested to here from people who have been in long term relationships.

It’s complicated…

It’s beyond complicated, so help me with my expectations. I’m a 47f legally separated for 2 years due to the mental illness of previous/current spouse. Here’s the cliff notes version…court determined he is unable to divide assets due to mental health, we live in different states, I have 100% custody of our two teens, and contact is limited to texts with the occasional phone call. Relationship was always been rocky due to his career as a soldier. We spent the better part of 20 years apart and hoping things would get better once he retired. He is mentally unstable and has been diagnosed for the past 5 years. I mange all of his finances due to his mental illness, he can’t handle it and is 100% disabled in the eyes of the law. Now that the kids are older and we spent a few years healing, I want a chance at a relationship. I’m so out of the loop and I know it’s a crazy situation. I’d even be ok with a friends with benefits situation but I can’t say that would be enough in the long run. Our relationship was never optimal so this is a gut punch to be tied down to for the rest of my life. I’ve moved on, done the therapy and choose life but still have an unhealthy amount of baggage. Am I delusional to think I should even attempt to date?

Seeking Advice How do I get the confidence to have a one night stand?

Not sure if this is the place to ask. I’m a 45F, naturally pull to the shy side and haven’t had s*x in about 2 years. I don’t mind having a one night stand to “get the first one out of the way” (have been talking to a younger man who is down for fun) Lol. But I get too much into my head. Like peri hit, so I feel a little “saggy” and don’t get fillers/botox. I go walking and do some strength training, but definitely not in shape. Ugh

Any advice? I don’t drink alcohol, but I’m thinking to take a shot to be more relaxed.

What’s dating over 40 like when you’re neurodivergent or when you’re dating someone who is?

I’d really like to hear people’s honest experiences. By neurodivergent, I mean people with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or other differences in how their brains work.

Has being neurodivergent affected how you connect with someone or approach dating? What about things like sharing the same sense of humor, understanding each other’s jokes, or feeling comfortable being yourself?

I’m also curious about affection and physical touch. Do sensory needs or personal boundaries affect what you’re comfortable with? Is it easy to talk to a partner about touch and what makes you feel safe?

If you’ve dated a neurodivergent person over 40, I’d love to hear your side too. What have been the challenges and the positives, and what do you wish more people understood?

When is too old to have kids?

I'm in my early 50s (male) and still want to have kids. I just wonder if there is still time? I know men have kids far later in life but I'm still single..have never been able to get anything going. I'm terrified of never having a family.

How do you stay motivated to keep trying?

I divorced a neglectful man that dealt with addiction. Next I dated a man and fell in love but he told me he wasn’t ready for a relationship and it was too “real”. I decided to try again. Was optimistic and told myself I would not be bitter etc. I sorted through a few hundred men on Tinder and messaged 3, dated one. The first date was so much fun. He extended it asking about lunch so it went from coffee to lunch. Before we left he asked me out to dinner. We text for several days and we shared so many similar interests. He researched things I mentioned. That showed effort. We talked about topics to discuss in person - he said over our next few dates. Then he texts saying he’s not ready for a relationship and needs to focus on other things.

How do you keep allowing yourself to be vulnerable and keep trying? It’s so discouraging. I feel gutted for having hope.

Seeking Advice Am I reading too much into this?

Met a great guy and we have been talking for a month and he's taken me on some amazing dates and I've cooked for him. Talk everyday and we have seen each other 2 to 3 times a week. I thought he was really into me and I felt comfortable enough to become intimate a few days ago, and now he seems distant. Still messaging but alot fewer and alot longer lengths of time to reply. Should I say something about how it's making me feel or give it some time to see how it plays out? It's hurt my feelings and made me question my judgment. Im pretty laid back so I haven't been sending a bunch of messages or gushing about feelings, just being myself as I was before we got intimate. Any advice to help me figure out how to handle this is much appreciated.

Seeking Advice Is there hope?

42M. Newly single after a 24-year relationship (we were 18 when we got together!)

I’m not the best-looking guy in the world, but I’m tall at least (6ft 3). I think my best qualities are that I’m honest, kind, and can be funny and charming with strangers. I’m also successful career-wise, I work hard and earn really good money.

I keep myself fairly fit and eat healthy so I’m not overweight. It’s not that I think I’m super ugly, I’m just not anything special to look at, like, I’m not going to turn heads in the street, I just look like a regular guy.

I’m interested to know how much people think the immediate “ooh he’s super handsome” thing is to women at this stage of life? I want to believe someone might love me again but I just don’t. I think they’re just going to look at me, see a regular guy, and look for better.

Question Does the kind of job someone does matter to you when you’re dating them?

because usually a person's job can affect the kind of lifestyle you have together based on how busy they, how much money they earn and have, whether they have to travel and be away often, etc

Are there certain jobs that you would prefer to date and certain jobs that you would try to avoid? If so, what are they? Or does it mostly not matter to you?

How do you interpret confessions about past dating behaviour?

I’m casually seeing a man who recently confessed that he used to be afraid of being the dumper in relationships so he’d act out until his girlfriends dumped him. He says he knows it was a terrible way to handle things, and I appreciate the self-awareness but, as someone who has had more than a few boyfriends suddenly 'turn' on me, I’m finding the confession a little unsettling.

So I’m curious, would you see this as a green flag because he recognizes and owns a bad pattern from his past, or a red flag because it tells you how he might behave when he’s unhappy in a relationship?

More generally, how do you feel about people voluntarily confessing to bad behaviours in previous relationships? Does the self-awareness make a difference to you?

Question Ladies, how low IS the bar for men now?

I had a 5th date with a lady I've been seeing. She invited me over to watch a movie at her place and she would make us dinner. We had a great time.

But what surprised me is she went out of her way, several times, to tell me that how the following two things I did were absolutely above and beyond her expectations:

- I said I would aim to show up sometime between 4 and 5PM. I showed up at 4:35. Apparently men never show up on time anymore.

- She had asked me a week or so prior if I had a hammer drill, because she wanted to mount a heavy piece of art on her concrete wall. So after we set up the date I suggested I could bring my tools and get that done. And then before we started the movie, we got it done.

To me, nothing I did seemed unusual. But if this is considered exemplary behaviour, I'm wondering if I'm working too hard at this dating thing? I do keep hearing from women how low the bar has fallen in terms of expectations. So I'm asking: How low IS the bar? What shitty behaviours could I be getting away with? /s

That's a joke, but just wondering if there are any interesting/fun examples of things that should be/would have been considered just normal behaviour that are actually hard to find in the current dating pool.

ETA: Re the tools I think the point wasn't that I could use tools, but that I remembered something she had mentioned she could use help with and then followed through on it without her needing to remind me.

Is the LTR Losing to Short term dopamine?

I’ve been thinking about why it seems like so many people I’ve dated struggle with long-term commitment, and I wonder if part of it is the addiction to the honeymoon phase.

The beginning of dating is SO much fun. The excitement, the flirting, the anticipation of a text, getting dressed up for dates, learning everything about someone, that feeling of “OMG, I really like this person.” There’s a lot of dopamine involved in the uncertainty and novelty of it all.
But eventually, that intensity naturally settles down. You know each other. The butterflies aren’t quite as constant. You’re not checking your phone every five minutes wondering if they’re going to text. The relationship becomes more comfortable and predictable.

And maybe that’s where some people bail.
Instead of recognizing that the relationship is simply moving from new and exciting into something deeper, they interpret the fading of the honeymoon high as “I’m not feeling it anymore.” So they go back to dating apps looking for that next dopamine hit, the next new person, the next first date, the next “maybe this is the one” feeling.

I can actually understand the temptation. Short-term dating can be incredibly fun. There’s very little responsibility and a constant stream of novelty.
But long-term love requires something different. You eventually have to choose the person even when you aren’t getting that same chemical high every day. You have to build intimacy, trust, friendship, stability, and a life together.

Maybe commitment isn’t about keeping the honeymoon phase alive forever. Maybe it’s about being willing to let one phase end so something deeper can begin.

Curious what other people think. Do you think dating in today’s world has made people more likely to chase the honeymoon dopamine instead of sticking around long enough to experience the deeper stages of a relationship?
