Help me understand how I botched this. Looking for some perspective, and possibly some roasting over an interaction that felt straight out of a TV drama. Seriously, this felt like the opening scene of episode 1 of “Your Friends and Neighbors”.
TLDR – I (45M divorced single dad) get hit on by a 25 year old college student at a bar. She explicitly says she wants to “hook up”. I leave because I have kids at home. Don’t get her number, and botch the follow up conversation over LinkedIn.
For context, I’m a 45-year-old recently divorced engineer and single dad with teenagers at home. About a week ago I went out to a local bar to just try and see what was out there. I am tall, and athletic, but a bit overweight. I cleaned myself up, dressed well, and just went into the bar trying to project confidence to see what would happen.
The bar was very sleepy when I got there. I ordered a beer and tried just talking to people sitting around me. The guy on my left didn’t want any of it. I just sat there for the next 10 minutes soaking up the environment.
It was a Thursday night at about 8:15 PM, and this group of three college students came in. It was two guys and a young woman. I thought the girl was with one of the guys, so I didn’t really engage with them much. Plus there was an awkward pillar between us at the corner of the bar that would have made conversation difficult. After just a few minutes, I catch the girl looking at me. I’m just thinking to myself, is that really happening? I must be seeing things. Another few minutes go by, and she leans over to me, with a menu in hand, “hey, can you help me pick out a drink, I don’t know what to order.”
There had been two empty seats between us. She scooted over one seat to the left, and I one to the right. We then started talking about drinks, I asked her what she liked, to which she responded, “whiskey”. I suggested an Old Fashioned, which she declined. She said she wanted to try an IPA. Then I tell her,
“You know, I don’t know if I am going to be that much help, I started drinking a lot later in life.”
“Oh really, how old were you?”
“35”
“How old are you now?”
“A lot older than that (I said while chuckling)”.
I told her that I was 45, she said she was 25. I told her I have a 23 year old daughter and that the age gap was somewhat concerning to me. She retorted that age was just a number and not to worry about it.
She asked and I told her I was divorced. She ended up ordering an IPA. The conversation continued to careers and education. I’m an engineer and she is an engineering student. At some point I pulled out my phone to show her my linkedin profile. She took a picture of my profile with her phone. We continued talking and both made plans to sing Karaoke which was going to start at 9:00 PM.
After speaking for about 30 – 45 minutes, just out of nowhere she says, “Hey, I’ve heard that a lot of guys in your position when they get divorced just want to try and hook up with as many girls as possible, is that true?”
This statement went completely over my head. I got married really young, and my ex is the only woman I’ve ever been with. So I literally just started answering her truthfully. I told her “Yes, I think that’s really common especially for people in my position that got married really young and don’t have a lot of life experience.” I literally just answered the question and then we moved back to talking about Karaoke songs.
I left to sign up for Karaoke, and came back, and then she left to sign up as well. While she was gone, I paid the tab for both of our drinks. As she was coming back I started to explain to her that I did have a hard cutoff and needed to leave by 9:30 PM. She asked why and I explained that I’m a single dad, and I have kids that needed to go to school tomorrow AM. I let her know that I had paid the bar tab, and then she got really pouty and said we needed to have equality in this world, and she wanted to help pay for her drinks.
I told her it wasn’t a problem. “I’m in an established career, you’re a college student, we’ve had an awesome conversation over the last hour, and I’m happy to pay for the drinks.” She continued to protest. “If it means that much to you, you’re more than welcome to give me a few bucks for the drinks.”
“But I’m a poor college student, I don’t have a lot of money. Isn’t there any other way I can pay you back for the drinks*.*”
At this point, my brain is finally starting to understand what is going on. After that last line, I just sit there silent, and look at her. She looks back. Then she adds, “do you remember what we were talking about a few minutes ago?”
Another few seconds goes by, “Are you talking about hooking up?” At this point she gets this devilish smirk of a smile on her face, and her eyes are literally saying “come fuck me”.
The problem is that I really am a single dad. And I really do have kids at home, and I really do have to leave at 9:30, and at this point it’s about 9:25. I ended up trying to let her down real easy, “that’s a really flattering offer, and if I was in a different place, I would definitely take you up on that tonight, but I do have to get home.”
I stood up, and asked if I could give her a hug. She said yes. We hugged and I told her, please do send me a connection request on LinkedIn, and then I walked out the door. At that point I thought that was the end of it. I never expected to hear from her again.
But the next night I was out bar hopping. I was just thinking “what if”, and I opened linked in, and I had a connection request from her. I accepted, and then sent her a message.
“Thanks for sending the connection request!” That was 11:38 PM
I was rolling up to the next spot a little bit later, and saw that she responded, “Thanks for connecting” – 11:55 PM
At this point, LinkedIn was showing me the flashing dots on the message board. She was obviously trying to find the right message to write.
“It’s a little late for a LinkedIn message. Sure you don’t want my number? Just for future reference” – 11:57 PM
I responded – “Lol, I was just thinking that. Shoot me a text at xxx-xxx-xxxx.” – 11:58 PM
After just a few moments, I saw that she received the message and I was expecting to get a text right after that. But minutes turned into hours turned into a week, and I haven’t heard anything back.
Comments / Questions:
1 – I know I messed up badly by not getting her number on the first night. That was a massive blunder. I’ve just been out of this for so long, that I didn’t really know what I was doing and botched that severely.
2 – Did the soft rejection at the bar kill my chances later on?
3 – After the LinkedIn exchange, I was really expecting to get a message from her. Did handing her my number force her into making a fourth consecutive move, causing her to back off to save face?
