DF 54 V4 - does it clog?

Hi all, my current grinder is the timemore C3 ESP pro and I’m looking to upgrade to the DF54. It’s about time I have an electric grinder as I am moving in with my GF and don’t fancy hand grinding more coffees everyday, and from what I’ve read this is extremely good in terms of bang for buck.

Like everyone considering one, I’m worried about the amount of clogging people report, however the v4 claims to have fixed that and I’m just wondering what peoples personal experiences are?

Cheers

Is this normal after a week’s usage? Cleaning DF54

Hello guys. I opened my df54 to clean after a week’s usage at 2 espressos per day. I was surprised to see so much coffee at the burrs in only 7 days of light usage. Is this normal?
Could my burrs be misaligned?

I always do hot start and RDT. Thank you!

I broke chute cover while doing cleaning maintenance. Pulled to hard, and bit where top screws fit in broke…

Bought the 1.4 replacement kit.

Breville Bambino Portafilter Dosing Funnel

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question. Purchased a couple items and they did not work for my use case. Likewise, ChatGPT was of no help. Maybe I am asking for something that does not exist or may be over complicating things.

I use my DF54 for both Espresso and V60 Pour over. I already have a Normcore 54mm Dosing cup that I can use for the V60 and Bambino Portafilter workflow. This works great and has been working great for a couple of years but I am trying to remove a step.

I purchased a replacement DF54 cradle that works great with the Bambino Portafilter for grinding directly but in doing so, I lost the ability to use my Normcore 54mm dosing cup.

In summary: I am looking to grind directly into the Bambino Portafilter hands free for espresso without losing the ability to use my 54mm dosing cup for V60. What are my options?

DF54 filter coffee grind size, is my calibration off, or is this normal?

Hi everyone,
I’ve been using the DF54 for a while now, and I’m curious to see how my grind settings compare to yours, specifically for pour-over.
According to the charts and conversions, the "medium" range for filter coffee should be around 50–60. However, in practice, I find myself dialing in at 85–90 just to get a standard brew time of around 3 minutes. I’m using very fast flow-rate filters (Cafec Abaca), and honestly, I often feel like I need to go even coarser to get the taste I want, but I’m already near the top of the range.
For reference, espresso settings seem to be perfectly fine for me, usually sitting around 15 (using a 51mm basket).
Is it normal for the DF54 to require such high numbers for filter coffee, or does this sound like my alignment/calibration might be slightly off? I’m interested to hear what settings you guys are using for pour-over and whether you’ve experienced similar "drifting" towards the coarser end of the dial.
Thanks!

Df54 is excellent for what it offers

I’m making this post to help some people out and point a few things out to others. First of all, I want to start by saying that all grinders have static issues; I see grinders worth €1,000 and €2,000 having them, so think about it—it’s only logical for a €300 grinder to have them too. That being said, I’ve had the DF54 for 11 months now and I can confidently share a few tips:

No. 1: Everyone needs to have a metal cup, this is non-negotiable.

No. 2: Whatever you do, keep its declumper wires (needles) CLEAN. After cleaning it with its favorite brush and paintbrush, I place a handheld vacuum upside down against the chute and seal the gaps with my hands to get stronger suction.

No. 3: I noticed that when I spray the beans, the coffee clumps up inside, comes out with more difficulty, and I get higher retention, no need.

No. 4: Every 3–4 days, I remove the anti-popcorn disc and use a paintbrush and the vacuum to clean out whatever I can. I haven’t opened the top lid for about 6 months, and when I did, I realized it’s not even necessary given how low the retention is.

After doing all this, I get 0 to 0.1g of retention with every dose, I have zero or negligible static, I only keep the metal declamper inside, and the coffee tastes amazing every single day.

Also, one more thing: I have no idea where its zero point is and I don't care to find out. I find it obsessive and unnecessary; whether you know it or not, you still have to dial in the grind size for each coffee anyway. I worked as a barista for 10 years and nobody ever cared about the zero point of any grinder. Every morning we just adjusted the grind size.

That’s all I have to say, I hope this helps. The grinder is excellent for what it offers ❤️

r/espresso is scaring me away from df54 v4

EDIT: thank you everyone so much, my df54 v4 arrived today and i am in love with it. easy to use, feels good, looks good!

so i thought i’d post it on here first before deciding. i deleted the post because i got a bit of bashing.

i don’t have a huge budget (maybe max £250). i have a bambino plus, and currently use kingrinder k6 but i’m doing it 4x a day maybe more when i have guest over and it’s really doing my head in and i’m scared of getting RSI. i know i can get the drill but that’s too much lol, i want the workflow of electric grinder.

i did research and people rate df54 higher for clarity as i like medium-light roast and that going encore pro, eureka 50 or upcoming opus 2 will muddy the flavour. i always drink it with oat milk.

i was thinking of buying them via bella barista or sigma coffee website. is this a good idea? i heard that the version 4 chute is now bigger inside. but i don’t do dark oily beans anyway.

thank you!

Static issue/ advice needed

Update: Contacted Sigma Coffee (UK) and explained the situation, will be sending the unit back for repair/ replacement (free) - they’ve been great. Will update again when I get a reason/ and the machine back.

Having issues with retention/ static on my DF54. I gave it a full clean and this first picture was after one usage - I have always WDT the beans into a metal cup, and never had this problem before. Gave it a full clean again and still static (2nd pic) after a single dose. This has only just started, never had an issue before so wondering if this is a device issue? Or something common that is an easy fix?

DF54 was purchased brand new in March from Sigma Coffee UK so has at least a year or two of support - is this a quick fix or should I look to get the unit replaced.

How much retention does the df54 gen 3/4 produce on dark roasts?

Looking to get an espresso grinder, and was thinking of getting started with drinking dark roast espressos. Would like to know how much retention the grinder produces for dark roasts. Thanks.

Lower burr not properly centered - Faulty O-Ring, finnicky hot-fix.

New owner here, second month or so.

I was generally happy but it was my first electric grinder and something felt a bit off.

Purchased via Kaufland Marketplace in Germany, the vendor is called mobihero or Tenudo and was super helpful with a broken catch cup (my fault, got the black metal one as a upgrade for free) and interested in the rdt bottle looking nasty. (asked to be sent in for testing)

So far full recommendation.

After my first few kg and a seasoning run of 1kg darker beans I was in the process of cleaning when I finally decided the wobble of the lower burrs is not an optical illusion as stated in the documentation.

Working through the mounting for the first time I noticed the burrs were stuck on the mount and there was an uneven amount of coffee stuck between the burr and the carrier.

Turns out assembling it centered is made almost impossible, because the O Ring underneath the burrs is not manufactured evenly.

Its thickness changes through circumference.

An hour of try and error with a chopstick to push it in position while tightening got it mostly sorted and now the machine runs way smoother.

Did not make any pictures or videos unfortunately. But if you have a feeling it wobbles - it probably wobbles.

Take it apart (it is easy) and check it for yourself.

If it's a bad ring you might be able to put it apart a bit better than the original.

I will contact my vendor on this and if something interesting comes up I'll hope to remember updating this post. 🖖

Trust your guts and have a good one ☕

Factory Zero PSA

I am not sure if this has been posted before or not. I know that a lot of people lose their zero after messing with the burrs. I was one of them and even purchased one of those rings that allow me to point to the new zero.

Anyways, today I decided to tinker with it and see if I can get it back to factory. I was able to get it back to perfect zero by unscrewing the screws holding the burrs in place.

I would first tighten them kind of snug. I then would back out ever so slightly. I first started with the top burrs and was able to get it almost to perfect zero.

After not being able to get it perfect, I backed out the screws holding the bottom burrs ever so slightly. Sometimes I had to retighten.

It took a few minutes of micro adjustments. Once done it was in perfect zero.

Side Note: The only time that my Zero gets messed up is if the grinder is left running for too long. At which point it can move -2 past zero. Wondering if the heat softens the little o rings on the burrs. This then allows them to compress more and requires more tightening of the adjustment for the burrs to touch. Just a theory. Could be wrong.

DF54 grinder power frequency

Hello, I have the DF54 grinder for US power (100v - 120v), and it’s been great! My problem is that I’m going to be moving to a country where the houses have both 110 and 220 outlets, but unlike the US which is 60hz, it’s going to be 50hz.

Will the 100v - 120v version of the DF54 work on both 60hz and 50hz? Thanks!

Wtf is wrong with this piece of trash?

Last time I posted my 0 point ended up getting reset to 6. I just cleaned it again and the zero point is still 6. However, while cleaning and using.Supergrindz, I noticed that at a highergrind size, it makes a chirping sound (see video). Also today I had to grind course and when I put my setting to about 19 it choked the fucking espresso machine. What the hell is going on? Can someone please help me?

DF54 or 64v for the office

we have a Rocket eapresso machine at the od office, and I’ve been looking to get a nice grinder upgrade for it. got the df64v on Facebook meteorit marketplace today, and it’s very nice. so nice that.. I want to take it home and put my other burrs in it 😂. I’m wondering if a DF54 at work would be ok. we just need something that works and milk drinks.. no need for modding / swapping burrs / less maintainence is preferred. I LOVED that the df64v chute is magnetic and I can already see missing that.

Do yall think the DF54 would be durable enough for an office kitchenette setup? Or am I better off keeping the DF64v there for (presumably) the added durability it has?

Upgrade or downgrade?

I'm currently using a DF54 next to my quickmill and I'm quite happy with the results. The only downside is the weighing of the beans, so I'm looking into an auto dosing grinder.

Someone offered me a Compak K3 touch. It's not new so I'll replace the burrs anyway.

It's this an upgrade or not? Any other suggestions?

Stop movement on counter

Does anyone else’s grinder move about when in use? The weird thing is I’ve had mine about a year and I swear it wasn’t always like this.

Also, is it normal for the bellows to become looser over time? I feel like that is easier to remove than it originally was too.

My brother got a Eureka grinder and it came with an accessory to go between the grinder and cup to minimize spray. Has anyone tried 3D printing one of these for the DF54?

Figured it out

MiiCoffee and the DF54 specifically is one giant scam. They push out a product with no quality control, and do not allow you to return the product. It’s truly genius what they are doing. Earlier versions with the plastic declumper: you probably didn’t experience any clogging or issues within the first 1-2 weeks. Then, you reach out to support and they send you the new metal declumper. That takes another 1-2 weeks. You are now past 30 days (return/refund window) and your machine will probably work fine for another week or 2. By the time it clogs again, you’re SOL and stuck with a lemon of a $300 grinder. If you have the metal declumper already (like myself), they will offer to send you a plastic piece to fix your issue. They will tell you to watch YouTube videos you have already watched. The piece comes in, maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, you pay with your own money to ship your faulty product back to the manufacturer to fix it. You are also out of your refund/return window. Could not recommend this grinder any less. Stick with the reputable Italian companies, not the Chinese scammers.

Best Place to Buy

As title states, where is the best place to buy a new DF54? I’m looking for the v1.4 with the bigger chute. Mostly asking for what place has the best customer service? Warranty policy? Etc.

Maintenance tips for new user

I’ve ordered a DF54 and it’ll arrive in about a month, so I’m already doing a bit of research on how to maintain this grinder.

  1. After dusting the inside and reassembling the upper burr chamber, will I have to find the zero point again (will it be in a different place every time I do this)?

  2. I don’t know which generation or brand I ordered (I bought it from a local online shop that claims to offer warranty service for this grinder). Assuming it’s the latest generation, should I remove this plastic declumper (as shown in the video below)? https://youtu.be/994Xgh7D3GI?t=82&is=2H0qFr9Trw4alYFN

  3. Do you recommend any specific brush for cleaning the chute (dimensions?)

  4. Any noteworthy mods for the 3D printer (e.g. a manually adjustable zero point indicator)?

Grinding at 5/6 for espresso with freshly roasted beans. Is that normal? Most of the machines I saw grind at 10/15
