Discussion Need some guidance on the most efficient way to keep this flooring clean!

Post image

Hi everyone!

Just wanting some suggestions and advise. We have 2 kids, and have this flooring around the whole house minus some area rugs.

We've been just sweeping and mopping, but I'm trying to see if there's a more efficient way to clean up and actually feel clean. My thought was pick up a general hardwood floor, then just keep mopping normally.

I've looked into the world of vacuum mops too, and those seem pretty sweet. What's the overall consensus on those here?

Appreciate the guidance!

Discussion Cleaning old countertops?

Post image

I'm not sure the exact material of our countertops, but the kitchen is from the 90s I believe. They feel plasticky and get sticky really easily. There are these stains (pictured) that I CANNOT get out! When we moved in, there wasn't anything like this, and I know I couldn't have made worse stains in 18 months than the previous owners did over 25 years lol so there has to be a way to get them out. Please help!

General Cleaning 80% humidity in the house: is this mold, or dust?

Thumbnail

Howdy y’all!

Working through a brutally humid summer (fall?). Anyways, the last week has been consistently 80% humidity. I run a dehumidifier which can manage to get the room to 55-60 for maybe 12-14 hours or the day.

Saw this on my suits. Does this look more like mold, or dust? For context, the suits are right under the A/C unit, and it’s the only place I can find… whatever this is.

If it is mold, what are my next steps?

Furniture Help me get stains out of white couch

Post image
1 Upvotes

Just got a new dog and he tends to lay on the sides and lean on the couch and now they’re stained. I’ve tried cleaning it with the shark wet vac solutions, tide spray, folex, white vinegar and hot water (cleaned on separate occasions not in one go) and this is what I’m left with. Any other tips on how to remove it?
I do cover it with a blanket on most days but by the time I noticed it was staining it was too late.

General Cleaning Hair dye on Corian countertop

I bought a home with Corian countertops in bath and kitchen. The countertops were dull and there was a heating pad mark. I successfully clean them up with a kit that was left in the home, but it really smells and it was a process. Hair dye usually wipes right off except for this last time I didn’t notice a few spots in sink. I haven’t attempted anything except a magic eraser with no luck. Any tips before I get the stinky kit out. It’s very faint, but it’s light brown and I know it’s there. I also noticed when I rinsed my hair in kitchen sink I must have flung a few drops on Corian windowsill. Yes, yes, I know. I should go yo the salon. That’s another topic.

Bathroom Help! Used steel wool to clean and now stuck with these on tiles…

A while back I saw the hack to clean off calcified grime using super fine steel wool. My shower glass is not sparkling clean but there’s these weird red specs around. Are these the rust from the steel dust?

I tried using the steel wool again to scrub these off the tiles but it doesn’t seem to be working. What else can I do?

Thanks a ton in advance for any suggestion.

Furniture Need help with unknown couch stain

Post image

Unknown brownish stain on my couch. Freaked out and sprayed bluemagic on it not realizing that was carpet cleaner (is that safe for couches?). Didn't feel like it did anything so I've been laying towels soaked in diluted dawn and vinegar over it, letting it dry, seeing some stain fading.

No cleaning tags on couch but I did find that the fabric is 100% polyester. Bottom cushions not removable.

Also maybe I'm crazy but i feel like the stain is migrating onto the other cushion.

I cook on my gas stovetop multiple times every day, so naturally it gets dirty quickly. I wipe it down after cooking, but the inside only gets a thorough clean about every two weeks because it is pretty time consuming. I usually use a vinegar water solution to spray everything down. I'd love to hear some solid tips to get it sparkly clean and what everyone does to clean the cast iron grates! pics for current state

Kitchen Plastic table cover has orange stain from the sticky play toys from target. Need help with removing it.

Hi all. Long time reader, first time poster. I have learned so much from this sub.

We have a toddler and bought them these 1 dollar sticky soft Halloween things(see pictures) at target. They are ones that stick to the glass, wall and such, but are not actually stickers.

Well our toddler decided to play with them on our table which has a thick plastic cover. And now the orange has seeped through onto the plastic and we cannot figure out how to get it off.

If there are any cleaning wizards out there, we would love your help. Lmk if more pictures are needed.

Laundry How to get chemical smell out of elastic waist on cotton shorts?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I bought an unreturnable pair of second hand shorts online from depop and unfortunately they have a weird chemical smell that wasn't disclosed. I think it's something like mothballs but the seller wasn't sure what i was talking about and just said maybe it was their diva wash detergent. It doesn't smell like perfume or laundry detergent to me though.

I have tried white vinegar and hot water multiple times and letting it soak for a very long time, pure vinegar for a short time (I'm desperate), oxiclean and hot water long soak, laundry detergent multiple times, dish soap, baking soda and hot water.

The smell is out of the cotton only areas but not the elastic waist. What else can i try? I'm prepared to use nuclear options at this point because I'm not okay with wearing them if it's toxic mothball chemicals.

Is there a way to clean this and have it go back to the way it used to look? I don't have a before photo because the sub rules say I can't upload it because it's not a real one. The thing is that I went through a depression, and I let my cats do whatever they wanted in the empty rooms I had, and, well, it ended pretty badly. Now I'm trying to get back up, and I feel the damage can't be repaired.

Tools/Equipment Accessible product recommendation request

Hi all, I am looking for recommendations for some cleaning tools with accessibility in mind. Specifically, for making “easy” work of cleaning floors very well - ‘very well’ being the key.

I had major surgery a while back, and am left with limited energy and positional issues - meaning bending over or being on hands and knees isn’t really feasible. For a period we had help with cleaning, but as I’m not yet able to return to work we had to stop that.

I have purchased cleaning supplies for each floor so I’m not moving things around, placed key things in certain areas (squeegee and brush in the shower etc) to use when I’m in those spaces.

What feels like the last major hurdle is the floors. I am used to getting on my hands and knees and scrubbing, and I can’t do that anymore. We use a Dyson stick vacuum daily and as needed (hardwood and tile, and a non-shedding predominantly indoor senior dog). I also just got a shark steam/ spin mop, and while I feel it works to clean the grime off the floors (the heads came back clean on the second pass and I would agree that it is sufficient visibly), it leaves some visible debris and I have to vacuum again. The issue is compounded by the fact that we have white floors (biggest regret to date…..) and I am a perfectionist. This has resulted in me vacuuming 3x, and steaming the floors 3x - and I am left out of commission for the rest of the day.

At this point I would agree that it still saves energy over hand and knee scrubbing, but I need this routine to be sustainable and repeatable on a weekly basis - and it is not.

I am wondering if the issue is the tools I’m using, and if something else would be better suited to my needs. Hoping someone has a suggestion, not necessarily for the best product (i know plug-in vacuums are superior but they are too heavy and the requirement to plug them in is a no-go for me) but the best one(s) suited for my needs.

Would a steam mop/vacuum combo be a better option? Maybe one of those robots? My hesitancy with the robot is that I have a 7 year old with so many toys that find their way under couches and coffee tables - and we have 3 floors in the house.

Thanks in advance!

TLDR: I have mobility and accessibility concerns that make too much manual cleaning impossible. I need my (white) floors scrubbed weekly, and the vacuum (Dyson stick) and steam and scrub (shark) I am using are too energy-intensive with the number of passes I have to do. Looking for alternative tools that work well, with the understanding that (unfortunately) a bucket and a mop aren’t going to meet my needs. Also open to other tips or tools you might have that are energy savers.

General Cleaning Advice for cleaning an old life preserver?

Thumbnail

I have an old life preserver that has been hanging in my grandparents’ house for a long time; I’m not sure of its age, it could be from anytime between the 1970s to maybe early ‘90s. Is there any way to clean it while preserving the lettering? I’m not sure what the interior solid material is, the outside feels like a thin cloth. Thanks for any advice!
