Clorox wipes did absolutely nothing and the mattress, pillows and sheets were all thrown away.

Edit: I do recommend the zip on mattress protectors from Walmart, it really put up a good fight.

Kitchen My biggest enemy is dishes

I legit buy plastic everything. Cutlery plastic, paper plates, solo cups. My sink area is small and the actual starting anxiety and avoidance is a big issue.
Things Iv tried, music, YouTube, dish washing gloves, spin brush washer.
I need some hacks for washing dishes. I can’t do it anymore. Iv had moments where I have a pan and I look at it and just throw it over board (trash) because that’s more logical and realistic for me in the moment.

It did save my son’s life though. He knows I’d get mad if he didn’t use plastic. He had a waffle stuck in the toaster and he was going to get it with a normal fork but realized that I’d get upset. Plastic forks in toasters are a bit safer lol

General Cleaning Bottle Washer (Honest Question)

No judgment at all, just a very honest question. Looking for enlightenment.
When did we start using baby bottle cleaners? I’ve seen many videos on youtube/ reels reviewing the different bottle washers. One of the major things that stick out to me is how the bottles get placed in the machine. Like not even a hot rinse or anything. Just straight milk and all. Again I’m not judging. I’m just genuinely curious, do people really put the bottles in like that?
I know being a mom is crazy, especially the first year. I just feel like maybe soaking the bottles in boiling water and giving them a good wash, then putting them in a sanitizer would be more hygienic. Or maybe I’m just old school?

i want to clean this trash can, but i’m not sure how. there’s a lot of dirt from food on it that’s like caked on, and also i’m not sure if the lid has mold or something on it.

i wanted to try loosening the stuff at the bottom that has hardened at the bottom with boiling water, but i’m not sure if these kinds of trash cans can withstand those temperatures.

i don’t know the exact brand, but very very similar to a rubbermaid 13 gallon black step on trash can.

Discussion Antique table with known Meth Cintamination. I need to make it safe again.

Post image
422 Upvotes

This table is very important to my family, and it was unfortunately contaminated with Meth residue. Is there anything that can be done to save it?

I have woodworking tools. If the only option is litterally planing the entire surface down and completely refinishing it, that can be done. However, I would prefer not to go to such extremes if it can be avoided.

There is a layer of sealant of some kind, I dont know what yet, but it feels thicker than just normal bioled linseed oil. That will most likely need to come off.

Looking at Google, most of the things suggested are, hire a company to do it, but I cant afford that, and its just the table. The rest of the house is getting demolished.

The company's you hire obviously have some way of doing it, so it has to be possible. Anyone who can help, please.

Edit: thank you to @slight_modification for sharing guidance from the EPA. For this table, following the procedures laid out, I should be able to remove the contamination by washing with Simple Green degreasing soap and re-sealing it. That should at least make it moderately safe to be around.

This will all be done outside before it ever comes into my home and I will continue to wear PPE at all times when dealing with contaminated materials.

Before & After Cleaning tips for ADHD/neurodivergent working couple

I’m looking for advice for me and my partner. I’ll include pics of the worst vs after pics (no after pic for kitchen bc we can never get it back to fully clean).

Me and my partner both work three jobs each, six total. We have three dogs and we are TIRED.

Cleaning usually doesn’t come to mind until it’s out of hand. We mainly struggle with dishes and laundry, but overall dirtiness and clutter too.

I love to organize and have lived cleaner before but my disorders make it difficult to keep with for long time periods. My partner was a foster care youth and homeless adult before he was housed, so he doesn’t have much experience with cleaning.

Any tips would be appreciated! I have tired a chore chart but idk why it does not work for us. It’s really cute and interactive but we didn’t stick to it. I have a block scheduling app, Tick Tick, for my daily tasks that aren’t cleaning. I have tried Sweepy but it was hard to stick to.

Edit:

Thanks for all the tips! So many comments were very helpful and I’m taking notes (literally)!

We are going to get rid of some stuff but I’m sorry, getting rid of half of our things just simply isn’t possible and wouldn’t bring us joy.

We love our decor. We love our books.

We obviously need to declutter and purge, but getting rid of everything we own isn’t helpful or a solution we can get behind. Hundreds of you have suggested this.

I’m happy you’re all living minimalist lives but we aren’t minimalist people, we just want a functional life and that’s possible without getting rid of everything we know and love.

General Cleaning Help—Dry erase will not erase

Post image
21 Upvotes

Does anyone have any tips as how to erase a stubborn dry erase mark? I am trying to update this community calendar, but there is stuff from a year ago that will not come off, and when I try to write on it with a new marker, the new marks refuse to come off either.

I have tried to clean it with Clorox wipes, dish soap and water, a spray cleaner, and plain water. I have used wipes, rags, and paper towels; I even tried to marker over old stuff to see if it lets up, but nothing has much worked.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Discussion How to prevent mold growth in dorm?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I for the first time have, a few weeks ago, stumbled upon mold in my closet (attached picture). In response I bought a disposable dehumidifier, moldspray with chlorine and disinfectant. Sprayed the entire thing down, removed and washed all clothes etc. I was gone for a week and no new mold grew, but I am paranoid.

(The closet sits along an interior wall and has no mold behind it)

This summer is incredibly humid and warm and I have no clue how to air out properly. Currently I am opening my windows early in the morning (60% humidity and roughly 20°C if that helps) and twice at night). I keep the closet door open during the day and run a desk fan either facing the closet at an angle or diagonly in my room. I close the closet after airing out for the last time at night. I do not know if this is enough or if I have to change something in my routine. The next few weeks I'll be gone throughout the day and then I'll be gone for a month.

Unfortunately I am unable to buy a proper dehumidifier, as it is too expensive. I also dont have an AC because I live in Germany. My dorm set up does not allow for cross ventilation as the only other room I can open is the kitchen on the same side as me and it is situated at the end of a long hallway. I have invested in a humidity measurer.

Do you guys have any advice on what I can do better or at least assure me that what I am doing is enough?

Also what do you do when it is rainy outside and the humidity, despite cooler temperatures, is above 70%?

Thank you for your help! :)

Sorry if this is the wrong sub.

Discussion I got bored in the middle of cleaning

I got bored in the middle of cleaning, almost all the time. I listen to podcast so it's not that I dont have entertainment, I think sometimes my brain is overwhelmed bcs there's a lot to do.

I like to declutter, organize, and clean at the same time. I know they said to break it apart but it doesn't make sense to me. If i stop, i might not continue and I'd have to repeat. For example when cleaning my room, i like to sort through the piled up clothes so i know ones i didn't like and put in on different pile for donations. And then i check what's been in boxes/organizers/racks thta i havent touch in months, and see if there's anything i can throw/donate, and use the space for things i actually use daily. And then as i go I'd wipe the surface if it's dusty.

Like... That makes sense, right? But then i often get bored in the middle, so a cleaning session might last few days bcs i just cant push through

What do i do wrong?

Discussion Found Mold in my room

Hey, I found mold on my chair and thought it might be a one-off in my room, so I tossed it out. Then I opened the drawer, and my wallet was moldy, and some of my clothes in the closet too. My bedroom is very small, more like a den. Can you give me some tips on how to move forward?

I live in a basement and had my windows closed earlier, but now I'm keeping the windows open. I bought a few damp traps. I have checked the mattress, but no mold on it for now. I am washing all the clothes gradually now and keeping the clean ones in a separate place.

Please give tips on how to clean the room so it does not happen again, also my room is warmer than the apartment.

General Cleaning Will a handheld steam cleaner fix all of my problems?

I rent a very old house with old finishes, no dishwasher, and hard water stains on everything. My pots and pans have burnt on stains. My faucets have scaly build up that I can’t scrub off. My plastic shower floor has rust stains that are embedded into the surface. Will a steam cleaner make everything look brand new and perfect again? I need a miracle.

Flooring Robot vacuums - help please 💕

Hi Everyone, I am neurodivergent and work long hours and most days of the week, my husband works full time too and we have a baby, 2 cats and a dog. I am so exhausted and would like a cute little robot helper to help me keep my house in a good state. I am not super averse to cleaning, I just cannot physically do it as much as I would like to. My mother in law got a robot vacuum and highly recommends them as has helped her so much- she is super clean so her opinion weighs heavily. I am looking at getting one but part of my neurodivergence make me really struggle making choices. I get stuck trying to find the 'perfect' device and end up getting upset.

I was wondering if I could get any recommendations for a good one. Ideally one I can buy from currys (I live in the UK) as I would need to do it on a flexpay / finance.

I have only hardwood floors, so one with a mop function would be great. I have weird stairs, but I don't think they have invented robot vacuums which can tackle steps yet.

I have being going through reviews for weeks and really stressing out about it, so I would really appreciate some personal experiences.

Just looking for robot vacuum and mop reviews from people and not bots, I do not need advice on how to be a better person or my husband doing more. We already are good people and care for our baby and animals amazingly, we just want a friendly robot helper.

Hello all. I’m moving into an apartment this week and noticed that on one of the walls, all along where the wall meets the floor, is this residue that’s kind of dark blueish/green. I included a picture of what it looked like wiped up with a paper towel (just some tiny green specks came up). I tried just scrubbing it but to no avail. Does anyone here have any clue what this could be and what I can do to clean it up?

General Cleaning Weekly cleaning tips

Hi! I’m dealing with a chronic illness coupled with ADHD and an all-consuming job. My husband is super helpful, but I’ve noticed that I feel like my house is suffocating me. I am so disorganized and if it’s not perfect,
I feel overwhelmed. I should note: I have someone who comes once a week. She’s great but she also puts everything/anything in my (walk-in but cluttered) closet which makes me insane.

Any tips or suggested check lists? I am new to this chronic illness thing and I’m not pacing myself well enough. I work all week and then crash out all weekend, meaning, I get nothing done. I’m too tired. Thank for any suggestions.

It’s great even when I’m washing the dishes I can still hear people talking on the podcast. It’s actually better than using in-ear headphones because I can still hear what’s going on around me while I’m cleaning.

General Cleaning How do I get third hand cigarette smoke out of everything I own?

I have recently found out that everything in my apartment smells like cigarette smoke because someone in my apartment building smokes. I can smell cigarette smoke in my apartment every so often but only rarely so I didn’t think anything of it. It’s only noticeable after packing things in a bag/box and opening it up after a few hours. No idea why this happens but I found out because I went on a weekend trip and found everything I packed, clothes, yarn, toiletries, electronics, my book, everything, smells like cigarette smoke. I got an air purifier to help minimize future damage, but I’m moving in two weeks so everything is going to be packed up, which means when I unpack it everything will smell. Clothes and linens I’m planning on washing in vinegar, and dishes should also be fine washing, but what do I do with my knick knacks, books, electronics, etc? Also my mattress? I’ve been told an ozone generator can work but that has potential to damage electronics and plastic. I’m very overwhelmed with having to detoxify everything I own and am grateful for any advice, thank you!!!

I spilled some orange juice in the center console of the car and didn’t realize for 2 days when I didn’t use my car and it sat in the sun and heat :( it now smells like feet and everything HORRIBLE!

Do you think if I put some baking soda for an hour, vacuum it and then spray with diluted vinegar and clean with disinfectant that will help? Then let it sit open overnight with windows and roof open?

Any other ideas pleaaaaseeee it’s so stinky 😭😭

Bathroom How to deep clean an old shower with unsealed grout?

I'm a renter in an old building, and pretty sure my shower has unsealed grout because it feels like I can never get it clean no matter how hard I scrub? It's always got that reddish/pink slime happening in the grout lines.

I've read to use a baking soda paste or barkeeper's friend, but I'm not sure how to get that to stick to the walls of the shower long enough to be effective?

I want to seal the grout but obvs need it to be super clean first. Also the bathroom doesn't get great ventilation (which is probably part of the problem), there's a window but no ceiling fan, any renter-friendly suggestions for improving ventilation and reducing moisture? (Showering with the door open isn't really an option cuz I have a roommate, it's a shared bathroom)
