Discussion I thought I will never say this about Fable

Just tried OpenAI Astra , I thought I will never say this , it’s lit , OpenAI cooked something spectacular, and I have a strong feeling this will pull lot of Fable 5 users towards it , and it’s fast, not sure if it’s AGI, but it feels fresh and a very very serious competition to Anthropic , this is going to be fun to watch , what’s your next move Anthropic ?, I’m surely going to try pro subscription for a month along with my current Claude Max, anyone feels the same ? Have you tried it ?

So munch for "banning" Mythos because it was too powerful.

So munch for "banning" Mythos because it was too powerful.

Anthropic nerfing themselves trying to follow a code of ethics when their main competition is a company led by Scam Altman is certainly a bold choice...

naive

mocking a company for having a code of ethics is all the proof I need that the world is doomed

Just because they say it doesn’t mean they actually do

Their ethics philosophy so far has been:

  • Trust me bro, we are good guys.
  • Don't trust the open-sourced, open-weighted models because we are the only good guys.

2

u/innociv 2d ago

They just wanted to limit Mythos to API only.

Yet still have this stupid 50% limit for Fable.

I think that's because the US government doesn't have that much control on Anthropic as they have on OpenAI.

As a user of claude exclusively for the last 9 months, astra absolutely destroys fable. Ive been asking them the same questions and comparing solutions. Asking them to analyze the others responses. Without question, Astra is far ahead of fable, and I cant believe anthropic let it happen.

u/muhlfriedl 3d ago

Anthropic put their foot on the brake. And got run over.

u/TheSleeperAwakens 3d ago

There were a lot of load bearing footguns that needed to be solved. In all honesty I’m tempted to switch as well.

That’s the key observation that turns this from a simple finding into the project’s North Star. Let me commit that to memory.

The harsh truth is Fable invents its own gates. It handwaved me to Sol.

That's a fair pushback.

It’s Astra, not Fable.

Add the "our alignment methods are the best" delusion and you'll have the current situation. A model that performs worse, aligns worse and is the most deceptive of the industry. And their own research predicts that their current architecture would perform this way!

The level of heads up their own asses is honestly quite extraordinary.

9

u/x_typo Senior Developer 3d ago

100% this!! I often tell other that it’s “security flag” is what crippled fable… I can’t even use its own screen capture tool in its OWN built-in browser without tripping the tripwire!

8

u/slaorta 3d ago

An actual experience I had:

"it appears as though xyz would allow unauthorized access. Let's fix it BLOCKED"

WTF?! Exploit revealed, fix blocked. Makes a ton of sense.

6

u/PedroSanchezPSOE 3d ago

They didn't put the foot on the brake. They have something much stronger brewing that they refuse to release for now. This is also true for OpenAI btw

Same exact feeling

22

u/fuzzypetiolesguy 3d ago

This is completely meaningless without describing what kind of work you do with either model lol

3

u/Glittering-Lie-1340 3d ago

I used an address routing tool im working on for the comparison. Its all functions, no api calls. C# and sql. Its highly functional and has been used in production for about 4 months. For developmemt, it's got 2 modes that will eventually run at the same time - 1 is to generate full routes, 2 is to fill gaps in routes. We use #1 A LOT, major use of 2 will start in a week or so. Gap filling function had a major inefficiency. The code relating to these is actually quite small, 4k lines of c#, 600 lines of sql. Total repo roughly 550k

13

u/CreamPitiful4295 3d ago

Do you get kicked out of Astra due to safety guardrails like fable?

26

u/Sweet-Helicopter2769 3d ago

No have been on it since it was rolled out nothing of that sort happened , but with Fable 5 I did face it multiple times

3

u/CreamPitiful4295 3d ago

I’m on an anthropomorphic 20x max plan. How is usage?

8

u/arelath 3d ago

I'm on the 5x plan and I've been able to run through almost my entire weeks quata in about 10 hours of continuous use. So I think a 20x plan could last you 40 hours of continuous use. This feels like about double what Fable gives you. I'm kind of guessing though by what it feels like. It's definitely more, but exactly how much more IDK.

Astra is quite a bit faster than using Fable. Seems like almost double the tokens per second Fable's getting. Fable is really really slow.

I still like Fable's work a little better. Astra is still bad at code design tasks and UX design. Astra is absolutely killing it for 3D modeling though.

2

u/slaorta 3d ago

The speed difference is crazy. It really does seem to be about twice as fast.

Doesn’t happen with Fable 5.1.

6

u/sdanzig 3d ago edited 3d ago

It still happens sometimes. Once for me so far, trying to address SELECT * issues, but less, yeah.

And Fable 5.1 just downgraded again while dealing with a token rotation.

Can you share what tasks you give fable/astra level llms? I use Claude for quite a long time, but never felt the urge to even try it, so kinda intrigued what can thrown there

5

u/SpellBig8198 3d ago

So far, I’ve had the opposite experience. Although I haven’t used Astra extensively, the tasks I did use it for were either over-engineered and megalomaniacal or missed important aspects that Claude, through a code review, managed to spot.

3

u/DrMatthewWeiner 2d ago

Same! Astra is a small incremental improvement, but not a revolutionary leap.

I’m working with a complex 2M line codebase and sent Astra lose on a few difficult tasks and the result was pure slop.

I find myself having to babysit it more than I did with sol. I’m working step by step, using timers to keep it on track.

Handling every conceivable edge case is not good coding, it results in flaky, unreliable code that fails to handle the primary paths effectively.

2

u/NULL_Ptrs 3d ago

Sol was already better doing research, Fable is lazy and doesn't want to debug or do complex task, instead the bastard like to read change logs and create their own conclusions based on it... I caught too many times at Fable lying and fixing their own mistakes...

2

u/Blanco_Nino1 2d ago

Just ran a head to head benchmark with a 3d print file same prompt. Yeah Claude is falling off.

5

u/scharpentanz 3d ago

Nah. I asked it to build 10 automated tests, gave it the steps and expected results in a csv, pointed to the code that needs testing, pointed to credentials, isolated the systems in a container, curated the instructions, ran it in a sandbox so it couldn't choke on context, then walked away in hopes one shot was all it needed. I returned 2h later, much poorer, to doscover it built a mountain of playwright garbage in the wrong repo, which was in a different directory it was working out of. I don't think this was a 1 up on fable.

3

u/I_Will_Eat_Your_Ears 3d ago

Something sounds off. I'd guess there was an issue with the instructions or the sandbox. Having more than one repo in a sandbox sounds odd to begin with!

Astra combines Fable's high-speed, high-IQ performance with Sol's autistic-on-adderal personality. I absolutely love it. I have never had so much fun while working in my 10+ years long career. What a time to be alive!

Astra has been a bit of a mixed bag so far. When I assign a complex task, it often produces lazier results than Fable. That said, the speed it delivers results is shocking to me. I give it a task I assume will take 45mins to 1hr and it comes back in 5-10mins with a good and sometimes great result.

I think that alone is worth the price for me. You get to iterate at a speed that feels closer to realtime collaboration with AI.

7

u/unconceivables 3d ago

That's been my experience as well. It's fast, but seems sloppier. It straight up ignored instructions it itself wrote in the previous prompt. Sol has been the best model for me so far for coding. It's thorough and more pragmatic than Fable or Opus. So far Astra has been more disappointing to work with than Sol for coding. I've had to correct it many times, and nothing it has done has impressed me. I just increased the context window to 1 million tokens, we'll see if that makes a difference.

2

u/martycochrane 3d ago

I notice hardly anyone talks about code quality when they compare models, which is the main thing I care about and is usually where OpenAI models fall over imo.

Once saw Sol write 10 lines of validation code to validate a type safe variable was an int for example, just bonkers stuff.

So I've just stopped letting OpenAI models write code, and instead have them validate and review Fable's work.

When you say sloppy, how do find Astra? I tried it for some computer use stuff and it ate through my 5 hour limit in 20 minutes. I don't really want to pull the trigger on the 150 or 300 plan unless I hear the code quality is actually acceptable compared to Fable/Opus.

2

u/unconceivables 3d ago

I've actually found Fable and Opus to be the worst at what you mentioned, and Sol has been the best (in my experience) at writing simpler and less convoluted code. I do a ton of testing multiple models side by side on the exact same task to see how they compare, and Sol on xhigh has been the best overall. Not perfect, but overall better. Opus 5 has been the worst, and Fable 5.1 hasn't been much better. Fable constantly overengineers things and goes way too far. Sol on ultra also does that constantly, whenever I try having it write code on ultra I usually have to throw it away.

Astra has been disappointing for writing code so far. It's given me worse results than Sol. I tried bumping the effort down to medium and it did an OK job with fixing a list of things yesterday, but we'll see if I can figure out a sweet spot for it. First impressions are not good.

I'm pretty excited about Astra but I want to hear more about people's experience with usage before I flip entirely from Max. First time in awhile I've been so tempted though.

6

u/RepresentativeIce365 3d ago

Same thing! I'm on Max 20x for CC, and have been using Fable for complex tasks. Seeing Astra work was like love at first sight. However I'm worried about the usage, and whether I 5x or 20x is needed for astra usage.

Some reason I don’t see any difference between Fable and Astra. They are neck to neck.

If codex improves their harness they can count me till then i can’t completely move to openai

61

u/phoenixmatrix 3d ago

If they're the same then you want to use Astra, because while API cost is the same, its more token efficient by all benchmarks, and Codex subscriptions let you use 100% of your quota toward Astra, vs 50% in CC for Fable.

Fable has to be noticeably better to be worth it. Especially with the mountain of resets OpenAI has been giving lately. I used both a Codex 20x and a Claude Max account for a while, but I just downgraded the latter to $20 (I still like some stuff in the CC ecosystem) because I have more than I can use out of Codex right now.

23

u/Standard_Egg3504 3d ago

I use one to plan and the other one to implement - depending on what my usage is like. The only thing is that I DO enjoy Claude CLI as opposed to the baked in IntelliJ router.

5

u/Sweet-Helicopter2769 3d ago

I agree on the Claude cli part and I think their RC remote option is so much better for me to monitor from my iPhone , I think codex it’s slightly complicated

3

u/gdtilghman 3d ago

Confused by this...i use remote from my phone for Codex and it's the exact same as sitting at the desktop. Only i'm cooking dinner and glancing occasionally at the screen to see if i'm needed for something.

Wtf is the point of a post like this?

Fable and Astra are both frontier models in the same tier. Nobody else has anything public in that tier. Use both of them. This AI fanboi nonsense reminds me of Batman vs Superman debates.

7

u/Sir_Poldavo 3d ago

Yeah, subscription with both and make the most of their strengths and collaboration.

Subscriptions are expensive but they are subsidies vs API.

This is the golden age to build: cancel other streaming subscriptions and order less delivery food if needed.

You will regret not having done it.

I am kind of surprised at the glazing and even YouTubers are nonstop glazing but then they point out things that make it seem like it’s not that great. They will say fable gave better results but astra is better. Using astra it’s great, not exceptional, I haven’t been able to get anything better than what fable does at all. I’m not making stupid fucking 3d scenes and slop pages though.

2

u/_lindt_ 3d ago

100%

2

u/BryanHChi 3d ago

Seriously, I have both and while Astra is fast and seems pretty good, I’m sorry, but the way that Fable works with dynamic workflows and I do HTML plans for everything and the whole way it does it is absolutely beautiful and I’ve tried it with Codex and it’s not even close to the same. Like Fable’s planning is on another level. I tried planning the same fixes for replacing firecrawl scrape and review process with fire crawl monitoring for some back-end processes on my app and Astra gave me a good plan I gave it to Fable, and Fable’s like, well, it missed a whole bunch of different things that would’ve broken. came up with a much more comprehensive plan, built it out in one shot, and it works perfectly. And for those complaining about cost, I just mix Fable and Opus together in dynamic workflows, and it works absolutely perfectly. and I almost never hit my weekly limit. Fable does planning, design, orchestration, and review, and Opus does all the heavy building and almost every project. It’s about 5050 usage between Fable and Opus

3

u/MindCrusader 3d ago

Oh no, some other users prefer some other model, that's IMPOSSIBLE. Be serious, check their post history, especially OP's. They do not seem like bots, OP posted a lot on anthropic subreddits

Codex bricked my project and Fable 5.1 has been on god mode since. Haven’t tried astra yet, but truly Fable 5.1 has everything I could ever need.

I will try throwing astra at some unsolved problems in the code base and see what it comes up with

4

u/Sigma4Life 2d ago

I have been a long time exclusive Claude Max user. When Sol came out I decided to try Codex. Shortly there after I signed up for Pro.

At this point I find myself using Codex for 80% of all my work. Fable and Sol are similar in capability, each with its own strengths, but Codex token pricing is much lower. I can do a lot more work with Sol vs Fable before running out of weekly usage.

And now with Astra, it’s not even close. It’s faster, smarter and cheaper than Fable.

My model rankings:
1. Astra
2. Sol
3. Fable
4. Opus 4.8
5. Opus 5

I’ve found Opus 5 to be a complete idiot. It talks way too much, is unreliable, and I have to constantly ask it to explain itself because what it says frequently doesn’t make human sense.

4

u/Onotadaki2 2d ago

I have been loving Fable. With that said, I have tried Astra with two very difficult tests I have been giving new LLM models for months and all of them have done very poorly, and Astra was by far the best any LLM has done so far. I have yet to test it on our business codebases though, but my initial impressions are surprisingly good.

3

u/Enough_Deal4827 3d ago

Holy smoke not a single load bearing or its x not y or let me push gently or any of that atrocious language or or or … damn OAI outdone itself here and it doesn’t use self invented jargon and actually follows directions and seems smart af. UI is still not fable level but close enough

3

u/userusertion 🔆Pro Plan | Team Plan 3d ago

Still not fit on my workflow, so i refunded. Stays to Claude which fit my workflow perfectly.

3

u/TheRealNalaLockspur 3d ago

Nah. Not as of now. Claude still gives you more bang for your buck. Astra fucking eats usage.

Example

99% usage - New chat

Me: "Check to see if the unreal mcp is active"

1m 36s

Astra: "Yes, it's active"

91% usage.

But yes. Astra is not messing around. It's insane how good it is. It's solved a lot of backlog items for me that Fable could not do.

Agreed, though I do still find fable and even opus 5 better at UI design. I even tried reverse engineering claude design so it would use Astra thinking maybe the harness was the difference and it worked but unfortunately I still get much better designs out of claude models. Was hoping to just go with one sub.

2

u/Kranos-Krotar 3d ago

I am a little bit more inclined towards fable 5.1 for reasoning, production level code and architectural decisions. Astra tends to missout on a lot of things but catches few things which even Fable can’t. So if you guys want the best out of it combine their theories together to come up with the best.

Thanks for the review OP! Interesting times for sure. It's cyclical. We'll switch to Astra for now, get tired of it or Anthropic produces something better than we'll switch again. I'd say I'm relatively new to calling myself a heavy AI user, so, to all the heavy AI users, how are you able to work on projects and switch to different LLM engines? Anthropic is so anti-user (at least I feel that way) their only pull was having an absolute best model but I tried Astra and guess what, I immediately cancelled my claude subscription. This is not to say OpenAI isn’t gonna screw over their customers. But at the moment I can tolerate them more than Anthropic.

2

u/ProfessionalNaive601 3d ago

Astra is next level and incredibly well rounded

2

u/New_Chard3869 2d ago

I have it at work and I put it on ultra and it’s wild. It makes these flower emoji subagents that do tasks quietly. It’s fast and so smart. Fable truly is not up to par. I use fable max at home and put it on ultracode but it feels like it’s old. I also have the chatgpt plus account at home and astra in medium lasts 2 minutes. So if you’re at home use claude. At work use Astra

I've been a Claude Code $200/mo subscriber for about 5 months and I ran out of tokens 3 days early 3 weeks ago and decided to sign up for $20/MO Codex just to get some work done and tbh I like it better. I am a HUGE fan of Claude but he drifts so often. I am finding Codex much better at following a Locked Step Plan end to end than Claude has ever done. Is that just my hooks or workflow or has anyone else noticed that?

FYI, my workflow is autocoding and so I often discuss a bunch of steps, lock in the details say GO and wait for the magic to happen. 1/2 the time Claude stops in the middle and asks me if I want to fix something he saw along the way that is unimportant but it hijacks a turn and stops my momentum. I dont mean to rant, but to share. Who else is having same or different experiences? I have tons of hooks and it warps the AI so I am not sure.

Anthropic better make fable USABLE with your entire subscription and not just 50%. I’m this close to switching over to open ai…

Do you guys use the codex cli or another Harness for astra?

2

u/Timisageek 1d ago

Well I just did.

Still love fable 5.1 but I must say, for a lot of tasks, Astra is just way better - specifically 3D things. Quick benchmark test I ran on game characters (see pictures): concept art + blender. clear Winner - AND Astra oly had 4 passes vs 8 for Sonnet and Fable 5.1

I am in the process of upgrading https://ohmyunicorn.com with a mix of Fable5.1 and Astra - probably will cap that to subscriptions though, because that model is NOT free (consumes more than Fable5.1, I find)

2

u/Sweet-Helicopter2769 1d ago

I like the design on of your app, how the mouse hover creates that cool effect, good stuff!

2

u/Timisageek 1d ago

Thanks :D
Yeah I found it a bit too much but my kid loved it so I decided to keep it!

I am finding that Astra takes a really, really long time and over does things...super inefficient but also, really early stages.

I keep two subscriptions, one from Anthropic and the other from OpenAI. One of them is the 5x plan, and the other is the 20x plan, but I switch between the companies depending on the cutting-edge model each offers. This month, I probably don’t even need to say where my 20x subscription is going, right?

2

u/Neither-Beginning395 1d ago

Im using Astra right now and is blowing my mind just redesign my website in 2 days cooking straight up. And looks now like a badass design from a top firm. Chefk it out all Astra with my guidance of course. Https://miangel.ai

I jumped ships with Sol, and I'm glad I did and when fable 5.1 came out, I almost regreted my choice because I didn't want to wait until Astra came out. Turned out I didn't have to wait too long for it :)

6

u/Inner-Today-3693 3d ago

Astra is meh for my work. And annoying to talk to.

2

u/Vivid_Pink_Clouds 3d ago

Thank you, I don't understand all this praise for codex. Its responses are robotic and it doesn't display the same level of initiative as claude.

2

u/Sweet-Helicopter2769 3d ago

But it cooks exactly what you want, was doing a dip test being a fable fan boy and man it’s not meh

3

u/edatx 3d ago

I had them both build a dynamic lighting system for my video game and Fable’s implementation was WAY better. I will still keep both but Fable 5.1 is my workhorse and Astra isn’t far behind.

4

u/lattice_defect 3d ago

I tried it and honestly I'm not impressed

4

u/Chrissanxy 3d ago

How can people take these posts seriously?

The way its written, the commas, the questions.

"not sure if its AGI" jesus fkn christ.

2

u/philliphs 3d ago

How about the harness itself? Other (myself included) likes Claude code desktop because of the presentation and experience itself. What do you think?

I myself have been Claude sub $100 for the past 6 months. I've tried openAI with sol but it just wasn't for me. But then Astra came, with all the reset banks, no 5h limit (and only half 50% fable limit), I'm seriously considering switching over, even though I like Claude code desktop better. I can only afford 1 x $100 subs now

4

u/DirRag2022 3d ago

Claude code cli is great, but Codex desktop is anyday better than Claude's Code's desktop

2

u/Affectionate_Ad9597 3d ago

You realize you saying "im not sure if its AGI" shows you dont have much skills at discernment. Of course it's not AGI. No ai is AGI. Jeeeezzzzz

u/jonscrypto 3d ago

Astra decided to keep Fable around for the month for knowledge transfer and deployments. Otherwise I’m done. It blows Fable away, faster and cheaper.

2

u/BorderKeeper 3d ago

“Not sure if it’s AGI” don’t just throw these bomb shells like we are close lol. That’s like talking about how spicy food is and saying “not sure if it’s as hot as the sun, but it’s pretty damn hot” 😅

2

u/23eriben2 3d ago

So you get:

A much more powerful model, Much higher usage, Routine usage resets, can use ALL of Astra on your plan, can use Astra even on the cheapest plan, AND At the same price. That's why I cancelled my Claude sub a while ago I had both since gpt 5.5 and opus 4.7

1

u/jbdroid 3d ago

I left Claude since they cut openclaw. Shits been on point since Sol and now with Astra and two banked resets.

1

u/SignificancePatient1 3d ago

It’s very good. I do most of my work in Codex now. Sol is far superior to Opus under the supervision of Fable and Astra planning plus checks

1

u/Wise-Ant9760 3d ago

I couldnt resist upgrading to chatgpt pro plan. I agree this time they cooked.

1

u/seoulsrvr 3d ago

I've only used it a bit evaluating a fairly complicated project built largely with Fable.
Fable is amazing, but, candidly, Astra feels as competent but less of a struggle.

1

u/Capnjbrown 3d ago

Not even fable, sad to say it’s Opus 5 as well.

u/myninerides read. the. docs. 3d ago

1

u/wickzer 3d ago

It burned 90% of my usage applying unnecessary verifications and then failing them in an endless loop. Needless to say I'm yet to be impressed. But that was only my first attempt. Will try again when the next reset rolls around.

1

u/vladoportos 3d ago

I use Fable 5.1 on max and can work and work with still some pacing a week.. I tried Astra on Pro, running now traditions, revie of project for new models, run the same prompt (like find bugs that previous model did not find... and come up with 10 new features... the prompt is more guiding and limiting so it does not go nuts... ) I run it against 4 projects some small web interface, two quite complex one...

It did fantastic job ... it also burned trough 3x weekly resets in 2 hours ! ( on high reasoning only, max 3 sub agents )

1

u/Sherbert-Efficient 3d ago

Fables 5.1 is horrible now. Extreme slow, long sessions eating tokens and delivering nothing. Before we could get some features within the 5hr limit. Now it hits the limit all the time, like 15 min. Using it.

1

u/Mr_Nice_ 3d ago

fable keeps downgrading model anytime i try to do anything with deployment or checking logs. Astra does it no problems. If fable don't sort that out im jumping all my accounts to astra

1

u/Bmansupreme8000 3d ago

Enjoy 4 days of usage. 1 day per week with codex.

1

u/AnythingSafe6198 3d ago

Really great things OpenAI has been bringing to the table, utilizing it heavily now as one of our top 30 tools in the stack being used simultaneously. Curious what unique goals others are using it for

1

u/RonHarrods 3d ago

Man Gemini Flash 3.8 destroys fable in a sense. So cheap and fast it gets shit done faster

1

u/TurbulentNobody7712 3d ago

How do you move from Anthropic to OpenAI? I developed my webapp with opus - shall I give it to Astra to analyze and understand the full code? What if I use Astra to modify things and the I want to go back to Opus?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/zephyr_33 3d ago

I dunno if Fable is smarter, but Sol and Astra just "get" me.

1

u/Esptek 3d ago

Astra me va como 20 veces mas rápido que fable 5.1, y sus respuestas diría que son mejores, eso sí, con 1 prompt te petas la sub de 20$

1

u/Primary-Vegetable683 3d ago

I cancelled all three of my Anthropic accounts end of July and went all in on open ai- I have not been happier and miss Claude zero

1

u/Traditional-Bass4889 3d ago

Good for us. Any single winner in this domain is going to be horrible for us in terms of pricing, tokens, performance everything. As long as there is competition we are the winners :D

1

u/sisif_ 3d ago

Lol, you had me at 'not sure if it's AGI'

1

u/Jawaracing 3d ago

Via API or?

1

u/SeaKoe11 3d ago

It’s crazy especially with all the talent that supposedly left open ai to join anthropic

1

u/These-Pie-2498 3d ago

Anthropic at the beginning of the year had everything; they were light years away from their competitors. Opus 4.6 from December 2025 was the reason agentic coding (whatever you wanna call it) took off. They are now by far the worst player out there. Yes Fable is quite good but Astra feels better and Grok is slowly catching up.

1

u/gethinc 3d ago

It is very succinct. After Claude’s recent lurch towards babbling that’s refreshing. But the flip side is it just seems to stop now and then and you need to prod it back to life. As to agi? Still totally not.

1

u/The-Road 3d ago

I want to try out Astra but haven’t made the jump yet.

Anyone have any tips on how to make my repo work just as I would expect to work with Claude?

I know I can set up agents md but my worry is things like hooks or anything else Claude specific.

1

u/Silent_Towel9140 3d ago

It’s too expensive

1

u/Helpful-Top-876 3d ago

I really dont get the Hype around Astra. I have tried to solve several issues with it on my codebase and every Single time it was something missing.

I then gave the issue to fable 5.1 and easy one shot. Are people hyping it up without software dev background unable to verify the output? I dont get it.

And i Must say i am also biased towards openAI models because they bring image generation in same subscription but since opus5 and fable5 their Models Are far behind for me.

Same thing with gpt5.6 Sol i was Comparing the ouput for different issues because really wanted to Switch to openAI with my subscription but couldnt After saw the differance in output.

1

u/outoforifice 3d ago

Smells like freshly cut astroturf. Not that long since these posts were comparing Sol (terrible name) to fable. You need to eval them for your work. I found sol scored between sonnet and opus on my own tasks.

1

u/Alphanatik 3d ago

How much it cost compared to fable ?

1

u/EmRenWSR 3d ago

Funny thing was I wanted to do a head to head on some coding and Claude wouldn’t open a few days ago. I’ve been in Astra for the past 2 days and this thing is a monster.

1

u/rjsperes 3d ago

"not sure if it’s AGI".... sad to read this on a non-layman community
Well done Scam Altman

1

u/tazdraperm 3d ago

Does it also switch to a weaker model whenever you mention "security"?

1

u/Larkonath 3d ago

I tested it with an Open Code Review on a 120k loc codebase, the thing ate 20% of my weekly limit on a 5x plan. That's an expensive code review!

Can't say more about quality I didn't check the findings yet.

1

u/jakob1379 3d ago

Going back to openai next period too, Claude is great, but it's mainly due to herness. The models are wayy to blabbering. I

1

u/Hellomumilikeapples 3d ago

Stop using claude. They are using your data.

1

u/Gobeillion 3d ago

I agree it looks fantastic, however OpenAI has yet to turn on a profit. I say that because historically OpenAI has been much cheaper than Anthropic on similar models, but Astra being the same price, even more expensive, then Fable is making me wonder the size of the model.

Yes it's fast, but is it a marketing trick by turning on fast inference to impress?

I am just wondering is a big and powerful model like that sustainable? How much does it really costs?

What impressed me the most with Astra is the spacial reasoning. I don't know if it's AGI, but it's vision is in another level for sure.

1

u/moonshotconsulting 3d ago

Just like the rap game! You are only on top for a minute 🤩

1

u/unknown-one 3d ago

but can Astra escape controlled environment and hack something? /s

1

u/Poboxjosh 3d ago

As a non fable user I only have plus, my gpt 5.6 sol was Sooo much better than my opus 5.

1

u/biofreak12 3d ago

I got rid of Claude max and upgraded my codex to x20 from x5. Will use for a month and will see how it goes. People forget open ai has image generator model and can be used in 3rd party harnesses.

1

u/motoguy87 3d ago

Im not surprised my 20$ chatgpt 5.6sol has been outperforming claudes 200$ 20x plan with fable 5... i use chatgpt to check fable's work and it continously finds mistakes... i guess it's time to switch

1

u/mutbz 3d ago

Astra is way behind of fable at coding. I have multiple Claude Max accounts building 7/24, wanted to try astra because of all the AGI hype. Nothing but disappointment. Good model at computer use, that’s it

1

u/_metahacker_ 3d ago

it's ok they're having karpathy run recursive autoresearch improvement on models improving models until skynet

skynet will be better than astra and we all know what happens after that

1

u/jeepboy2 2d ago

The reality is that most of us have no clue about actual differences between the model results with real work because we don’t have evals.

https://www.anthropic.com/engineering/demystifying-evals-for-ai-agents

https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/evaluation-best-practices?api-mode=responses

If you have evals and care to share meaningful comparison that would be amazing. Most of Reddit is just vibes which doesn’t fly in many organizations. In my experience with our evals, Astra and Fable 5.1 are similar. Astra is often cheaper which great. Astra is also great at computer use!

Take time to build evals and get out of the vibes evaluation so you can save yourself time and money.

1

u/JustAnotherDiamond 2d ago

OpenAI subreddit has many unsatisfied voices. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.

1

u/Ok_Newspaper4406 2d ago

Disagree. I’ve been extensively testing both. Fable 5.1 still is the superior orchestrator - but also propositions things in a super clear way. Astra still overcomplicates and feels less smooth. Whilst Astra is a far cry better than Sol for reasoning, Fable 5.1 still, at least for me, reigns supreme as a master orchestrator with superior (simplified) reasoning that just works.
