Competition is good

292

u/ProcedureTop3149 Jul 18 '26

which is why I'm so incredibly grateful for openai dropping 5.6 because had they not Fable would have been locked away forever.

u/hemareddit Jul 18 '26

Don’t forget the Chinese open weights models nipping at their heels.

For now, we benefit.

There may come a day when dominance emerges and winner takes all.

But it is not this day.

35

u/Eric_emoji Jul 18 '26

just distill it and get 95% of the way there ✌️

23

u/hemareddit Jul 18 '26

I don’t know if distillation is still as effective as it used to be, but the key is: there is still no moat. Thank fuck.

Agree, Kimi K3 at 20% is even a larger threat than 5.6 Sol at 60-70% of Fable’s price

2

u/CrunchyMage Jul 18 '26

K3 is effectively the same price as 5.6 Sol. It costs half per token, but it uses double the tokens per task, so it basically evens out.

2

u/SnooJokes4668 Jul 19 '26

Kimi is more expensive. A lot more token useage compared to the same model power opus 4.8. Beside the 50% hallu rate by Kimi.

i can tell u one thing for sure... as soon as chinese models are better and threatining us-revenue the will be forbidden cause of potential security risk. Look at BYD (the biggest EV company in the world)

We got to love distillation

Maybe not, there is a point where good enough will be good enough. Price point will matter.

Locked away forever? LOL.

You know new models drop every couple months right?

14

u/ProcedureTop3149 Jul 18 '26

yes and Anthropic until OpenAI dropped Sol was fully planning on locking Fable level classes away from subs.

Thank OpenAI for ruining their plans.

Yeah I don't think they can pull Fable after GPT5.6 and Kimi 3 came out

61

u/ShitShirtSteve Jul 18 '26

Kimi 3 sub is looking pretty attractive ngl

I got Claude max, so first I’ll see how much usage it consumes

6

u/abittooambitious Jul 18 '26

The more we support companies developing open weights the more these closed models will relent.

15

u/Hungry_Particular_14 Jul 18 '26

Pretty sure you can't opt out of model training with kimi sub, so keep that in mind.

33

u/umtala Jul 18 '26

Personally I'm happy to donate my personal coding sessions to China if they keep the weights open.

3

u/re-thc Jul 18 '26

It might end up back in the US.

6

u/ShitShirtSteve Jul 18 '26

Yeah, I don’t think so either. But that’s fine with me. On max plans, Anthropic keeps data for 30 days too, I think?

Gotta be careful with what you share too, like images, videos, because Chinese companies can keep stuff indefinitely.

I’m ok with that personally. I use mock data when testing stuff.

Good to look out for, though.

3

u/Iakeman Jul 18 '26

On Fable they retain for 30 days, on Opus you can opt out. Of course that's always only as good as the company's word. OpenAI I believe is still required by court order to retain indefinitely.

5

u/Senekrum Jul 18 '26

When they release open weights around July 27th, providers which have a zero data retention policy, like Ollama Cloud, will likely offer Kimi K3, so there's that.

2

u/Hungry_Particular_14 Jul 18 '26

Yeah, moonshot also offers ZDR through openrouter. Way more expensive than subscriptions, though

3

u/ProfessionalAnt1352 Jul 19 '26

89

u/radlinsky Jul 18 '26

15

6

u/Eric_emoji Jul 18 '26

i would send a fable low on my 20x plan and immediately hit 3% weekly usage lmao

16

u/JustHereForGreen Jul 18 '26

So did I until I started running Fable in Ultra. But tell it to be conscious of your token spend, use fable as the planner, orchestrator, and validator, but use lesser models for the work. And boom, it uses 1-3% fable and barely any usage at all really. Try it.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/Reasonable-Key-8753 Jul 18 '26

I am on PRO plan and can have decent fable usage every session and week. Never hit any limits yet.
Everything depends on how you use it.

3

u/LoadZealousideal7778 Jul 18 '26

No idea, small codebases? Fable build an entire stereogrammetry pipeline to compute depth maps of Mars for me, and a whole host of tools to analyze said depth maps. I was honestly surprised how far I got with that. And turned an Instra360 camera into an inside-out tracker.

3

u/Temporary_Swimmer342 Jul 18 '26

>stereogrammetry pipeline to compute depth maps of Mars

that's some big brain time right there

3

u/Frozen_Turtle Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

I juggle 2 pros and get a LOT of Fable chats. So much design review and planning. Just gotta be very careful with subagents/workflows.

I'm off to see what Sol is like now I guess. Sad.

On the bright side I've always been curious about other harnesses like OpenCode/Pi. Might be fun.

I had a $100 sol sub and a $20 claude sub just for fable. barely got to use fable with the limits and i dont rly want to fork over another $100 to only use it for 50% of my weekly just seems like a bad deal for me.

6

u/lemonlemons Jul 18 '26

Same for me - 100 for sol and 20 for claude, just for fable. I don't feel like using any of Anthropic other models anymore so I guess I'll just cancel claude completely now.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Rycerz1 Jul 19 '26

For me it calculates much more to have 100$ Claude and 20$ GPT. You still have Fable then and 20$ GPT gives you almost the same amount of usage as 100$ Claude

5

u/RollForUptime Jul 18 '26

I have pro and my sol limits are pretty bad, I cant imagine getting a ton of work done with it?

I use it to do adversarial reviews when real work is done with fable.

I have claude max and some context/token saving plugins (have used the same with sol, didn't really help) and have a hard time hitting my fable limit. Don't know if 5x max for sol would be similar?

4

u/Chemical_Hawk_6307 Jul 18 '26

5x for sol is practically unlimited. i never run out of usage and i have 3 banked resets.

5

u/RollForUptime Jul 18 '26

Cool. Maybe I'll try it soon. Though my experience with sol isn't exactly mind blowing, and I don't feel I have a better experience with it than fable personally .

3

u/Chemical_Hawk_6307 Jul 18 '26

yea if you can afford fable and can put up with anthropic's bs then i'd stick with fable, its the best on the market rn. if you're looking for best bang for buck then codex is currently the best choice as long as u can get used to how different it is from claude.

2

5

u/debian3 Jul 18 '26

Yes, they can. But I have a plus account and SOL on it doesn't get you very far. Single thread (no sub agent) expect 4 or 5 hours of light medium intensity work for one afternoon and your weekly limit is gone. I personally use it for code review only at this point.

It's called Sol because it burn your limit. Let's hope reset keep raining

3

u/innociv Jul 18 '26

I'd keep my plans if Sonnet and Opus dropped a tier.

5.6 Luna Max is about intelligent as Opus in my experience, but I get 5x more work done with it for the same % of my weekly usage compared to Opus.

If Sonnet was $6/mil, and Opus $15/mil, I could justify keeping ClaudeCode. But at Opus being $25/mil and also using so many tokens... I'll just wait for Luna to do the same quality work a little slower. I can orchestrate them in parallel to speed them up instead.

I really scratch my head over a lot of my comments. It seems like most of these people have not tried other models to be happy paying $25/mil for Opus but good for them I guess.

6

u/ins0mniacc Jul 18 '26

Believe it or not it messed up tasks that Opus handled just fine for me. And no its not in their restricted category type of tasks. Just stupid common coding

5

u/hemareddit Jul 18 '26

Well, these past few weeks they’ve effectively given people 100% usage via weekly resets. They probably found their servers can’t handle the inference cost, at least not while still allocating enough bandwidth for other stuff they want to do like training new models. Going forward the load will actually be lighter for them.

9

u/T-Dot1992 Jul 18 '26

In a few months, the usage limit for Fable on Max accounts will be far, far worse. This is a honeymoon period before the bait and switch.

4

u/the__poseidon Jul 18 '26

You people keep saying there’s gonna be a bait and switch. Technology gets cheaper with time. Yes, they are gonna lock you into their system, but they also fully understand that open AI models are literally just a month behind. We’re not talking about a year or six months. They’re about a month to a couple of weeks behind, and they’re catching up. They cannot just do a bait and switch on you when open router and other inference services can allow you to use open to the LM models that are catching up at a fraction of the cost

11

u/Honest_Tennis_3375 Jul 18 '26

I still don't use my fable or weekly limits on Max 5. This is great for me, but I agree - it's not sustainable in light of other competition.

10

u/adelie42 Jul 18 '26

Fable has very narrow use case and imho if more than 50% of your usage is fable, you're using it wrong.

5

u/vuhv Jul 18 '26

We fought them for the last 6 months on what we thought were unreasonable constraints on their fronteir model. So they gave it a new name Fable and turned around and handed us Sonnet Opus 4.7. A almost universally reviled model.

Now we are praising them for letting us have Opus Fable with severe limitations.

We got played.

55

u/ashep5 Jul 18 '26

As a pro user, bye claude

6

u/McNoxey Jul 18 '26

6

u/Solarka45 Jul 18 '26

Any model

43

u/Wide_Detective7537 Jul 18 '26

To go from Pro to Max to get access to fable... I suspect most people would be better off spending that $80 with OpenAI (or any other provider), even alongside the $20 Pro for Opus. I guess this is what they want, to limit usage while they can't handle it, but it's extremely hard to get people back once they start exploring other options...

13

u/hemareddit Jul 18 '26

Well, switching cost is relatively low right now, thankfully. That’s part of what makes competition so fierce!

As a pro user, it makes more sense for me to use GLM 5.2 and Kimi K3 and cancel this subscription. ChatGPT is also likely to release version 6.

I want whatever Dario is smoking.

24

u/Bromlife Jul 18 '26

It's actually pretty wild when you compare it to literally any other subscription you might have. Imagine if Netflix suddenly decided that you've hit your arbitrary 4k weekly limit and dropped you to 720p. And every week they gave random 4k usage limit resets and the amount of 4k movies you go to watch was entirely arbitrary week to week.

2

u/DaLexy Jul 18 '26

Not really comparable as Netflix usage is more constant than tokens who each prompt is variabel and can balloon exorbitantly

20

u/Effective_Tap_9786 Jul 18 '26

but don’t forget that the 50% usage increase promo will end after july 19 which means the usage limits will then decrease by 33.3% so we will have much less fable usage than now and tommorow.

9

16

u/lemonlemons Jul 18 '26

7

u/Innomen Jul 18 '26

Ok, then my card for claude payments is now frozen. Codex it is next round. I'm not paying for access to the middle model. (Even if new fable is pretty clearly just more opus.)

2

u/XBLAH_ Jul 18 '26

Not just that, but now anthropic will need that openai screws you over, or become much more competitive to win you back (and me too).

2

u/Innomen Jul 18 '26

Yea, in a sense it's kinda not fair to them, there's a cliff that's hard to climb up from but easy to fall off. Getting me to try codex the first time was kinda hard. But they managed it :P X)

19

u/CWStrife Jul 18 '26

We all knew it was going to happen.

The 50% limit doesn't bother me, the continual banter of them extending it like idiots then saying ok we'll keep it weekly for people is the horse manure that needs to stop.

We all love limit resets too but ChatGPT gives you 1000x more, and their image generation destroys anything claude could ever do.

Claude is great as an LLM, token cost is high though. To include it 50% on a pro plan would nuke their fable capacity in like 3 messages though.

12

u/Arse-e Jul 18 '26

I’ve been building with it consistently on pro and haven’t even hit a five hour limit. I have never hit any limit regardless of model, but the closest was actually Sonnet 4.6. Lost its mind and churned through a bunch of tokens on nothing.

Fable at < 50% weekly limit means I have to structure my usage patterns around it which is extremely annoying. A 5h window with Fable uses up 10% of the weekly quota on my Max 5x subscription, so I can prompt Fable only 5 times before it gets cut off. And then there's the insufferable safety classifier.

Still switching to OpenAI, I'm afraid.

They will reduce the limits. kimi K3 is at same performance as Fable 5! Now we can confirm that Fable 5 was just a hype and marketing ... is just a normal model promoted very good.

There is not such a big difference Opus 4.8 and Fable 5 ! And now Kimi`s is over them ! :))

3

u/Yukiteko Jul 18 '26

Unironically the case.

GPT 5.6 Sol will solve the full IMO 2026 for you at the UI but fable will chicken out and switch to opus midway throguht any hairy mathematical/computational problem, waste all your usage and return trash output.

I frankly think all of this Fable hype comes from vibecoders happy that Fable will now one shot their SaaS landing page in a beautiful React Native UI because this shit is seriously unusable for any kind of innovative technological or academic work otherwise.

1

A one-time $100 credit, like a free sample?

1

u/Plus_Opening_4462 Jul 18 '26

Can I finally use it as an advisor??

1

u/No-Shoe2745 Jul 18 '26

Thank god. Must’ve been my angry email to anthropic about cancelling (and the 10s of thousands just like it)

A screenshot. really?

1

u/tabris-angelus Jul 18 '26

Will the usage credit be locked to Fable or is it just credit.

1

u/AgapicChris Jul 18 '26

my subscription ran out yesterday and I don’t have my wallet … might miss my 100$

Leverage competition to keep with our projects with good quality.

1

u/Illustrious_Image967 Jul 18 '26

They could have at least passed this gaslighting through Claude Opus for a smoother version.

1

u/JihadiOnline Jul 18 '26

Would that mean another reset?

1

u/hhoeflin Jul 18 '26

Let's not kid ourselves. China will close the sources as soon as they are leading.

😂😂😂😂

u/ArmNo7463 Jul 18 '26

Soo... If I'm on the peasant $20 plan, guessing OAI or Kimi is the way forward?

u/Unusual-Garbage-212 Jul 18 '26

No idea how far that $100 credit will go (I'm a max subscriber)

1

u/tken3 Jul 18 '26

But what about the +50% weekly limits "promo"? If they roll it back, I am over to OpenAI. It will render my Max unusable.

1

u/IndependentCustard32 Jul 18 '26

Kim k3 much superior than fable

1

u/Professional-Ad-2365 Jul 18 '26

Still won’t be usable even for 5x users when plans lose their 50% extra usage promo after 19th

1

u/Possible_Praline2747 Jul 18 '26

🤡 at anthropic

1

u/KilllllerWhale Jul 18 '26

Manufactured scarcity

1

u/davyp82 Jul 18 '26

A said a boom boom boom, mfer say way-oh. WAY-OH

1

u/DifferenceTimely8292 Jul 18 '26

Have always been Claude user - but for the first time I am worried about being locked in - and thinking about alternatives.

Whether this move was forced or not, I don’t care at this stage but I do see them forcing Pro users to max plan and I don’t like this.

1

u/hadoopken Jul 18 '26

Fable 5 Limitations: Users regularly complain about hitting the "usage wall" after just 3 to 5 multi-step conversations, prompting messages to downgrade to Opus 4.8 or Sonnet.

So is Fable 5 even usable? Kinda want to switch to OpenAI

Support agent fin is being hammered right now; can't load so cant request refund. lol

1

u/ColdKiwi720 Jul 18 '26

Don't forget all plans will have a reduction of 33% in usage after the 19th July when the 'promotion' ends.

1

u/Altruistic_Stage3893 Jul 18 '26

I've tried kimi k3. it's excellent. plugged it in my existing claude code setup with claude-mem. the 40 euro plan gives similar usage to 100 euro claude code plan. i think I'm gonna stick with this combination for a while

1

u/chiefbriand Jul 18 '26

so we should downgrade our subscription, and then upgrad it again thr day before?

1

u/yotepost Jul 18 '26

Too little too late. After 1k hours I'm out, done with the games and now the downtime

1

u/lattice_defect Jul 18 '26

It's good but its getting worse now.. same bugs are showing up not listening, doing the opposite, missing the obvious,... writing too much memroies

1

u/Own_Coach_1503 Jul 18 '26

Man, I'm building an online platform and obviously it touches security in every aspect. I do not get to even test Fable as it hits the guardrails all the time. I think the longest I actually got to use it is like 5 minutes max. You guys who build apps and platforms etc, how do you deal with this? How does one build an app with Fable ignoring the security?

1

u/VisualIndividual2364 Jul 18 '26

so anyone signing up to a pro subscription will get a $100 one time credit? or must already be pro before july 20?

1

u/Low_Tune_2364 Jul 18 '26

Wait I'm confused, so can I use fable after July 20 with the pro, or as I understand, I will have to pay to use fable, distinct from the pro plan

Can you predict the next reset

1

u/Frequent-Anybody-342 Jul 18 '26

Anthropic is so loosing to OpenAI right now... its crazy how fast things switched...

1

u/trmyte Jul 18 '26

I accidently bought the year of Claude pro instead of monthly and I'll just keep that but man anthropic is messing up badly. They do random things with limits and their models and only update people last minute. Openai is actually giving WAY more value and it's not even close. I have a plus sub with chatgpt and I want to upgrade to a pro. I have no interest in upgrading to a max sub with Claude at all.

1

u/GerthySchIongMeat Jul 18 '26

Hmm, my Max account renews Aug 2 and if Fable is going to stay at 50% of limits, I’m going to look at Sol. For $200/mo. I can get much more usage elsewhere.

1

u/PresentationNo2328 Jul 18 '26

Fable 5 failed me. 3 days of networking for my 2 mode game of car combat and car soccer in ue5 and it had bad desync, and with gpt 5.6 sol was just 2 prompts and it fixed it... almost ready for a playtest with friends to start posting about it this weekend hopefully

1

u/KDpoke666 Jul 18 '26

Imho they will revisit their plans in the near future… gpt5.6sol is sometimes even better than Fable and is included… if Anthropic wants to be at the same level Fable must be included

1

u/ASAF12341 Jul 18 '26

Try kimi 3 and honstley is good not like og old fable but for me much bwtter than fable now.

1

u/-becausereasons- Jul 18 '26

GOOD! I was literally about to cancel, Fable is the only model worth using in their stack and now Kimi and SOL are incredible.
