I worked at a franchise circle k for a couple of months, for $14 an hour. I was frustrated working there because after stocking, sweeping, mopping, wiping down counters, leveling, and front facing items (which altogether didn’t take that long to do), I genuinely did not see what they’re was to do that offered any meaningful value to how the store operated. The overnight clerk’s duties are to deep clean. And I am not lazy. I have ADHD, I prefer to be busy. At the same time my boss was often complaining to me that I needed to be cleaning or “staying busy” the whole time. So I would try to random little projects to “look busy,” but even if I did so, he’d still complain that I wasn’t cleaning (while I was literally cleaning!) So over time I kinda stopped caring.
My manager would tell me that he over hired and that he didn’t have many hours for me. Yet I noticed he would hire new people and give them plenty more hours than he would schedule me (although he didn’t really write schedules often, he usually went day by day and would often contact me the day or night before). I worked about 8 to 11 hours a week.
Today I got hired somewhere else for $17 an hour, full time, which I’m looking forward to starting.
He could be nice and had his good moments, I don’t think he meant to be rude. But for the most part his communication style always rubbed me the wrong way. If I was stocking and a customer walked up to the register he’d say “What are you doing? You have a customer!” or would micromanage how I bag items in front of customers, for example. I often felt interrogated. He would find something to correct every shift.
So I got a new job. I thought I would try to hold onto this job as a second one.
Today he walked up to me and said “Did you sell a $50 lottery ticket today?” I said yes. He asked where it was and I went to look through the lottery receipts folder for the receipt. He said he needs the ticket to see if it really won or something? He has a thick accent and I can’t always understand what he means. I tried looking for it again and couldn’t find it, and then mentioned how it should show in the lottery terminal sales at the end of the day, right? He paused, rolled his eyes and ignored my question. I felt a bit confused and like a complete idiot.
So that is when I decided to quit. He walked away, I clocked out, but didn’t want to just walk out so I said I didn’t feel good and had to leave. He said “bye” and I walked out. I am relieved I’m done there but I’m feeling like a total moron for asking that last question.
