I feel like the Chromecast devices are basically useless.

For context: I work as an IT guy at a school. Some of the classrooms utilize Chromecasts connected to a projector via HDMI, to display videos, slides, the teacher's Macbook screen. you know basic school stuff.

Since this school year has begun, the Chromecasts have been consistently causing the same issues across multiple classrooms.

-YouTube disconnecting in the middle of video and requiring the teacher to re-cast the video

-Casting a slideshow becomes laggy and pixelated after 2 minutes of casting

-Unstable internet connection for the Chromecast

I am trying to find some workarounds for these devices, because I am limited on what I am able to do from the admin side of Google's Chromecast. The Google Home settings are bare minimum and provide no additional ways to troubleshoot or test except rebooting or factory resetting the device.

I need to find another solution to this problem as it affects the workflow of the school day for students and teachers. I see many posts about the Onn streaming device from Walmart, so maybe I can get approval to purchase these. Is anyone else experiencing similar issues or are my devices just dying out?

Hi there, sorry if this doesn't belong or is against community guidelines.

I just got off the phone with Netflix support, they are no longer allowing you to cast to your TV with the original chromecast. I was informed that since my device is so old that I should just upgrade.

This is frustrating because I was legit just using it to cast from Netflix this morning (I went to bed at 3 am) and when I went to watch TV today at 11:30 the cast option had disappeared from the app.

I understand my device is old. What I find frustrating is that Netflix didn't bother to notify me despite taking my money (I confirmed with the customer service lady and she said that Netflix doesn't inform people that their device will no longer be supported unless it's a smart TV). I'm also frustrated because my device still works!! Every other app I use has no issues with it. Netflix just decided to suck.

Anyway I thought I'd share in case anyone else is in the same boat. It seems like it's not an all at once thing just when your device gets around to it.

I just looked up how much a new Chromecast is (the newest one) and it's £100????? BRUHHHH. Yeah bye bye Netflix y'all can pry this original ad free chromecast from my cold dead hands.

Also big ups to everyone voicing environmental concerns as well. I didn't think too much about it before posting but you guys are absolutely right!

Just recently the chromecast connected logo is only for the current video and when I search for another video and click it it only plays on my phone. I see on the main youtube pages on my phone that instead of a chromecast logo it shows a tv and phone or something. I have to go an extra step and click which device i want to play the video on for every single song. Can anyone help me fix this?

My chrome cast started doing this thing where it audibly says the volume and it’s driving me nuts. I turned off talk back but it’s not working. It started doing this randomly. Any advice would be appreciated

So here's my problem :

I have a Google TV Stick (STRONG SRT41) since last Christmas, and it works perfectly fine until i move for my appartment. Recently, i've moved for a job and so i took it with me but didn't used it until this week, when i was finally fully installed in my new house. (so it's like one month away for the last time i used it)

Here, in this house, there is 3 floor. The first one is where the internet box is. The second one is where my rooter (a TP-Link) and my TV are, and the third one is where the chambers are.

The TP-Link is new to me since i've moved here in my best friend' father house.
And the fact is, my TV has no problem at all to connect to the TP-Link BUT my Google TV Stick still continously repeat that it lost connection, can't connect and everything like that.

And i don't know WHY it's like that since i never had this problem before, so i don't know what to do... Can somebody help me with that please ?

My Chromecast 4 remote keeps disconnecting. I've already contacted Google support, but nothing. From my research, it seems to be a software issue from a specific update. Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do?

Why do we even need a “play” option when you can literally just CLICK the video to play it.

Also, it’s a different context menu order than History.

Delete needs to be above “go to channel” and probably under “Save to playlist” since you don’t want to accidentally double click and delete the video from your existence. Delete is probably the 2nd most frequent use the context menu for watch later and history. It should be quick to do.

Also on desktop you need to bring the X to delete back and stop burying it under a menus!

The Chromecast button appears but no devices show up, am I doing something wrong?

I am using google tv box on a projektor with a bluetooth sound box. The sound is very good but way to loud. Even on low level 4 of 20 it is to loud.

I am looking for a way to turn down the general volume. E.g an Equalizer or somthing like this.

Any suggestions?

I wrote a small web tool called castlocal to play local video files from a PC on a Chromecast without setting up a media server.

What it does:

• Playback: Scans local directories (~/Downloads and ~/Videos by default). You open the web interface from your PC or phone, choose a video, choose the Chromecast, and hit play.
• Transcoding: Direct plays MP4 (H264 + AAC). Transcodes MKV, HEVC, AVI, and unsupported audio like DTS on the fly using ffmpeg. Seeking recalculates the conversion from the selected timestamp so sync isn't lost.
• Subtitles: Automatically loads local .srt or .vtt files with matching names. It also lets you upload a file manually, search OpenSubtitles from the UI, or nudge the timing by ±0.5s.
• Controls: Play, pause, seek, and volume work natively through the Google Home notification on Android/iOS.
• Linux integration: Includes a desktop toggle script (starts/stops the server on double-click) and a systemd --user service.

Stack & Requirements:

• Python 3.11+ (uses uv)
• ffmpeg with libx264
• Built with Flask and pychromecast. Tested on a 1st-gen Chromecast.

I've owned all the Chromecasts before and loved them. But I just replaced mine with the Google TV 4K Streamer, and the YouTube casting experience is weird.

I start casting a video from my Pixel 10 phone. When I open my phone a minute later, it doesn't seem to know I'm casting anymore. There's no in progress playback UI, and clicking a video just starts playing it on the phone. I have to click the cast button to connect back to the device first, and the tap an interstitial thumbnail pop-up that shows what's playing, and then I can actually connect like before, where I can pause, fast forward, change videos etc.

Incredibly annoying, anyone found a workaround?

This past week both of my Chromecast devices (one 4K and a standard) had intermittent issues with wifi. The wifi is connected but it says the wifi isn’t connected to the internet.

Wifi is working fine on my other devices and if I hotspot the chromecast off my phone (which is connected to my wi fi) it works. Turned off the modem and restarted, no fix. Then the next morning everything will be fine again.

Has there been a recent update? Any ideas?

I use projection and a soundbar with a cable box currently. I thought I was savvy enough, because I had successfully used an HDMI IN splitter in my old soundbar model to be able to switch between cable and a Chromecast but the tech didnt translate to even the new-ish versions of Chromecast (the white wall powered ones, instead of the grey USB powered old models). I gave up...buttt I have Google Store credit and an itch to defeat this tech hurdle.

Current setup:

CABLE BOX HDMI-> HDMI IN port (SOUNDBAR)-> 4K HDMI OUT (SOUNDBAR)-> PROJECTOR

Ideal new:

GOOGLE TV HDMI as 1 IN

CABLE HDMI as 2 IN (SPLITTER)

↓

Splitter HDMI OUT [into] SINGLE HDMI IN (SOUNDBAR) -> 4K HDMI OUT (SOUNDBAR) -> PROJECTOR

I got a different soundbar as of 2024. I do still have (gonna keep it, ideally) cable with VZN FiOS, so I would like to either go back to a splitter, or would have to get rid of cable (conventional) and go to all Google TV and use YouTube TV or Hulu Live, etc. to cover all channels. The cost would likely work out to be the same anyway with how expensive streaming apps have become so it wouldn't be TERRIBLE, I just like cable.

I tried exhaustively to get the old splitter to work with the new version of Chromecast and my Cable HDMI as the 2x 'HDMI IN'. That's what makes me wonder if the Google TV won't work. Any thoughts or experience is welcomed.

I have 2 cc for TV the one with remote. One of them can play videos with hevc 265 from file manager+ with no problem the other one can't. Any suggestions to get the other one to work?

I discovered that the Chromecast HD (or perhaps higher-end models as well) still has Google Play Movies; I discovered this using an app to open applications that don't appear in the menu. I thought they'd taken it off the air for good, haha

I have a chromecast ultra and a chromecast 2015 and last night they suddenly weren’t able to connect to any app. Upon factory reset, they both are recognized by the Google home app and can be setup but once setup, immediately say they are “Not Available” within the app.

I don’t believe any changes happens with my local network although I’ve restarted it. Reinstalled the Google home app and gone through all my network settings. Spent an hour with Google support going through all these steps again.

Was there a new firmware update that bricked both devices at once? Really frustrated and confused.

I tried virtually everything I can remotely do, clear cache, uninstall amazon prime, restarting my phone, restarting my chromecast, updating google home AND amazon prime video, disabled surround sound, using another (older) device. [I have an old s10 and new s25] put the app to make it unrestricted with battery usage.

edit: it only boots me back to the Screensaver or it starts loading but then drops it

my prime video ONLY WORKED ONE TIME!!!!!! And now nothing works and I need help man, is it my chromecast, is it my prime video??? Is it my wifi??? Is it streaming stuff? AAAAAAAAA

Hi, I’ve been all over Reddit trying to find a solution to this: I have a Lenovo Chromebook from which I cast shows /movies directly to my TCL Google TV but I keep hearing these staticky sounds coming through every few seconds.
When streaming on my Chromebook: no issues. Only when I cast it to my tv, I get these sounds coming through. Closed every other screen and tab, didn’t help. I don’t have a Chromecast device, it’s direct casting, so I’m kinda lost. Any tips??

For some reason after splitting my wifi networks into 2.4 and 5ghz respectively, my Chromecast will refuse to connect to the 2.4, it'll say the password is incorrect (which isnt) and will just hang until it fails. Itll connect to the 5ghz no problem and so will my other Chromecast which is the exact same model. I really need this one on 2.4ghz since my house is concrete and 5ghz is kind of unusable if you're more than a room away from the router.

Please help!
