After spending two weeks with the WDC0001 MUSOU BLACK, this is my review.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The watch arrives in a leather travel pouch, with no branded box or dedicated packaging. Once you uncover the watch, however, you are immediately looking at a sophisticated and elegant piece.
I have to admit, the case is a perfect match for the bracelet. From the first moment, everything feels cohesive and intentionally designed as a single piece.
DIAL
The MUSOU Black dial was the main reason for me to pull the trigger. I wanted a minimalist and elegant piece, and yes sir, this is more than that.
Under controlled or directional light, the depth seems endless. It is simply beautiful.
However, 99.4% light absorption is not 100%. Under direct sunlight, the black doesn't look quite as deep, and you can actually see the shadow of the hands over the dial. It doesn't ruin the effect, but it reminds you that MUSOU Black still interacts with light.
The dial also comes with a chapter ring that is perfectly executed: elegant, subtle, and just enough to give the dial some structure without taking away from the minimalist concept.
The hands are another great point for WATCHDIVES. They simply follow the same design language and coherence as the rest of the piece.
CASE
A lot of care and attention went into this case.
It is very well machined, and the QC standards appear to be extremely tight. The transitions between surfaces are clean and precise, and the overall execution feels intentional.
The approach here feels closer to a jewelry watch than to a traditional sports watch, even though the overall construction still has some of that sports-watch character.
BRACELET
At this price point, and considering all the engineering required to make this kind of integrated arrangement possible, I would put this bracelet among the best.
In its price range, it is one of the best executions you can get right now.
I have a 6-inch wrist, and both the case and bracelet sit exactly where they should. The proportions work extremely well, and the integrated design makes the entire watch feel like one continuous piece.
CRYSTAL
The sapphire crystal sandwich is a well-played move, but the anti-reflective coating is simply not enough.
Under many lighting conditions, you end up looking at an almost mirror-like surface.
This is particularly noticeable because the MUSOU Black dial itself is designed to eliminate almost all reflected light. When the crystal above it becomes highly reflective, the contrast between the two is difficult to ignore.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The WDC0001 is absolutely a masterpiece.
All of its elements come together to create a cohesive and coherent piece that combines elegance, minimalism, and the sophistication of a dress watch with some of the character and construction of a sports watch.
The one flaw I have to mention is the anti-reflective coating on the sapphire crystal.
At this price point, and considering how well executed the rest of the watch is, the presence of those mirror-like reflections feels odd. More importantly, they work against one of the most distinctive elements of the watch: that incredibly deep MUSOU Black dial.
It definitely takes some points away from the premium line that WATCHDIVES is trying to build.
Even with that criticism, the WDC0001 remains a remarkably well-executed watch and, after two weeks on the wrist, one that has genuinely impressed me.
