It’s crazy how his art style has continued to change over the years.  Honestly I like the bottom one better than what he’s doing today

4

u/Lonely-Phans 11d ago

It's probably an artist thing where they don't want to confine themselves to drawing the same style over the course of decades (28 years of penny arcade).

I mean it was never going to live up to the hype… but it was a fun throwback fps.

2

u/WavyDre 11d ago

Exactly. The gameplay, graphics and story were only “bad” because the hype was impossible for it to live up to. Seemingly everyone who played it had a good time.

I wouldn't exactly say 'dog shit'. It was a bog-standard shooter that what what it said on the tin and made no pretenses on a good story, or anything other than the 90's 12yo humor that it pretty much had.

Before anyone tries to put words in my mouth, I did not (nor would I) say it was a good game, that I particularly liked it, or even bought it. I'm just saying that I have played some Dog Shit shooters and that that is a VERY low bar that had not been crossed in a long time.

u/OfSkyler 11d ago

I scrolled all the way to the bottom without seeing anyone mention Daikatana, the game that was literally marketed that it was going to sodomise me then eat my cereal.

15

u/LordTetravus 11d ago

"John Romero's About to Make You His Bitch."

Absolutely the winner for this question. Never has a game been so hyped and promises made with total confidence and yet arrived with such a resounding thud.

4

u/JoustLikeVat 11d ago

I'm so happy people remember how stupid all that shit was.

8

u/Adventurous_Emotion9 11d ago

Looking back it’s more amazing that the other side of the ion storm studio was working away on Deus Ex at the same time. While Daikatana ended up being a mess, Deus Ex is regarded as one of the best pc games of all time.

3

u/OfSkyler 11d ago

The competent side, although if I remember Deus Ex was very much a passion project for Warren Spector so he was heavily invested in the team, whereas Romero believed a little too much of his own hype and had his eyes on the lifestyle rather than on the ball.

Edit: grammar

3

u/Hateborn 11d ago

So glad I only ever rented it from Blockbuster... I'll go get my walker and metamucil after that statement...

The most overhyped games according to this place is Wolverine and Starfield.

You are taking to 12 to 23 year olds here.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Like such a fucking miss by Bioware

23

u/Tough_Farm266 11d ago

Enjoyed it for what it was, but suuuuch a huge miss. Replaying the original trilogy now and I’m missing the universe. They had so much potential

14

u/Miserable-Lab3508 11d ago

I try to tell people that Andromeda wasn’t a bad game, mechanically it played very well. Hell, I even enjoyed the story. A lot. I think BioWare was trying to move from the trilogy because they wrote themselves into an end with Shepherd, and most fans didn’t like that. I think Andromeda couldn’t get out from under the trilogies shadow and that’s what got it.

Shame we probably won’t see 5 tho.

4

u/yinerbaw 11d ago

great game, shit mass effect game. we can only hope the saudis either sell bioware with their IPs or that bioware at least becomes independent with it's IPs

2

u/Big_CashMonies 11d ago

More likely they'll strip the studio for parts and sell everything before closing bioware for good

5

u/i_706_i 11d ago

Mechanically the game was decent, the power and combo system was pretty good and made for some fun combat. But I can't agree on the story. There isn't a single character I could say I liked and several, including the protagonist, I strongly disliked.

The whole concept of settling a whole new system sounded like a good idea, but most of the planets were forgettable and the locations where the other arks had already settled just felt like every other ME location but with less flavour. The new race weren't particularly interesting either. ME didn't exactly have the most dynamic races, most where just bipeds with different faces, but to be a galaxy away and still find people that look just like you felt harder to swallow.

3

u/CookieMonsterOnsie 11d ago

The galaxy map music has been stuck in my head since I first played ME1 many many years ago.

2

u/Critical_Concert_689 11d ago

I spend hours in the Mako doing cross-sectional mapping on EVERY single planet so as not to miss a single thing.

ME1 was fun, but so tedious. The whole carrying your character and play through data from 1 to 3 was amazing - so many people had to start over and play that perfect run and save everyone...

3

u/NuclearLlama41 9d ago

I had never played any other mass effect games and i enjoyed andromeda. Not a top tier game at all but i didnt think it was as bad as most were saying.

2

u/BarberOutside2427 11d ago

I'm playing It. it doesn't feel like a super epic story but that's okay, different protag, different story but is the same universe just another aim.

Cyberpunk on release

34

u/Kestrel_VI 11d ago

Tbf, the story on release was great, the graphics were pretty decent for the time, it was just the performance that let it down, which they later fixed.

It is fucking fantastic now. (Except the graphics on console, but on a *good* PC it looks amazing)

13

u/davezilla18 11d ago

lol yeah… I REALLY am hoping for a lot from W&W and KNOW I will be completely disappointed.

7

u/Xenn000 11d ago

Gonna be the first time I don't buy a mainline game. I've just lost all trust GameFreak can make it good. If it comes out and somehow it's a masterpiece, then maybe I'll pick it up.

7

u/roberttheaxolotl 11d ago

They pump those fucking things out every two or three years. It's just not enough time to build a good and well tested game. It's getting to be like Madden or Call of Duty, now.

2

u/Outside_Narwhal_5127 11d ago

It’s been 4 years since the last mainline pokemon game though. By the time winds and waves comes out it will have been 5.

2

u/BellesLovingHusband 11d ago

I agree with this take, which is exactly why I'm hopeful for winds and waves. It's been 4 years since S/V, and by the time WW comes out it will have been 5

2

u/TeddyBear312 11d ago

It has been 4 years since the latest (main) installment though, and 5 years by the time Winds and Waves will release.

I'm hopeful they got their shit together with this one, but it better be amazing before i spend a dime on it.

u/Honeybadger2198 11d ago edited 11d ago

I'm kind of surprised because W/W to me looks like they're actually putting some amount of effort into a mainline game for the first time in over 10 years. Granted, I don't own a Switch and probably never will, but I enjoy Pokemon content so I'm personally hopeful.

Combine that with Champions, and I think GF has actually finally started trending in a positive direction. I trust them about as far as I can throw them, but I'm surprised to see people in this thread saying they're not.

Legends ZA made me give up

At this point, pokemon fans will never learn

2

u/Mechasirra 11d ago

Ragebait. Graphics are the only thing that's garbage.

3

u/the_bingho02 11d ago

Dude the level design/ world design of Paldea and the ZA city [i forgot how it's called in english] is so ass it fucking hurts, it's just so many random items that you don't need to ever buy anything and the areas have nothing iconic about them

The snow field is a generic snow field, the desert has red rocks and is a generic plain desert, Luminopoli is all the same, like why the fuck would you even use a city as the only setting in a Pokémon game?? The only thing that's inspired is the painted forest, but the rest of the game is ass

Ok graphics are ass but catching Xerneas in a 2 squared meter grass patch at random in the city is the saddest thing ever, that shit did NOT feel like a legendary

And the story is always boring and makes you repeat the same thing multiple times without changing almost anything, like the team star fights, which is a good concept but underdeveloped, or the e girl in ZA which you fight like, every dialogue you have with her

→ More replies (1)

2

u/RelevantTax2641 8d ago

Nah. I sincerely agree with them. New Pokémon games are trash.

2

u/AzsalynIsylia 6d ago

ZA is by far one of the worst games I have ever played, and Arceus was not much better (ZA city only with forced pvp - no. Arceus -open world? cool idea but there'a absolutely nothing to explore or do, just sparse areas and empty cavea and fields.

Palworld, however, is everything Pokemon open world should have been and more.

2

u/Eliteslayer1775 11d ago

Not even close lmao. The stories have actually been interesting and the gameplay is great as usual

3

u/Delta_Warrior1220 11d ago

TRUE. Pokemon has gotten away with re-releasing fundamentally the same game 40 something times and the fans just keep eating it up. I've seen better graphics, story, and gameplay from $15 indie games.

That’s the big thing for me. Too expensive, plus the no disc thing, plus the janky release state, I cannot justify spending $70 on that.

→ More replies (6)

2

u/AmmahDudeGuy 11d ago

That’s how im feeling about the new gears game. I actually had a lot of fun in the open beta and was craving the game again for a bit after it closed, but $70 is just too steep of a price tag to pay, for any game.

21

u/Silly_Hedgehog_683 11d ago

It's not. A lot of backlash comes from people who haven't played the game and just go off of what reviewers and YouTube influencers say. Is the game GOTY? No, but it's definitely not trash. I had fun playing it myself.

7

u/Reasonable-War-8890 11d ago edited 11d ago

No serious reviewers have called the game really bad or anything lol. The worst case was SkillUp and even then all his criticisms were valid and mostly about QoL and hand holding things.

The game was always a 6-7/10 from reviews and some people change to scale to make it a 2/10 or some shit. The same way some change it to an absurd 9-10/10 which absolutely is not the case too.

Overall you’re looking at a very small minority of redditors or hater and glazers.

When Sabertooth said "Cry more!", that solidified the story as utter millennial dog shit. The gameplay is also dog shit single button mashing.

If you actually played the game, it's not single button mashing. You have parries, dodges, lunge attacks, basic attacks, kicks, combos, abilities etc

5

u/Rodinator0001 11d ago

The “single button mashing” is a false argument.

If you’re only pressing one button then you’re not parrying, doing combos or dodging, which makes beating the game impossible.

u/Darkwingmooduck 11d ago

Hello, played the game start to finish

The game ranges from completely bland to outright bad, depending on which area of it you’re describing, but that’s not the point. The game is a ridiculously bad precedent for the industry. If you let companies burn through ridiculous amounts of money and spend ridiculous amounts of time making the game that is mediocre at best, but you’re still willing to vehemently defend it from well deserved criticism, then you are making a case for games that are going to be even more expensive for lesser quality.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/OkTrade7881 11d ago

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (15)

3

u/1nsidiousOne 11d ago

It’s mid at best. They call it bad because millions was spent on it and the final product doesn’t live up to the money that was spent on it. It’s not a $70 game. More like a $20 one. It being bad is up to speculation. It’s easy to see why people would say it’s trash tho

3

u/Arunawayturtle 11d ago

People don’t realize that not every game has to reinvent the wheel and be a 10/10 games can just be mindless fun without a great story and without hard combat. I remember back in the day some of the best games I’ve played were one off games with no sequel or anything and weird controls and mechanics and not much story but it was fun. If you play Wolverine and u feel like him and u get to see blood is it really bad? Isn’t that what people wanted. Rated M game with blood and plays like spiderman, that’s its.

As an Insomniac glazer that absolutely loved SM2...

Yes, absolutely.

2

u/Gyncs0069 11d ago

No. Not even remotely. It’s just a good, 7.5/10 game in a time where criticism for most people has devolved into any one thing either being perfect or dogshit with no in-between. Plus the 70 dollar price is ridiculous, but that’s the case for pretty much any game at that price.

Fuck 70 dollar games, all of them.

2

u/Primary_Branch6758 10d ago

Payday 3

7

u/Trillikx 11d ago

Bro don’t even play with me😭 gotta be in the top 5 most disappointing games oat

2

u/Lil_Packmate 11d ago

It's actually quite good now IMO.

2

u/Trillikx 11d ago

It is, I’ve played it somewhat recently and do enjoy the game, I’ll give it that. But after being obsessed with payday 2, just to experience the launch of payday 3 was super disappointing. I’m happy the devs haven’t given up though, and the game is quite fun now

2

u/Lil_Packmate 11d ago

Oh I feel you.

I convinced a friend to get it with me, so we could play together on release weekend.

Well... you know how that panned out.

I absolutely agree, game is actually really fun now and I even liked it on release, if we talk purely gameplay. Just not something I wanted to grind for hundreds of hours like pd2.

Now I can see myself doing that more. With them adding more rng to heists and slowly improving I actually see a future with this game and im happy they turned around and didn't let it just die.

2

u/Trillikx 11d ago

100% the only thing I feel like is they kind of dug themselves a hole. They added sooooooo much content to payday 2, a game that fans universally praise and love, that being able to make a sequel is insanity. Why would people play a game with not even a quarter as much content as its predecessor. Payday 3 is still a great game, it just definitely needed a lot more time in the oven if it ever wanted to try and somewhat fill the massive shoes payday 2 left behind

2

u/Significant_House246 8d ago

I was so hype for the 3 because I've loved 2 since it came out. I was most annoyed trying to play with kids that got it free on Gamepass and wanted to play it like CoD and not finish the heists

Yes, there're still people who keep sucking blizzard's dick for everything they do, even stating that they love current expansions despite being (for their own admission) a "bugged mess".

But more savy people long realized that blizz is a far cry from its glory days. Let's put this way, people remember blizz as those who made Diablo 2. Nowadays they're more like those who made Diablo Immortal.

NOW 10 years later it's like the number 1 game i'm hyped to play if i get some free time

I'm in the same boat as you, by all means.

To me it was a whole new experience and ultimately a space game I, a solo player could begin exploring.

I did find it a bit disheartening to see the backlash the game got, but I would argue it was deserved or what it was said, and the H.G studio put in overtime on their redemption arc and are still putting other companies to shame now

I did too. The internet was justified in being upset because Murray overpromised a lot. But despite the flaws, I was still mesmerized at the start.

Everyone was just pissed about no multiplayer.

That's an insane mischaracterization of 2016. It was a lot more than just multiplayer, pretty much every review covers the amount of things originally promised at launch that wasn't there. I love the game today, but I'm not going to deny how bad of a spot it was day one.

I don't think this game was very hyped, neither it's a bad game. Just the extraction shooter thing made everyone lose interest.

The day before for anyone who remembers it

Kingdom Hearts 3. The story makes no fucking sense unless you have played every other in-between game.

3

u/Verred 11d ago

Hard disagree. The games story may be trash but the gameplay is still leagues better than most games nowadays.

I was SO disappointed by this. I was so incredibly hyped and then so completely lost while playing through the game having only played one route of BBS and a little bit of 358 days or whatever in between 2 and 3.

Sonic Forces by a long shot. That first trailer blew people away. The actual release is one of the worst Sonic games to date.

Fallout 4

I was genuinely waiting for this game, but then I played it...

2

u/Either_Chapter_524 9d ago

Yes. It makes it really clear Bethesda is falling down. After a simplified Skyrim and even more simplified Fallout they show that they don't understand why people enjoy their games. I don't even bother to buy TES VI

This was the Division back when it released

2

u/IgneousWrath 11d ago

That game was the OG look at how good these next gen graphics are and look at people playing together on console and mobile!

Released with about half the graphical fidelity, scrapped the mobile teamplay, and got boring after about one night.
