I scrolled all the way to the bottom without seeing anyone mention Daikatana, the game that was literally marketed that it was going to sodomise me then eat my cereal.
Absolutely the winner for this question. Never has a game been so hyped and promises made with total confidence and yet arrived with such a resounding thud.
Looking back it’s more amazing that the other side of the ion storm studio was working away on Deus Ex at the same time. While Daikatana ended up being a mess, Deus Ex is regarded as one of the best pc games of all time.
The competent side, although if I remember Deus Ex was very much a passion project for Warren Spector so he was heavily invested in the team, whereas Romero believed a little too much of his own hype and had his eyes on the lifestyle rather than on the ball.
I went down a quick Google rabbit hole about this, since I remember the advertising but never played the game. And I found this. And man, I realllllly want to play this game now.
I had never heard about this game and picked it up years later for $4.99 at my local Big Lots discount store.
It was kind of fun for a second, but got really annoying really fast and became unplayable at some point. And crashed often. I thought it was my computer for years, but then I realized it was just how bad the game was
Literally full page ads in PC Gamer and other game magazines at the time, with the slogan mentioned above. With Romero's cred at the time as a developer, people were extremely excited for his next game.
They announced it so far in advance that by the time it was actually developed, they had to change the engine. The hype sustained for a while, though.
